One of the best sequels of all times hands down. Had a lot if fun with it. It has great comedic talent with jonah hill's awkwardness with Tatum's Gung ho personality- with a cool twist with the existing setting

"22 Jump Street" defied my expectations and actually made me laugh at a lot of places. The chemistry between Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum works as well as with the first film, and Ice Cube, though not having a lot of screen time, made me laugh so hard whenever he was on ("What a black man gotta do to get some water 'round here?"). The escalation at the end is also funny as hell, and the conclusion is just what the viewer needs. This one'll make you giggle right until the last second. Expand

In the grand tradition of comedy follow-ups like Gremlins 2: The New Batch and Airplane II: The Sequel ("Ted, I have the strangest feeling we've been through this exact same thing before"), 22 Jump Street has a giddy time going full meta. TheIn the grand tradition of comedy follow-ups like Gremlins 2: The New Batch and Airplane II: The Sequel ("Ted, I have the strangest feeling we've been through this exact same thing before"), 22 Jump Street has a giddy time going full meta. The new headquarters of useless policemen Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill) is, as befits a pumped-up, budget-enhanced sequel, far swankier than their original digs, complete with a slick office for Ice Cube's character that resembles an actual ice cube. Meanwhile, an early action sequence suggesting that the franchise is about to blast off in a new direction is quickly put paid to by the heroes' pencil-pushing superior (Nick Offerman). "This department has invested a lot of money to make sure Jump Street keeps going," he chides, shooting down Tatum's suggestion that the duo join the (boom) Secret Service. Instead, they're going back to school — specifically, college — in a case that mirrors, beat-for-beat, the original movie.

Playing it safe has scuppered many a sequel in the past. But Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the sharp brains behind The Lego Movie, know what they're doing. They stick to formula so forcefully, and with such inventive flourishes, that the joke gets funnier and funnier with repetition. Best of all are the clips that unspool over the end credits, lampooning the current trend for stings by teasing not just the next Jump Street but the next couple of dozen, plus ancillary media. (For the record: we really want to see the cartoon that teams Jenko and Schmidt with an octopus.)

There's little character development: one of our heroes (Tatum) is still a lunk who confuses "carte blanche" for "Cate Blanchett", the other (Hill) still a neurotic softie who's equally useless at improvising his way through a drug-cartel meet or a slam-poetry contest. The plot, which revolves around a jockish quarterback played by Wyatt Russell (Kurt's son) and his possibly nefarious bro-gang, is nothing much to speak of. But the stars remain an inspired, even loveable, double-act: a couple of party-hearty Drebins, or Bill and Ted with handguns. The new spin here is that the buddy cops' passion for each other is starting to wane — they want to investigate other people. Hot Fuzz got there first, but the homoeroticism here is hotter and fuzzier. 22 Jump Street cranks it up to hysterical levels, not least with some wonderful use of split-screen.

As with the original movie, there are a fair few flabby stretches and some single-joke characters (one baddie complains that crime was better in the '90s at least 54 times). It's hard to begrudge it a little slackness here and there, though, given the frenetic blizzard of jokes elsewhere. If Lord and Miller have been subjected to notes from "the department", it doesn't show: there's an exuberance and silliness here that doesn't diminish for the whole two hours. Rare is the film that understands the pleasures of letting an enraged Ice Cube take out his wrath on an all-you-can-eat buffet. And which other blockbuster in 2014 would interrupt its climactic car chase to lob in a gag about Benny Hill?

Lord and Miller go Bad Boys 2, adding Peter Stormare, back-to-back gun-pointing and mucho excess. The action's bigger, Ice Cube’s angrier. Another silly treat.

Irony of ironies is that almost everything I would like to say was already said in one of the opening scenes. The first movie was surprisingly good, so the second movie does more of the same, just raising the ante a little.

