Most things about this game are good...the sound, graphics, AI, etc, but its multiplayer just lacks what a first person shooter really needs. I remember when Nintendo 64 was new, and Goldeneye had just come out. At that time, that probably the best first person shooter. Then for the PC, Counterstrike came out. Counterstrike is probably still the best first person shooter. I seriously, SERIOUSLY think this game is the most overhyped game in the history of videogames. What the hell? I mean its good, but its not super duper orgasm good. Single player is just mediocre, ive played FPS similar such as Red Faction. Trust me this game is not that spectacular. Sure its fun, but it seriously is over hyped.

A very fun game, don't get me wrong, but it is very overrated. 16-player matches, in depth Single-player mode, but that's about it. :/

First of all, I have to say that I am NOT a Sony fanboy. Now that that's out of the way, I can honestly review this game. First of all, the graphics are really nice for its time. It rivals ICO and MGS2. The AI is really smart, but the enemies are just retarded. They look like something out of Ratchet and Clank or Mario. The story is okay, could have been better. I crashed so many times trying to get to drive with out skidding all over the place. It just blew up, taking me down with it. The bosses are good. Overall, though, I liked the game. The game is fun at first but after a while it just gets repetative. I would rather play a game that keeps my intrest longer. I agree with how the controls are wonderful, the graphics are great, and I don't even mind shooting the same enemy that is a different color. It just gets, boring. Still a good game to buy but don't set your hopes too high.

When I first played Halo, I thought, cheesy space shooter with a generic badass main character and a **** story.... good gameplay, and playing with my friends was cool for a console game. I liked it enough. Nothing really special.... Now it's the most overrated game series of all time. Who knew?

Let's begin by saying that, though I wouldn't say the game is ripping off other IPs (either movies or video games), it's clear to me where did the Bungie folks get their inspiration from. Now the actual review.

    - Graphics and music: I loved the music, but the graphics are just okay. It's really cool to be able to switch between the original graphics and the remastered ones. There are some lighting problems and some areas are too dark, also ponds of green water where you can't see **** and you don't know where to go.

    - Story: It's nothing to lose your lose your sleep over, really. The Master Chief is utterly boring and uninspiring. Fortunately we have Cortana, his virtual companion, who can access stuff and guides you throughout the campaign. She's a lot more interesting and her voice acting is terrific.

    - Gameplay: the story is divided into 10 missions, taking you around 1 hour to complete each. These long missions are more like Chapters than actual missions (you have multiple objectives in each of them, which are revealed to you sequentially). I prefer short missions, where you can actually accomplish something during a small game session, other than just running from Checkpoint A to Checkpoint B.

    - Combat Mechanics: maybe this is the weakest aspect of the game, and here is why: there's no aiming mechanism, so you must get close to your targets in order to shoot them down. This is okay for the first half of the game, since you can kill them fairly easy without endangering yourself. But, the second part gets tricky. Enemies explode, throw grenades, or carry a rocket launcher, so a lot of them will instantly kill you or land a critical hit on you; while requiring many shots to go down. I also noticed that a lot of mob groups keep spawning on and on. So, oftentimes there's no point in stopping to kill them, your best option is just running for it.

    - Level Design: I didn't really like it. I felt like I was playing the same generic 3 or 4 maps over and over.

    - Enemies: there isn't a great variety of them. And no boss... yes, NO BOSS FIGHT! Huge letdown.

    - Weaponry: there are like 6 different types of weapons and you'll frequently feel underpowered (unless you have a shotgun with you). Ammo for the more powerful weapons is scarce, forcing you to switch, which is something positive.

    - Vehicles and turrets: this is also a great addition. I really enjoyed making my way through crowds after hijacking an alien vehicle or climbing into a turret (specially when ammo was running low) to obliterate incoming waves of foes.

This game did not age that well, it is still a good game, but it does seem (at least in multiplayer standards) that gun balance was not really something that was paid attention too, it can be really fun and addicting, but as long as the other guy isn't camping the flag with a rocket launcher.

