Seems like this game has been the final nail in the coffin regarding Darby's departure from Ubisoft, hopefully he joins a team that will give him freedom to create the story he wants to create. It is hard not to see this game as a money grabbing tool that Ubisoft have created with the Helix store, limiting the amount of content (armour sets, weapons) in the base game then adding all other content behind pay walls is disgusting charging £10 - £15 per armour pack for a 'singleplayer' game, I wrote a post on reddit and made a petition regarding this if you want to know more follow the links below I go little further in depth regarding the matter. A intriguing change of pace that gives the Assassin's Creed series the breathing room it has so desperately needed for eons, without making any compromises on content. Well worth your time to enter the gates of Valhalla

    9. Variety of different enemies.
    10. Stunning graphics, landscapes, cities.
    Negatives:
    1. Like usual with Ubisoft games, performance could be better, but this
launch is about 300 times better than RDR2 PC version launch (and Rockstar had whole years for that).
    2. Some bugs as expected with huge open world games, but nothing awful.
    3. Is it just me or water seems kinda empty? Maybe i just haven't explored enough idk, i was expecting giant squids, Odyssey had whales, so why not.
Conclusion: One of the most beautiful and fun games i have played in long time.

And while many who like this game keep playing it and never really visit sites like this, metacritic attracts haters who very often don't even have particular game, just to give low scores, because it's so easy here. Any, absolutely any loser can make metacritic account with 3 minutes and give 0 score and that will affect overall score, it shouldn't be like that, but it is. For example yesterday one person made over 8 accounts in 20 minutes and gave 0's to this game, because his version was censored or whatever. His comments and scores are still on this site, that's how easy it is to manipulate that user score. Expand

While I agree that the story is very interesting and the characters are well written, I do feel that they are the only thing compensating for frustrating controls, unclear mechanics and combat that feels like a chore. As a fan of the series it feels like a step back from previous games.

This is not an assassin creed game. They finish the modern day storyline so suddenly. They should finish the story of each character. Every year new character. Disgusting. This series dies with AC4 black flag. This game is combination of Witcher 3, Red dead redemption 2 and Dragon age. Stop copying and make something new.

11/20/20-12/18/20 (108hrs.) Finished everything in the game 100%, but not as great as I'd hoped it would be (I did have very high expectations). I definitely loved the Order of the Ancients hunting, the combat, and the abilities, as well as the Norse Mythology sections (Asgard and Jotenhiem), but the main story was dull and way too long.

Overall story (spoiler-free): Eivor is a viking that gets sick of his/her homeland and runs off to England to set up a new home with his/her brother. England being separated into four kingdoms at the time has a bit of a mixed reaction to the new arrivals, but each kingdom has problems to solve, so he/she gets down to business of being helpful/murdering people.

Hardly any memorable side characters by the end, but I really really hope they get rid of Layla Hassaan. I didn't ever like the modern day sections in any AC game, even when it was Desmond Miles as the protagonist. I don't want to hear Shaun and Rebecca's eye-rolling banter or the extremely wooden acting of the lady that voices Layla.

I did like Eivor himself (as I played it), the Norse accent was spot on to my ear and his interactions made him seem very human and compassionate toward people in need, while also being a monster on the battlefield.

Clearly the lady Eivor is the preffered character for at least part of the story, as one whole chapter is dedicated to a very forced romance with a male character from Eivor's past. I have no problem at all with any gender relationship combination, but I've never seen a romance so forced into a story. They don't give you the option to shut it down until you've already been forced to flirt for a few hours. Romance in video games is already really weird and sketchy, you do not have to have romance in an AC story at all and it would be better for it.

The abilities were done really well, in that you have to find books in the game world to unlock them. So you really have incentive to search for more than just crafting materials. Particularly memorable abilities like throwing a rope spear to pull someone to you (Scorpion-style!) or summoning a wolf never got old through over a hundred hours. On top of a polished version of the combat that has been continually improved in the more recent AC games, I was often switching weapon combinations and builds to see which was the most fun, and they all held my interest for long periods of gameplay. The dual-wielding is an excellent addition as well.

The armor system is also quite improved from previous games by giving you less overwhelming options and making armor and weapons feel unique and worth upgrading. I wouldn't change a thing there, although my favorite armor (Berserker) was a microtransaction, so you can't win em' all.

There were a few glitches, which may be patched out over time. Quite a bit of awkward incorrect pronouns as male Eivor and the classic AC jumping in to thin air when you clearly didn't want to. Also had a glitch with Eivor staying in 'drunk mode' every time I loaded a save and the music getting stuck on the dramatic battle soundtrack. I did also lose a little progress due to a door not having an interaction icon when it should have.

