    One of the first games I ever played, I'm not kidding when I said I used to play this game with my father when I was around 3 years old. Irresponsible parenting aside, I love this game with all my heart, it undoubtedly has shaped who I am and offers a lot of fond memories I doubt I'll ever forget. The original trilogy of the Halo games, along with its spin-offs are as close to the perfectOne of the first games I ever played, I'm not kidding when I said I used to play this game with my father when I was around 3 years old. Despite this, even the tarnish the likes Halo 5 and Infinite has left on the series is not enough to dent to legacy this game has created. However, this is the version worth playing, don't bother with MCC or Anniversary edition. If you got a functioning O.G. Xbox, find yourself a second-hand copy of it, and borrow your grandfather's old CRTA pinnacle not only for FPS games, but for video games in general.     Game-changing FPS that launched a thousand Xbox sales. Great looking, varied, with cool environments, an intriguing story and genuinely intelligent enemies to battle. Halo: Anniversary for the 360 gives the game a HD facelift making that the better option, but it's still a stone cold classic.

The graphics are obviously outdated but I found the anniversary edition (part of the Halo Collection on Game Pass) to be a solid remaster for those looking for some nostalgia. I fondly remember playing this as a clueless 9/10 year old during all nighter sleepovers with friends. I’m only slightly surprised at how well it’s aged. Great story and characters, balanced and fair game play, phenomenal maps, and quite solid AI. This game revolutionized the FPS genre and certainly deserves its must play status.… Expand

    Man, for an Xbox launch title in 2001 this game was crazily booming! With an amazing multiplayer, a great story, graphics (while dated) are great and overall, a fantastic start to the Xbox and Master Chief would become one of the biggest games icons in the 2000s.

    this game has so much atmosphere. it will literally consume you. 10/10 amazing and beautiful soundtrack as well that really fits the game.

    The campaign is nearly perfect, with great level design and an amazing story. While it has its flaws, its overall one of the greatest games of all time.

    A masterpiece of FPS games, Halo brings a memorable soundtrack, a combat that brings difficulty to the player and at the same time provides incredible fun, the franchise may not have maintained the same level in later games, but this is a work cousin.

    I think that halo has raised the bar in video games! And all other game designers are desperately trying to jump it! The music is perfect, the graphics are crisp and the game play is magnificent! The only game that will surpass halo in the next few years will be halo 2!

    It's a great game, i remember it was one of the first xbox games i played when i first got it, the other was KOTOR 1, though i was still a kid back then, and i was afwaid of the fwood. only one problem was that it had no XBOX LIVE! The online PC version had horrible network and didnt work to well as well, but Halo 2 did great with XBL.

    This game is what To Kill a Mockingbird or Gone With the Wind are in the reading world! The story could've been a little better, but was still really engaging with the flood plot twist and all. One of the great things about this game is how the pistol was actually fun to use! I loved Half Life and the sequel because they really moved the whole genre on a notch and did things that you never thought a game of that type could do. Halo is like that and pushes the bar even further with an amazingly detailed vision of future warfare. I loved Half Life and the sequel because they really moved the whole genre on a notch and did things that you never thought a game of that type could do. Halo is like that and pushes the bar even further with an amazingly detailed vision of future warfare. I would say that the graphics are INCREDIBLE given the year and the power available in an old Xbox - wait until you get onto Halo itself and you look out from a clifftop over a sea that slowly curves up into space. Stunning, even 7 years later. AI is terriffc, with genuinely tricky enemies throughout. Sounds are superb also. The story, cut scenes and so on will be very much appreciated by lovers of proper science fiction like Larry Niven's Ringworld. If you've never played this game, it is seriously worth going out and buying an old 2nd hand Xbox!… Expand

    The best game I have ever played (with the exception of CivIII) on a console. I don't give it a 10 because of slow down problems in a couple of places that hindered me esp. in the last stage. Where is the Sequel? Please let there be a sequel, please.

    A triumph. Halo is one of the best games you'll find on the XBox even to this day. While it's not very deep and the later levels feel a tad recylcled, the solid story and action make it a classic and a blast to play.

