I have played around 4,000 hours of battlefield games and around 30 hours with 2042 with early access. I have spent a fair share of my gaming career in these first-person shooters. I have spent a fair share of my gaming career in these first-person shooters. That being said, I have never, ever seen such a bad game from a technical perspective on launch (Aside from Fallout 76). It's bad guys. Don't get me wrong, when everything works it's a blast but the number of bugs and issues I run into every single game... It's comical.

List of bugs I've experienced in my 40 hours so far with this game.

1.) Your loadout screen wipes and you default to a DMR and you are unable to pick your loadouts. (You can circumvent this by going into the customize screen in the pause menu "Create new Loadout" and you will then be able to play with your new loadout. but this still requires you to redo all your loadout options. (This happens about 8/10 games I've played)
2.) Breakthrough will simply not let me in. If I launch into the lobby, It will put me in a game but it will not allow me to spawn at all. You are literally stuck on the map. I tried 10 games, I tried resetting my system, I even tried joining friends. All the same result, unable to play.
3.) Weapon blooming/bullet spread is laughable. I have 8 clips of different circumstances where I got the flank on about 3 enemies, laid an entire clip into them, and nothing. Easily they turned and shot me and won the gunfight. Mind you, im not the best battlefield player but I KNOW when I should be landing my shots. The spread is insane for ARs DO NOT USE THEM. You will lose the majority of your gunfights.
4.) Anti-air rocket. Taking down helis is a favorite time of mine in this franchise. There are games where all I'll do is take out helis and jets. The amount of glitchy rocket launching I've had is insane. If you fire the rocket too quickly and instantly click the reload button, the "RELOAD" notice on your screen will NOT go away.
5.) XP and Rewards. There were matches, 45-minute matches, 60 kill games where I received ZERO XP or kill counts to my weapons. Waste of time.
6.) Weapon attachments. They either disappear or don't actually do anything statistically for recoil patterns or stability. Sometimes. I'd say this Happened about 4/10 games I played.
7.) The UI is quite possibly the WORST UI I have ever seen in a video game. How the HELL did this get past QA. What director in his right mind thought "MAN THIS IS A GREAT UI." **** man. Its terrible.

There are more minor issues I've found but none compare to the frustration of these above. Please don't buy this game yet. You'll spend upwards of $70-140 for this game that literally doesn't work OR look as good as it did in the advertisements.

I'm always finding myself on the hype train for Battlefield games. Because **** man, I love... loved this franchise. This game has incredible potential. The specialists, as much as I was skeptical, I REALLY enjoy them. (Unpopular opinion) Having different playstyles around what you want to do has been a WELCOME addition.

Save yourself the frustration and wait until you see the community take to the improvements the devs need to make. We are angry.

If you're new to the franchise or a casual COD player coming over to check it out, welcome to the fam. I hope you will one day see why we love this franchise so much, but right now, you won't. I hate that for you. Some of my favorite experiences in gaming have happened from a battlefield match. I hope this helps some of you. Here's to a better Battlefield future. The only thing we can do is hound the devs to the bugs and issues we are experiencing. But given DICE's previous history, I really do not see all of these gettings fixed till 3-6 months out. It's a shame. Keep your eyes up, guys.

Such a poor understanding of why people like the battlefield franchise. The bugs and glitches we can live with and assume will improve. However the specialist classes… well ya Gotta keep it simple cause human nature is not going to naturally organize into synergistic teams.

This is without a doubt the most untested software ever released, nothing makes sense in this game; control points on maps, maps themselves, specialists, weapon attachments are pointless, vehicles, literally everything is bad and half the things feel like an afterthought last minute additions. Lack of imagination and qa in this game sadly is a reflection of current AAA market. Funnily enough my last two preorders were anthem and this, both EA titles - needless to say I'm done with EA for life. Won’t recommend buying this game before it’s finished, there is no scoreboard, barely any guns, the maps are designed for vehicles, option to only play with console players is missing, no way to make a new squad. The list goes on and on, just awful

The lack of basic functionality in this game is absolutely mind boggling.