I will be playing the DLC (Ireland and the Druids sounds too cool to miss) but I think the thing that would have made the game way better would be to cut the story down a bit. There is a lot of fluff that gets very boring and it outshines the climactic and exciting moments.

The difference? You can’t slip these boring main missions, whereas in odyssey, side mission could be skipped if you started them and didn’t enjoy; whereas now, since it’s part of the main mission, I’m forced to sit through boring mission that I really found uninteresting. That’s coupled with the fact that the characters are different in each sequence. It barely builds on story so not as much depth can be reached in terms of over arching story. Yes there’s some things that tie in, but I would have liked one long story to progress, much like Odyssy’s search for the parents/brother. In Valhalla, there isn’t much purpose to everything that you’re doing other than “gaining allies” and that propose remains the same each time you start a new sequence. There just no development and it all just blended into one which I really didn’t enjoy. In addition, the bird can’t mark targets anymore! So there’s isn’t really much use to using it. There are some pros though, combat was refined. Graphics are better than ever and there are some interesting modern day elements. But damn is this game long and filled with boring content! Much preferred odyssey IMO Expand

The graphics and sound are absolutely stunning and the developers have obviously put a lot of thought into the characters, plot and activities in an effort to keep the player engaged. And a small complaint Eivor is just too small, I assume to accommodate the female version they've made the male version tiny and it just looks dumb. Not the worst in the series because Odyssey exists but easily a close second to last.

Assassins Creed is my favrotie series of all time, so im harder on this series than I am with any other game.. and while Valhalla is a great game and my score will reflect that, as an assassins creed game, assassins creed Valhalla isa complete disappointment.
Here you play as avore, becauseubisoft cares more about its precious sales you chose either man version or female version because ubisoft is afraid to commit and want to make everyone happy.. you set off on a Viking adventure to basically take over England during the dark ages.. and sadly this is more of a Viking game with assassins creed mechanics rather than an assassins creed game where you play as a Viking, the lore of the Templars and the assassins is there.. infct the whole uncovering the order side thing odyssey had going on is valhallas main focus, and I love that… however the game built around it is the most hallow money grab of a game in probably the entire assassins creed series… they sold you on Vikings, rob and pillage, this is fun about 0 times, its never fun going into an area for a raid, opening chests and collecting all of the loot, its repetive and bland, and that can be said for the entire game… im one to uncover every inch of an assassins creed game, read very document, platinum it.. but assassins creed Valhalla is so hollow that I found myself skipping through a lot of its dialog as the story is broken up into individual kingdoms you go out and help… this is less of an assassins creed game, you know.. a game where you relive memories of someone that was supposed to have actually existed to learn more about the orer and the places of the pieces of edden, and just a boring Viking game where you go from kingdom to kingdom taking care of that kingdoms individual problems, it’s a 70 hour long game of individual mini stories that by themselves could be okay experiences, but in an assassins creed game they feel like a waste of time not adding anything to the overall world of assassins creed, no one will remember Valhalla as a step forward for the series, infact in a lot fof places Valhalla steps back, for example its loot, there is next to none, yet you still collect it from time to time, its such an awkward system that you forget there are other weapons and armorus you can pick up.. youll mpost likely stick to the first or second piece of gear you find in the game and stick to that all the way through, especially thanks to the grind heavy upgrading system here that require a ridiculous amount of recourses to upgrade weapons… where Valhalla steps forward though is you making choices that actually matter, your choices have consequences, you have different paths with different characters you can go down that don’t feel empty like odyssey did.. but back to the intial point, this is great if assassins creed were an rpg seres set in different time periods… but its not, its meant to be an experience of a story already told, not an unwritten story of your grandpa and you get to chose if he banged other Vikings or not… tell me if avor was gay or not, don’t let me chose, again.. commit to a character, tell me their story… this is not a solution to the story telling critques players have.. this is assassins creed, not dragon age.. tell me the story as it happened… but this is thebiggest assins creed game to date, though bigger isn’t always better, another first, this s the first time I gave up on collecting all the things in an assassins creed game, for one,, again the world felt boring pointless and hallow, even the side quests that were supposed to be the talk of the town, except for the mini game orlog, it had its hooks in me like gwent, and I love hunting down the zealots of the land, bringing my back to the original assassins creed.. but the colelctables here, the game just makes you work too hard to get, one too many are locked behind story progress – why even put it on the map then… and evry other one ios locked behing an environment puzzle.. I don’t mind this eveyr once in a while , but map cleaning in assassins creed is a form of meditation, if I have to figure out how to get to literally every chest in the world, it isn’t meditation anymore, it’s a puzzle game outside of the story, no thanks. Also traversal here is probably the worst in the series too, its wakward, plenty pof annoying deaths at the hands of climbing, The biggest disappointment overall is this games story, the worst ending in history if you can even call it an ending and the outside of the animus world features the least likably protagonist of all time, smoking doesn’t make you look like a badass, it makes you look inconsiderate of the people around you, but again, assassins creed Valhalla is a great game, the combat is fun, you can go down different paths to play the way you prefer, brute, ranged, stealth, or a mix of all 3…

I like it. In a lot of ways better than Odyssey. No more trash weapons, you can build, you can duel like in RPG (block, stun, weapon combos, shields). I like worlds events, they are so funny. No stupid quests "bring 10 bunch of something". And the world is great and beautiful. And yeah, you can raid. Vikings!

