In the end there’s a reason They Are Billions has received a groundswell of support and appreciation over the past year, and that comes down to it excelling as a defensive RTS experience you’ll come back to time and again. That mission to build up a little town and hold a position on the back of incoming waves of attackers, where unpredictability plays a role and you’re somewhat in charge of the pacing. Because when the horde arrives – they’ll be running.

They Are Billions is a unique and relentlessly tense take on the Civ-Sim and one that will reward any failure with swift and sudden destruction.

Once you get past They Are Billions’ multiple barriers to entry, and start to dig into its complexities for yourself, you’ll discover a fabulously complex and challenging game that’s not afraid to test you. For the right sort of masochist, it’ll be the start of dozens of hours of joyous yet cautious experimentation.

At its best, though, in both the original survival mode, across the bulk of the campaign and in the one-off challenge of the week maps, They Are Billions remains a tight and compelling strategy game. The knowledge that you're always just one misstep away from disaster creates a gripping, tense atmosphere that's unusual for the genre. And the cycle from defense to offense and back again as you progress from one wave to the next offers both well-paced urgency and the ability to set clear short-term goals. It's a smartly designed game at its core, despite the distractions. Just like a lone zombie can bring about your demise, sometimes one strong idea is enough.

They Are Billions are great for mixing two genres like real time strategy and tower defense, but it's also fantastic for its complexity and the hours of fun it offers.

They Are Billions, is a high paced and unforgiving Real Time Strategy, Horror, Tower Defense Game, that keeps you on the edge of your seat. They Are Billions, is a high paced and unforgiving Real Time Strategy, Horror, Tower Defense Game, that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I've never played another RTS quite like this one! From the wonderful comic book feeling animation, and beautifully rendered worlds, to the ever looming feel of dread, They are Billions never lets you out of it's cold iron grasp. Once you've played (and likely died) a few times, you quickly realize that one mistake, or oversight could be your end. Game play itself is straight forward, You need people, and energy to run everything, while keeping everyone fed, and gathering the materials you need to build more, and researching better buildings, and keeping a stock of soldiers for your defensive lines. Just like any good RTS you can easily under-produce nearly anything, keeping you from making the next great structure, so be sure to try and keep everything just above "What you need" and you'll be a bit better off. The slim choices in units and proceduraly generated maps can make early game a bit harsh, especially for newer players. The feeling of dread produced the first time a real Horde attack trudges it's way from the Fog of War is real, they feel like Billions! But that doesn't even scratch the 'Final horde' that comes at the end of days, set by your difficulty. The game is HARD. There is no Tutorial. If you are NEW to RTS style games then this may not be the best choice for you to start on. If you are a fan of the genre, and you are looking for a great challenge, and a high paced system, then look no further! I Highly recommend this game be added to your RTS collection, because it can, and likely will, provide countless hours of intense strategy for those seeking a great challenge! Full Review »