Personally I'm hoping the Day One installs the basic building blocks of an FPS title & they can start development of the game, the lack of leaderboard & stats is utterly bewildering every match I have absolutely no clue how well I did other than a "Kills & Assists" figure followed by an EXP read out before I'm parped back to the lobby to go again, but its hard to Ignore when the game highlights the top few players are typically PC players with 100-200 "Assists".

On that note, to get out of this PC domination the Cross play toggle is greyed out and instead you're instructed to go 6 menus deep into your Xbox privacy settings to turn off Cross play, it (currently) can't be done in game - then you'll typically find 30-50 assists in the top players. - so the battlefield is certainly not level, maybe that's why theirs no leaderboard?

We've also noticed the sound profile is strange, no matter the setting it sounds kind of muffled/numb and certainly isn't up to the usual Battlefield standard which up until this point has been exceptionally crisp & deep - also, if you thought a lack of footsteps in CoD was infuriating, just wait until a bulletproof hovercraft bulldozes your entire squad without a sound.

I could mention a plethora of technical issues like lag / hit registration etc but this could be fixed at any moment, but I'll stick to core/gameplay issues.

Like - once you fire up the much game, 2042 only has 2 game modes & Conquest/Rush (no light hearted deathmatch / team deathmatch modes etc) and the two modes are actually very similar gameplay wise so it soon becomes extremely repetitive and unlike Battlefield 3 / Bad Company 2 - I've not found any environment/destruction aspects of the game particularly appealing, I've found no favourite spots or inspirations so myself & my team mates all feel very disconnected from the game itself, we're all just lemmings and little more, we certainly don't feel like heroic soldiers carrying our team to victory etc & when we win, even when it's been a good match - none of us feel as if we've done anything to really earn that, victory or defeat feel much the same. (though, some defeats can be utterly soul destroying respawn cycle wise)

So 2042 is bland - lets fire up Bad Company 2 & Battlefield 3 in the much hyped Battlefield Portal mode - Again, a resounding "meh" as everything is unlocked, exp is limited, and everything just feels more like a small snippet of the original games with slightly tweaked mechanics with its own bizarre issues, but it just doesn't feel the same games at all. - and again, no leaderboards.

And then outside of game play - The customisation is "ok" but only ok, in games like CoD etc I can happily sit in a lobby waiting for friends spending a good 20 minutes just playing with gun loadouts, checking stats, skins, challenges etc but Battlefield has far less weapons & a lot slower in its pace of unlocks and generally speaking once you've equipped what you want you're done, it's also very hard to ignore the UI just feels clunky & dated... I find when I'm waiting for friends rather than exploring the menus I just go make a cup of tea/watch some TV while I wait.

To show somethings just wrong - We aren't particular fans of the Forza Horizon series (neither am I) but over the past 3 evenings we've found ourselves spending an hour or two in Battlefield & trying Portal in desperate attempts to seek enjoyment, just to find ourselves looking at the clock realizing its only 8pm, so we play a couple of hours of Forza before going to bed.

And this is the game we've all been at maximum hype level for what feels like years, the game every evening one of us says how excited we are for Battlefield, expecting to spend 6+ months playing it every night like we did Warzone/CoD - which we expected it to absolute wipe the floor with... and 3 days in, we're just playing Forza instead and checking for any other titles of interest.

Day One patch is still due, so I hope I can delete this review then but I have a horrible feeling this is all we're getting and in a years time it'll be slightly more refined & bug free, but still not close to what we wanted/expected.

This isn't even Battlefield. We wanted something similar to 3 and 4 and what we got was a Titanfall/ COD crossover with a little bit of Battlefield essence. I got my refund due to the way this franchise is screwing up the one battle simulator we all grew to love. It is not Battlefield anymore, should be called something different.