Done call people who like it "brainwashed" because it is a game with good graphics and the first time around is pretty unbelievable.     With a simple, yet engaging storyline (that is everything true science-fiction should be), interesting characters and settings, and an intense and frantic style of gameplay, Halo: Combat Evolved stands way out (and alone) among other first-person shooters.

    This was a great game. Not as good as the Half-Life series, but stiil very good. Then there was Halo 2 (crap), and Halo 3 couldn't fully recover. Ten years from now, we'll be saying "Remember the time when Halo was good?" 2001 - 2003 FTW!

    a near perfect shooter in its day that felt it raised the bar for FPS games unfortunitly this is the one and only good halo game in the series. the game starts as you waking up from cryo statis as the master chief a cyborg bad ass that can kick some covenent butt . the game has a great selection of guns and one of the few games where i just loved sniping in it. it felt so fluid and justa near perfect shooter in its day that felt it raised the bar for FPS games unfortunitly this is the one and only good halo game in the series. the game starts as you waking up from cryo statis as the master chief a cyborg bad ass that can kick some covenent butt . the game has a great selection of guns and one of the few games where i just loved sniping in it. it felt so fluid and just fun. it also has co op which really makes it a more enjoyable game with a friend . the story is so-so as you feel like you are in the middle of a story with out much informing you on whats been going on overal . the controls are solid and the health shield system i really liked . the real major draw back is there was no multiplayer unless you had a computer and played it on gamespy or xbox connect . if MS had set this game up for multiplayer when xbox live came out or even realsed a patch or a new halo 1.5 game with it i could almost seeing giving this game a 10.… Expand

How can you rate it any less than 9 or 10?. I however am being cruel with a 9 rating perhaps unjustly because I feel a few more tweaks could have improved the game. I would have preferred better sound options, especially to remove background music and to have a little extra differentiation in the feel of the weapons and weapon loading. This game truly is a masterpiece and one of very few retro games I think that deserve this praise. As I replay on heroic level I'm pretty impressed at the design and layout of the levels it is clear the game was overly play tested before release. The game is challenging by well placed design ideas and shows the love the game designers had for this game.… Expand

    I never actually owned this game but I played it from start to finish in one sitting with a friend in coop mode when it came out. Truly a masterpiece and a very compelling reason to own an xbox at the time.

This game has a amazing world around you and kept me interested in the campaign. Multiplayer is good in halo 1 but no online multiplayer and also I didn't like how little weapons there are, but its their first gameHalo CE has a amazing campaign and amazing story witch is the best story and campaign in a halo game.     Halo combat evolved was such a great fps for the xbox. The graphics are top notch, especially for a game that was made in 2000, the campaign is long, compelling, and challenging, the versing and co op is fairly good too, overall, a great buy for xbox gamers

Even after playing through later iterations, I can still say that this game is the best. The game is comprised of very open maps, excellent story elements, great mechanics, and outstanding music. You really can't go wrong with this game.

    Halo: Combat Evolved nearly perfected the first person shooter genre. In fact, it defined the genre. Bungie took everything from all the other classic FPS games like Doom, Quake, and Goldeneye 007 into one tremendous game. With great weapons, multi-player, and fun factor, Halo is the killer app that pretty much sold all Xbox consoles.

    Great game. Amazing atmosphere with a story that makes you want to keep playing more and more.
    The thing that I love the most about the game, and a deal breaker for me was, the fact that you could play the story mode CO-OP.
    That is probably the only real reason that I really got into the game in the first place!

    This is one of the best games I have ever played. Sure it looks a bit dated by today's standards but that's what The Master Chief Collection or Halo Combat Evolved anniversary is for. The story is great and The graphics for the time were great. I have no problems with this game.

    Verdict:
    This game is an awesome first installment to an awesome franchise of awesome games.

    The multiplayer in this game is great as well.

