    It was the most high-five game I've ever played. It has pretty good level designs and boss fights. The music was incredible. The action was 10/10. I played this game with my cousin. We had fun just like when we were kids. It was quite a great experience. Please make more good games like this. Love you guys! You are the BEST!

    Played this with the wife. An insane kitchen sink of game mechanics and differentiation - it's just one new thing after the next, to a fault. Everything is GOOD, but nothing is super great. We're close to the end, but not quite done yet. Who's idea was it to make the characters total freakin' wankers that we both can't stand? As I told the wife, this game only has one good ending to me, and I'm not going to get it - a horrible death to both parents. We're surely going to get the ramshackle, "we're determined to make this work for our dumb kid" ending - BIG MISTAKE, based on people I know that grew up with parents that did similar things.… Expand

    Beautiful game for two. One of the best mechanics ever that amaze me with every level. There's so many moments from this game that I would like to be expanded, but then ended and gave me a desire for more. Must play!

    Played this with my girlfriend. Probably the most effort I’ve seen a game go into level designs just to sprint through them in 10 seconds. Definitely a very simple game for casual gamers which I understand due to its nature. This game is basically a single play through, almost like watching a movie play out. Short and sweet.

    One of the best cooperative gaming experiences of my life. My wife, who is not a gamer, at all, actually played this with me and had so much fun! After nearly 15 years of marriage this game just might turn her into a gamer. A masterpiece of a game!

    Played this game every night for like two weeks with my wife, and she loved the **** out of it. It was a lot of fun, and I love couch coop games for the way they get my wife to take part in my favorite hobby with me.

I don't really know who is this game made for - because I'm pretty sure it's not for kids due to some rather unsettling scenes (killing plushies that beg for their life, for instance). The writing and the story itself is far to weak to make adults feel involved. The talking love book spills only sentences that are so banal and cliché that there's no way that this can be convincing, even for a couple that is ignorant, selfish and crippled emotionally, like our Cody and May.
    My biggest complaint to the story is the fact that it teaches kids that they are or can be responsible for fixing their parents marriage. This is a harmful psychological process called parentification and it should not be presented in a positive way ("and they lived happily ever after").
    Graphics and music are quite pleasant to the eye and ear and that's why I rated this game so high.    … Expand

And this game is a co-op adventure of theAs soon as I saw the trailer for "It Takes Two" by "Hazelight Studios", I immediately knew - this is going to be a co-op masterpiece, and I will play it with my wife! And so it happened. Adventure games have always been in demand in the gaming market, but there has always been an acute shortage of cooperative games, especially in recent years. And this game is a co-op adventure of the highest level!

    Perhaps the only downside to this game is the script. And all the dialogue in the game + some of the scenes that follow from that. I haven't listened to such incompetent dialogue in a long time. Moreover, 90% of the cutscenes consist of chatter about nothing, with dull and boring characters with far-fetched problems.

    But other than that, the game is great. Excellent cooperative gameplay, where each of the two players has a unique role (there is replay value), a lot of mini-games, each level gives new game mechanics, something is constantly changing in the game, while there is always time for fierce battles, and for puzzle solutions for both platforming and crazy rollercoaster rides!     This might be the best coop experience I've ever had. every single level has so much detail can charisma. i can see this game was definitely created with passion. This was brought by the same guy who created A Way Out and now i am a fan of his. cant wait to see whats next on his amazing crazy mind.

One may look at It Takes Two and wonder why it won Game of the Year in 2021 and beat out games like Resident Evil Village, Deathloop, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Metroid Dread. Is it really as good as they say? Well, yes in regards to its quality, but I wouldn't say it was Game of the Year.

    I love co-op games, and there's not a ton nowadays. It Takes Two was a breath of fresh air and delivered one of the most fun local co-op experiences I've had in a while. It is co-op only, so be sure you have someone dedicated to play the entire game with you, either local or online. It is a game that will test your synergy working together, cause you will definitely need it.

    The story is simple enough, a couple on the verge of divorce and their young daughter caught in the middle of it, which is ironically one of the best scenarios for a co-op game and it took advantage of this kind of situation rather well in terms of the gameplay. Both Cody and May will be able to use different abilities throughout the game and you need to rely on each other to overcomes obstacles. While the story is touching, there are a few parts where the characters are actually kind of dumb and don't think things through until it's too late, which is a bit annoying. The book is also really annoying too, but he does do a good job at getting Cody and May angry at the same thing, at least, so I guess there's that.