    No scoreboard, no idea why…

Spotting, still gone and I don’t know who prefers it gone but bring it back ffs. Snipers are overpowered due to no suppression mechanic coupled with how awful assault rifles perform at any range over 200 yards.

As far as I can tell you get no feedback or hit marker when you hit a tank with the rocket launcher unless you happen to disable a part. I’ve hit tanks with 3 rockets and have no visible or score indication that they were even damaged.

If you get in a close gunfight and lose it the only indication of how much health your enemy had is hidden down the bottom right under their player card. Why take away the score for how much damage you did to an enemy?

There is a shockingly low amount of weapons to choose from currently. I suspect they will release more in packs with operator skins and other superfluous cosmetics, they will of course expect you to pay for this.

The operator system has been talked about already by every content creator. It’s **** and it’s entirely there so they can further monetise the game.

In short this feels like a low grade no name first person shooter, it sounds vaguely like playing battlefield but underwater. It is a massive step backwards. They have taken what made their series unique and beloved, thrown it away in the name of profit and rushed out an undercooked mess, devoid of even fun as a redeeming factor.

I won’t complain about the bugs which range from mildly annoying to game breaking. This is Dice after all, they always release a buggy horror show and patch it to greatness after a year. The problem this time is that they can’t patch back in the soul of the franchise, it’s gone from this game.

I never pre order games though as it is pointless and played the free beta. I wanted to like it so much but it was so buggy on Xbox Series X that it was unplayable. With only a few guns to play with, 1 map and mode, and seeing the same two characters over 100 times got old real quick. I believe they built specialists around hazard mode and I think they work well with it but adding them to the core game was a big mistake. With there only being like 11 specialists at launch and not enough added later and mostly everyone playing the same 3-4 specialists, it won't feel like battlefield. Your meant to feel like a faceless solider that can die and not have massive importance. Not every single game needs to make you feel like the hero of the movie or game. Now on to the release or what they call early access  but is still the full game. Again I don't pre order AAA games nor buy day one, pointless. I have the game pass which includes EA Access and allowed me to play 2042 for 9 hours. Within those 9 hours I can paraphrase the rest of the review by saying it sucks and don't buy until a deep sale 6 months later. Now don't get me wrong there's a Very good foundation here. You have the good ole Battlefield engine, the movements of the character feels good along with core gunplay when it works. That's it though. First and foremost there's no campaign, which automatically should of lowered the price of the game not raised it 10 dollars on console  for "next gen", Which is a scam. With no campaign, there should have been more time to add more content to multiplayer and its just not there at all. The thing that worries me most is that BF5 was a "Woke Failure from the start and almost no content added later. Bf 2042 gives you 22 Weapons in total with a handful more dedicated to portal mode, worse then any recent battlefield or call of duty. The few guns you do get come with a very small handful of skins that are very simple bland ones. The vehicles in this game feel cheap and blocky too. You get a few Massive but empty maps without much detail although pretty graphics at times, Two main modes, conquest and Breakthrough. It seems like battlefield strips away more and more modes every game. The performance is not there on new consoles and even worse on pc. Personally I dip below 50fps on Series X all the time. Next you have hazard mode which is like Battle Royale and a very simple version of escape from Tarkov. I thinks there's only map, that's all I got and it gets boring quick. Now the bread and butter and our potential savior is portal. A mode that for now combines Bf 1942 with bad company 2 and bf3 allows you to play 2 maps from each game along with a couple weapons and vehicles from them and a dedicated mode in each game that has potential. Seeing this mode makes me think they should of just remastered some old bf games and put them together in a bundle instead. If they add a lot more maps and guns to these games and even more games to the mode, there is something here. Like I said before I am very worried about post launch content. Even with portal though, you still have a buggy ugly glitchy ui. No scoreboard along with other features missing and poor button mapping. A small but necessary annoyance, on xbox you cannot disable crossplay within the game. You must go to xbox settings and disable crossplay which turns it off for every game which is annoying because I play a lot of co op games and like crossplay. On fps games I do not though with pc players. To wrap it up, there are a lot of bugs in this game but can be ironed out, a good foundation, and a potentially very good portal mode thats worth paying $70 alone in the future. Other then that there are way too many issues and missing content in the game and not worth the money nor time. Absolutely wait for a sale and months for issues to be fixed. Expand

