I'm going to probably have to see it again. I didn't really find it that funny and was pretty bored throughout, but I was in a bad mood going in and I think that contributed to it. Update after second viewing coming soon.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. How many sequels have been accused of basically repackaging the last film we saw and charging us the price of a cinema ticket once again? That’s Hollywood, but at least Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, the directorial duo behind the first 21 Jump Street and the seminal The Lego Movie (which also came out this year – these guys have been busy), are acutely aware of this and unafraid of letting us know that they know.

The first 21 Jump Street (2012) took its name from the address of the old church in which the operation was headquartered. Right off the mark, the Ocean’s Eleven-style sequel numbering lands us across the street at number 22 which, mocking the often inflated budget of Hollywood sequels, is an even bigger church, kitted out with a king’s ransom in expensive looking surveillance equipment, and a chief’s office that looks like a ‘giant cube of ice’ – cue the derisive Captain Dickson (Ice Cube).

Our ‘heroes’ Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are cops and buddies, as close as two straight guys can be, and their bromance is truly something to behold. Their relationship was solidified on screen in the first film and provides the central conflict of the sequel – all other characters in the film are sent to test it.

The whole thing’s pretty consistently hilarious. Hill and Tatum are fine comedic actors who carry the film well. It’s not perfect, but there are some great gags peppered throughout (from Jonah Hill’s impersonation of a Latino gangster to Ice Cube losing his cool at a buffet), and a slew of more subtle shout-outs for the perceptive filmgoer.

A lot of the humour is drawn from the general self-aware ribbing, and even when it’s not directly commenting on the budget or the sequelitis, it’s ripping apart the clichés of college movies, action movies, and buddy cop movies.

Much is made of the fact that the characters are going to have to do the same thing once again: infiltrate an educational establishment to root out drug dealers. They’re looking a little old for high school now, so they’re off to college in all its clichéd frat partying, football playing, hard drinking, spring breaking glory.

Their emotional strife pans out similarly to last time, but with some role reversal. Jenko’s natural jock status was subverted in 21 Jump Street, when he found that the modern high school student is more receptive to the book smart sensitivity embodied by Schmidt. Here it’s played straight, as he effortlessly slides into the frat boy dynamic and finds a new best bro, leaving Schmidt by the wayside.

The plot might be formulaic, but this film revels in it. It’s a very easy film to watch and plays like a farcical lesson in making a comedy sequel. As the main goal of a comedy is to make you laugh; to this end, it delivers.

Short on laughs, but smartly written and effectively explores its protagonists undeniable chemistry, 22 Jump Street is a slight improvement on its slightly amusing predecessor.

Review:
Pro:There were some really silly and funny bits. The film had also satirised several themes from other films. The end credits were funny up til the point where they start to repeat itself.
Cons: It was very much, style over substance. Tatum has one facial expression and cannot act. The satirising of other films would have been great, if the timing was better and Tatum acting better. The last act has major loopholes where all the major characters converged in the same building when they were at different locations just a while ago and did not seemed to be heading towards this building. The editing and continuity of the film are problematic.
3/5 - Good enough to watch it for free on TV only.

An inferior product compared to that of the original. Comes across as a rushed effort to cash in on the success of the the first. A shame.

A buff macho, and dull headedness, mixed with a brainy, textual and lame counterpart. Who would think this pairing could, and most importantly, should work. Their names; Chris Lord and Phil Lord, the creative duo behind the fresh and lively revival of the series that made Johnny Depp famous.
In contrast of course I'm speaking in regards to the highly successful 2012 sleeper hit "21 Jump Street". A buddy cop action comedy, that knew no boundaries and greatly stumbled where others have gone before, and all the same felt original, unique and it was very, very funny. I can't say the same for it's uptight, overly obsessive sequel. Amply titled "22 Jump Street". (In case you're wondering, they moved across the street).

Sure we have the original team on board for more mischief and mayhem. Doing almost word for word the exact same thing. "Do what you did the first time...and everyone's happy". I can say, to an extent that this approach works, and for many moviegoers they will appreciate it. I just missed the improvisation and flamboyance that made it's predecessor memorable. Surprises at every corner. Granted, "22 Jump Street" has enough surprises, comedic wit, and action to make it mildly enjoyable for the audience it's strictly geared towards. Fans looking for a decent follow-up, should look no further. Because, there is a lot of the same, and nothing else.

Schmidt and Jenko are back. Promising on the goodwill from the last one "you two .. are going to college" and finally we are made good on this promise. There is, of course, a new synthetic drug at MC State where the two must, evade into the personal lives of their fellow classmates, and neighbors, or "Infiltrate the dealer...find the supplier". To describe it blunty.