I have a confession to make, this was the first time I have never sat down and played through the campaign of Halo before. The sad truth is, I never had the chance. I grew up with Nintendo’s and PlayStations so when I purchased an Xbox this year, its the first Xbox I have ever owned. So looking at this game in 2017, it’s still a solid game with great shooting mechanics. I can say with absolute positivity that this game has aged well. Obviously, with the Master Chief Collection, it’s gotten some work was done to it aesthetically but it looks fine. The shooting felt very tight, I didn’t like the default control scheme but the game allowed me to change that and once I made the switch. It felt good.

My big complaint about this game is the level design though. It felt like I would go through an area, reach the destination and then have to backtrack and redo everything I just did. In some areas, it felt like I did that multiple times. There were some levels where I just completely got lost because everything looked the same. My hope is the developers learned this and fixed this in future iterations.

Halo is an iconic series and I feel like all gamers should play Halo and I feel more like a true gamer now that I’ve experienced Halo. Its still aged well and I do recommend picking up the collection.

That's how impactful the game was when it first came out. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware of it back then and I never played games growing up, so I didn't care for any of it.

Playing Halo in 2021, in order to fully enjoy what it brought to the table you have to experience other games from that era, without it, you'll never truly understand why it's praised. Either way:

The gameplay still feels tremendously solid and it's always fun. The story wasn't. By today's standards, the campaign is pretty much just a backdrop for the action which you don't really pay attention to. Its most impactful moments felt flat to me; it didn't help I was spoiled on one of those. The mission design was also extremely boring, there are some missions which is the same copy and paste room over and over and over, always fighting the same enemy faction. There is also one mission which asks the player to traverse the environment that they already played through during the previous mission. The lack of waypoints during those, coupled with the same bland looking rooms made it so I pulled a YouTube guide more than once to figure out where to go. The score is phenomenal when it actually plays, which is not very often. The lack of score for a lot of the moments are praised by a lot of fans but to me it made the environments feel even more bland when all I could hear were my footsteps in a massive cargo bay while I tried to look for a button to press in order to progress, for example.

Overall, while I have nothing but the utmost respect for Bungie for creating such a massive and innovating game, back when it first came out, it, sadly, in my eyes, just doesn't stand up to the test of time, besides the gameplay and soundtrack.

After you've played through about half of it you get bored of how this is green or that kind of building is always purple of that creature is always yellow and it just doesn't have the appeal anymore. But the biggest problem of the game would have to be in it's multiplayer. It's one of the cheapest I've ever played in this aspect. You could just hide in one room and pick off people as they come in with a shotgun. Also, sniping is totally unfair, as it is really powerful, health is really too low, and what's up with the melee attack?(hitting people) I charged up my plasma pistol and shot someone in the head with it but hardly made a dent, then they hit me with the SAME weapon and killed me in 1 or 2 hits! The vehicles especially are too cheap, namely, the tank. The huge arenas are also unnecessary as there are usually only 2 to 4 people playing. (unless online). Also, if you think about it, Halo isn't really that new. We've all seen the plasma this, and the laser that, and the ones in Halo aren't exactly totally different. The grenades are all glitched. It's too easy to throw a grenade from like a hundred feet away and kill someone immedietaly. This is not a game that could be improved that much more, so I'm not expecting Halo 2 to be the "Best Game Of The Year" Expand

This game is just a sorry attempt at recreating Half-Life. You have a special life saving suit. There are little parasitic animals everywhere. And it involves the Marines. The only difference is Half-Life is a quadrillion times deeper and scarier and Gordon Freeman could kick the master chiefs ass any day.

You only have to look at the similarities, for example: The enemies in the original Unreal and those in Halo, in fact thats the first thing that I noticed! All the rest were boring and poorly made. Through virtually every level I found myself running into fifty of the same room time and time again. Then guess what, once you meet the Flood (a lame copy of Half-life's aliens) you go back and do all the same boring missions backwards, only difference is that now you must fight the flood. The most annoying level called the Library consisted of your character 'Master Chief' running around in circles through numerous floors that all looked exactly the same. Multiplayer is nothing special, Battlefield 1942 blows it away in vehicles, environment, and fun. Everyone claims other games copied this, what about what Halo copied? Name a scene in the movie Aliens and Halo has copied it, from the nervous marine "we're all gonna die man!" to the tough black 'Sarge' "Pull yourself together." Not to mention how the pelican bears a striking resemblance to the transport in Aliens. The guns are all copied from Aliens, and what the movie had in deadly and mysterious enemies Halo miserably lacks. Throughout the whole game there are only about five total enemies each with of course one way to kill them or else you'd be wasting ammo. There are miserably weak grunts which are minute aliens who do nothing then an enormous leap is made to the elites which simply slaughter all your squadmates (they never last more then the first battle) and the shield toting aliens who are just plain annoying with their weak guns and stupid shields. This game was lame and nowhere near expectations. Expand

