Amazing game. Great characters, great story and great world. This game is what Fallout games should be. If you like a good RPG and was a fan of Fallout games prior to Fallout 04 and ugh, Fallout 76 this is the game for you. Do yourself a favor and play this game, you won't regret it!

A worthy successor to Fallout: New Vegas. While it is short on content (in one playthrough; making different choices can lead to vastly different outcomes) , this is Obsidian's first attempt at a proper first-person RPG in a long time and does not have a huge budget. Any criticisms I have are nitpicks, and it is almost entirely bug-free.

Fallout Vegas I loved and this is very similar, even graphically. I like the old school design to it. The storylines, side quests, ability skill trees all there and are great. There are little imperfections such as the objective markers which are set on the entry points of areas rather then where you actually need to be but, this is something you get used to and can work round. I have also come accross various clipping issues and the odd missing NPC but these in themselves are infrequent and do nothing to detract from the game itself. Melee feels pretty clean and you do feel you are making a connection onto an enemy rather than swinging wildly. Gunplay is excellent with the variety of weapons and the ability to be able to modify each weapon with add-ons and also to increase the level of each weapon by tinkering. All in all pretty solid so far.

I have managed to complete the game but have given up doing the side quests due to the biggest issue of the game, as mentioned, Loading times. If your a completionist you will find this more of a chore than enjoyable.

When so many of the quests are of the basic go, fetch and collect variety you need to travel back and forth a great deal. Therein lies the almost gamebreaking issue.

Each loading screen lasts for 45 seconds on the Xbox 1x in 4k and then a further 20 seconds. or so, once it has loaded for the map to actually appear or NPC's to to talk to you. Without giving any spoilers away, one simple mission involved me having to travel to an area, fast travel to an area within that area, collect an item (which took 5 seconds) and then return to the ship and then return to the quest giver..thats in excess of 3 minutes waiting for a 5 second job. You will be travelling hundreds of times during the games length so minutes will become hours fairly rapidly. For a game which is not particularly graphically challenged, and in 2019, is this the best we can expect ?

Travelling to new areas is common most games. A long loading time for a complete area is fine if it means no fast travelling loading times within each area and for a game like this would surely have been not the best option but the only option.

If they had thought and fixed this major flaw then this would have been an excellent must have game but for me, completing it was almost a relief due to this one issue and not a game I would return to again unlike Fallout New Vegas.

Controls, graphics, menu design, targeting, weapon design and character advancement are the worst I have ever seen. Gameplay is kinda standard, nothing out of the ordinary. However, I do feel like melee combat is a mess. Maybe I'm just bad at the game, but the melee is not fluid at all and the camera is glitchy a little. Other problem that prevents me from giving this game a 10 is the lack of FPS. I play on XBOX ONE (No money to have a master class pc ya know?) But still, the FPS drops are sometimes annoying. Lastly and this one is purely personal, but I would've loved to have have some romance options with the companions. There was so much potential for a romance feature in this game. I know that it's not game breaker, but after games like, Skyrim (Alright not the best for romance, but still), Mass Effect series, The Witcher and hell even Fallout (at times) I feel like having romance in this game would've been great.

In summary, this game could've been more, and could've been better optimized, but in general is a really well made RPG and brought back good memories of when I was playing the **** out of New Vegas. Would recommend!

Mediocre game that is getting a lot of praise because no recent good RPGs out. Characters and choices are shallow. Systems are very simple and difficulty is incredibly easy. I don’t care about the shorter length of the game as long as it’s good but it’s simply average. This feels like a budget game instead of a deep and an engrossing RPG.

To sum up this game with one word "bland" at no point do you feel cool or powerful just a boring joke character that everyone disrespects constantly. The story is poorly written and simple to follow the companions are all disrespectful towards the player character and there is no option to stand up for yourself you just have to agree with whatever idiotic thing they say. It isn't an RPG so much as it is a shooter on rails you have no choice.

