Not only was it a truly revolutionizing experience for me -- it was also revolutionizing for gaming as a whole.     Halo is the franchise i ever love, but that game, in my opinion is one of the top 3 game of the series, the soundtrack is spotless and the adventure is epic.

    Halo: Combat Evolved still a game best played with friends. Had a great time powering through this one, its been a while since I've finished the whole thing in a night. Found a bunch of glitches. It having been a launch title for the original Xbox it holds up pretty well still. I'm really glad they changed Cortana's design in newer games even though I love purple.     The reason I play shooters to this day. Halo was the first game I ever played on my Xbox and the main reason I still purchase an Xbox. Halo has an amazing story with great characters.

    Pese a los años sigue siendo un gran fps de acción y sci-fi, la historia esta bien, los niveles, enemigos y armas son clásicos hasta el día de hoy muy buen juego.
    Punto positivos: gameplay, historia, armas, escenarios,
    Negativos: hay algunos niveles sobre todo al final que se sienten repetitivos pero nada que dañe demasiado la experiencia.

    The game that got me onboard with the Xbox console and the FPS genre. The game is a master piece. From it's graphically fidelity that was limited to 64 GB of RAM, to it's iconic musical score, to it's engaging single player campaign, to it's transcendent multiplayer set up.

    Halo is the GoldenEye of its time. It is an absolute must-play title, bar none.

    The campaign is a strong point with many unforgettable sections, but the absolute best reason to play this game, even now, is because of the co-op in campaign mode; I have so many good memories of feeling myself get more intensely engaged as I cover for my friend, and vice versa. Easily worth playing through all 10 levels.

    Other strong points include a cinematic-level soundtrack, effective/engaging controls, and occasionally highly unpredictable AI.

    Multi-player outside of co-op was solid, but much better in Halo 2, while the campaign for Halo 2 was less engaging to me story-wise. The weakest point about this game is that it's just not for everyone; I can imagine someone wanting Borderlands or Call of Duty and shunning this, though they probably both got a little bit of their magic from this.

    Just like Doom, Quake, and Goldeneye Halo is a legend in the FPS genre. With it's closed to open level design to it's split screen co-op and multiplayer Halo CE is a must have for any Xbox owner. Whether that be the original verson or the remastered Xbox One version. It is hard to imagine now that we are 20 years removed from its release but Halo absolutely revolutionized the genre, asJust like Doom, Quake, and Goldeneye Halo is a legend in the FPS genre.     This game... this masterpiece literally pioneered console gaming, every time I replay it the controls feel very natural. It also started an absolute juggernaut of a gaming experience... just don't attempt to touch a moving vehicle, because that's a absolute horrible idea

    Played this game nearly 20 years after release so unsurprisingly it doesn't hold a candle to current generation games. However, it held up better than I expected and was certainly fun, if a little sparse.

    Pure greatness. This game was the birth of many modern shooters. The gameplay holds up even to this day and the Campian is very memorable. Multiplayer is solid if a little unbalanced. The first halo is still one of the best.

    HALO: Combat Evolved is way ahead of its time, and probably marks its place as the best FPS game ever.
    It's not a perfect game, even if the power of nostalgia blinds me to its few flaws, but it remains as one of the best experiences I've had in gaming.

    How incredibly lucky of Microsoft to have one of their launch titles for the OG Xbox be not only a massive critical success, but also capable of launching a whole new franchise and with Bungie even setting the standard for console shooters to come, much like RareWare before them. Halo is one of the most important and influential FPS games of all time, creating a whole new generation of players, eventually giving way to sequels that would popularize the use of Xbox Live and becoming a big name in pop culture at large. I, myself, have very little experience with this series, only playing scattered bits of multiplayer every so often. I was curious to see not only if the original game in the series is able to hold up close to 20 years after its release, but also to see if it can make me into a fan. In many respects, Halo: CE does hold up remarkably well, and I'm glad I finally had the chance to experience it, but there is definitely a lot of room for improvement here.

