In what I think was the 4th Stephan King movie released this year, I enjoyed 1922 by the end of it all. Its a period piece, amplified by fantastic props and chilling vibes. Thomas Jane stars in one of the best roles I've seen him in years

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm amazed that people liked this film so much. I found myself laughing when presumably a should have been frightened. The recurring image of the murder victim looked like something from a 1970s B-movie. Thomas Jane as the father with an over the top Southern drawl was chewing the scenery something awful. Molly Parker as the mother was decent. But the rats! Those rats could really act... their innocent little whiskers belied the menace lurking beneath. Expand

This move was well-made, well-acted and overall well done. For me, it's difficult to enjoy movies where things just get worse and worse for the protagonist. It works for short stories but for a full-length movie it gets tiresome.

SomethingIT, Gerald's Game, and now 1922, This year has given us three great Stephen King film adaptations that have succeeded because the people behind them realized it's the story and characters that are important, not just the concept. Something that has always been the case when the author's works have made the jump to movie format. As far as that goes, 1922 might just be the best of the three. It's incredibly compelling, dark, and intelligent. A horror movie for the thinking man. The story has a great way of getting under your skin. It's pretty slow-burn. We witness a man murder his wife and suffer the consequences of his sin. The movie takes the time to let us see how everything comes together, so that way it means more when everything falls apart. 1922 is subtly unnerving in it's quietness. The way it lets the tension build makes the more visceral thrills and gore all the more effective. There's an emotional gut punch brought on by just how well-acted and believable our leads are. Thomas Jane gives what is undoubtedly the best performance of his career in his third Stephen King adaptation, this one being the best of the bunch and easily his best movie thus far. This could very well open a door for him into more critically successful work in the future as he has really shown more talent here than one would likely expect looking back at his prior works.

1922 is a dark, gothic tale of deserved punishment. One where the characters are so human, and the situation so real, that one can't help but be sucked in by the power of it. The way the supernatural elements are handled make you wonder whether or not Jane is actually being haunted, or if the guilt and stress of what he's done is just driving him mad. The whole thing us very reminiscent of Poe's "The Tell-tale Heart" and other works of gothic fiction. There's both a brain and a beating heart behind the events you'll witness here, and witness them you should. 1922 is an incredible treat for horror fans because it's such a thoughtful work that takes the time to do things right. Every element is in place and masterfully crafted. Director Zak Hilditch should be applauded. He's created an incredible film and hands down one of the best adaptations of a Stephen King story. It's gripping all the way through.

A pretty good thriller and this is one of the most interesting and original Netflix productions. Huge applause for the main male role - it is a really well made character with depth.

Its kinda in the verge of those two genres, I absolutely love how it handles supernatural events, they are perfectly fed, not made pointless by overuse, which is sadly very common these days. I wouldnt say its particularly scary, but there were two bone chilling scenes (first look into the well and the basement). Couldnt recite anything bad about the movie, maybe I ll bump it up to a nine, even the ending is fine. Expand

Very good lead actor, but they should have gotten into his head a bit more for his reasoning behind the crime - it was ultimately an evil act, but hearing the his thoughts in the written version made me understand - if not sympathise - his crime a little more. Overall I found it a very enjoyable film - a horror that gets under your skin without forcing jump scares down your throat every five minutes. The cheesy ending didn't change anything important about how the story ultimately ends, though I do feel that people might find it all a bit dull if they haven't read King's version first. Expand

From the compilation Full Dark No Stars, arrives the fourth film adaptation of Stephen King this year and like what happened with It and Gerald's Game, 1922 turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
Full Dark, No Stars is a compilation of four novellas, two of those stories have already been adapted with very poor results, so I must say that I had my doubts about this one, especially since the four stories are pretty good, but like many times before when it comes to adapt King's stories for various reasons they don't end up working.

But 1922 follows exactly the source material and it really gets into the plot of guilt and rage that hit the main character incarnated by an excellent Thomas Jane, there is a constant tension while we see a man corroded and consumed by his sins.
1922 it's a dark story, but it's not a story that falls into the cheap scare because that is not its demagrophic, this is a slower story, more inclined towards psychological torture instead of graphics depictions of violence.

I don't want to tell more because the interesting thing is to live the experience of the story, I repeat, it's a bit slow, I admit that I did not like that very much because there are certain parts where the fluidity of the narrative stops too much, but in general that rhythm has its reason because as I said 1922 is a psychological horror film, there are no twists, no shockers, no scare jumps, what keeps you interested is the story and in my opinion it is worth it.

Another good result for Netflix this year and fortunately another good addition for King's legacy beyond literature.

Thomas Jane is kinda terrible in this, but not in a way that ruins the movie necessarily. He's a good enough actor, but his accent is not held in check, he chews every word of every sentence as if it's fried and corn fed and his dirt limned constantly makes him seem like a mud man - it constantly takes you out of the movie. This is a fairly straightforward story for the most part, but these stand out as egregious compared to the rest.

The whole film could have used a touch more of the surreal, more psychology from the imagery and the presentation, but it still works and its minor flourishes are fine. The rats are all professional, and do their parts with aplomb. Not much CGI detected. That's always a win.

Decent take on the novella by King. The story's descriptions is what made the it so good and it didn't translate that well into a movie. I didn't care for the actor's voice-over narration at all either. Lots of times it made me cringe...

The story goes will in the first half but in second half it appeares to be building up some momentum but never delivers. There was some problem with pacing and editing. Film could have been more short.

Overall, I can say that it was different experience watching this movie. Will not say that I enjoyed it but yes it was a different one.

The story of this movie is bland and forgettable, the basic plot of killing someone and being consumed by visual representations of guilt is done to death (haha) and was not innovated upon much here. I did like the story of the son but the film would have been far more interesting if that plot were focused on more. Although the designs of certain '''hauntings''' are pretty impressive and the acting definitely has talent behind it, I'm sure this tale would have been better kept in the books. Expand
