It is a hardcore platformer game with precise controls and good level design.
You will die easily like flappy bird, but the control is consist and you won't complain it as a bad game.
Some secrets in each level which may make you play easier.
    A challenging game!

I will keep this short. This game was free for Games for Gold on Xbox One back in 2014, I played it and I sucked at it. I got suck on level 2 or even 1 and I quit the game and uninstalled it. If you like challenging games, then get this.

I'm kind of disappointed in these retro Xbox One games. Most of them can't recapture the day, as gamers these days aren't particularly interested in a new retro franchise. Instead they just go for the "Kung-Fu" 8 levels and rinse and repeat games. Which means if the game doesn't have a huge hook to get you addicted, you won't stick with it too long. I would much rather spend $59 for 100 untouched full versions of retro classics. Kind of like Nintendo did for the "remix" series. Except I want the full game, not a sample of the game as a mini game.

Volgarr is kind of challenging, and kind of like a retro game, but it doesn't have any of that 80's retro addictive play. So it will probably quickly find you calling it a day. I find the upgrading armor to be annoying. 2 upgrades (clearing to a chest without taking any damage) give you a better shield, but one hit, takes your shield away. Instead of downgrading to your original shield.

If I had paid for it, I would be upset. However, it was free for me as part of my gold membership and it's a decent retro game, as a freebie. Just an extra game, to give your guest something to do, when they visit. But something only someone truly interested in a new "retro" game would want.

Very much a clone (and welcomed adaptation) to the arcade classic, "Rastan". Unfortunately, the game is also just as impossible to progress through. "Volgarr" is far too difficult off the bat to be enjoyable, at least from my perspective. The nostalgia alone made me give it a 6.

Fun game with a retro feel in all senses: graphics, music, limited checkpoints and DIFFICULTY! Defiantly and 'acquired taste' kind of game, but if you love retro hack and slash games, then this will be right up your alley. Game can be frustrating with lots of 'trial and error' that will have you playing the same entire level over and over again. Very limited replay with only one game mode, one difficulty and no online capabilities. Expand

This game is pretty hard. But that is why its appealing. The controls are tight but the jumping seems a bit cheap because you can't change direction in mid-air. The game doesn't have a good story but the levels and challenge and enemy variety keep the rating up.

It’s a very solid game that will challenge you but it’s not cheap or unfair.

Hard is cool these days, but Volgarr simply isn't all that much fun. [Issue#119, p.73]

Volgarr the Viking is an amazing accomplishment. Its developers have taken the skeleton of a classic title and transformed it into the greatest game the 80s never produced.
