Was never a fan of Fallout, but i did not know the same guys made this game.
Overall i thought it started out ok. But i lost complete interest in it. The characters, dialogue and action felt boring after a while.
In the end i just run and gun and did fetch quest as fast as i could. It never pulled me in proper.

Rarely an RPG. So full of unlikable characters, all with the same agenda. Also the sense of exploration is laughable compared to New Vegas. The FPS combat isn't very compelling either, this also goes for melee combat. Overall I guess the biggest issue is just how budget everything feels. Some aspects of the game were quite annoying as you were expected to have a certain amount of items so you can unlock an important door but that means you have to spend to grinding for those items. The open worlds were quite exciting in the game but it would have been better if all of them were fully developed as some where quite small. The best world was the dangerous dinosaur world as it has a lot of stuff to do in it. The fortress at the end is fun to takeover but further highlights how a lot of the enemies feel the same. The loot system was alright in terms of weapons but annoying in terms of collecting items and equipment. The levelling up system was done well. Expand

    A soild 7/10.

A flawed but competent action RPG.

Pros: art style, writing, music, vicar max.
Cons: woke narrative, features not working, excessive loading, linear and boring characters.

But the main reason for the highest mark is the real presence of the gamer's choice, there is no fraction and nobody you are obliged to deal with. You may do everything absolutely your way, I guess this is second game I've played with such an ability, after Fallout NV.
Reputation, companions, personal characteristics development, and other RPG features are working perfectly in this game.
This game is a real RPG thrill, and it doesn't have any other competitors in this genre nowadays.
    Thus, certainly 10/10.

If you are a fan of Sci Fi RPGs, definitely give this one a go just for the awesome world and atmosphere it has.

-Story- Good, but not the most memorable
-Gameplay- Decent, not broken, but simple, boring and outdated)
-Visual- This is the game's strong suit. It looks amazing and it feels otherworldly
-Audio- Sound is pretty good and the music, in it's minimalist style, also feels good.

I played it as a libertarian freedom fighter who resented the tyrannical status quo and violently opposed any big government oppressors. I probably killed a lot of people I could have interacted with. There was an entire town in the beginning that I deemed to be communist so I killed their commie leader after stealing their power for hippie farmers. The whole town just hated me and I was kill on site for the rest of the game, but there was so much else to do I didn't care. Still made plenty of allies and had a funny and fun violent romp to be the freedom champion of future space. I hope the sequel gets more budget and enemy variety, those would be my only suggestions to add to this near perfect game Expand

The outer worlds looks fantastic, runs smooth as silk (on PS4 Pro) and is rich in detail, content, character development options, customisation and combat. It is everything you could possibly hope this genre of video game would be and a ton load more added in just as a bonus - out of the collective goodness of Obsidian's heart.

This gem! From the creator of the fan favourite Fallout New Vegas, Obsidian is once again showing Bethesda how it's REALLY done - (to the point of dishing out a huge dose of abject humiliation in the process in this particular case)

Compare The Outer Worlds to the broken mess that was and still is Fallout 76, with its over priced micro transactions and utterly disgraceful, borderline criminal (imo) Subscription "Service." Bethesda (probably being forced to by its owner Zenimax to do so) have turned their sheer greed and audacity up to 11 and have just gone straight for the "desperate cash grab" strategy aimed directly (and ruthlessly) at the few players that actually stuck with their half finished rubbish. That's what fan loyalty got them! Nice!

Anyway, compare that dumpster fire atrocity of a game with this. Night and Day only begins to illustrate the point.

That said, we do now have to anxiously wait to see if Take 2 interactive decides to introduce micro transactions into the outer worlds and break all of our hearts in doing so. Please T2I. Just Nooooo!

    TLTR:

1 Good game by a good developer = buy 2 Bad game by a bad developer = leave to others to buy

    The Outer Worlds = 1. Fallout 76 = 2

Expand

The criticisms include inventory management, picking up so many weapons that they lose their charm and the well designed companions all being converted to ugly robot looking people in order to gain the armour stats.