However this movie's main saving grace was its self aware humor that poked fun at the whole sequel idea. Fourth wall joke that don't actually break the fourth wall. Allot of the other jokes are either copied and pasted from the first movie or awkward sexuality jokes that are clearly trying too hard to be more clever than they really are.

Hill and Tatum are just magic together. I really hope to see them together again more often in future movies.

Overall:
22 Jump Street is still a pretty funny movie, and fun to watch. However, just because it can make fun of itself for being an uninspired sequel, doesn't make it okay to be one. A shame as it looks like the movies biggest joke kinda backfired.

Side Note:
BEST ENDING CREDITS EVER!!!!!!!

Ugh. Probably the most disappointing movie of 2014. I thoroughly enjoyed the first movie. All of my friends said this was great or even better than the first. I was pumped. And I was let down.

The movie isn't good because the chemistry of the Hill and Tatum seemed to worse from movie to movie. In this movie, they seem awkward and with the script that they were given, I could see why. Barring a few chuckles here and there, the movie is not that funny. The story is a rehash of the original and they were trying to go for the meta "do better than the first time" type jokes and they weren't done very well. I say watch the first one instead and forget this even existed.

Why does that not matter all that much? Because in this laugh-filled comedy, they actually mock that fact multiple times where they tear down the 4th wall and don't even care. Sure, I felt that they overdid it a bit with this, as well as the exaggerated homosexual innuendos, but the good still far outweighed the bad. Like the last film, the sequences were outrageous but funny and the acting was just dude-bro enough to be spot on for what they were going for. Expanding Ice Cube's role was also a smart idea, as was the casting of the stunning Amber Stevens. It astounds me that she hasn't had more success in her acting career. It does have one or two scenes that I can say I actually laughed at, but the rest of the movie is the characters actually telling the audience (yes, breaking the wall several times) that what they are watching is nothing new and really the same thing, if not less, as the first. There is even a segment where they poke fun at the budget of the actual movie and how they went over it so the special effects and everything had to be kept to a minimum. Expand

Certain gags try too hard and yes the plot is basically the same (the latter isn't really a bad thing). You can tell the film is happily aware of this and embraces it fully. Some of the best, understated jokes come from this knowledge. This meta-comedy does keep things afloat, but it doesn't turn into a laugh riot until the movie starts doing its own thing.

The closer it gets to the end the more frequent the laughs become. The spring break scenario is hilarious. Everything else before that is funny, but not as funny as the first movie. At least not until Ice Cube appears on-screen. His character has a larger role and the scenes with him had me rolling on the floor thanks to a surprising and well-done subplot.

While it doesn't hit all the same high-notes as the first I would be lying if I said I didn't laugh throughout. It's still a very funny movie. One that uses inside jokes about sequels in a way rarely seen. An excellent example of meta-comedy done right, and a solid sequel for fans of the first. My total score for the movie is a 7.4/10.

much crappier version of the first one. needed to be edited down. many jokes repeated way too often. Really a shame, they got great chemistry. not really sure how this one is rated higher on MC than the first.

It was unusual that 22 Jump Street was better than it's predecessor. A sequel is usually NEVER better than it's predecessor, yet this was story wise, and comedy wise.

"22 Jump Street" 10 Scale Rating: 8.0 (Great) ...

The Good: Hilarious. Absolutely hilarious. I typically judge a comedy based on how often I laugh out loud, snicker, or even smile. This film caused me to laugh out loud throughout. Tatum and Hill make for an amazing comedic tandem. Their timing is fantastic and the dialogue is well done and witty. Despite having a story that is nearly identical to the previous film, it works. They made the film different enough to still be a great film. It is rare that I say this, but this sequel is every bit as good as the first film.

The Bad: While it works, it is still the same film over again and that does take away a LITTLE. Should there be a third offering, they are going to need to think of something else. Since it is a continuation of the first, and pretty much the same thing, you won't like the sequel if you didn't enjoy the previous film. A few jokes later in the film got old and ran a little long, especially an odd fist fight between Hill and a female character.