Pretty good. The second Assassin's Creed I've ever played all the way through. First one was Odyssey, which I loved. I've tried every one before but never finished one. Graphics are amazing. I liked the story here, but I didn't like the way it was structured into a bunch of small story arcs because it meant that there were very few characters that had a relationship with Eivor throughout. Most of the other main characters were basically checked out after the prologue with only very minor check ins until the story wrapped up. For that reason, the whole thing didn't feel as cohesive as Odyssey. One other thing that drove me crazy is that they didn't adopt the really cool feature from Odyssey that decoupled the way your armor looks from its stats. I also did not like the armor/weapon progression too much... I literally used the same set for nearly the entire game because I preferred those perks. It meant I never really felt prompted to try out other weapons like I did in Odyssey. Voice acting was great. The funny side quests were great though I stopped doing them around hour 50 because I just wanted to get the game over with by that point. It took me another 25 hours, which I felt was too long since I wasn't really enjoying the way the story was built any more. I'm saying a lot of negative things here, but my score really is an 8/10. Comparing this game to the wide array of games out there, it really was quite good. I'm not much a fan of indies. Gimme that AAA big budget effort. Expand

I wasn’t sure if I liked Valhalla at first. It seemed kind of slow in the beginning. Some of the quests weren’t too exciting. But after I got about ½ way through it- it became more fun and interesting. I played the all the main quests, Asgard and Jotenheim. I only played one mystery and one world event. I raided all the main raids but still wasn’t able to fully boost my settlement. So you have to seek out more regular chests in the world than I did. I wish I knew to save many of my materials until later in the game- especially to boost health, upgrade weapons, and upgrade my arrow quiver. I didn’t like the present day stuff- wish they’d just abandon that altogether. But it wasn’t that much of the game. The most difficult boss for me was Goodwin. It took me quite a while to finally beat him. He was harder than Basim or Fenrir. I did not seek out the Sisters- so I can’t speak to them. Overall I ended up feeling quite happy with the game. I’m glad I spent the time with the game that I did. Granted, I loved the first AC games much more. But this is a great game by itself. I’m hoping the DLC expansions will be just as good. Overall I recommend it if this is your genre of games! I'd say it's one of the best of 2020 after Ghost of Tsushima- and waiting on Cyberpunk! Expand

Repetitive and padded. This feels like a big step back from odyssey. The removal of sidequests makes levelling harder and the leap in recommended level just keeps growing from section to section.

On top of that the characters and story are quite dull. It's a 20 hour game that's been painfully stretched over 60 hours. Content for the sake of content.

Whilst intriguing at first, the lore all gets spun around everywhere(inc modern day stuff), then it just ends. Either they took stuff out to put into the DLC or they had to rush the ending to release in time.

Game is overall good but the constant unskippable finishers when killing enemies really starts to grind on patience. If that weren’t bad enough it takes control of your camera and character so more often then not your back is to the enemies and your camera is panned away from them.

Expand

EDIT : I modify my first review because the bugs preventing you from unlocking 2 big achievements have been patched without having to restart a new game, rare enough to mention, nice effort ubisoft. I've taken a real pleasure to return to ACV for these last achievements, but the end still upset me, particularly Basim returning to the present wihtout further question from the team.. One of the best AC opus still.

1st review : Well .. very nice opus , beautiful graphics, deep characters, story, neat twists. Why isn't it a 9 ? Because of the ubisoft day one syndrom of course, bugs (main and side quests, sucesses and not the small ones). At the time it's nearly impossible to get all the successes. So, I may change the note when it'll be corrected. And also.. the end is so flat.. not mediocre but 150 hours for that, did you say scenaristic trick/ shortcut ??