So,BF2042. I can’t recommend it as a BF game. It’s not an improvement and a lot of features found in past BF games are no longer there, or not as good. Yes there are bugs and server issues that will get ironed out, but it just doesn’t feel like a BF game. The maps are huge and so you end up running around too much. There’s no flow to the maps so you end up wondering where to go next. You either end up in an empty area, or one so full of everyone else it’s impossible to move. Too many tanks/helicopters and seemingly indestructible hovercraft. So much spread of bullets, you could empty a whole clip and maybe have 3 or 4 hits on a guy 20m away.

The maps themselves are impressively big, but lots of it is just space. For a post-apocalyptic world, it’s very, very clean. No real building damage to speak of. No clue who is a medic or if you will get revived, or even if they will be able to revive you due to bugs. Nowhere to reload ammo from. No score boards. Too many screens that really irritate after a while. No way to choose what map you want to play on. Half the time it’s the same map again and you start almost at the end of a game. Teams get changed at the end of every game, so no friendly rivalry. Cross play seems to be stuck on for Xbox.

Not enough content. A couple of modes, one of which will be dead in a couple of weeks. Not enough weapons. No longer classes, but ‘specialists’! They cut short BF V support time and extended the dev time and this is what we get? It’s lacking content and not finished.

I can’t recommend it. I cancelled my pre-order after the beta and have used 10 hours on EA play. I can’t say I regret cancelling. I may buy in 6 to 10 months when the price has dropped and they have fixed things, but then again, I might not. End of an era in my opinion. God knows who decided on this direction, but it’s not the right one.

Maybe I'm just getting too old. I've been with the series since Battlefield 1942 on PC, making me one of the players they're trying to placate with their Portal mode. More on that in a bit, but as for the base game: what on earth is this? I remember people being upset at BF4's launch, which I didn't mind. People were upset at BFV's launch, while I completely enjoyed that iteration start to finish. I don't hate for the sake of it, I love this franchise. This is why it is so painful to admit that I don't foresee playing it for the next several years while I hope for a correctly built game.

This thing has more bugs than an NYC flophouse, but that isn't what worries me. Bugs are practically a tradition at launch for this series. Instead, the CORE gameplay is destroyed. I'm not sure that's fixable. The maps are 85% wide open space with no cover. This, combined with the abundance of vehicles makes for 5 minutes of straight running each spawn, only to be mowed down by a vehicle. It's not enjoyable even in passing.

There's no scoreboard which is mind-boggling for an FPS made post-1996. The dissolution of classes in favor of specialists may work for tweens and monetization, but it destroys the traditional experience. Everyone is now a one-man-army and whatever teamwork existed is gone. 'Army of One' didn't last long as a slogan for the US Army, maybe it'll fizzle here as well.

4/5 of the guns are ineffective at any range. Since there are only 22 to begin with, that essentially means there are only four usable weapons. So much for variety. Many classic Battlefield features are missing. Incoming medic indicators are gone. So are squad cameras when deploying. Or a map you can see at deployment. Or fortifications. Or suppression. Or, oh yeah, SCORING. There are no points and no scoreboard to put them on anyway. It's "Whose Line is It Anyway" with hovercrafts.

The Portal mode is a nice thought, but feels closer to an afterthought. Map selection is 2 maps per game, not enough to keep sufficient variety for those attempting to escape the root-canal-like main game experience. The 2 points out of 10 I'm awarding this game are for the thought of at least putting Portal into the game. That said, Portal is to classic battlefield what a splash of gin in a bottle of Dasani is to a gin & tonic. Not quite right and heavily watered down.