    After a run-in with alien forces called the Covenant, you take control of super soldier Master Chief, whom, along with an AI companion named Cortana, land on a giant ring world aptly named Halo. You're charged with not only rescuing survivors on Halo, but also to stop the Covenant from using it as a possible weapon against Earth. The plot itself is rather bog-standard in the grand scheme of things, with loads of contrivances and use of technology that, bafflingly, never gets brought up or used before it is most convenient to the plot. I do enjoy some of the characters like Cortana and Major Johnson, but most everyone else, including the Master Chief, are pretty bare in comparison. For its time, the story was certainly far more ambitious compared to the average FPS, but it certainly feels like the first game in the series. The same can also be said for the game's visuals. While many of the environments are beautifully rendered and dripping with atmosphere, some of the character models do look pretty ugly, with even worse lip syncing. The soundtrack, though, is fantastic and has held up considerably well (even if it can feel out of place a lot of the time).

    Of course, the real meat of what made Halo an industry standard is in its gameplay. The game is divided into six chapters, and you travel various locations mowing down enemies and getting to the end destination. Since Halo was initially a console exclusive at the time, it was important for Bungie to nail down the controls with the Xbox controller, and man did they nail it. Halo is one of those games where you can still comfortably play with a gamepad to this day, perfect for those that aren't used to mouse and keyboard. The movement is silky smooth and each of the weapons feel just as gratifying. You are only allowed two primary weapons at a time, but it's not difficult to find ones you are more comfortable using as enemies and allies alike drop them frequently. The enemy AI can range from tactical and effective, to blindly charging standing out in the open like fools. Some of them, like the grunts, even react to different circumstances, like Covenant leaders being taken out or being handed a grenade. Ally AI is actually surprisingly effective here. If you are riding around in a vehicle, one can easily take shotgun or man the turret and help you mow down enemies, even performing victory fist bumps after a kill. They're are many little attentions to detail that are always greatly appreciated. Speaking of which, on occasion you'll even be given different vehicles to pilot, like an all terrain Warthog, a gliding Ghost or a flying Banshee. The Warthog takes a bit of getting used to, but the Ghost and Banshee are a blast to control. While Halo works great as a single-player experience, it is at its best in Co-op with a friend. There are so many more laughs and memorable moments you can create with a friend, and it can make going through some of the more arduous sections a lot more comfortable.

    Which leads me to the level design. The more open-ended environments aren't an issue.In fact, those levels are where the game shines best. It's when you get to the more claustrophobic temples that it starts to falter. Much of the layout and design of these more linear stages blend in with one another, making it easy to get lost if you don't know what you're doing, especially since the game doesn't point you in the right direction a lot of the time. The game also has you backtracking halfway through, with only a bit of variation to the stages, so it ends up being visually dull after a point.

    So, no, I don't think Halo is the masterpiece that many consider it to be. However, I did enjoy my time with the game and it managed to peak my interest in the rest of the series. It's a product of its time, but it's absolutely worth looking back on if you have never experienced the original or if it's been a good while since you first landed on that ring world.    … Expand

The ship comes across a weapon from an ancient society known as the Forrunners, this weapon is a giant artificial world in the shape of a ring as the Pillar of Autumn is attacked you escape to the ring in a life boat and the ship crash landed on the ring. This ring contains a multitude of creatures kept in containment but where accidentally released by the Covenant, the creatures are parasitic life forms and you must fight through it all and find a way to destroy the ring before it is used to wipe out all sentient life in the galaxy, it was designed to stop the flood by killing its food which is sentient life. Then there is the multiplayer which back in the day was incredible and allowed to have to be in the same room as a friend your playing with and it was very fun to play the whole campaign co-op with my best friends, those were the days back in 2001 this game is still incredible to this day as an anniversary version was released in 2010 or 2011 I believe that overhauled on the graphics and added some other features like audio improvement and it made Marty O’ Donnell’s incredible music a bit louder in gameplay. Overall this game was and still is a masterpiece and I think it’s always gonna be better than many games today and if you’ve never played this game I suggest you get to it because it is a true original that helped make Xbox what it is today.… Expand

    I didn't play this game at the time. I played it just a few months ago at MCC and although it's entertaining and I understand its importance, the game has a lot of repetitive moments and the ending where you escape from the Halo facing Guilty Spark is a pain.