But it does better then that, I found myself laughing out loud consistently. The movie is every self aware, they never break the forth wall but if you listen to the dialog you can tell when they are poking fun at the movie it self. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum do a great job together again, seeing the improv lines they do adds a nice touch.22 Jump Street is also directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the guys who made The Lego Movie/21 Jump Street. The story doesn't have much to it, but it's not the reason you are watching the film. It's nice to see that they know the movie they are making is ridiculous and they take every chance they get to take a jab at the movie.
If you liked 21 Jump Street or looking for a lighthearted raunchy comedy look no further.

Oh wow. I expect a funny movie sequel but damn, I didn’t expect a very funny sequel with a lot of heart in it.

The phrase "The sequel is better than the original" is rare in comedy movies and 22 Jump Street is one of the few movies where the sequel is better than the original (21 Jump Street).

What I really loved about this movie is the perfect balance between the serious tone and the funny tone of this movie. It had a lot of heart in it as a result and I would credit Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's direction for it.

Speaking of direction, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller did an awesome job directing the movie, as usual with their other movies they directed. I still think The LEGO Movie is still their best directing effort but their directing is one of the reasons why this movie is so enjoyable to watch in technical aspects of the movie.

Another reason why I loved this movie was surprisingly great character development. This made me really care and love the main duo characters Schmidt and Jenko. Schmidt’s character development hit me home really hard. The cast performances from Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum is really great and their bromance chemistry felt so realistic and easy to root for.

Of course, the humor is really good and it does not involve shooting of penises this time so I guess it’s better because it does not involve shock humor. Rather, it uses meta humor to make this movie’s humor funnier without losing its brash yet goofy and funny humor altogether.

The plot was an attribute why this sequel is better than the original. Though, one problem with the plot is that it felt predictable at times and I think this is why this movie is not entirely perfect.

Overall, this movie is very funny to watch. It’s better than the sequel for sure. I would love to watch the movie again especially with my friends around to enhance the experience of rewatching this movie. Even watching this movie again alone is a rewarding experience with great direction, great character development, re-watchable plot, funny meta, brash and goofy humor and of course, the great bromance chemistry between the movie’s leads.

P.S: This movie pulled a Marvel in a very meta, funny way so stay after the movie ends. And oh, not to spoil too much, cameos galore!

But,I got tricked: I watched the trailer for it a long time ago, and for some reason I got 22 Jump Street confused with something else, obviously, and I remembered it was supposed to be good. So I started watching it without preoccupations. But, after about twenty seconds, I realised it wasn't what I thought it would be.

This film is just the sum of everything I hate and the only thing it lacked for it to be a 0 was sci-fi thrown in.
I will not comment on the performances of these two actors, who actually seemed to have taken a good turn (Tatum in Side Effects and Hill in The Wolf of Wall Street), but then retreated to their usual roles.
One thing I will say, though, about the comedy. Now, I don't understand how this kind of moronic and brainless gags can actually make somebody laugh. A movie for your eyes only. Keep your brain at home, you won't need it at all - and be sure you have enough pop corn to pass the time while you're forced to hear decades-old lines.

And the critics? Any critic who voted this more than 50 is a sell-out, obviously. I wonder how much of the budget was dedicated to that.