What a disappointment from the last franchise I had stayed loyal to. Maybe my gaming days are just finally done, but man was this sad.

And yeah, believe me, it's a massive experience. Massively atrocious.
There is currently a ton of bug, from the simple display bug to some more annoying ones (impossible to respawn after being shot, staying down during an infinite amount of time). This exemple is one, but there is a ton. Hitmarkers not displaying properly. Allies marked as ennemies. Impossible to equip new stuff on weapons.

And to that, there is a ton of ugly things.
Impossible to disable crossplay without editing Xbox system preferences (yep, there is an option in game, but you can't edit the value, it stick to the system default value. Great).
Impossible to find a specific game mode or map. There is no server list, which means you can only pray to find a game in a gamemode you like or a map you like.
There is no matchmaking, which means once your game is done, you're back at the main menu and you need to start another game on your own (spoiler alert : you're most likely gonna end up on the same map just done, happens a lot).
Impossible to track how good or bad you're doing in your game as there is absolutely no scoreboard (on a competitive game. What a nice idea)

They got rid of the amazing class system going on for a "specialist" allowing you to combine every single possibility between equipment, weapons, abilities. This end up in every one playing the same specialist as some are really overpowered. And as they can use anything alongside, there is no "counterpart" to it.
Squad space is still limited to 4 while 5 persons in a squad was an absolut blast.
Maps are empty, with almost no destruction elements.

They wanted to celebrate Battlefield. All they did is remove what is making Battlefield what it is, to add some stupid grappling hook, tornados and wingsuit.

On Steam's store page for BF2042, there are a few reviews by the following individuals that are concisely written and deserve recognition. I also mean to piggyback my review off of them because they speak the same thoughts and opinions as I.

    - MR NOBODY
    - InfiniteFaux
    - MjeeD

It truly baffles me how far off the mark this game is from being what everyone expected.

I expected an experience reminiscent of BF4: being one among dozens of nameless soldiers, locked in dispassionate conflict taking place on a landscape that was indiscriminately chosen to be the victim of the ravages of war.

Feeling truly immersed in a world stricken by poverty, natural catastrophes, and high inter-governmental tensions.

Keeping with the integrity and foundation of BF4 - war adornments (ribbons & medals), extensive customization (tangible & cosmetic), distinct and iconic roles and playstyles (assault, engineer, medic, sniper).

The feeling of cooperative embrace, of being one team fighting for each other's survival.

What I got: a pitiful amalgamation of the most marketable and fast-paced, eSports-esque attributes of Apex Legends, Rainbow Six: Siege and CoD: Warzone.

Right away, playing the beta made me realize how much of a misrepresentation the official trailer was.

It's an ongoing, frantic frenzy of ants on a picnic blanket, running huge stretches by foot while all the vehicles are currently away partying on the top-floor penthouses of skyscrapers. It's basically a cross-country running simulator most of the time while the dysfunctional drivers and pilots steal a helicopter at the start of the round to go on a leisure tour the whole game. It shouldn't be that hard to manufacture or purchase dirtbikes or quads en mass in 2042.

Quirky, superfluous 'specialists' that crack cringy corn-ball quips at the end of the round like, "That was fun," or, "I'm just better than everyone else!", completely dismissing the harsh atmosphere and aesthetic that the initial cutscene paints. That's the kind of flaunty animation sequence you'd see in... perhaps... a battle royale game? I wouldn't be surprised to start seeing first place do the [insert viral physical motion here] at the ends of rounds in the next couple of months. Am I playing Battlefield or Apex Legends?

I hate seeing a group of identical clones running around while I try desperately to cling onto the tiniest sense of realism or familiarity. This was an issue that others may feel indifferent about. To me, after being subject to this "hero shooter" direction for the past several years, it's the last thing this game needs.

It's a haphazard mess with several discrepancies and misplaced decisions, flat out lacking many emblematic facets of Battlefield (or ANY triple-A FPS title, for that matter) such as a scoreboard, squad switching, classes, and more.