This game won't set the world on fire with its originality, but I have very much enjoyed playing it. It can get a bit repetitive, and it also can be quite dialogue-heavy (depending of course on which choices you make in the dialogue). This was the primary reason why when nearing the end of the game I gave up on all side quests and rushed through the main story. I think the game could have done with less level scaling with weapons and armour and more customisation of these things.

The worlds in this game are well made, interesting and all different enough from one another to stay fresh.

The story was good enough to keep my attention for the duration of the game and the characters were well written, all differing from each other.

The game poses you with some interesting moral dilemmas, these are done better than your average RPG but not as good as Fallout New Vegas. But I would still consider this area to be one of the strengths to the game.

Overall I think this game could have been an excellent RPG but is let down by its combat systems in the end.

The Outer Worlds is almost the Fallout sequel I was expecting, but mixed with a bit of Borderlands and a bit more of Star Wars.
And that alone is already amazing!

All of your common Western RPG elements are here, done in the best way possible. It's a VERY familiar game, ESPECIALLY if you've played Fallout 3 or New Vegas.
The graphics are cute, the performance is good (albeit a few hiccups), the quests are entertaining, the shooting mechanics works fine and the progression system functions like it should.
But the thing that makes this conventional game shine among its peers is the writing!
The story is great! It won't blow your mind, but it will convince you!
I got invested in my character, in my crew, in the colony, the state of each world, each long and short quest, the role I played in the tale and in the witty dialogue. Just talking with people and deciding my lines got me super pumped because it's all so clever and very well done. The Outer Worlds has this magic that made me care for the things I said, did and its consequences. Few games like that made me feel this way, while still making me laugh.

The game isn't roses all the way through, though.
Despite its amazing storytelling, the ending is abrupt and anticlimatic. I liked what was written in the aftermath, but it was poorly handled.
Some parts of the gameplay felt dated. For example, melee combat is suicidal and impractical. MANY items you pick are useless and VERY repetitive. After a while, looting becomes boring and unnecessary, especially once you get to higher levels or close to the endgame.
And I get that the game is a FPS, but then... what's the use of creating and decorating your charachter?
Also, **** Monarch! That place is dull as hell!

I totally recommend this game, but I can see why people wouldn't think much of it. I loved it and I think you should try. That might scratch your Fallout itch for a while, at least...

Mediocre game that is getting a lot of praise because no recent good RPGs out. Characters and choices are shallow. Systems are very simple and difficulty is incredibly easy. I don’t care about the shorter length of the game as long as it’s good but it’s simply average. This feels like a budget game instead of a deep and an engrossing RPG.

I pray for a sequel

Great, well made game. It had many great elements of a good RPG. The problem wasn’t really in the game, it was more or less in the length, and general lack of side quests. While there were a good amount of them, one could probably finish them all within a days time, same with the main quest. It was all generally short and no real amount of long lasting fun. Very good game, compares very favorably to the Fallout series. I found the shooting to be more satisfying, and the environments more vibrant, and it had the same snarky sense of humor. My one main criticism is that the ending seems to come out of nowhere, and once you finish, that's it for that version of the game, you cannot explore anymore afterwards

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Outer Worlds is among the most uninspired games to come out in the 2010's. After 38 hours of playing and dealing with the drivel that is this game's forgettable main and side quests, I can certainly say that this game is but a soulless husk of a game that can only be described as nothing more than mediocre. The story centers around reviving the colonists of The Hope, which you were amongst before being revived. After being released into Edgewater you are shown the lackluster speech checks which will often be at values spanning from 1-60. Yes, there are checks at the value of 1. Apart from just maxing out the skills to get the bonuses there is little reason to actually max out any of the speech skills, I had 100+ persuasion from companion perks (base of 68) and not once did I ever see any speech options that exceeded 60.

