There is a single player mode that is essentially a wave survival mode where you oversee a defensive position, but can also commandeer any of the turrets or the occasional vehicle/hero character (both work in the same way gameplay wise with both a health bar and timer limiting your use. The differences being that vehicles will respaw after 2 minutes while Hero characters are tied to you directly killing units.. It doesnt get as repetitive as you would think due to the creative environments and changing enemy factions. As you progress and beat missions you get coins that you can spend in the shop to unlock new units/upgrades to your turrets.
There are quite a few different armies to play as. WW1 Germans, Futuristic Space marines, and a few others, as well as some recognizable franchises such as GI Joe, He Man, Cobra and Assassins Creed 2 teams. I've only played as the first two so far and both are very different. IE, the Germans artillery has a longer range but the space marines have better anti-air guns.
I'm interested in the franchise armies but they are seemingly locked behind a pay wall. I'm not anti-micro transactions or anything. But paying 1/3 of the price of the whole game for a single team isn't thrilling me I'm assuming that the $30 dollar version has all of that included, so if you are willing to put in a bit extra up front go with that one.
The armies all have different visuals and gameplay tweaks. But they all play the same. You get limited number of spaces to build turrets, consisting of anti infantry/vehicle/air and an artillery gun. All of these units can have their health/attack/range upgraded up to 3 times. Although all of the upgraded above the first one are locked at the beginning they are quickly unlocked by playing.
There are a few negatives. The AI on the non player controlled cannons are usually ok for handling their own unless they're overwhelmed, and they will target units that are closer to your base. But occasionally they'll let some units walk on by while it targets a unit in the back of the group, as well as occasionally not firing at full capacity (a group of units will be nearby and the gun will occasionally pause and stand there, I'm aware of the guns needing to reload, which happens, but occasionally I'll notice a gun acting weird).
Another issue is that despite having good visuals, some units, especially planes can be really hard to find, the worst case being on the space level or airplanes flying against a similarly colored background, the characters are given bright colors to stand out but especially when there's a lot going on it can be real hard to figure out what's happening.
Another issue I have is that while most campaign levels are really well designed, there are a couple that I really didn't care for. Eventually I figured out most of them although the one I am presently stuck on is proving to be more frustrating then being a genuine challenge.
One last thing that kinda bugs me is that the hit detection in this game isn't great. Even when targeting enemy towers I've had my shots go right through due to being at an odd but not really that difficultnof an angle. Probably the worst case I've had has been trying to shoot down airplanes from my own plane. There is a degree of challenge with air vs air combat, but even when you take leading your targets and such into account it still feels like your shots are not registering when they should.
I haven't played any multiplayer at this point.
If you're a fan of tower defense games this is definitely worth picking up. It has it's problems, but none of them get in the way of having a good time.… Expand