    When I first got halo CE a couple of years back, I didn't really know what to expect, I heard good things about the game, but hadn't seen any gameplay or heard of its lore, after playing the game and completing it, I took a deep breath, I had just experienced one of the best games of the past decade, everything in the game is mind blowing, for a 2001 console launch title, halo still playsWhen I first got halo CE a couple of years back, I didn't really know what to expect, I heard good things about the game, but hadn't seen any gameplay or heard of its lore, after playing the game and completing it, I took a deep breath, I had just experienced one of the best games of the past decade, everything in the game is mind blowing, for a 2001 console launch title, halo still plays like its brand new, the gameplay feels smooth and fluid, the graphics look nothing like anything available on consoles at the time, with rich detail and vibrant colours, a nice breath of fresh air from the grey/brown fps games of the time,although by todays standards the game look a little bit boxy, but hey, it was 2001, story is also pretty damn good as well, with well developed characters, such as the now iconic master chief, and the witty AI cortana, although halo offers many great features including a regenerative shield system, a precursor to regenerative health seen today, and tight, well laid out controls, the level design is a bit lazy, although the outdoor environments are huge and expansive, the indoor environments are very copy and pasted, none of the corridors look distinctive from one another and sometimes you get the feeling that you're backtracking coad everything looks the same, and do I really need to talk about the library? **** that level, but aside from that, halo is a fantastic game that refined the console exclusive fps in a way that goldeneye could only dream of doing, everything from the controls to the gameplay feels like it was hand crafted for the original xbox, and without Halo, we wouldn't have the console exclusive fps games we know and love today, and halo is still leading the charge, halo is definitely worth picking up today, hell, I bought an original xbox just to play it! If buying an original xbox Is not on your list though, its available on pc, the remastered halo anniversary on xbox 360, and via the master chief collection on xbox one… Expand

    I'm not one for FPS games, I hate Battlefield and COD but this game is probably my favorite game so far! I have put hours and hours into this game before I even noticed it... my favorite waste of time so far.

The story is simple but fun and pretty engaging, and even though you never leave Installation 04, it manages to have a huge variety of areas, weapons, and enemies, each of which require different strategies to tackle.     Given that this game came out in 2001, it's aged incredibly well. The controls aren't confusing or hard to grasp. The story is well written and acted.
    It's an all around good game that proved its worth as the flagship product for the XBox. Given that the FPS genre was still relatively untouched on consoles, save for Rare's 'GoldenEye 007' and 'Perfect Dark.' Bungie did an amazing job of not only near perfecting the FPS formula on the console, but also defining the tropes of the genre for years to come. Two weapon limit, using the left trigger to throw grenades. These may be considered common mechanics now, but Halo, for better or for worse, was at the forefront of pushing these mechanics into the genre. Not only is this refinement and improvement on the genre impressive, as mentioned before the FPS genre did not have a strong foothold on the console market. The genre was pretty much confined to the PC (not that they had reason for complaint with games like Half-Life, Counter Strike and the original DOOM). So for Bungie to bring a relatively new genre as it was, to a platform that wasn't familiar with the genre, and a new platform franchise no less, and it was still a success speaks volumes of Bungie's ability in crafting this game.

    Whilst I can speak huge volumes of praise for the game. It is not without it's shortcomings. Whilst it doesn't have too much of an impact on the game. There is a very small amount of weapons available (although there is a nice amount of vehicles). 5 UNSC weapons and 3 Covenant weapons to be exact, and whilst for the most part these weapons are well balanced and implemented into the game. The magnum is so powerful it practically removes the need for any other weapon so long as you're a crack shot. However, those first two issues were more on the knit-picking side, my major issue with this game, and one anyone who is familiar with the game I'm sure will agree with me on. The Library as a level is just a nightmare. On the easy difficulty it's more just an endless and repetitive journey through the same flood infested halls (which also reminds me that for many levels, there was a lot of backtracking, I know it's a frequent problem with older FPS games like the Metroid Prime games but Pillar of Autumn is an excellent example of completely linear level design with practically no elements of backtracking other heading too and then leaving the bridge.) but on legendary, The Library is an absolute nightmare, even with a friend by your side.