A lot of the humor works and a fair amount of the film feels fresh. With all that said the film isn’t a masterpiece either. The humor feels a bit more eager/desperate to please this time around, the film is more frantic with pacing, and despite all its jokes about unoriginal sequels this film does have a fair amount of rehashing. But the main reason why this film isn’t as good as the first one is it lacks the heart the first one did. All heartfelt moments feel forced and generic and the chemistry between Hill and Tatum isn’t quite as strong as it was in the first film being more mean-spirited this time involving a somewhat generic argument cliché. Despite all those issues though I enjoyed the film. The saving grace of this film is that most of the jokes work really well preventing it from being a letdown and somewhat disguising the fact that this is a cashgrab. Its miles ahead of the Hangover sequels and is not the disappointment I thought it would be. If you are a fan of the first one definitely check it out as you’ll probably enjoy it just don’t expect a great sequel. If you didn’t like the first one this one won’t do anything to change your mind. For a film that didn’t needed to exist, and was probably ordered by Hollywood, Chris Miller and Phil Lord stepped up to the plate to deliver a film that may not blow you away or have the same lasting appeal as the first one but is still enjoyable and provides a lot of laughs. To the guys who made the Hangover sequels, take notes this is how you do a good comedy sequel. Expand

I had to deduct a point because the story is the same like 21 jump street. It have not so many surprises during the movie because the story is so similar to the first film. The closing credit of the film is awesome and maybe a allusion of coming sequels.
Jonah hill and Channing Tatum make a great performance, the roles are perfect for them and they have the best bromance. The part of Ice cube is probably even funnier than in 21 Jump street, he plays the choleric boss perfectly. The whole cast is very well chosen and harmonious.

A buff macho, and dull headedness, mixed with a brainy, textual and lame counterpart. Who would think this pairing could, and most importantly, should work. Their names; Chris Lord and Phil Lord, the creative duo behind the fresh and lively revival of the series that made Johnny Depp famous.
In contrast of course I'm speaking in regards to the highly successful 2012 sleeper hit "21 Jump Street". A buddy cop action comedy, that knew no boundaries and greatly stumbled where others have gone before, and all the same felt original, unique and it was very, very funny. I can't say the same for it's uptight, overly obsessive sequel. Amply titled "22 Jump Street". (In case you're wondering, they moved across the street).

Sure we have the original team on board for more mischief and mayhem. Doing almost word for word the exact same thing. "Do what you did the first time...and everyone's happy". I can say, to an extent that this approach works, and for many moviegoers they will appreciate it. I just missed the improvisation and flamboyance that made it's predecessor memorable. Surprises at every corner. Granted, "22 Jump Street" has enough surprises, comedic wit, and action to make it mildly enjoyable for the audience it's strictly geared towards. Fans looking for a decent follow-up, should look no further. Because, there is a lot of the same, and nothing else.

Schmidt and Jenko are back. Promising on the goodwill from the last one "you two .. are going to college" and finally we are made good on this promise. There is, of course, a new synthetic drug at MC State where the two must, evade into the personal lives of their fellow classmates, and neighbors, or "Infiltrate the dealer...find the supplier". To describe it blunty.

Arguably, the best notion about the screenplay, penned by Josh Mccall and Jonah Hill was it's ability to take Schmidt and Jenko's relationship farther than before. It's probably best to pick up a copy of "21 Jump St" before seeing it's sequel, as there are many references that you may have forgotten. Rest assured for fans not familiar with the first one, the film opens with a funny recap of the events that took place on "21 Jump Street". While some things never change, the fauq identities "Doug" and "Brad" McQuaid are still in tact. Channing Tatum's Brad gets to experience the popular side of things now, while Jonah Hill's Doug sits on the sidelines, literally. The two sort of branch out, and do their thing. "Brad" gets to live his dreams of playing Football, and maybe one day drive that lamborghini. In addition "Doug" is playing the opposite of his post "high school days" there is no charismatic Dave Franco to lean on this time.

The action set pieces are actually quite impressive. I was in tuned more with the plot this time around then I was previously, which is a good thing. I guess. Did I really wanna be motivated by an intricate of plot points? not entirely. Will I take em? sure, why not. Never is it more diverse than it needs to be. The jokes kind of up the ante a little bit. There are two or three laugh out loud jokes, instead of having the same consistency and flow the original had. Believe me. when "22 Jump Street" is funny, it's pretty comical all the same.

