Star Wars Outlaws is a rollercoaster of a game that I loved and hated in different ways. I could be having the time of my life one minute, and the next be frustrated and want to turn it off. It feels like a game that with some tweaks, could be a classic. I think after a while it will iron out and be remembered as a truly fun and great game. As of now it has a lot of issues out of the box, and its inconsistency makes it harder to recommend outside the most hardcore of Star Wars fans.

Star Wars Outlaws is an exceedingly fun Star Wars game that's hindered by poor stealth systems and lacklustre mission design. Massive Entertainment establishes an incredible sense of place through its open worlds, accurately capturing the look and feel of the original trilogy of movies, but the experience falters the closer you stick to the critical path. If you've ever dreamed of becoming a scoundrel in a galaxy far, far away then you'll find a lot to like in Outlaws, and a lot more crawling through cramped ventilation systems than expected.
  3. I’ve been a die-hard Star Wars guy for decades, so I’m always happy to get a new movie, book, or game. I just wish this one turned out a tad better.

If space travel was removed from Star Wars Outlaws, the game would be stripped down to elements that were already considered obsolete seven years ago. The well-crafted Star Wars atmosphere does not make up for the painfully simple gameplay, and the main character lacks the adventurous charisma that would engage players in the story. Such a combination resulted in a mediocre title, distinguished by only a few original ideas for open-world fun.

A streamlined and multi-planet take on Ubisoft's familiar open-world action, paired with an original-trilogy-era Star Wars tale that follows an up-and-coming scoundrel rather than a Jedi or Imperial, sounds like a recipe for an absolutely incredible game. Outlaws, though, is uneven. Some of the settings, exploration, heists and adventures are everything a franchise fan could want in a sandbox scum and villainy game. Unfortunately, a lot of rough edges and a severe lack of storytelling depth holds Outlaws back from its true potential.

There are so many little moments in Outlaws that I love. However, the unexciting space combat and unrewarding syndicate-relationship tracker don't add anything meaningful to the experience. And neither does Kay, who feels like a protagonist without a meaty narrative arc. The game has some successes when it comes to gunslinging or sneaking--both of which are aided by a superb soundtrack and incredible sound design--but Outlaws does too much of what it does poorly, and too little of what it does well.

With a charismatic and charming cast, incredible ambience and one of the best companions in recent memory to compensate for its dated design and truly barren open worlds, Star Wars Outlaws is more than the sum of its parts.

Outlaws doesn't quite fit the role it was supposedly created for. Had the developer fully ironed out all the gameplay kinks and filled the environments with interesting things to do, it may have been able to go toe-to-toe with Jedi Survivor. Instead, it leaves behind little more than a few fond memories.

Star Wars Outlaws admirably attempts to simulate the sly space scoundrel life, but it quickly gets lost in a galaxy of frustratingly outdated gameplay and uninspired open-world bloat.

Although Star Wars Outlaws is a game that can have some points to improve, it is the sum of the parts and the bet for wanting to do something relatively different with the open world genre that forces to value it positively. Its adaptation of the underworld of the franchise created by George Lucas is practically unbeatable, and artistically it is a great triumph for Star Wars fans. [Recommended]

Yes, the story of putting together a crew to pull off a heist is great. And yeah, working with and against criminal gangs led by people like Jabba is fun. And I love ND-5 and Nix, too! But what I appreciate the most about Star Wars Outlaws is that finally, after all these years of watching the movies, I can step into the Star Wars universe and just exist in it.

STAR WARS Outlaws is the dream 3rd-person open world title so many of us wanted. It’s big, and fun, and while it has some flaws I have greatly enjoyed my time with it. A massive progression blocking soft-lock is a bit of a bummer and instead of this being a final score it’s going to be a review-in-progress one as I wait to see the rest of the title once it’s fixed. Star Wars Outlaws proposes a captivating adventure that immerses players in the rich and complex intricacies of the galactic underworld, whilst bringing a breath of fresh air to Ubisoft's familiar open-world formula. Despite some significant shortcomings in the combat and space exploration phases, the experience remains highly engaging thanks to a convincing narrative, a varied open world and (finally) natural, organic exploration, as well as well-developed characters. Nonetheless, technical problems on Xbox Series X tarnish an otherwise promising proposal. All in all, Star Wars Outlaws manages to captivate, but fails to fully realise the potential that its concept and universe can allow.
