I tried with this game. I really did. I love new vegas and when I saw obsidian made an original IP I was super excited. But this game is just boring. I felt like I was just doing fetch quests all the time. And also the inventory management system is absolutely terrible. I’m glad I got this for free with game pass. Otherwise that would’ve been 60 dollars down the drain

Combat sucks, exploration sucks (literally non existent), enemies suck (there are like 6), loot sucks, dialogue options suck, character creation sucks and is also redundant in a fps, characters are like robots apart from companions and Phineas, and the game just ends in an anti-climax, as if they said **** what do we do now?" Fallout 4 is leagues better as a Bethesda rpg and that had a voiced character and limited dialogue options due to it, but at least that benefitted somewhat story wise. This game doesn't benefit at all from any design choices, its just a plain generic bore. Expand

This is not proper Fallout. Fallout 4, for all its faults, is a much better Fallout game, and Fallout 4 is a pretty bad Fallout game. But even on its own, Outer Worlds is pretty lackluster. The adventure is on rails, stats and consumables don't particularly matter, and the environments are small. There is no point in exploring because you will get a green blip leading you to literally everything in the area eventually.

The game only scores as high as it does with me because it fooled me into thinking there was going to be more for a decent amount of time. There is not more. I paid for a month of Game Pass for this and I am thankful that's all I spent.

That said, leave that anti-SJW nonsense at home. Yes, there is a lesbian, and yes, sometimes a woman will be in charge. If this is a threat to your fragile masculinity, please feel free to recede from modern society and leave the rest of us alone.

I loved New Vegas. The way that game made you feel like you had an impact on the game world right from the first mission was amazingly well done.

This game has none of that. Everything feels like a chore with no consequences of your actions other than a little notice that you treated one faction badly and I guess they don't like you now? I wish I could understand what ppl are so stocked about, I just don't get it...

    - Worlds feel too small. You dezert a company and go hiding and build a new community 400m from your old one? Ok. The settlements are interesting, but the spaces between those are uninteresting.

    - Every position of Power has so far been occupied by a woman and all the males are either whimpering soyboys or idiotic grunts. If I dont find a lore-reason for this Im going to go with SJW-pandering and this alone gets -3 points.

    - Also some people are getting a "anti-capitalist" wipe from this game? Anyone with a brain notices that if you replace "board/company" with "The State" its a full on communism. Again political indoctrination without even being right -1 points.

Look I'm impressed with the lack of budget they were able to make something this solid. But I found myself playing this more like it was doom or something since I didn't really care. I eventually gave up all together once I hit the third world because I was just so bored.

The weird SJW motives forced into the mix on top of this just gross me out. For instance the default character is a black lesbian woman, which I'm sure is the majority or gamers playing their game obviously so it just makes sense for them to try to appeal to that large portion of the market. Not only that but there's this awkward forced in side quest where for 30 minutes you have to assist a lesbian in pursuing her sexual interest.

Fallout Vegas I loved and this is very similar, even graphically. I like the old school design to it. The storylines, side quests, ability skill trees all there and are great. There are little imperfections such as the objective markers which are set on the entry points of areas rather then where you actually need to be but, this is something you get used to and can work round. I have also come accross various clipping issues and the odd missing NPC but these in themselves are infrequent and do nothing to detract from the game itself. Melee feels pretty clean and you do feel you are making a connection onto an enemy rather than swinging wildly. Gunplay is excellent with the variety of weapons and the ability to be able to modify each weapon with add-ons and also to increase the level of each weapon by tinkering. All in all pretty solid so far.

I have managed to complete the game but have given up doing the side quests due to the biggest issue of the game, as mentioned, Loading times. If your a completionist you will find this more of a chore than enjoyable.

When so many of the quests are of the basic go, fetch and collect variety you need to travel back and forth a great deal. Therein lies the almost gamebreaking issue.

Each loading screen lasts for 45 seconds on the Xbox 1x in 4k and then a further 20 seconds. or so, once it has loaded for the map to actually appear or NPC's to to talk to you. Without giving any spoilers away, one simple mission involved me having to travel to an area, fast travel to an area within that area, collect an item (which took 5 seconds) and then return to the ship and then return to the quest giver..thats in excess of 3 minutes waiting for a 5 second job. You will be travelling hundreds of times during the games length so minutes will become hours fairly rapidly. For a game which is not particularly graphically challenged, and in 2019, is this the best we can expect ?

Travelling to new areas is common most games. A long loading time for a complete area is fine if it means no fast travelling loading times within each area and for a game like this would surely have been not the best option but the only option.

If they had thought and fixed this major flaw then this would have been an excellent must have game but for me, completing it was almost a relief due to this one issue and not a game I would return to again unlike Fallout New Vegas.