    For a game that just looks like a 3D platformer on the surface, it has a ton of varied gameplay! The game has parts where it turns into a fighting game, a dungeon crawler, a flying game, and many others to keep the experience fresh and new. All the while exploring some beautifully designed levels based around things around the house. Being shrunk down into dolls and throwing in some magic into the mix made for some really fun, unique, and interesting set pieces. Never a dull moment in the game.

    It's fun and easy to play, and makes for a really good bonding activity with a friend, loved one, or anyone really. it's one of the best co-op games I've played. I do think there were better games that came out in 2021, but I am happy this game was recognized for being the fun title. You'll find a lot of enjoyment in it!    … Expand

Unlike other multiplayer games where two participants compete and endeavour to reach the level first, “It Takes Two” requires both players’ actions in order to solve puzzles, hence, progressing within the story. This is the greatest attribute as it absorbs both players, maintaining mutual engagement.

    Finally, I must recognize the book, Dr. Hakim. Every time this character appeared, he always made us smile and laugh. His identity is unique and was presented in a humorous manner. He is one of the key characters; he is precisely this little addition that converted “It Takes Two” into a significantly memorable experience.    … Expand

She loved to explore, the game was beautiful, a few color vibrant parts left her with a headache and in some places I had to do her part too. It wasn't hard, but she doesn't have much experience. The power ideas were pretty good, we laughed hard on some randomly got achievements (Look at him go for example got us by surprise) and I liked being Yondu :D… Expand

My wife is insufferably terrible at this, and I would literally need to wait a half hour for her to figure out what to do. There needs to be an easy mode or handy cap for casual players.     My girlfriend really doesn't like any video games besides the occasional animal crossings or Mario karts. Me and her played this game and I've never seen her so hooked and wanting to continue playing to the next level and story chapter. It was a tough game in a sense that she isn't use to playing games like this co-op, but it was overall very fun. Without a doubt this game deserves all of the praise it was given as the developer clearly made this game with a lot of love and passion and it really shows in this charming masterpiece.

    Exclusively a 2 player game, a husband and wife are turned into dolls and have to explore the world in a Toy Story like style fighting army squirrels and sentient toys along the way. The story can make you laugh and tear up so easily as you quickly become invested in its fantastic narrative. Different mini games or even just fun extra things to do are around every corner making the game just as fun to explore as it is to play. They find a way to mix so many genres into one including fighting, racing, and even dungeon crawling as a few of the many examples. This sense of adventure always brought me back with excitement to see what happens next, or what world I may explore. A garden? A toy castle? Even a snow globe?! I was always charmed and thrilled to see where this journey took me next.

    Honestly I cannot recommend this game enough. If you have a friend or loved one you can play alongside this game will give you hours upon hours of entertainment. And if you don’t have such a person, consider buying a copy for a friend and play it online with them. It’s a worthwhile investment and one I promise you won’t regret making. Once again, this game fully deserved its Game of the Year award, and I’m happy it won it.    … Expand

    This game was so much fun! I played through it with my fiance and had a blast. The gameplay was so much fun, and the different abilities for each different level was an awesome change of pace to keep it just interesting enough to keep my attention. Level and character design was PHENOMONAL. As far as the story, I can't help but wish it was written better. The dialogue with Rose inThis game was so much fun!     There are not many Co-Op games out there and even less good Co-Op games. But this one is definitely one of the few. There are many different levels, nice story, nice minigames and good action.

    I'm not the biggest fan of platformers and definitely not a into games that require you to play with others in order to experience it, but It Takes Two became a high exception.

    This game screams creativity and charm, excelling expectations when it comes to gameplay and variety! It's incredible!     Every level throws something surprising at you and it hardly ever makes it repetitive. Each new mechanic is simple to master, clever in its co-op execution and perfected by very well done level designs. You never know what to expect and once you discover something different, it always manages to feel fresh and imaginative.
    Technically, It Takes Two is wonderful. Not only it plays great, with comfortable and responsive platforming controls, but it also looks beautiful. It's definitely not "net-gen-graphics", but it delighted me with nice textures, beautiful environments, good-looking monsters/characters models and high levels of charm.

    As for the story, it's fine. It's not GREAT and most of the times it sounds quite silly, but it's sweet enough to keep you curious to see the end. I also love how the tale's pace transforms it into many other types of genres. For example, there's a boss fight mimicking Street Fighter and a Diablo-like level. Even the mini-games and the way you compete with your co-op partner ties into May and Cody's ordeal.

