The way Todd Howard was talking, Starfield seemed like it would be a large departure for Bethesda. Turns out it's just fallout in space, but with none of the features that make that IP charming. I downloaded this for Series X and bought the premium for 30 bucks. This game has been so misleading by Bethesda. I was incredibly bored. I played a few side quests, main quests, got into a few ship fights as well as gun engagements. Looked for stuff on a few planets. It’s full of nothing interesting. After loading into every scene as well as not being able to travel seamlessly I was taken a back how underwhelming it all was. If people enjoy this right on but I just could not get into this at all. Loved all of the Elderscrolls games and Fallout 3 and New Vegas. This was a step back in terms of interesting. Expand

All these compromises down to an prehistoric engine or a lack of technical no how.

Reviewers are saying you can't compare it to Cyberpunk, Dying Light 2, GTA5 as Starfield has so many systems. Well I'm calling BS. All those games have huge cities that now run at 60fps, look way better, feel better and have far far fewer loading screens. And the supposed multitude of systems that give Starfield a pass?.... a bunch of Mass Effect 1 procedurally generated planets with repetitive linear bases, caves etc. And space exploration via fast travel. Yes It's playable, but set your expectations to something similar but slightly worse than Fallout 4 (as its 30fps), with convoluted systems, and half baked exploration and planets

It has possibilities, I imagine with six to twelve months of patches and quality of life improvements it will be a reasonable game. But at the moment it is dull. But at the moment it is dull. And certain things don't make much sense. Like in the future we lost the ability to utilise any maps within civilisation centres that tell us where vendors are located etc. The spaceship is nothing but an extended inventory, you don't really fly it ... you just move it from point A to point B on a starmap. There is the illusion of flying, by moving it around the atmosphere of a planet, with a smattering of chanky space combat.

Where the game struggles I think is lore ... I have no feeling for it at all. Elder Scrolls/Fallout they crafted a world. Starfield - I don't get any world building sense. Yeah there are things that mark it as a Bethesda game, turrets, consoles, lock picking, inventory management, perks, bugs etc. But I don't care about the lore - everything is so generic. My initial feeling was it played like just any other space game, a lot of other space games have done it a lot better.

Generally just don't believe the hype with this one, it is boring. There is no 'wow' factor to the game, that blows your socks off. It is just grind and while grind in itself is not too bad if you have a captivating story or interesting characters, this game lacks on both scores.

Overall has some potential, imagine once PC modders get into it and start showing Bethesda what is actually possible. Then Bethesda take those ideas and filter them into the game over time. Starfield will end up a reasonable game. But at the minute it is seriously lacking something, and all I can think is there isn't much lore or anything.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I will update if the game ever gets good I have enjoyed absolutely nothing so far I’m only a very slow 11 hours in. Controls super clunky, shooting very inconsistent, planets are a joke not real planets literally only a few things to do, I hate the scanning you have to be super close to scan and there’s almost nothing to scan, not like No Man’s Sky where you can scan EVERYTHING. Very very boring I’m trying to push through cause people say it gets better but this is a snooze fest so far I’m at Mars constellation mission. I’m trying to enjoy it but it’s definitely super weird and other games do everything better just haven’t had any fun yet. Expand

If you have never played Fallout 4 or a Bethesda Game Studios game then I would recommend Starfield for sure, and likely give it a 7 or 8. Game lacks any real vision. Feels very bland and uninspired. Does nothing to change the formula up. Space exploration is boring and tedious, gun play is acceptable, graphics are quite dated for a 2023 game.
Its by no means a bad game, it just isnt a good one. It might be time to look at updating the creation engine Bethesda.
    Very disappointed.

The skill tree is bland, with standard physics and human behavoir that have to be learned AGAIN?
Like the "ability" not to bee heard/seen everywhere, far away, behind walls and obstacles by all enemies? Why can you not just run and hide like a normal human being? Not to mention all those lame characters that talks and talks about so insanely much the same pov monotone way. Again. The combat is ok enough, but a solid step down from Skyrim and Fallout 4.
    Nothing new.

The technical sci-fi aspect is awesome, but I will rather play Cyberpunk that shows more creativity and atleast some humor, that Starfield really lacks...

Starfield was a huge disappointment for me. While playing this game, I felt like I was going back 20 years because the mechanics used are so obsolete. I could also talk about the stupid AI, the poverty of exploration (which is mainly done through menus and teleports) and the numerous bugs.

It is only running at 30 fps.
This is the first game with 30 fps that causes me dizziness and nausea.

Something about empty procedurally generated worlds just doesn't excite me and the lack of vehicles sucks. The space exploration is mostly just combat It's all fast travel and cutscenes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: Ship customizations, some ability and weapons customizations, Decent graphics, 3rd person view is good, minimal bugs

    Cons:
-Story takes long to catch up and nothing memorable for a AAA title.
-Graphics are not at the level of a AAA current gen title honestly. Some models look good but facial expressions, hair, vegetation, and others look 100% last gen. Its really a last gen game. Must be an old game engine that hasn't been updated enough to use modern techniques and hardware.
-Because of last point, the loading times suck on the Series X. They're not taking advantage of the disk throughput of the system.
-In light of last point, Space travel is immersion breaking and not memorable for a AAA currrent gen title. You load into a spaceship, to travel, have to fast travel basically to get into a planet and load into a planet. Its really immersion breaking.
    -Planets are essentially empty spaces.

In summary; they could have made a better game if they focused on creating a few planets(8) that you can actually fly to in real time. Invested more in the story, and updating their game engine to utilize new streaming methods for loading data, amongst other things.

It is true that you'll find a good number of barren wastelands with little to do other than extracting some resources and take off to more interesting places, but again it really depends on how you want to play. There's so much to do, so many systems and abilities to explore, missions to complete, spaceships to loot, and species to catalogue, that I honestly don't think there's anybody who thinks that exploring every square meter of this universe is the better way to enjoy Starfield.

While it has weak spots and doesn’t push many boundaries, Starfield is still an excellent RPG experience. Bethesda has once again mastered the things it built its reputation on – world building, quest design, and deep customization. However, it’s found new things to excel at too, with exciting combat and a novel implementation of New Game Plus.