    Good story and acting
    Genre defining and innovative beyond it's years
    Occasional good level design mixed with lots of backtracking
    The Library should've been left out
    Short range of weapons to choose from
    Nice variety of vehicles
    The pistol has the power to destroy the Death Star

    I didn't mention the multiplayer as I wasn't familiar with Halo back when it first came out, but playing the Master Chief Collection's version of it was fun if not impossible due to the years of skill many of the players would have under their belt.    … Expand

But when I rate games I consider playing it now more important then how it was when released. And some things have definitely aged in combat evolved. For one the visuals and environments can be blocky and dull to look at some times and some areas are just plain ugly or are very dark. I find the old visuals to be charming flawed but charming but for many today this game can be quiet ugly in general although I will hold up that some areas and levels are quite pretty in their own sense. Of course you can play with the anniversary visuals in that port or in the MCC collection. But those visuals are fairly plain to me and completely bungle the tone and designs of areas and enemy's. I wouldn't recommend the anniversary visuals but I know that for many modern gamers the original look can be very unappealing so that can be a problem for some. One other common complaint and one I share is the level design. Now this is mostly for the last 4 levels the first level is fine the second and fourth levels I think are wonderful and nice to look at the third level is okay and the fifth level has a good tone and atmosphere to it. However the Library or seventh level is probably one of the worst levels in the entire series, It just not fun to play especially on harder difficulties. And the last 3 levels are just levels previously played but different in some ways and because of that it just feels a bit boring. Although the last stretch of the last level is truly a classic as you have to drive through the ship before it explodes. The ships architecture might make no sense if you stop and look around a bit during this segment but it doesn't matter because of how fun it is and how well it caps the game off. That mostly covers any negatives I have other then that it's mostly positives. Gunplay is super solid and really solidified many conventions we have with modern console shooters. While there's not really a large verity of guns in the game all of them are fun to use and have their place within it. The pistol is famous for how overpowered and fun it is. The shotgun might be my favorite in he series just for its long look and how much punch it has . I could go on but my point is that there all good and have wonderful sound affects to go along with them. But what really makes the gameplay so much fun is the AI. Even compared to some modern titles the AI is remarkably intelligent. Enemy's will find cover, try to flank you, charge you if they now your near death and will retreat if a superior is killed. Of course this mostly applies to the covenant as the flood act more like AI in shooters at the time in that they will just charge you and mindlessly shoot. Makes sense considering what they are but in practice not as fun to fight which adds to the later flood levels not being as much fun to play. Anyways what else can I say the music is fantastic and really just iconic and down right beautiful at times. The vehicles are fun to use but also are really wonky in how they feel and the fact they like to drift. Except the tank the tank isn't really fun to use in this game but you never have to use it so there's that I guess. The plot today is a bit simple but there are layers to it and a sense of mystery as well. Who built the rings what are there purpose how and what are the covenant? When it comes to characters there's only like six in the whole game and some are forgettable or don't get to do enough but Master Chief Cortana and Guilty Spark are defiantly memorable characters. Although Chief is a bit of an idiot in this one and Cortana is rocking a bowl cut but other then that I cant really complain. Overall Halo Combat Evolved is a classic it might be a bit rough around the edges but the core gameplay is a blast to play and certainly worth playing today among any fans of shooters.… Expand

But then my friend and I played split screen coop for the first time, we basically played the whole game over a weekend, 8 hours of awesome. The additional one-button actions like throwing a grenade and melee attacks with the simple "swap to other weapon" inventory complete the circle of a shooter where you spend more time devising your tactics while your shield recharges. Vehicles are a fun addition. The story is quite interesting although with some obvious misses. Having Cortana providing tactical support is a welcome addition to the up to that point empty experience of the typical FPS of the era. Combat Evolved is definitely a well earned game.… Expand

It having been a launch title for the original Xbox it holds up pretty well still. I'm really glad they changed Cortana's design in newer games even though I love purple. Easily worth playing through all 10 levels.

    Other strong points include a cinematic-level soundtrack, effective/engaging controls, and occasionally highly unpredictable AI.

    Multi-player outside of co-op was solid, but much better in Halo 2, while the campaign for Halo 2 was less engaging to me story-wise. The weakest point about this game is that it's just not for everyone; I can imagine someone wanting Borderlands or Call of Duty and shunning this, though they probably both got a little bit of their magic from this.

    HALO: Combat Evolved is way ahead of its time, and probably marks its place as the best FPS game ever.
    It's not a perfect game, even if the power of nostalgia blinds me to its few flaws, but it remains as one of the best experiences I've had in gaming.