    But I have to say that the writing could have been a lot better. It's fine, but it's just not remarkable and I blame the way it was told. I also felt like the game tried too hard to be funny and just failed. That annoying Book of Love, for example, is horrible. The worst thing about him is that he is crucial to the story and you're tied to him.
    The ending is also quite hollow, in my opinion. It left me wanting more.
    Which is weird to say, because around the final two levels I felt like It Takes Two started to drag a little. Don't get me wrong, the fun-factor and entertaining mechanics were still there, but it started to get a little bit stale. And maybe one of the main reasons for that is the boss fights. Very few of them are actually cool. They are very gimmicky, lack any type of challenge and only end up breaking the pacing of the game's fantastic level design.

    And one last thing that may come off as negative is the fact that you NEED to play this game with somebody. And not just anybody, you need to communicate and work well together to reach the ending. And I know that It Takes Two's entire foundation is built around playing co-op - that's alright - but it sucks to know that many people won't play this game as it should be experienced or may never even touch it.

    I didn't think I'd get to have time to finish any other game in 2021, but I'm happy that I finished It Takes Two. It was without a doubt one of the greatest co-op experiences I've ever had and definitely one of the smartest platformers I've ever played.

    Story - The story is quite simple, it is about a married couple named May and Cody who have fallen out of love and are organizing their divorce, this takes quite a toll on their young daughter - Rose who wishes for them to stop fighting and becoming close again, due to this wish, both May and Cody are transferred into the dolls that Rose made of them, and they are now on a journey to rebuild their broken marriage. My partner and I had a lot of fun with this, even though its predictable, seeing both May and Cody work together, starting as quite cruel to one another and gradually learning to care for each other again was really nice.

    Gameplay - This is a platforming game for the most part with co-op, but I have never seen a more diverse game in my life. There are 7 chapters overall, and the variety of gameplay elements here is truly outstanding, you will go from your usual platforming to riding Frogs, to controlling a flying machine made of underpants, to flying around in jetpacks fighting to steal keys from devil-like bat creatures, it is endless. I honestly stopped and looked at my partner very often and just said "This game is incredible, there are so many new things they keep throwing at you". Each chapter also gives May and Cody different items/weapons to use to help each other out throughout the game which just adds so much more to it.

    Cooperation - This is very much a cooperative game so if you don't have someone to play with whether it be locally or with a friend online, then you will not be able to play this game as it is strictly cooperative, this may be a barrier for certain people and that is a shame, that is probably my only negative but for this game to be as great as it is, it needs to be strictly a cooperative game, it is very much designed with this in mind and having a single player option would not provide the experience that is intended and might even sour the co-op experience if single player is being accounted for in the gameplay as well. I will say that there are a variety of gameplay elements here to that keep things fresh, neither my partner nor I ever felt like we were more in control of a situation when compared to the other, and we both felt like we had our parts to play to progress and help each other, it is so well designed and I cannot credit this amazing development team enough, they knocked this out of the park completely. My girlfriend and I would regularly clear a section and give each other a high 5 to celebrate, it really brought us a lot of joy.

    Difficulty - Now for me personally, the difficulty is fine but if you are like me and you have a partner or a person you are playing with that isn't super big on games, or is a casual gamer then there may be moments of struggle here, there are a lot of fun changes in gameplay that will require both of the players to be ready to change it up. Luckily for me, my partner handled everything mostly fine, there was one section where I had to grab the controller from her, but otherwise, aside from occasional moments to pause and explain, she was fine when playing. The game is not hard, but if you are playing with someone who doesn't play games often then you will need to be patient and assist them from time to time.

    Graphics & Level Design - All of the levels are so well made, May and Cody are dolls so everything is on a big scale compared to them, you get a nice balance of levels that look like something you'd recognize in a real life, but there are changes made to make it more like out of a kid's imagination and fantasy which works very well and makes the levels memorable. On Series X, the game is absolutely gorgeous and I just had to stop and stare multiple times, as did my partner.

    Competitive - There are mini games throughout each chapter that you can find and play with the 2nd player, these are competitive games so if you both want to take a break from working together and put your skills to the test against each other than this game has you back, like the levels, all the mini games are very different and there are 25 to find, of course my partner and I had to find them all.