While traveling through Edgewater you get a taste of the poor excuse of the corporate dystopia the game is trying to have a satirical take on, but every time it devolves into "corporations are stupid." The game beats you over the head constantly with this "joke" that it started making me question just how a revolt hadn't happened yet, after what, ~50 years, no one had actually tried to over throw the board? The game seriously believes that I'll accept that there isn't any noticable unrest? But anyways we were talking about Edgewater, which is a small town that is dying out due to starvation, malnutrition, and a plague. Nearly all these issues wouldn't be a thing if it wasn't built upon volcanic rock. Because volcanos are a great place to settle down next to.

At Edgewater you're given the task to find a power source for your ship, which you can find two of, one at Edgewater and the other at a botanical garden. But because player freedom is nigh non-existent you are railroaded into doing a quest to reroute power from one settlement to the other. Only afterwards you can actually take the drained town's power source.

Edgewater is generally considered the best part of the game due to it having choices between factions and being a fairly balanced location. Afterwards however you will only find one other location with any similar depth, that being Monarch, and it's completely optional.

Apart from Edgewater and Monarch the other locations are fairly lackluster. There is Scylla which is just a failed terraforming location filled with annoying primals to fight and nothing else. The section of Terra 2 with the Auntie Cleo's research settlement is an optional location where you can obtain some science projects to sell for money and not much else. The Groundbreaker is a colorful place full of stores and has a couple of quests that'll have you do some running around and not much else. You can betray Dr. Weales here as well, but other than the prospect of bits (the game's currency) there is no reason that anyone would do it other than out of curiosity. Though the corpo side of TOW is much the same as the normal side of the story. You are also able to do some quests for a psychopath who is the CEO of a salvage network who sends you to murder an innocent woman who is trying to save the entire colony from starvation, and the game can railroad you into murdering her as even if you allow the woman to live her guards will attack you and she, for some stupid reason, will attack you completely negating your choice in the matter.

The only other location you can explore is Byzantium, which is where a then rich live and everything you do here, be it sneaking through, or going in guns blazing and executing everyone in the streets and the colony's minister, will have no consequences. You can commit political assassination and terrorism and nothing will happen. No matter how awful you act towards the board you will never actually be harrassed by them and apart from increased prices from vendors and guards attacking you there is no reason to even be worried about having low reputation with the various factions unless it is something like MSI or the Iconaclasts if you want to deal with their fued on Monarch.

The game then finishes with a Fallout style slide show where nearly all the slides depend on who you chose to ally with and makes nearly no mention of the many choices you made throughout the game apart from the fates of companions, Edgewater's fate, and the fate of MSI and the Iconaclasts. Only 3 choices dictate nearly all the slides in the ending.

In conclusion The Outer Worlds is a soulless game with conflicting messages from how the game acts. The game focuses on dialogue, but ends with a shoot out. Only three of your choices matter in the ending, but none of them actually affect the world while you play it. With a price tag of $60 you would be better off spending your money on a game that is more deserving and worth your time. Mayhap when the DLC is released the game will actually amount to something, but a game shouldn't rely on its DLC to actually be good.