What's with this whole No-Pat freedom fighter militia - mind you, with no actual basis or story (R.I.P. campaigns in games) - but then it's just the typical USA vs. Russia trope again?

Conquest (one of **** two available game modes) is an endless series of frustrating and hectic interactions with soldiers and vehicles, including but not limited to: missing hit registers, sporadic fire patterns, nondescript vehicle damage, inconsistent and poorly designed driving & piloting mechanics.

The number of bugs, coding mistakes, balancing issues and content voids will probably result in a patch timeline that competes with even those of No Man's Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 because clearly, EA's focus was on "making a game meant to sell, not to play. (~Mr Nobody)"

I've seen people say they still have hopes for the game's potential.

The thing is, these aren't issues that can be solved with a 12 to 20-month service life like we thought would solve our complaints of BFV.

These are inherent creative decisions that go completely against what a Battlefield game is, and would require a literal re-design of most of the game itself.

There is an utter lack of variety and things to do in the game. I feel like I'm playing a $30 Kickstarter game that got popular on Twitch.

Battlefield 2042 is just so clearly the outcome of the executive imbeciles at EA believing battle royales are still the absolute formula for good game design, completely overruling any one person's desire to remain faithful to an authentic Battlefield experience.

There are so many things that they got wrong... the way helicopters behave, the limited gameplay variety, the questionable issues latent in the settings menu, the confusing and unfulfilling weapon & vehicle progression, the unbalanced nature of combat, and more.

    I'm just really disappointed.

Unplayable. When I try to play the game I get constant error messages. And the few times I have got on I can't pick my loadout. Long time fan and I hate this game in its current state.

And the last thing about it. The game on realease didnt work, and the 10 day beta also (cose there was no day1 patch xdd). You colndt shoot, there was no hitbox, coundt spawn, change weapon. The battlefield series has been cutting good features in replacement for more difficult ones to understand, only to create a mess of wannabe hitmen camping long range rather than push OBJs or revive fallen squad mates. Either these guys have zero game awareness or they’re just as likely to cross the stress without looking. Expand

Is this game designed to appeal to CoD players? Than what is Hazard Zone, and why is it locked behind a paywall? Seriously, what is hazard zone, I've played five matches and it's not a battle royale but it's definitely not battlefield.Am I supposed to pay full price for this game, and a battle pass, and the microtransactions to make my shiny new specialists look good?

I'm not going to waste my time regurgitating what everyone else has said. Go to the subreddit and look at the long list of disappointments this game offers. I'd say check back in 6 months like after the BF4 launch - but there's not a whole lot to salvage.

Battlefield 2042 might be the worst Battlefield game ever released. I was very excited at the beginning, but the fact that Dice completely changed target player and it doesn't feel playing any like other Battlefield games which that turned my excitement into huge disappointment.

Firstly ; I don't know who came up with the idea of Specialists, but it didn't suit for Battlefield. Its more like playing Cod Warzone. ( Not because of only specialists, TTK and weapons fire rates and absence of shooting feel also) I think these specialists are more suitable for warzone and rainbow six.

Freeload system is another problem. Classes have no meaning anymore, as it is a system that usually pushes everyone to use RPGs. No one takes medic or ammo mostly. If you come across a person using ammo bag or medic, be sure to thank them. Since the free loadout offers the opportunity to use both equipment and all kinds of weapons, you can no longer even guess what your opponent's class is. In the past, the times when i was playing with friends, when the opponent sniper fired at us, we were making strategies about how to approach and neutralize enemy by somehow putting pressure on him, but now when you see a player using a sniper gun and you want to reach him, he can run away while using a Grapling Hook because he is an "Assault". or "Support", you will have to encounter a turret shooting at you. In short, prepare yourself such ridiculous scenarios like these. There is no single player campaign mode. After a legendary job with Battlefield 1, Dice also wants you to pay $70 or €80 for this game who does not even offer A NEXT GEN EXPERIENCE. As if that wasn't enough, you also need to buy the Season Pass in order to play some Portal maps. Do not support such money hunger companies. Finally, dualsense features have not been added to the game for PlayStation 5 users. However, they know how to ask for $70. They were saying that the game is well optimised for Xbox series x but my friends having problem about " crushing game " just like BF4 times. Visually, the game is never satisfying. Optimization & lag issues are undermining the game. The atmosphere of war is almost nonexistent. Even Battlefield 1, which was released years ago, had a much better atmosphere and was also very impressive graphically. Likewise, the sound design of battlefield 1 %200 better than 2042 the sad fact that here the weapons almost does not give the feeling of hitting anymore.

