Bye Sweet Carole will transport you to a different time and place, one that is like sinking into a warm bath; familiar yet new, with its solid storytelling and beautiful, nostalgic animation.

Here we are again, an absolute gorgeous game taken down a point or two by gameplay. If not for the bugs I encountered and the slowness that the game just seemed to me, this game could have been great. That said, I can realize when a game isn’t meant for me and ultimately, I don’t think this is a game I’d go in for myself after really thinking about it. But with visuals and audio like this, at least the ride was nice to look at it. I’d welcome a sequel even if we can just do without the sneaky, hide and seek bits.

Bringing a “Disney Princess” art style to a horror-inspired game is certainly an intriguing idea, and Bye Sweet Carole almost pulls it off thanks to its convincing aesthetic and well-written mystery. However, its puzzles are often overly simplistic and seem to be included mainly to extend the longevity of the game artificially, while the character controls aren’t as smooth as they could be.

Bye Sweet Carole is a game that you should come to solely for the story and the wonderful art direction. It's a fascinating idea with great potential, but the execution of this title and how it's fundamentally structured as a video game could be benefitted by a return to the chalk board.
