Along with the Arkham games, in my opinion, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle are destined to be feverishly pointed at for decades as an example of how to do video game adaptations right.

Let's be honest, we were pretty freaked out by the result obtained with Indiana Jones and the Circle of the Ancients, especially after the latest gameplay videos that were released. The issues identified with the AI and the stiff animations are there, but they manage to be hidden by the rest of the game, which are actually the heart of this adventure. Exploration, puzzles, story, narration, characters, atmosphere and even the fights somewhere, all of this takes over to offer us a gripping, captivating adventure that perfectly transcribes the Indy of the 80s. Even the view in the first video that was much criticized works well and it's a real pleasure to have gone through these 32 hours of play in the leather jacket of our coolest archaeologist on the planet. The game also shines with its technical aspect, with very rich graphics and a total change of scenery! We loved our adventure despite its flaws and we hope that a sequel will come to correct and strengthen a license that can try to do as well as Uncharted and Tomb Raider.

This is fan service of the most sophisticated kind: when that trumpet swells, your heart swells with it.

While the regions we visit are sublime, they're sometimes too vast for very little, and there's far too much filler in the way of collectibles. Indy may no longer be Nathan Drake, but he's not an old man either, and he's clearly not at his best in platforming or combat. Even the game's exploration drags on in a way that's hard to in 2024. The same goes for the lack of naturalness and life in the crowded, inhabited areas, and the completely out-of-date AI that breaks up the infiltration. Notable glitches, to say the least, in stark contrast to everything else. The fact remains that Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circle is one of the best Xbox exclusives of recent years, a fresh and gripping adventure that fans would be foolish to overlook for the few glitches that will quickly be swept under the carpet, and rightly so.

The city is so exquisitely designed, in fact, that it overshadows the rest of the game. Which is remarkable when your next destination is the Pyramids of Giza. Here The Great Circle shifts into a more traditional open-world mode, less intricate and holistic, with more siloed locations and objectives. That said, it does afford greater room to experiment with Indy’s abilities.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle brings a level of authenticity you almost never see for videogames based on movies, even among the good ones...There are many things I can moan about, from the sometimes trivial challenge to the backtracking to the terrible UI, yet there are plenty of things I can praise in turn. The delightful impact of delivering blunt force trauma to a Nazi, the dense use of space, the sincerity of the atmosphere, and that amazing Harrison Ford impression. Sure, it’s marred by many little issues, but The Great Circle's a good bit of adventuring fun in the face of them.

The new Indiana Jones is a game that would rock my world in 2014. Today it’s a game that struggles technologically (Uncharted 4 looks better) and gameplay-wise, with some additional issues. Still, I can’t help but like this game. I see all the flaws (some were really irritating), but I liked the puzzles, the protagonist and some very cool scenes. I had a lot of fun, and my main issue – regarding the immersion-breaking AI – is very personal.

Ultimately, it feels as though Indy is having something of an identity crisis. On the one hand, the freedom and agency offered in the latter two-thirds of the world design and free-flowing combat embraces the character in a way that previous digital incarnations haven’t. On the other, stilted puzzle design and a stubborn resistance to its own structure, particularly in the early stages, holds Indiana Jones and the Great Circle back from true greatness.