There is one thing I'm really curious about. What have you done for 3 years? A 3-year-old product shouldn't have been this bad...

I did all of these analysis as a Battlefield fan. It's not my style to playing call of duty games. Concept and vision in 2042 is definitely not for core battlefield fans.

Doesn’t feel like a Battlefield game at all. The flagship Conquest mode, now with 128 players has no play structure or tactical bearing involved. Getting bumped off from every angle and axis half of the time when you spawn in the fight. It’s also a very poorly balanced game when it comes to game mode population and most vehicles, weapons plus the stupidest idea to have character personalities that are ‘customised’, instead of original classes and loadouts? Other issues include: poor kill notification, ridiculous looking post-match ‘avatar clone line up’, a confusing and unclear round reward and gear unlock system - makes the game wholly unrewarding and left feeling like you’ve achieved nothing, regardless of how you performed. It’s like DICE were so focused on getting 128 player on a single map and taking on COD - that they didn’t bother considering much else? A real example of ‘caught in your own soundbox’ development here.

Stop trying to rip-off other games’ ideas, and get back to what used to make BF the best shooters of all time. I’ve played every BF starting in 2002, and I’ve never once felt the need to write a poor review. But sadly and with no exaggeration: this could be the worst one so far. Good job I played a trial for 10 hours and didn’t waste my money beforehand, this is the ONLY BF game in franchise history that I have not purchased. I’m giving it a 1/10 for the inclusion of the legacy game modes - which is a nice touch - but unfortunately they are so unpopulated you can’t get a good match going.

BF Vietnam, BF2, Bad Company 2 and BF4 were utterly superb - take another look at what made those outstanding - and get back to the basics!

Destruction is still cool, and in the end I have to give the creators credit for the fact that the much marketing-washed akedo has its moments. Everything else that made a good Battlefield is completely missing, and that chase for record-breaking size or player count is really a poor substitute for well-designed maps, rich content in the form of game modes, and certainly no substitute for the original class system that the gameplay has always relied on in the first place. Battlefield 2042 is a huge disappointment for gamers and the Battlefield franchise. Had this been the product of an indie developer, then this might be a different story as it would be understandable how a game like this could be the product of an independent studio that doesn’t have enormous corporate backing. Instead, EA pumped more resources into creating a CGI film that acts as the only real source of storyline context than ensuring the game was going to live up to the enormous amount of hype they were trying to create. I hate saying such negative things in my reviews, but when a game developer can’t be bothered to even try and live up to it’s own legacy, then I have to call it as I see it and for that very reason, I don’t recommend this game. Not even the nostalgia or temptation of ‘Battlefield Portal’ is enough to save this game from itself.

Battlefield 2042 absolutely should have been pushed back by EA and DICE to some point in 2022. Instead, the version of this game that is currently available has been virtually unplayable for me at times since first releasing. Even beyond this, though, some of the key design changes that DICE has made in Battlefield 2042 don't feel for the better. Rather than improving on the core Battlefield experience that fans loved with Battlefield 3, 4, or Bad Company 2, 2042 is a bloated husk of its former self that is trying to recapture some semblance of its previous glory. As a fan that has been playing this series for well over a decade, Battlefield 2042 is a massive disappointment that I struggle to think is even worth saving.