There is a part in the game where you meet the flood almost every time you move forwards and they will first try to get you from behind, it's not smartly done, too predictable and just becomes tiring and repetitive.
Then you get to the end point of the game which is just a great showcase to show how piss poor the controls are for the warthog.

I played this on my OG XBOX through component leads and it looks great sadly not the best experience gameplay wise.

I'm being generous with this score.

In fact I'm actually pretty glad that I never played it, because at the end of the day its an extremely mediocre game.

The first and most noticeable thing about the game that I found myself hating were the weapons and overall gunplay, the weapons in halo in addition to being completely uninspired have lackluster sound effects and animations for the most part, and many of the weapons are underpowered thus making the plasma pistol and pistol the best loadout for most of an individuals play through, unless of course you are playing on average difficulty which was so mind numbingly easy it made me contemplate suicide.

The assault rifle doesn't **** shoot straight, the plasma rifle does more dps than the plasma pistol but because of the regenerating shield system damage per shot ofter takes precedence over damage per second since(and this is much truer on harder difficulties than on lower ones) its best to stay fairly close to cover while shooting enemies so you can engage in the hide till you heal **** at your convenience, the needler pretty much requires you to empty half a clip into an enemy to kill it and is a boring weapon that doesn't require any semblance of skill to use properly, and the rocket launcher, shotgun, and sniper rifle rarely show up during the course of a play though which is disappointing because out of all the weapons in the game they are by far the best in the game due to their beefier sound effects and better functionality than the other weapons. Granted it might have made halo which is already easy even easier had these weapons showed up more often but there is nothing inherently wrong with a game being easy or inherently right with a game being hard. Difficulty is something I really only complain about when I dislike the underlying for the game being easy, in the case of halo what I dislike are projectile attacks that move so fast that they usually can't be dodged and the health system which allows one to soak up damage like a sponge and recover shields at his convenience, as well as the slow easy and tiresome gunplay and enemy types, which can hardly be said to require different tactics to beat. The grunts can be killed simply by shooting them with anything or throwing any grenade at them and if you kill their commanders they'll just run around and give you another opportunity to shoot them by running around like a couple of **** in spite of the fact that they were honestly pretty harmless to begin with, they are equipped with plasma pistols but for some mysterious reason they lack the ability to charge them up, you can pretty much just play peek a boo with them and slowly pick them off with any weapon before attacking the elites and because they never charge up their pistols you won't have to worry about losing your sheilds fighting them this way, additionally its entirely too easy to stick plasma grenades to them which ironically enough they happen to drop like candy upon dying, the jackals are only slightly more threatening than the grunts they for some mysterious reason can charge up their plasma pistols while the grunts cannot and the fact that they are equipped with the exact same weapon as most grunts is one of the things I dislike about the game, it simply does not take orthogonal enemy designs far enough, the strategy for dealing with jackals is pretty much the same as the strategy for dealing with elites; attack their weak spot and/or them with plasma then either attack their weak spot or hit them with anything till they are dead, alternatively meleeing them works pretty well if you are close enough and grenades are more effective against jackals than they are against elites because jackals are far more stationary but its still not a big enough difference in enemy design to make the game interesting and if you compare the orthogonal level designs in this game to the ones in say quake the difference is pretty clear. In quake you have hitscan enemies, that require you to take cover and pop in and out of it to shoot them, there is a dude with a grenade launcher that requires you to dodge his grenades(yes you can actually **** dodge most projectiles in that game instead of soaking them up like a sponge) and also tries to chainsaw you if you get close, and most of the enemies in that game require vastly differ methods of movement to to deal with their attacks and some are more effectively dealt with by certain weapons than with others.

I could say more about the game but I've reached the character limit, 5000 is far to few for a full length critique.