In addition, the softness that Tatum brings to Jenko is like a teddy bear. You can't be mad or angry ever, because he is just sensitive. There is a good bit about how, Jenko takes a Sexuality class.. and all of sudden becomes an advocate for gay rights. "I said a lot of gay slurs in high school" he refers to his partner, to which Hill responds amicably "yeah most of them directed at me". These are the scenes that propel the film. That goodwill unfortunately lags after about the first hour. If you can believe it, the best jokes in the film actually belong to Ice Cube, who returns as the loud mouth, and stereotypical police chief. The best joke lies between him and Jonah Hill's character, I won't spoil it for you, however, it's a great joke worth the price of admission alone.

In the end, of course the budget is obviously bigger, and, as with most, sequels usually tend to overdo it a tad. Phil Lord and Chris Miller take the time with certain advancements, but are given a slew of extras that, was underutilized. Rarely is a sequel good, and it's even more rare to be better than it's predecessor. I can say that "22 Jump Street" tries it's best, and never succeeds. Jonah Hill and Tatum are great together. The two have remarkable on screen chemistry. When you have a film as golden as "21 Jump Street" it's always going to be tough to top it. While my sheer opinion won't sway anyone from seeing this film. Sadly, "22 Jump Street" is another sequel in a long line, that has failed to live up to it's already high standards set before it.

The sex scene has the girl in her panties. Supposedly the main character was having sex "all night with her" and at the end no sweat or panties off. Ahmmm.

If you are 19 years old, drunk, and have an IQ of Radio, then you will like it, though my girlfriend liked it and she is a genius. That puzzles me. I recommend being high or drunk to watch this, then its funny.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. How many sequels have been accused of basically repackaging the last film we saw and charging us the price of a cinema ticket once again? That’s Hollywood, but at least Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, the directorial duo behind the first 21 Jump Street and the seminal The Lego Movie (which also came out this year – these guys have been busy), are acutely aware of this and unafraid of letting us know that they know.

The first 21 Jump Street (2012) took its name from the address of the old church in which the operation was headquartered. Right off the mark, the Ocean’s Eleven-style sequel numbering lands us across the street at number 22 which, mocking the often inflated budget of Hollywood sequels, is an even bigger church, kitted out with a king’s ransom in expensive looking surveillance equipment, and a chief’s office that looks like a ‘giant cube of ice’ – cue the derisive Captain Dickson (Ice Cube).

Our ‘heroes’ Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are cops and buddies, as close as two straight guys can be, and their bromance is truly something to behold. Their relationship was solidified on screen in the first film and provides the central conflict of the sequel – all other characters in the film are sent to test it.

The whole thing’s pretty consistently hilarious. Hill and Tatum are fine comedic actors who carry the film well. It’s not perfect, but there are some great gags peppered throughout (from Jonah Hill’s impersonation of a Latino gangster to Ice Cube losing his cool at a buffet), and a slew of more subtle shout-outs for the perceptive filmgoer.

A lot of the humour is drawn from the general self-aware ribbing, and even when it’s not directly commenting on the budget or the sequelitis, it’s ripping apart the clichés of college movies, action movies, and buddy cop movies.

Much is made of the fact that the characters are going to have to do the same thing once again: infiltrate an educational establishment to root out drug dealers. They’re looking a little old for high school now, so they’re off to college in all its clichéd frat partying, football playing, hard drinking, spring breaking glory.

Their emotional strife pans out similarly to last time, but with some role reversal. Jenko’s natural jock status was subverted in 21 Jump Street, when he found that the modern high school student is more receptive to the book smart sensitivity embodied by Schmidt. Here it’s played straight, as he effortlessly slides into the frat boy dynamic and finds a new best bro, leaving Schmidt by the wayside.

The plot might be formulaic, but this film revels in it. It’s a very easy film to watch and plays like a farcical lesson in making a comedy sequel. As the main goal of a comedy is to make you laugh; to this end, it delivers.

