    For the budget price that’s being asked for VASARA Collection, it’s an absolute steal.

    It may not feature the crown jewels of what is the most saturated genre in video games, but the experience is distinct enough to warrant interest from genre fans. Purists aside, the four-player local coop mode is a great way to spend an afternoon with gamers of all types.

    VASARA Collection compiles the two great Japanese classics of "Shmup", together with the great addition that makes it contemporary: the Timeless mode. Both reviving the classics and playing this new procedural mode is a pleasure that fans of the genre will enjoy.

    Vasara Collection brings two rare Japanese shmups to a modern audience in a competent (if relatively no frills) experience. Unique melee mechanics and a quirky feudal Japan setting make them well worth experiencing, just don’t expect them to be easy. The bonus Timeless mode is a nice addition but feels a bit wasted.

    The Vasara Collection is an unusual choice for a modern game port. A game not many people would have heard of and a genre that is more niche than most. I would certainly recommend turning down the difficulty for most people to ensure that you have a good time. But if you are the sort of person that loves the kind of challenge a bullet hell game provides, well there is certainly some of that in there as well. There is plenty of game for the low price point and I definitely had some fun mixed in with the frustration.

    The Vasara Collection will appeal to the scrolling shoot em up fans as it combines both the old-style games and a modern re-imagining of the original games. It is far too difficult for anyone who is not experienced in this genre of games, and it can get old and frustrating fast after repeatedly dying in the game. But for those who like this style of game and like a hardcore challenge then this collection is packaged nicely just for you.

    Without a doubt, I would not be missing anything if I skipped this collection. I didn’t miss out when they were originally released either. However, there is a strong contingent of shmup fans that will love it. The asking price is very fair, and if anyone enjoyed the originals they will appreciate the chance at not only playing the classics but the enhanced version as well. The Vasara Collection is a bit on the harder side, so anyone new to the genre will best spend their time elsewhere.