The outer worlds is a companion based rpb from some of the team that worked on fallout new vegas, and as you could guess, The Outerworlds feels like a fallout meat mass effect game…
Here you play as your own created character, who is awoken after over 70 years and given a task that of course leads to more tasks so you can eventually save whatever it is you want to save… the world/worls are your oyster.. you get to play this game and be any type of character you want.. you can even play as as character that just doesn’t care.. and that was me…
Dont get me wrong.. The Outer Worlds has potential to suck you in, its beautiful, its full of life if you care to seek it, there are multiple locations much like a mass effect game, side quest, companion quests and companions to unlock… but only for a certain type of player which is the outer worlds biggest fault…
The outerworlds has a little something for everyone as the cool kids on the internet would say.. its just that if youre that someone into politics and space, youre going to get a lot more out of this game than someone that’s into narrative or adventure like I am… thanlfully the outerworlds offers such a bite sized rpg experience that even if you are bored of the world and its characters, it not too much of an investment to see this story out.. it only took me 10 hours..
10 hours that I started out really loving, the colours, the addictive leveling and weapon finding.. the skill trees.. all the things that made me addictive to the likes of skyrim or the witcher more so than even mass effect… I was more invested in finding the best armour and weapons here… I felt as if they mattered.. especially as the game has no issue throwing you into situations where you could be underpowered…the intrigue of this worlds design is what pulled me through.. wanting to see whats around the next corner.. sadly this quite great experience where I felt like everything was in my hnd and I had to chose sides carfully, and hcose how I approach things carefully quickly turned into a grey and boring lecture of right and and wrong and I had to try my hardest not to fall asleep.. .i just coldnt care.. no matter how hard I tried, once the outerworlds ditched the colorful mystery and threw me into grey cities and buildings that ive seen a thousand times in the past decade of video games, I started just going through the motions, not really caring about the story or the world anymore, not caring about outcomes or why I was doing what… id just start clicking trough dialog, whatever it took for me to get to the end. .hoping that maybe.. just maybe some colour and intrigue would come back.. .a las it didn’t.. but that’s okay.. cause I found the gameplay to be good enough on its own to merit my playthrough…
Ive hear others complain about gunplay, but I found it to be just fine and theres a decent variety of weapons types, so I even in the final mission, I still felt there were more weapons to find and play around with, and I enjoyed playing with my skills and developing my character around my playstyle.. carefully selecting to boost my combat skills, or my speaking skills as some dialog options will let you jsut skip over a little side quest with instant problem solving… allow you to fish some information out of an npc about an item you need… the outer worlds shows promise, this is a well polished game with great mechanics, especially one that notices character flaws in you as you play… such as developing phobias, when the game detects one youre able to accept this flaw which negatively effects your stats for certain situations, but the trade off is a perk point, the game is constantly smacking you with dilemas, I just wish there was a world and characters that I cared enough about to invest more time into.. to get to really explore these mechanics to their fullest
    I give The Out Worlds
    a 7/10

Shame about that really.

    Pros-
The perfect game to play during a Covid-19 lockdown (to the stars, Jack!)
    Dialogue/speech trees are neat
Timescale and lighting makes cities look nice
    Audio and voice acting
Plasma weapons are heaps of fun
Plenty of side quests to hunt down
Bug free experience (which is new for Obsidian!)
Story conclusion wraps everything up nicely
The game length doesn't overstay its welcome

    Cons-
    Very long load times
Lacked the epic space feel that other games have done
Role play had little impact other than some speech checks
Poor AI that has marauders just waiting on the spot
    Lack of variety in enemies
Lack of challenge as the companions just mow down everything
No grenades or mines for the player to use
Needs more random dungeons to explore
Non gender characters are the death of gaming
    Lesbians and cakes.......really?
Too many containers and ammo drops (and not enough good items in there)
Frame rate slow down on Xbox

The game did very few things wrong but also didn't achieve anything outstanding either. It played out more as a old school RPG, a cross between Mass Effect, Borderlands and a bit of Dishonored artwork thrown in.

Game Content- 7 out of ten
Fun Factor- 8 out of ten

    Overall rating- 7.5

What TOW does well, it does quite well indeed but there is too much dragging the game down to really give it much higher than a 7 out of 10.

There is a good sense of intrigue in the first 5 hours or so but that soon dissapates as the quests become samey and frankly the game just never challenges you enough on the default difficulty for anything to really seem too frantic or important.