The gameplay itself is inferior to Fallout 4 and Mass effect Andromeda (Yes worse than ME:A) you get about 20 hours of gameplay it tries to copy other games too much and falls flat (Fo4,ME:A,Borderlands)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Outer Worlds is among the most uninspired games to come out in the 2010's. After 38 hours of playing and dealing with the drivel that is this game's forgettable main and side quests, I can certainly say that this game is but a soulless husk of a game that can only be described as nothing more than mediocre. The story centers around reviving the colonists of The Hope, which you were amongst before being revived. After being released into Edgewater you are shown the lackluster speech checks which will often be at values spanning from 1-60. Yes, there are checks at the value of 1. Apart from just maxing out the skills to get the bonuses there is little reason to actually max out any of the speech skills, I had 100+ persuasion from companion perks (base of 68) and not once did I ever see any speech options that exceeded 60.

While traveling through Edgewater you get a taste of the poor excuse of the corporate dystopia the game is trying to have a satirical take on, but every time it devolves into "corporations are stupid." The game beats you over the head constantly with this "joke" that it started making me question just how a revolt hadn't happened yet, after what, ~50 years, no one had actually tried to over throw the board? The game seriously believes that I'll accept that there isn't any noticable unrest? But anyways we were talking about Edgewater, which is a small town that is dying out due to starvation, malnutrition, and a plague. Nearly all these issues wouldn't be a thing if it wasn't built upon volcanic rock. Because volcanos are a great place to settle down next to.

At Edgewater you're given the task to find a power source for your ship, which you can find two of, one at Edgewater and the other at a botanical garden. But because player freedom is nigh non-existent you are railroaded into doing a quest to reroute power from one settlement to the other. Only afterwards you can actually take the drained town's power source.

Edgewater is generally considered the best part of the game due to it having choices between factions and being a fairly balanced location. Afterwards however you will only find one other location with any similar depth, that being Monarch, and it's completely optional.

Apart from Edgewater and Monarch the other locations are fairly lackluster. There is Scylla which is just a failed terraforming location filled with annoying primals to fight and nothing else. The section of Terra 2 with the Auntie Cleo's research settlement is an optional location where you can obtain some science projects to sell for money and not much else. The Groundbreaker is a colorful place full of stores and has a couple of quests that'll have you do some running around and not much else. You can betray Dr. Weales here as well, but other than the prospect of bits (the game's currency) there is no reason that anyone would do it other than out of curiosity. Though the corpo side of TOW is much the same as the normal side of the story. You are also able to do some quests for a psychopath who is the CEO of a salvage network who sends you to murder an innocent woman who is trying to save the entire colony from starvation, and the game can railroad you into murdering her as even if you allow the woman to live her guards will attack you and she, for some stupid reason, will attack you completely negating your choice in the matter.

The only other location you can explore is Byzantium, which is where a then rich live and everything you do here, be it sneaking through, or going in guns blazing and executing everyone in the streets and the colony's minister, will have no consequences. You can commit political assassination and terrorism and nothing will happen. No matter how awful you act towards the board you will never actually be harrassed by them and apart from increased prices from vendors and guards attacking you there is no reason to even be worried about having low reputation with the various factions unless it is something like MSI or the Iconaclasts if you want to deal with their fued on Monarch.

The game then finishes with a Fallout style slide show where nearly all the slides depend on who you chose to ally with and makes nearly no mention of the many choices you made throughout the game apart from the fates of companions, Edgewater's fate, and the fate of MSI and the Iconaclasts. Only 3 choices dictate nearly all the slides in the ending.

In conclusion The Outer Worlds is a soulless game with conflicting messages from how the game acts. The game focuses on dialogue, but ends with a shoot out. Only three of your choices matter in the ending, but none of them actually affect the world while you play it. With a price tag of $60 you would be better off spending your money on a game that is more deserving and worth your time. Mayhap when the DLC is released the game will actually amount to something, but a game shouldn't rely on its DLC to actually be good.

The Outer Worlds is a well-written, novel, gorgeous roleplaying game, made for today using some of yesterday's best tricks. If you fall into the trap of using fast travel it can feel like ticking off to-do list items instead of adventuring. But if you force yourself to slow down and let the sharp dialogue, otherworldly vistas, and intriguing characters work their magic, it's one of the best roleplaying experiences of the last few years.

It’s a familiar template that The Outer Worlds builds itself around, but the depth and wit within its universe invites you ever-deeper. There’s social commentary and late-stage capitalism gallows humour all over the place, but it’s the richness of its imagined future that really holds the attention. [Issue#184, p.84]

As a recent addition to the Microsoft Game Studios family, Obsidian have put their best foot forward with The Outer Worlds. Solid gun play, an engaging story with great, likeable characters and a world that is fun to explore and interact with. Some missions let the side down a little and the game could be bigger but with so many nods to the great RPG predecessors and taking the best elements from them this is a great game to pick up.
