What sets Ghost Recon apart from other squad based shooters is its command map.
-
Even if youre not a subscriber to the Xbox Live service, this game packs quite a punch with plenty of modes and missions.
-
Simply spectacular.
-
The gameplay is very nice, but were lacking seriously in the visuals department. While the levels are huge, there is this thick fog around most of them.
-
Official Xbox MagazineThe mix of stealth, assault, night-time and other types of missions means that things never get repetitive. [Dec 2002, p.140]
-
Cheat Code CentralIt's nice to see that developers taking the time to make this game true to Tom Clancy's vision.
-
A thinking person's shooter, and provides some solid, tense gameplay... The single player mode is good, the multiplayer outstanding.
-
The simplification of the controls from the PC version to the XBOX version makes it much more accessible to those that are unfamiliar with the Rainbow Six/Ghost Recon games.
-
Its slow pace, one-hit kills, and ugly graphics may turn off some gamers, but those willing to put some time and effort into the game will find a rewarding first-person shooter.
-
Dated visuals, inconsistent AI, and lack of dynamic enemy placement cost it a few points. With that said, if youre looking for an engaging and thoughtful shooter for the Xbox, I highly recommend you add Ghost Recon to your arsenal.
-
A little sluggish in the graphical department. While in no way is this game painful to look at there are just some minor things that kept it from being a visually stunning title.
-
The need to command troops might not suit everyone, or the slower, more measured approach to combat. But if you want a unique war game for your console, Ghost Recon is your only choice.
-
Game InformerSurprisingly, there is very little graphical degradation that I could detect, and the control scheme has been shunted over to the Xbox controller with a decent amount of effectiveness. [Dec 2002, p.141]
-
netjakThough the Xbox version has a very fun multiplayer mode, Ghost Recon has a lot to offer solo players even after the game's 15 missions are completed.
-
It would have been nice if the game had updated graphics and better squad AI, but as it is, this is a great game nonetheless.
-
If you like Tom Clancy, first person shooters and outdoor combat, this game is a must buy!
-
Its unwavering adherence to tactical gameplay will exclude a number of quick twitch gamers, but for those with a little patience, this is a solid, engrossing port.
-
It's fun. Not mind-blowing, but fun.
-
Xbox Nation MagazineAlthough it's by no means a cakewalk, Ghost's single-player campaign works as sort of a live fire exercise for the real deal on Xbox Live. [Winter 2002, p.101]
-
GMR MagazineThere's not much of a graphical upgrade from the PC version, but the interface and audio is improved. Goes great with Xbox live. [Feb 2003, p.95]
-
A fantastic port - and unquestionably best on Xbox - but it suffers in part thanks to last century's tech and in part because pathetic team killing gits thrive in the current Live community.
-
Surprisingly, the graphics look much better than the game's PC counterpart - the faces are much more detailed and the environments look crisp and sharp. [Dec 2002, p.170]
-
The controls and interface for Ghost Recon have been streamlined very well for the console controller.
-
Where its online options are concerned, Ghost Recon is simply one of the best reasons to get Xbox Live.
-
Play MagazineCaution and calculated planning provide the most satisfying rewards, taking the single-player experience into some unexpectedly satisfying territory. [Jan 2003, p.81]
-
A blast to play for those who enjoy strategic and realistic games, and is one of the first of its kind on the Xbox... [but it] does host an array of problems including dull and uninspired graphics, atrocious lag in multiplayer, and some diminishing gameplay design flaws.
-
Electronic Gaming MonthlyIntense, exciting and hella fun. [Dec 2002, p.270]
-
A great game... [but y]ou'll need to ask yourself if your attention span can tolerate a game requiring planning and strategy with sporadic action as the payoff.
-
A tired old game with very little to say for itself. Please Tom Clancy, we know it made for good source material for your books but leave the Cold War behind. It's over already.