Early on in the game my character and companions were so overpowered that nothing really seemed too much of consequence. At one point I managed to aggravate the biggest faction in the biggest city in the game to the point where they started shooting on site. In something else this would be deadly or something I'd have to work around but I simply slaughtered everything in my path and robbed the shops of whoever was dumb enough to shoot at me. The basic grunts are cannon fodder very early on and even by the mid point the biggest versions of the creatures you face are merely an irritation than a threat.

There is also little in the way of value to weapons and armor. There is no kIller weapon to find here. There are unique weapons but they don't really offer much more than the regular ones. In fact I used basically the same basic rifle for most of the game and with a few cheap upgrades it was slaughtering basically everything in my path. My companions, similarly given upgraded weapons, were also easily transformed into killing machines. As such nothing really threatened to kill me from start to finish unless I really wasn't paying attention.

I do like a lot about this game. It has a solid, inventive idea for a story. Its dialogue is at times very funny and well fleshed out. There is a genuine sense of exploration and adventure in the beginning of the game where the visual design really gets across you being a stranger in a strange land. But by hour 10 you realize most of the planets are quite similar and nothing can really hurt you in any of them. I frequently didn't allocate skill points when I levelled up because I felt too overpowered. I rarely used the time slow down because I didn't need to. I rarely healed because nothing really hurt me enough to need to.

The biggest problem it really has is its simplicity. You don't really need to know anything about the game mechanics to be unstoppable in this game. You just equip the highest damage weapon, the high defense rated armour and you waltz through the game killing anything dumb enough to attack you. As such the dialogue choices become less weighted because you know really if the worst came to worst you could just slaughter the entire city with minimal effort.

So it isn't a deep dive RPG, that isn't the end of the world. The plot carries this game most of the way but the abrupt ending after around 24 hours for me (with a fair amount of side plot work in there too) just seemed to suggest that they had a good basis for a game but couldn't quite turn it into something special. There is nothing wrong with what is here. It entertained me for the time I played it, the plot intrigued me enough to finish it but at the end of the story you start to wonder really how much difference anything you did made. |n my ending nobody really died because of what I did, nothing really unexpected occurred because of my choices.

Also with the wide amount of backtracking and moving to and from planets that the game has you doing you find yourself spending a lot of time looking at loading screens that seem a bit longer than you would expect from this modern generation of gaming. You can receive a quest from point a that need you to go through a loading screen to get onto your ship and travel to point b, then a loading screen to get off the ship and onto point b. Once at point b you need to go into a building that requires another loading screen to get in/out of. Once over you have another 2 loads to travel back to turn it in. It loads far too often and for too long.

Ultimately TOW never really delivers on its initial promise. The world map at first glance seems expansive and deep but most planets are just small maps that do not vary a great deal. The great amount of choices you have to make adds intrigue but you realize long before you finish that they aren't making a massive difference to the game world. Yeah there are unique weapons in the world but do you really need it when your run of the mill rifle is slaying everything with ease? Do you really need to allocate all of those perks you've unlocked when nothing is challenging you anyway?

By the time it suddenly ends you're left with a sense that this could have been much more than it was. It just never really grows from there is any way; it never gets any tougher and the decisions don't have any more consequence. It's worthy of your time and I would imagine you will enjoy your time with it but ultimately it feels like a little bit of a letdown from the initial experience of the first few hours of playing.

Hopefully this becomes an IP that Obsidian can run with and make into something fantastic, I'd love to see some story DLC or even sequels set in the same universe. Perhaps with romance options? Come on Obsidian you know you want to.

With companions I'd say Parvati certainly takes the cake as the most memorable with Vicor Max coming in a close second.

I'd say one of the strongest aspects of The Outer Worlds is the sheer replayability of it all, do you want to be a loyal corporatist of the Board? You can do that. A revolutionist fighting to help people receive their freedom and independence? 100% do-able. One of my most enjoyable playthroughs was as a bloodthirsty sociopath named Grog whom simply doomed the entire galaxy by murdering everyone he came across. The beauty is you can do all of these things, Obsidian went out of their way to design a game truly tailored to the choices of the player allowing them to tell their own story.