I was expecting good. I wasn't expecting this good! I can't believe I'm saying it but I actually liked it better than the first, and that's definitely saying something.

The meta-humor was over the top good! While not as subtle as Arrested Development in that department, it didn't try to be and actually went for the more blatant aspects of it. Case in point, the end-credits which were hysterical. Think Tropic Thunder but reversed.

All in all a great movie clearly showing that these two make one killer comedy duo. You won't be disappointed!

Short on laughs, but smartly written and effectively explores its protagonists undeniable chemistry, 22 Jump Street is a slight improvement on its slightly amusing predecessor.

I've noticed that most people that enjoyed the film were usually 12-17 year old's. It's a movie based towards people that don't know what real comedy is.

Funny, satirical, and tongue-in-cheek, 22 Jump Street not only delivers consistent laughs, but hilariously parodies its genre with great performances and interesting action sequences, with the funniest credits I've ever seen.

The movie was really awesome. I actually am suggesting to see it. Though, from the middle part made me not laugh there. The beginning and end part made me laugh to the floor.

I have to admit that I did not see the first one. Maybe I will, because I enjoyed the second one. The amount of humor is very impressive. Some jokes are smart-funny and some not-so-smart but still funny. Some episodes though deserve to be thrown out, they are that bad. So, I was not very happy with the script. The ending was a fountain of humor. It reminded me of "Superbad" with an enormous number of hilarious images after the movie has ended. So, do not be in a hurry to leave when it's over.

Mainly due to the jokes in it being fairly original and having the movie make fun of the fact that it was the same movie is always lots of fun. There were points of the movie where i was actually laughing really hard, and that's all i really ask from a comedy. The only downside i would say from this movie is that it's alot of college humor, which might disclude some of the audience depending on their view towards college. Expand

However, the plot resembles the plot of 21 Jump Street. In both cases, the two undercover cops (Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill) take down a drug lord.
Overall, I'd give it a 9.

It still has the great duo of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum and their ''bromance''. The plot is virtually identical though as that is one of the main gags. The producers didn't know why the first one was so successful so that is why the sequel is the same. They even have a previously on Jump Street at the beginning which I thought was very clever and a good way for people who haven't seen the first one to get up to speed quickly. The fact that it isn't very different doesn't mean it's bad but they could have added new aspects to the story. Regardless, the performances are all flawless and all the gags work effortlessly and the result is action comedy that is well worth your time. Even though it is a dreaded SEQUEL..

In fact, in terms of plot, there is hardly a difference between the two. The plot is simple–the two hilarious undercover cops head back to collage to find and stop a drug ring that has surfaced at the school. One thing that really stood out to me was how self-aware this film was, almost so much so, it becomes annoying. For example, it constantly referenced how sequels never live up to the first one, and how the plot between the two was the same. Something that bothers me in the genre of comedy lately, is the stress factored into a film that is supposed to be relaxing to viewers and hold some good laughs. 22 Jump Street handled this really well, as it had some very funny scenes while some were exaggerated, over-the-top. The movie seemed to reuse jokes and cliché ideas that were not very entertaining. Don’t get me wrong, 22 Jump Street is still hilarious, but expect the same kind of comedy as in the original. The chemistry between the two leads is great and carries the whole movie pretty well. I felt like the run time was a bit long and could have been condensed to make a better movie. The pacing was a little off, almost awkward at times, where dead-time could have been filled with more laughs or simply left on the cutting room floor; this detracted from the overall film. Unrealistic scenarious seemed to overwhelm the comedic aspect quite a bit. I have to say, I laughed my butt off.  Even though it wasn't the most creative comedy, it was simple, didn't require much thinking and let me just sit back and laugh. If you do see this movie stay for the end credits because they’re a knee-slapper. Expand

The only way I can judge a comedy is by how hard it makes me laugh. And this film made me laugh hard. And Wyatt Russell was the biggest surprise. Kurt Russell's kid is hilarious.