Arguably, the best notion about the screenplay, penned by Josh Mccall and Jonah Hill was it's ability to take Schmidt and Jenko's relationship farther than before. It's probably best to pick up a copy of "21 Jump St" before seeing it's sequel, as there are many references that you may have forgotten. Rest assured for fans not familiar with the first one, the film opens with a funny recap of the events that took place on "21 Jump Street". While some things never change, the fauq identities "Doug" and "Brad" McQuaid are still in tact. Channing Tatum's Brad gets to experience the popular side of things now, while Jonah Hill's Doug sits on the sidelines, literally. The two sort of branch out, and do their thing. "Brad" gets to live his dreams of playing Football, and maybe one day drive that lamborghini. In addition "Doug" is playing the opposite of his post "high school days" there is no charismatic Dave Franco to lean on this time.

The action set pieces are actually quite impressive. I was in tuned more with the plot this time around then I was previously, which is a good thing. I guess. Did I really wanna be motivated by an intricate of plot points? not entirely. Will I take em? sure, why not. Never is it more diverse than it needs to be. The jokes kind of up the ante a little bit. There are two or three laugh out loud jokes, instead of having the same consistency and flow the original had. Believe me. when "22 Jump Street" is funny, it's pretty comical all the same.

In addition, the softness that Tatum brings to Jenko is like a teddy bear. You can't be mad or angry ever, because he is just sensitive. There is a good bit about how, Jenko takes a Sexuality class.. and all of sudden becomes an advocate for gay rights. "I said a lot of gay slurs in high school" he refers to his partner, to which Hill responds amicably "yeah most of them directed at me". These are the scenes that propel the film. That goodwill unfortunately lags after about the first hour. If you can believe it, the best jokes in the film actually belong to Ice Cube, who returns as the loud mouth, and stereotypical police chief. The best joke lies between him and Jonah Hill's character, I won't spoil it for you, however, it's a great joke worth the price of admission alone.

In the end, of course the budget is obviously bigger, and, as with most, sequels usually tend to overdo it a tad. Phil Lord and Chris Miller take the time with certain advancements, but are given a slew of extras that, was underutilized. Rarely is a sequel good, and it's even more rare to be better than it's predecessor. I can say that "22 Jump Street" tries it's best, and never succeeds. Jonah Hill and Tatum are great together. The two have remarkable on screen chemistry. When you have a film as golden as "21 Jump Street" it's always going to be tough to top it. While my sheer opinion won't sway anyone from seeing this film. Sadly, "22 Jump Street" is another sequel in a long line, that has failed to live up to it's already high standards set before it.

C+

It reminds me of this is the end. I'm giving it the same score for a reason. The jokes are funny at parts but other gags are just god awful. This movie spent too much time trying to make fun of itself that it ended up really not being funny. It does have one or two scenes that I can say I actually laughed at, but the rest of the movie is the characters actually telling the audience (yes, breaking the wall several times) that what they are watching is nothing new and really the same thing, if not less, as the first. There is even a segment where they poke fun at the budget of the actual movie and how they went over it so the special effects and everything had to be kept to a minimum. This film tried way to hard to be a satire comedy of itself and it failed. I admit that I loved '21 Jump Street' but this sequel comes nowhere close to it. Expand

The movie isn't good because the chemistry of the Hill and Tatum seemed to worse from movie to movie. In this movie, they seem awkward and with the script that they were given, I could see why. Barring a few chuckles here and there, the movie is not that funny. The story is a rehash of the original and they were trying to go for the meta "do better than the first time" type jokes and they weren't done very well. I say watch the first one instead and forget this even existed.

But,I got tricked: I watched the trailer for it a long time ago, and for some reason I got 22 Jump Street confused with something else, obviously, and I remembered it was supposed to be good. So I started watching it without preoccupations. But, after about twenty seconds, I realised it wasn't what I thought it would be.

This film is just the sum of everything I hate and the only thing it lacked for it to be a 0 was sci-fi thrown in.
I will not comment on the performances of these two actors, who actually seemed to have taken a good turn (Tatum in Side Effects and Hill in The Wolf of Wall Street), but then retreated to their usual roles.
One thing I will say, though, about the comedy. Now, I don't understand how this kind of moronic and brainless gags can actually make somebody laugh. A movie for your eyes only. Keep your brain at home, you won't need it at all - and be sure you have enough pop corn to pass the time while you're forced to hear decades-old lines.

And the critics? Any critic who voted this more than 50 is a sell-out, obviously. I wonder how much of the budget was dedicated to that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

The sex scene has the girl in her panties. Supposedly the main character was having sex "all night with her" and at the end no sweat or panties off. Ahmmm.

If you are 19 years old, drunk, and have an IQ of Radio, then you will like it, though my girlfriend liked it and she is a genius. That puzzles me. I recommend being high or drunk to watch this, then its funny.