Is the Outer Worlds perfect? Absolutely not, but the things it does right are so fundamentally brilliant that I can't wait to see what Obsidian has for us next now with the full backing of Microsoft behind them.

The sheer beauty of the world around you is striking. These graphics are immaculate and it is clear the designers put immense effort into making the game near perfect visually. I never experienced any major bugs or crashes while playing. The game is incredibly polished, an obvious plus over the inevitable comparison to Bethesda (and even Bioware) games. In contrast to the rest of the videogame world, there are no microtransactions or pay-to-win content. The game you got on launch day is complete and ready for the consumer.

The sheer number of options for resolving each quest line is commendable, as well as the ability to shape the world around you with the ability to attack or even kill nearly every NPC in the game (with consequences). The backstory for the world itself is unique and interesting, while the use of turn of the century visuals and terminology was a great nod to that era in US history. While the resolution to the game is not perfect, your decisions have real impact on the game's later quests as well as the variety of character/faction endings. In addition, the stakes of your storyline feel real and dire compared to the more personal main quests of Bethesda's Fallout games.

The combat was very enjoyable. Compared to similar first and third person RPGs, the Outer Worlds combat felt less tacked on and more of an important aspect of the story.

Weapons and armor level editing, modifying, and scrapping were also a strong positive. As well as the limiting of the amount of junk/interactable items compared to the Fallout series.

While the side characters are not perfect or incredibly memorable, they all feel believable and were portrayed by solid voice actors. Your options to interact with them are diverse, but more impressive is their ability to interact with each other. No matter which two companions you bring with you, they will interact with the NPCs and one another in unique ways that add to the story and impact your experience.

However, the game had some shortcomings. Primarily, the limited amount of content. This could be a plus to some who desire a more streamlined story. Personally, I felt the game lacked more meaningful side quests and begged for some additional storylines.

The physical worlds of the Outer Worlds feel small and limited after only a few hours. Planets and regions needed more diverse fauna, enemies, buildings and NPCs to round out each region as having a unique experience. Several areas on the map were littered with fake doors of fake buildings that progressively made the worlds feel smaller and smaller.

Skills did not feel significant other then for a few speech checks while special abilities/perks do not feel robust or very important. In addition, the Attributes, Skills, method of healing, use of consumables, weapon types, time slow down, humor and general spirit of the game all feels unoriginal and borrowed from the creators' previous experience in Fallout.

The general story is a bit on the overly simplistic side, with the comically evil corporation seeming too forced. For narrative purposes I would have preferred a more realistic, pragmatic, profit-driven company and the alternative "good" faction to have a larger downside or more moral ambiguity.

Generally, the Outer Worlds feels like a fun, far more polished and launch ready Fallout game (specifically New Vegas) with pieces of Mass Effect, the Firefly TV series and Bioshock for good measure. I enjoyed the hours I put into the game, but did not feel it innovates or takes many substantial risks.

Okay! This game is pretty good. However you get too OP too early which kind of takes away some of the fun for me. I would've given this game a better score if it wasn't for these issues:

    - Too long load times. Even on an Xbox One X (W/12 GB ram) has insane loading times between the ship and other areas. - I repeat: So, if you need to change a crewmate, you have to fast travel to ship

    - When you get a bit out in the game, some quests require you to travel quite a few places, and again.. loading times!!!! It just gets too much.

Perhaps investing in an exernal SSD for the X could be a possibility??

