With engaging combat and a story to accompany it, Tokyo 42 is a great addition to the ID@Xbox program.

For the record, I’m not a huge fan of crime simulators like Grand Theft Auto V, so this game is out of my usual comfort zone. With that confession out of the way, SMAC Games has turned out a fun adventure that, despite the issues I have with its gameplay, keeps me wanting more. Tokyo 42 has found an unexpected fan in me, and if you give it a chance, it just may find one in you, as well.

There’s something about Tokyo 42 that makes it quite engrossing. Playing it often feels like hard work due to the annoying camera, but it’s strangely rewarding.

If you remember Syndicate or GTA, Tokyo 42 offers all you need. Become an assassin in a futuristic Tokyo city with this isometric action shooter based on pixel art style. Tokyo 42 could be engrossing because the high difficulty of the action, but its isometric perspective could give us some problems.

A beautiful yet flawed game that draws you in with its stylish looks and feels like nothing else. [Aug 2017, p.78]

Tokyo 42 sports a gorgeous visual style, with an incredibly detailed and alive isometric pixel art world; on this backdrop comes alive a solid, if not too original or brilliant, twin-stick shooter with stealth mechanics partly ruined by some heavy frame rate drops and perspective problems. It remains however a very fascinating and unique game, definitely worth a try.

An astonishing world and fun gameplay are hampered by fiddly controls. [Sept 2017, p.70]

Bright in style and execution, but imperfect. [Issue#189, p.84]

Tokyo 42 stands as a monument to intricate, beautiful design, and its tense, unpredictable combat is a highlight. But somewhere along the way it forgets to walk in the dirt.

This is not a bad game by any means – although it can be as frustrating as hell – but the amazing world design feels second fiddle to the lacklustre gameplay and it would have been a lot better to focus on the exploration, or even make it an out and out stealth experience.

Whilst some of the gun mechanics don't work as well as they should, there's still lots of missions, customisation, and a cracking electronic soundtrack in the vein of Hotline Miami.

Tokyo 42 is a refreshing take on the action/stealth genre. Although it's definitely rough around the edges in its current state, I hope the developers work on a sequel because this is one memorable and promising gaming experience.

Tokyo 42, despite its faults, is a fun game to play but ultimately feels like a massive missed opportunity.

Tokyo 42 offers a pretty cool city of the future to explore, a beautiful art style and tributes masterpieces of both game industry and film industry with great class, but fails to provide an entertaining experience. The game is too hard in some of its (many) missions because of its stiff camera and its not-so-pleasant way to aim, plus, it has technical problems.

Tokyo 42 has been sold on the strong, vivid visual design of its world, but how player's view it is at the root of the game's biggest faults when it comes to play. The isometric angles and transitions between them often hinder smooth movement and a player's understanding of where they are in the world. When the game comes together as intended, it serves up inventive missions with the thrills to match its obvious influences, but those moments are broken up too frequently by frustrating design choices.

Tokyo 42 quindi merita i nostri soldi? Alla fine dei conti sì, consapevoli che in certi frangenti potrebbe risultare frustrante, ma sicuramente mai noioso.

The rest of it, about being a thrilling strategy/open-world shooter, falls short due to an annoying camera and stilted combat. Having to switch between angles to see where you are and what you're shooting at becomes tiresome, and when under pressure from enemies, downright frustrating. In my opinion, not worth the price tag.