The gameplay itself is inferior to Fallout 4 and Mass effect Andromeda (Yes worse than ME:A) you get about 20 hours of gameplay it tries to copy other games too much and falls flat (Fo4,ME:A,Borderlands)

The companions themselves make me just want to put them in an airlock and blast them into space. You seriously couldn't make a single companion that is likable? Even ME:A did this!

We need to face the facts. The Obsidian that made Fo:NV peaked with this achievement and has been dishing out slop ever since. Obsidian is dead

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Another Fallout type game in space, Im in for $60 im in. I love single player RPG's so i wasn't going to miss this one. I really enjoyed this game, some of the dialog and quest option spectrums were done even better than Bethesda. However they're were some things missing like mysterious quest givers that find you and initiate conversation while you are roaming around or quest givers hidden in a shack off the beaten path. i find complaining about a games length is a little silly because you are stating how much you like the game and how much you wanted to keep going but i would have appreciated getting to see the rest of the planets on the map you have been seeing throughout your playthrough thus judging your own length for the game. Loved it 9/10

Some reasons why The Outer Worlds (TOWs) is a great game.

    - Not a single Obsidian executive lied to promote the game. - Obsidian understands that bugs and glitches aren't funny or "part of the experience". - Obsidian understands that a good story is always better than 16x the detail. - TOWs is an actual RPG where you can actually Role Play. - Obsidian uses a competent engine. -

Love the art style and the ability to play on story mode so I don't have to worry about messing up my character. I can just throw points wherever I want to without worrying about failing. And since the story is suppose to be great in this game from what everyone else has said, that's really all I care about. I have little time for games these days and I love how developers are including this ultra easy mode for those of us with little time, so we can blow through the gameplay and see the story at the same time.

    Here is why:

I was nervous about pre ordering this game (not that it really matters since there is literally no harm no foul for cancelling a pre order and it's only $5)... but my trepidation was from the fact that (surprisingly) not many people I knew had heard of this game in the year leading up to it, but also, I had very high expectations due to the promises of the "throwback rpg" that was supposedly bundled in a "Firefly" type universe. I mean... c'mon! What more could you ask for?

By "throwback rpg," I'm referring to the good ol' days where your decisions ACTUALLY meant something. Your freedom was real and not artificial and not just some marketing promise used to get you to buy the game. I'm talking "old school, dialogue heavy, relationship building, watch your vicarious character's traits/personalities flesh out and evolve right before your eyes based off of your decisions and actions" kind of game.... did that make sense?

So with my high expectations, I couldn't help but feel that I was setting myself up for disappointment... like so many other games that came out in recent years (*cough* Days Gone *cough*). SO MANY GAMES get our hopes up with OVER promising and UNDER-delivering.

Folks, this game delivers on all fronts. True RPG. True to it's promises of decision making/impacting dialogue... OH AND the combat. One thing I didn't hold my breath on (because of past shooting mechanics of the Fallout game) was the... shooting... mechanics. I was doubly prepared for poor shooting because I just came off of Borderlands 3, where the shooting is phenomenal! LOW AND BEHOLD....THE SHOOTING MECHANICS ARE SHOCKINGLY GREAT! Perfect? No. But they hold their own, which just adds to the already superb premise of the game play. It looks like Death Stranding is set up to be a snooze fest and a disappointment (based off of early reviews... even the good reviews state it's boring and extremely frustrating). All I gotta say is thank you "The Outer Worlds" for being the first game in a long time.... maybe ever for keeping ALL OF YOUR PROMISES... AND THEN SOME!!

It’s fantastic. The a real RPG and I’ve missed it so much in the last few Fallout games. Really, it hasn’t felt this good since Bioshock, Mass Effect 2/3 (yeah, I liked 3) and New Vegas and that makes sense.

