With a group of friends, Ghost Recon Wildlands will offer countless hours of fun within the vast and beautifully created version of Bolivia. If you’re going it alone, however, the repetitive gameplay and the lack of any character development and story depth offers a far less attractive package. Wildlands is a solid open-world game that is let down by an overly long and repetitive story, along with too many small bugs and niggles for it to be great.

As ambitious as it is, Ghost Recon: Wildlands fails to break free from the Ubisoft blueprint. However, that doesn't stop it from being an addictive, sprawling shooter, particularly when playing online.

As only the second open world game in the Clancyverse, Ghost Recon: Wildlands is a middlingly safe tactical shooter and a slightly wasted opportunity given the ambitious scope of its seemingly boundless map. While its main strength is its mission diversity, it doesn’t take long to lose the motivation after reaching El Sueno's doorstep. Even with a foursome of highly trained friends, Wildlands eventually reveals its diminishing returns. The feeling of positive immediacy and dopamine hits begin to wane sooner than you expected from a game with such a large and diverse world.

A solid but glitch-riddled open-world tactical shooter that falls agonisingly short of realising its full potential, Ghost Recon Wildlands is the very definition of a 'nearly' game. It's so very nearly brilliant, but there are a few too many problems with it that mar the overall experience. Shame.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands is a solid sandbox adventure for groups of up to four friends. In solo play, Ghost Recon: Wildlands loses a bit of its mojo, but the game's unprecedented scale and piles of content should prove euphoric for fans of open world games.

While the concept of team action in an open world (in fact, the biggest one from Ubisoft yet) is interesting without a doubt, the execution is lackluster. This is a typical example for “Jack of all trades, master of none”, where every aspect of the game is overshadowed by competition which simply is more refined´.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands is by no means a terrible, or even bad, game: it provides moments of intense fun, particularly with friends, when you're trying to clear out a base without being detected. Yet, it has some serious issues. The A.I. coding is just not good; the huge draw distances causes stutter and screen-tearing on consoles; and even though there is undeniably a lot of content in the form of missions and things to collect, it does become repetitive and dull—just how quickly it becomes a drag depends on your tolerance for walking around and collecting things, I suppose. But if you don't have friends to play with, and you have to rely on boneheaded teammate A.I. to help you fight questionable and irrational enemy A.I., then the game's problems are amplified.

In any other year, Ghost Recon: Wildlands would be a fine if somewhat unremarkable open-world game. By a twist of fate, it happened to release in a very crowded season for open-world games, which may make it seem pale in comparison. Where it stands out from Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Horizon: Zero Dawn, though, is its multiplayer focus. Though I found the repetition too much, those cathartic moments of perfect planning in multiplayer are enough to warrant giving it a try, as long as you have a squad of friends to back you up.

You shouldn’t buy Wildlands right now. The types of glitches and problems we experienced in previews still rear their head; while they’re forgivable in a pre-release environment, the same isn’t true when buying what should be a finished product. The entire experience is best summed up by our multiplayer adventure: you’ll run around a lot, but you’re not going to be able to get much done.

Typical Ubisoft game at its worst. Big open world with no variety or story to keep you going.
It's a big map with sparkled places around with identical missions.
It seems the game was made by different team that made previous Ghost Recon games. While the previous games had their own problems, they were polished and fun to play. Wildlands, on the other hand, seems very amateurish and boring.

All the game has is marketing lines, big open world with a lot of to explore, weapon customization etc.
All you do in the game is drive around to the same mission you just did a moment ago. There's no sense of tactical battles, tension seen in previous GR games. You get to the place, a few bad guys pops put, there's a little shooting COD style, then you drive to another place to do exact same thing until you discover philosophical side in yourself asking how long can you do the same things. So much for exploring the big open world. The weapon customization is just as inspiring as the gameplay.
Coop doesn't change anything. The same horrendous gameplay, just with other people.

We are big fans of stealth games, open world games, shooters, and this game covers all of those bases (stealth if you want).

It is true that the dialogue is lacking. Your squad mates are unnecessarily crass during the open world bits, and the story events keep to that trend. I also found myself turning off the radio every single time I got in a vehicle. There's no overlooking the lack of quality here.

A lot of the missions you will do are similar to each other in objective, but the locale and best way to go about accomplishing them will be different. In the 30 hours I have in so far, I have done many extraction and assassinations but if you enjoy putting on the silencers, scoping out your target area and accomplishing your task without being detected...then you will never not have fun with this game. I personally never tire of those experiences and Wildlands let me have them non-stop.

The shooting in Wildlands feels very good, and I enjoy that any enemy can be taken down in one shot regardless of difficulty (note: my friend and I are playing on the hardest setting). The guns sound great, suppressed or not, have weight to the shots, and like most games now are accompanied by a red kill 'x' when your shot is fatal. This is extremely satisfying for long range sniping, as your bullets are effected by gravity and those 600m+ shots will arc in and provide great enjoyment.

The driving and vehicle controls are pretty wonky. It definitely has taken getting used to piloting helicopters and planes, and even driving the motorcycles. The helicopters are the worst however, with no way to turn the rudder (RB or LB in most modern games with such vehicles) so precise movement is pretty difficult. Some realism was sacrificed for ease of use on most vehicles, as they are able to drive up embankments that should be impossible by the laws of physics...and they also turn themselves right side up most of the time when a tumble or roll occurs. Some may not like this, but when you're in the middle of nowhere and your car rights itself it is handy.

Overall, I have loved my time with the game but there are weaknesses holding it back. If you're like me and enjoy the things I have mentioned above, like being able to choose stealth or going in swinging, long range sniping fun and antics, great weapon customization and numbers, then I really think you will like this game and your time with it. Just be prepared for bad dialogue throughout and some fighting with the vehicle controls.