    Final Rating - There is more I wish I could say about the game but the character limit.. Just know that there is a very good reason why It Takes Two made Game of the Year in the VGAs for 2021 and it should be enjoyed by more people. Of course without a 2nd player, this may be tough for you to do so, but if you can find someone, whether it be a partner, friend, or family member, then definitely do so, you won't regret the time spent with May and Cody.    … Expand

    It Takes Two has an easy claim to the title of best co-op game on the market. With top tier, ever-changing mechanics, and visuals on par with any modern gaming great, this is a must play for platforming fans. Narratively, It Takes Two features a simple, heartfelt story with occasionally cringy dialogue holding the game back from perfection. Well deserving of 2021’s GOTY.

    It was the best two-person co-op game I've ever played. There were some gimmicks I've seen somewhere, but I think it's a game that collected only their strengths. The playtime was longer than I thought, and I had a lot of fun with my friend by swearing, laughing, and chatting with each other.

El multijugador local es un elemento algo olvidado, retomado por Gears 5 como gran excepción y por Nintendo de forma recurrente aunque sólo para party games; sin embargo, el juego nos invita a retomar esa costumbre de reír, rabiar, y sobre todo coordinarnos con un otro que está justo a nuestro lado. El juego se puede jugar en línea con otro, pero se nota que la experiencia está pensada para conversar los puzzles y distintos jefes en pareja y en un mismo espacio.
    En términos jugables intenta mezclar distintos tipos de juegos, tributando a gran parte de la historia del videojuego, pero su estilo es un claro plataformas de puzzles en 3D, con gran influencia estética de franquicias como Toy Story. La sensación de recorrer los distintos rincones del hogar, de forma surrealista, harán que en más de alguna ocasión pidamos de vuelta un buen juego basado en la franquicia de Pixar. Pero como decía antes, si bien mezcla muchos estilos, tributando, y sin destacar en términos de excelencia, su jugabilidad general sigue estando anclada en el plataformeo 3D; un género que con el paso del tiempo se fue apagando, y está viviendo una nueva era gracias a entregas como el último Ratched and Clank o Psychonauts 2. Sin embargo, el elemento que hace destacar a este juego, y situarlo como claro candidato a GOTY 2021, es su narrativa: la cuál se mezcla con un gameplay cooperativo. La historia es simple y cliché, pero logras conectar con los protagonistas y sus problemas reales; te sientes parte, y si juegas con tu pareja es una excelente forma de enfrentar las diferencias y los conflictos. Este fue mi caso, y la experiencia fue fenomenal. Es un juego recomendado incluso para jugadores no expertos, pues el desarrollo del mismo nos obliga a esperar al otro jugador con tal de que ambos puedas resolver de forma cooperativa el desafío que se les presenta.    … Expand

    It's fun, playable for the youngest, the story is nice, the gameplay is renewed so frequently, it's incredible how this game is generous!

    El juego es una obra maestra, excelente en muchos aspectos. De una duración adecuada, lleno de lugares muy lindos y muchos minijuegos. Muchas mecánicas entretenidas. Se lo recomiendo a todo el mundo. Especialmente por que debes jugar con alguien más.

    Все эти плюсы перечёркиваются омерзительным сюжетом. С самого начала к родителям девочки не испытываешь сочувствия. Шутки раздражают. Их поведение вряд ли можно назвать адекватным по отношению к своей дочери. Но на всё это не обращали внимания благодаря увлекательному геймплею. Но глава с замком, особенно её концовка, отбили любое желание продолжать игру. Мы с женой с отвращением убрали геймпады в сторону, удалили игру. Считаю игру аморальной, идеологически вредной, не вызывающей ничего, кроме чувства отвращения. Тот случай, когда "сюжет" убил всё хорошее, а хорошего было много. Надеюсь, Фарес сохранит положительные моменты игры и найдёт нормального сценариста.    … Expand

    If you like to play with a friend, you cannot avoid this game. Sure, graphically it might not be aimed at someone who normally plays Warzone, but it's a very nice change. The playful atmosphere and funny story improves the gamers evening, and the puzzles and parkours make you brood and have fun. For me the best game of this year so far!

I've probably only written one or two reviews over the many years of hanging out on Metacritic but my wife and i have had so much fun playing this game together that i needed to say something about how excellent this game is. The only small downside for me were some questionable decisions by the two main characters, bringing your daughter to tears (not of joy) should never be a parents intention.     It Takes Two is the magnum opus not only of Hazelight Studios but of co-op experiences in general. It’s one of those extremely rare games that it’s almost impossible to find a fault to any of its elements, be it the longevity, gameplay, art direction, music, boss fights, environmental puzzles, innovation etc. A truly flawless experience.