Great story and nice overall experience with the game. However I did not quite like battle mechanics. It uses fallout engine and that makes it not the best shooter. Basically fallout approach with action points and targeting specific parts of an enemy works a lot better. Here you basically spend most of the time suspension, trying to target at least something with a gamepad. I investedGreat story and nice overall experience with the game. This game isn't without flaws it has them but most of the flaws are very tiny. You can't take a mod off a gun after you've installed it kind of annoying but not world ending. However seeing critics complaining about the size of the world and listing that as a flaw is missing the point as to why a few smaller worlds is better than one large one. I don't fast travel in Outer Worlds very often. In Fallout 3,4 Skyrim I fast traveled ALL the time! You would finish a quest and then the marker would move to the other side of the map. The largest distance I had to cover so far is about 600 meters. Traveling is shorter than the load time of fast traveling (maybe?). Load times are pretty short unlike Fallout Skyrim. I don't even typically like Obsidian's games and I had my doubts about this one but I have been proven wrong. I haven't run into any weird bugs in this game either unlike Fallout Skyrim. It is a great time if you like Fallout Skyrim style games. Expand

An immersive story, a rich and colorful world to explore and no micro transactions to name a few.

There is a place for MMO titles but you do not take a game franchise that has traditionally been single player action adventure RPG, strip out all of the life from the game, monetize everything you can and call it the latest greatest installment. Outer Worlds is what the Fallout Fans wanted. it is so obvious Obsidian gets it. Bethesda is trying to milk the cow for every dollar, quarter, nickle and dime and it is sad. Such a breath of fresh air to get to pick up the sticks and dive into a world, into a character and an adventure with real living, breathing NPCs and making choices that really matter and also have almost unlimited replay-ability. What ever Outer Worlds lacks in length of play through it makes up for with that. Every play through can be totally different and unique again like the old Fallout games were. Remember it was not until recently we got spoiled with the massive open world games and hour and hours of game play content within one play though. In the hay day of RPGs (Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Fallout 3, etc...) if you got 20-30 hours out of a game play that was well worth the $60 price tag. I feel that Outer Worlds is worth every penny. I paid full price for 76 and played it all of maybe 15 hours before I just couldn't anymore and then they marked it down to almost nothing shortly thereafter. That was a ripoff.

I do not know if we will ever see another Fallout title after the terror that has been Fallout 76 but I for one am glad to know Obsidian is back in business and with the money Microsoft can put into their devs I think we, the true Fallout fans, can look forward to this begin a true revival of the Action Adventure RPG and the real #SavePlayerOne campaign.

The beginning guns suck but as I’m getting better weapons I really like how they shoot and some mods are pretty cool. I like that you can have 2 companions at time. I enjoy the humor and the characters. The graphics are amazing and personally I enjoy the semi psychedelic color schemes. I feel like normal mode is too easy, and while hard is tough I enjoy tough battles. I probably won’t get into survival mode as I die enough in hard. I wish it had more auto saves. I just manually save a lot now because it’s annoying when you res pawn 2 loading screens ago. I’m excited to finish this adventure so hope this info helps. I’m rating 10/10 because I do think it’s a really great game, there was no false claims or shady business going on like micro-transactions and other bs, and giving forgiveness on the things I don’t like because I would like to see them high enough rated where they can either hire a bigger team or work with a larger studio in the future. The Outer Worlds is a well-written, novel, gorgeous roleplaying game, made for today using some of yesterday's best tricks. If you fall into the trap of using fast travel it can feel like ticking off to-do list items instead of adventuring. But if you force yourself to slow down and let the sharp dialogue, otherworldly vistas, and intriguing characters work their magic, it's one of the best roleplaying experiences of the last few years.

It’s a familiar template that The Outer Worlds builds itself around, but the depth and wit within its universe invites you ever-deeper. There’s social commentary and late-stage capitalism gallows humour all over the place, but it’s the richness of its imagined future that really holds the attention. [Issue#184, p.84]

As a recent addition to the Microsoft Game Studios family, Obsidian have put their best foot forward with The Outer Worlds. Solid gun play, an engaging story with great, likeable characters and a world that is fun to explore and interact with. Some missions let the side down a little and the game could be bigger but with so many nods to the great RPG predecessors and taking the best elements from them this is a great game to pick up.