This game is my opinion is truly a masterpiece in every way I’ve beaten the game about 5 or 6 times and just can’t stop playing I truly think this game defines the FPS genre as a whole I think the way the game was made in terms of level design and story really shows. Overall if you looking to buy this game or haven’t bought it I would, My rating for this game is 98/100 Now I would give this game a 100/100 but there are a few things that I could pick at SPOILER ALERT: the mission “two betrayals” is the only mission in the entire game that I don’t love but also don’t hate I think replaying “assault on the control room” backwards is a bit weird but still A good mission it’s basically just “assault on the control room” but harder. And then there’s rock launcher flood which also kinda suck because it basically never tells you if there going to be there so if your playing it for the first time your going to explode. Other than that this game is fun and a great game even though these things are annoying they still promote challenge and fun. best missions IN MY OPINION: “The Library” “Keyes” “The Maw” -The Library
    Ok so basically I k ow most people hate “the library” for its very repetitive 4 floor level gameplay but I think this mission really is one of the best, see in the mission 343 guilty spark the flood are introduced and then the library is right after that, the library helps you learn your way around the flood for the the next 3 missions in the game so you have experience or at least know what to expect.

    -Keyes
    So even though this is another mission somewhat similar to “two betrayals“ except shorter and more corridor type shooting to be it’s a great mission, taking you back to the beginning we’re you started can show to the player that the game is coming to an end in which Keyes is the 9/10 mission, overall I love this mission i don’t know why but for some reasons it’s entertaining, another thing about this backwards level design is that it’s there to show the player the covenant are being overrun by flood I think this creates a climactic type feel into the game and help rise to the top of the story, anyways overall great mission.

    -The Maw.
    I truly think that this is the BEST FPS ENDING IN HISTORY basically it takes you back to the pillar of autumn but this time it’s override by flood, one thing I love about this mission that I love is that it’s not to long but also not to short this mission has the perfect length to a game ending in my opinion so for those who hate the library this may be a side of relief. The ending with the worth of is really cool and a great ending to a FPS game.

    For me personally, Halo: Combat Evolved was the main reason to buy a Xbox console. Everything about this game from graphics to gameplay is nearly perfect. The campaign and soundtrack are groundbreaking and the multiplayer is unique. You have to check it out, no matter what genres you like!

One thing to remember about the campaign: BEWARE OF THE ROCKET FLOOD. The graphics are amazing for the art style and IMO, the graphics still hold up today because of the art style. Now for the multiplayer. I haven't played that much multiplayer, but what I have played, it's always fun. I never had 16 people to play with at once, so the big maps are more about screen peaking or playing hide and go seek. The best game modes to play with two to four people are slayer or rocket slayer, and it does not matter what map you are on. This is truly a must-play title.… Expand

    One of the best games ever to be released up to date, the fact that a game like this reigns supreme after so many years just shows how much of the heart of the developers where poured into making this game. I still remember this game being my first ever game, and it is thanks to this game alone that I am a person who plays this up to this day in October of 2020.

    When I first played combat evolved I was an 18 year old boy who did not play video games that much back then. But CE opened a whole world to me, it introduced me first person shooters, great visuals and story-telling and a balanced and perfect game play, And since then I can't stop playing it.

    Revolutionary for first person shooters and the future of the Xbox. There's so much fun to be had with the combat this game offers. Together with the mystery of the halo ring as you continuously progress through the levels and the story with great moments such as the introduction of the flood it is a game you must play if you haven't played it.

    I like this game, but my big problems with it are difficulty and the second half. When it comes to difficulty, the absence of vehicle-jacking and dual-wielding ment it was harder for me to get past most encounters. While I generally don't like regenerative health, I wish there was at peast some pretty slow regenerative health, because it's abscence lead to so many deaths. When it comes toI like this game, but my big problems with it are difficulty and the second half.     People Say Halo Combat Evolved did not age well, but they say Half-life aged well! Both games are great and masterpieces in their own genre, but halo combat evolved really helped half-life 2 to became a better game than the original.

    Combat Evolved is amongst the most important video games ever made. It established the xbox and brought first person shooters back on top again, everything about this game was revolutionary, the controller, the level design, the story and it's difficulty. Easily one of the best!