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So let me say first I’ve played most of the assassins creed titles. Odyssey is my favorite. So first I’d like to say what the game did well here with Valhalla. Graphics are great but game was buggy. It did a good job making you actually like Layla. Which was a huge issue I had with Odyssey. It did a good job tying the previous games together. Now to discuss what I did not like. I honestly think the characters aren’t that pretty as vain as that is. I also found the combat boring and clunky. A sharp contrast to Odyssey which I throughly enjoyed the combat for. I didn’t like the idea of giving blind devotion to a brother who is truly a rival. You don’t feel like a hero in the game. Again a sharp contrast to Odyssey. The feeling of the game is bleak sad and full of confusion. Even the Terrain in comparison to Odyssey is like eh just not that pretty. I wanted to see Eivor the hero saving the day. The game focuses too much on giving you a morally gray dilemma. Here are two bad choices...now choose lol. Finally...the end...I gotta be Loki really? Dude turned out he was out to kill me the entire game and now I gotta play as this dude? Yea I just didn’t like a lot of story choices here. Sadly I bought all the dlcs and I’m praying they redeem this game cause it was a bit of a disappointment for me. Expand

After reading that,, I grew concerned because both Odyssey and Origins were grindy making combat challenging by giving miniscule XP and forcing the player to buy a XP booster. My concerns were mostly alleviated when the territories of England were all a reasonable level. For the most part, two territories would be of the same power level, allowing the player to raise his/her power level with more ease then past games. I believe Valhalla's grindiness was more in line with that of Origins. Origins does not have an XP booster. For the most part,,, as long as you complete all the side missions in Origins you will be fine level wise. Similarly in Valhalla, since there is a lot to do in the main quest you level up quickly, however the XP booster does help. Odyssey on the other hand, had a really bad grind, enemies who were a few levels higher than you would resist attacks. Odyssey requires an XP booster to be fun. The story was mediocre, I thought it was ridiculous how many of the main characters flirt with Evior. It got to the point of immersion breaking sometimes. However, like Alex from the Angry Joe Show said Valhalla is being compared to games like God of War and Ghost of tsushima. God of War did Norse mythology well and Ghost of tsushima was a better Assassins creed. Recently,, I finished Assassins Creed Valhalla and clocked around 53 hours in the game. Another gripe I have is the anticlimactic ending and the lack of end game content and side content. Mysteries,, collectibles and wealth do not really appeal to me, I wanted more story side content. I did not even find all the orders of ancients members because it was too tedious of a task to find all the evidence to uncover their identity. However, I am waiting for a new game plus mode to replay it. I give Assassin creed Valhalla a 6/10. It is a reskin of Origins and Odyssey,, however they changed the progression system for the better, the story was mediocre and the lack of endgame content and side missions cause me to deduct a few points. Impressed with this game. The map is very cool to explore, the music is great, the story (on AC standards) is good but can be a bit too repetitive. There are too many characters that don't need to be there and this drags the pacing. The gameplay overall is enjoyable.

Much better experience than the previous game which felt more like an eternal grind to level up just to be able to keep playing the story.
Feels like a breath of fresh air after the Greek tragedy that was Odyssey.

Some people are way too harsh on it, like woah. "Combat wasn't perfect, i had some bugs, few missions were boring BOOM HERE'S YOUR ZERO OUT OF 10". That's ridiculous.
Yeah it's not perfect, so what? 99% of games aren't, deal with it or get new hobby. Overall it's still one of the better gaming experiences i have had in 2020. At least it feels like solid Assassin's Creed entry, unlike

Combat (to me) feels okay, i have read some youtube comments that "combat is so bad", i strongly disagree. I bet they watched some youtube who told that he didn't like combat and now some people just spread false information. It's not perfect, but far from bad. Would recommend.

Maybe little bit early to review it, because i haven't finished main story, but i like it a lot.
I hardly had any interest in missions in Odyssey, but Valhalla is different. Might be one of the best games i have played this year, alongside Doom Eternal.

Its just hilarious to read these hate comments. Most real "Assassin's Creed" fans seem to like this game a lot. I bet 90% of these who gave 0 or 1, never even played it. It's just too obvious. Literally created this account to show my support to this great game. Been fan over 7 years.

Enjoying every almost every minute of this game. Not all quests are super interesting, but overall it's very well done.

It is highly satisfying completing a story arc or traversing the world and finding things that you felt that other players might not have stumbled across due to the nature of the open world and its use of way finders. The lack of load times on Xbox Series S is truly impressive given the nature of environments, landscape, and elements that are present on screen. There were a few issues from characters floating in mid-air, bizarre enemy AI, and straight up freezes, although these were far and few between given the scope of it all. Intuitive and varied combat help keep things fresh, even if it does take a fair few hours of gameplay to really get going. Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a thoroughly enjoyable, open-world RPG that is an absolute must for Xbox owners.

In many aspects Valhalla resembles most of Ubisoft’s games, but fortunately progression feels a lot more natural this time around. The game’s not perfect but I had lots of fun conquering new territories, plundering churches, and pillaging coastal villages while following a mature story and enjoying gorgeous, believable medieval Britain. What could have been an elephants' graveyard of forgotten ideas instead feels like a series-wide victory lap. [Issue#353, p.96]