We can use a maximum of two weapons with an incredible variety of weapons throughout the game, which makes the game incredibly boring and repetitive, not only mechanically, but also as a level design, the game makes you walk around the same places like a closed box from start to finish. Designs and mechanics Aside from the constant repetition, the game's lack of variety is another matter. But the level design is atrocious, and I mean that in all its negative severity. There are very few quest markers, and when they are present, they don’t show you where to go, only where you need to end up. I spent just as much time enjoying the shooting as I did lost and frustrated, staring at the same hallways over and over, wondering where I was going wrong.

And when I did find where I was supposed to be going, Halo CE took a dead halibut and slapped me in the face with it. This game is HARD, y’all. Between the Flood level that finds you frantically running from enemies spawning endlessly all around you, to chain grenade explosions that kill you without having done anything wrong, you will die a lot, so I hope you have an excellent podcast on, because you won’t want all your attention to be on this. It’s too frustrating.

All of this, for a story that probably wasn’t particularly good even in its prime. You can see the twists and turns coming from last Tuesday (and I say that as a gamer who was somehow not previously spoiled).

TL;DR : I do not recommend this game. The levels are confusing mazes, the gauntlets that the game makes you run are too daunting even on Normal difficulty, and the story was your average action movie you can stream on Netflix.

Did people even play Halo Reach then played this? or just fan boys all over the place??
this game literally sucks compared to Reach, for various reasons:
1- only handful of weapons to play with like for Humans you have 3 guns maybe and the covenant 3 2- Repetitive game play and arenas 3- There is 4 types of enemies with different "colors" 4- Your teammates A.I. is so broken they can't

5- You totally forget about the story and what's happening because of the repetitive things you keep doing
6- You can't take the Covenant sword from fallen enemies (In Reach you could)
7- Boring and not at all fun that every corner there is a covenant soldier that is Camouflaged with the sword (1 hit 1 kill)
8- While in the vehicle (e.g. the Scorpion) you lose health and armor instead of the vehicle?????

Just don't play this garbage version of Halo.. Skip it

    P.S. YES I know it's 2020 and this game is 2001 lol

A dreadful game. The hype is all for nothing. Compared to a PC game its nothing even Daiktana is better than this. The sequel haven't improved on it either!

I recently bought an xbox with halo expecting it to be like everyone says. but when i do play it its alright at the start but damn does it get boring!! the levels are boring and are like the same. the monsters are corny and killing them are repetitive. and the weapons are lame. there needs to be more meatier weapons but all they got are stupid alien weapons which are boring to play with.I recently bought an xbox with halo expecting it to be like everyone says. but when i do play it its alright at the start but damn does it get boring!! the levels are boring and are like the same. the monsters are corny and killing them are repetitive. and the weapons are lame. there needs to be more meatier weapons but all they got are stupid alien weapons which are boring to play with. this game is soooooo over rated. there are so many better games out there. Buddy, tactics involves more than deciding what direction to walk in or having to make choices. It's about constructing a plan and following it through as YOUR ACTIONS HAVE AN INFLUENCE ON WHAT HAPPENS NEXT. You cannot possibly have a linear tactical game. If you do, then what you're getting might look like tactics, but it ain't. Expand

And they said Assassin's Creed was repetitive? As FPS games go, this is atrocious. Particularly multiplayer where it's like fighting in a cardboard box... "Where are they hiding? Oh. Over there. That's because the levels are so small"

Halo isn't a very good first person shooter. I know, I know. You're a Halo fanboy and you think I'm just a mindless hater. You think I'm just going along with the crowd. That I'm some sort of dude who enjoys hopping on bandwagons. Well, no... that's not really the case. I've thought about this for a long while. I've never liked Halo. I've never liked Halo. Even back when it first came out in 2000, it didn't impress me. I'm not a guy who likes to be counter-culture, or go against popular opinion for its own sake. There are many popular games I do enjoy. It's not that at all. And here right now, I'm going to explain in detail why Halo is terrible, so you can't accuse me of being a mindless hater. The HUD of Halo is just annoying. Instead of being like other contemporary FPSs, Halo insists on representing all of its ammo onscreen as lots and lots of tiny bullets, instead of simple easy to read numbers. This is lame. There is no need to fill up the top corner of the screen with rows and rows of bullet symbols, just show us a **** number. Like... if it said 60 in the corner? That would be fine, that would work for me. I can read and count, I know what 60 means. 60 means that there are 60 rounds in my magazine, I don't need to see a ton of tiny **** bullets up there. Halo's universe is a complete ripoff of Aliens and various other scifi properties. This shows a startling dearth of imagination on Bungie's part. Seriously, it's not an homage, it's a straight ripoff. This is not subtle, this is hitting you over your head with a sledgehammer. The right way to do it would be something along the lines of Mass Effect. With ME, you can tell that the creators at BioWare had an appreciation and respect for scifi and were influenced by all those works, while creating their own unique and imaginative new universe. They had influences, they did not outright copy. Halo does not do this, Halo is the result of Bungie ripping off other scifi works and cobbling them all together. I find this deeply objectionable.

