A great return for Sunsoft, Ufouria: The Saga 2 opens its place for players of yesteryear who will remember their days with the first title and for all those who want an entry-level experience into the Metroidvania genre. It is not a game that reinvents the wheel or innovates in its design, but it is fun and a little challenging, in its own style it manages to create a solid gaming experience.

While it may be a tad on the expensive side ($31.99 CAD), I quite enjoyed my time with it alongside Hebe and friends exploring their world, certainly memorable for its unique design and colorfulness. Ufouria: The Saga 2 is a sequel that I don’t think anyone asked for, or saw coming, but I’m all for it given how adorable is all is. It’s a small and quirky game that’s certainly on the easy and casual side, but sometimes a game like that is a welcome change.

Ufouria 2’s only drawback is that it is possibly too simple. The game rarely presented a challenge and death was rarely an issue. The mechanics are also barren with only a few things to see and do, and the loop becomes repetitive relatively quickly. Still the music, visuals, and simple charm of the game carry it to completion. This is a game that I adore because of nostalgia, but I think even people unfamiliar with the developer will find plenty to love. The game just oozes that ‘video game’ charm we fell in love with back in the NES days, something that is sorely lacking in a lot of modern titles.

Ufouria: The Saga 2 is a fun and amusing side-scrolling platform title. This wonderfully wholesome title will make you smile from beginning to end. However, it is far too easy and short. Accordingly, you will be left wanting. Yet, the short experience is captivating and brilliant.

Damning Ufouria: The Saga 2 with faint praise, but this is a sturdy, enjoyable and accessible platformer. It’s almost impossible to dislike thanks to its gorgeous feltworks world, and it’s equally impossible to fall foul of its difficulty levels.

For many gamers, Ufouria: The Saga 2 is an opportunity to discover this friendly world, imagined and designed three decades ago. There are many additions to the original title, thus breathing new life into the licence. However, the length of the adventure and the ease with which it can be completed are likely to disappoint a good number of players, especially long-time fans. All in all, it’s an episode with mixed feelings that probably won’t leave its mark on today’s videogame landscape.