Let's look at Master Chief. Master Chief as a super soldier is a ripoff of a lot of stuff like BattleTech and Warhammer 40K. He has been surgically engineered to be a superhuman warrior, just like the Space Marines of the Imperium in WH40k. He is physically much larger then a normal human being and possesses much greater strength and athletic capabilities, just like Space Marines and also the genetically engineered Clan Elementals in BattleTech. Then he dons the advanced Mjolnir power armor. This power armor further enhances his strength and survivability in combat, just like Space Marine armor and Elemental suits. Starship Troopers is another example of scifi power armor. His training and origin story in "The Fall of Reach" novel even reads just like Robert Thurston's classic "The Way of the Clans" BattleTech novel. In the Halo novel, the Spartan program takes children and forms them into training cadres to teach them how to become highly capable and skilled soldiers. Their sole purpose is to become the best warrior mankind can produce. This is almost identical to the sibkos, or sibling companies, that the Clans use in BattleTech. If you liked The Fall of Reach, I recommend you go and check out "The Jade Phoenix Trilogy" omnibus edition, which contains "The Way of the Clans." You'll find that The Fall of Reach is simply a pale shadow of Thurston's work.

Most of what Halo rips off is Aliens, however. That's really the core complaint. Bungie just decided to watch Aliens a lot and uh... rip off the entire film. If they were making an Aliens FPS, this wouldn't be a problem. In fact, that would be great. However, I find it appalling that they ripped off this great film to create their brand new IP. That's incredibly distasteful. And no, it wasn't just ripping off the vague concept of a "space marine." Doom did that and that was fine. There is nothing wrong with taking a general concept like a "space marine" and doing your own thing with it. However, Bungie went far beyond just using that idea. They ripped off almost every element of Aliens. Let's take a closer look at the stuff they ripped off. Master Chief's cryo chamber at the beginning of Halo is a ripoff of the cryostasis chamber in Aliens. Same exact design and function. The Pelican dropship is a clear ripoff of Aliens' UD4L Cheyenne dropship. In Halo 3, there's even a cinematic cutscene that shows the **** layout of the Pelican, which has two seats, one lower down and to the right, with another elevated position on the left. This is almost identical to the **** positions on the Cheyenne. I'm not sure if any dropship pilot in a Halo game ever uttered the line, "We're in the pipe, 5 by 5." but it would not surprise me at all if they did.

Poor. Atrocious selection of weapons, and very limited unique enemies. The scenery has simply been multiplied a thousand times, so when you're playing campaign it feels like you're running through the same area again and again. Inferior shooter. Buy half-life instead.

How rubbish is this? Where is this big hype about it gone? Oh yes, its shite. This is like another game, so ok it is a good game and can be fun, but it still isn't a amazing game that I should have been so its a let down so the vote should be a let down as well!

I'm been an FPS gamer for years and I figured Halo would be good when it came out. I heard a lot of good talk about it. Unfortunately, it was really just... crap. Halo either deserves a '10' or a '0': '10' if you base the score on sales; the game's capacity in attracting new gamers to this form of electronic entertainment; on the measure of how much of a camoufalging influence 'hype' can have on the actual quality of a product; and on the potential for single game to save a video game console. However, it's '0' if you predicate your score on gameplay, originality, grpahics, sound and replay value. Given McDonald's and 50 Cent sell like hotcakes, have fans up the yin-yang and account for the livelyhoods of inumerable people, it's obvious success and popularity don't always equate to quality. As a game, Halo fails horribly. As a marketing tool, Halo literally HAS a halo! Expand