Other than that, I do think the game is pretty good, but not up there with the Fallout serie. I wish for a sequel with even bigger maps, more creatures and shorter loading times

I felt like I was just doing fetch quests all the time. And also the inventory management system is absolutely terrible. I’m glad I got this for free with game pass. All my decisions made impacted and unlocked extra dialogue. Exploration also allowed for new cues to open up in conversation. The ending felt like it could have used a little more work. Felt rushed once I had completed all the companion and faction quests and once the big reveal of the Boards Plan came to fruition. I still managed a 40 hour play through so well worth the price of admission aswell as even better value on the game pass for xbox.
    Gameplay: 3/3
There were a lot of different ways to tackle combat. I did like the intimidation system that cowered your opponents when you get stronger. Felt like the degree of difficulty in this game goes down once you reach level 15 or higher (I played on Hard difficulty, probably could have gone up a dial, however for a first play through I wasn't dissapointed) by then you have unlocked a lot of skillspoints and perks. Some of the perks seemed far too imbalanced and builds at time felt cookie cutter, however I was able to play how I wanted to as a pistol slinging hooligan. The party choices were fun too, as I found myself taking a new party to most missions and none of them seemed out of place or underpowered. Gun play felt nice, much better than Fallout. The modifications were also interesting and not boring when it came to gearing out your team. Sound: 1/2
The general sound of guns were so-so. I felt some were far better than others. The machine guns and the shot guns sounded really meaty. The grenade launchers, sniper (long guns) and pistols felt like they could have been a bit better however the voice acting was fantastic. Parvati and Ellie were two of my favourites. General background sounds were good, but nothing special. The steampunk sounds used were quite good aswell.
    Art Design 1.5/2
Bright colours, wasteland vibes and coorperate city feel in Byzantium were all nailed. It made me feel like I was in the "Outer Worlds" with such unique and vibrant settings that also made you feel like you were alone and empty. As you progressed on maps more opened up showing the progress you were making. The HUD was good, simple but effective however the Map system was a bit frustrating.

I would highly recommend this game to anyone who wants a fallout fix without putting themselves through Fallout 76..

Excellent game that is just the right length. The quests were fun and not grindy like most games. The postal service quest was particularly funny. It was nice that many of the quest choices overlapped and the devs actually made them work well together letting you play different styles.

There weren't really a lot of different enemy types but since the areas weren't huge this was OK.

There weren't really a lot of different enemy types but since the areas weren't huge this was OK. Later in the game you were a god anyway even against bosses. But there isn't a lot of depth to the combat either. You either stealth kill someone, run past them or just start shooting at each other until somebody dies.

The leveling system is OK and it is good that you max out close to the end of the game rather than the middle like other games. The flaws were an interesting concept but they weren't really worth the cost. The perks that are available are mostly useless so taking a flaw to get a perk point when you don't really need any perks is pointless. If the perks would have been useful then this could have been a great system.

The NPC interactions were great and covered a lot of topics. Unfortunately the companions were pretty much set in stone and nothing you did would impact them or their quests beyond some conversations. But that is OK because it still worked.

One of the biggest complaints I have against the game is the need to map out exactly what you need to do in order to unlock all the achievements. If you aren't careful you can end up having to play through multiple times because you missed some random option earlier in the game. Checklists for achievements is never a good thing.

I'm also a little frustrated with the difficulty balancing. There is easy and hard and not much in between. Trying to play through supernova now and it is brutal. Forced survival aspects on top of enemies who (early on) kill with a couple of hits but take a massive amount of damage in return makes playing "any style" difficult. You basically either need to run past everything or become a tank. Since points are spread thin you can't do both. It would have been nice if there was some more balancing in the middle difficulty range and/or letting supernova have some options you could turn off. I personally hate survival mechanics so combining this with running everywhere is just not that fun.

Overall you can clearly see Fallout in this game from the outfits being worn to the TTD. There aren't mutants and the world is overly colored but the scenes of destruction are still there. This is a really good game and I'm glad they are making some DLC. I just hope they increase the level cap or something so the DLC is worth more than just the story.

This game’s story is pretty good, but I mainly rate this 9/10 because of the fact that this is a true successor to Fallout 3, a game that I love. It has the same charm and everything. The only reason it’s a 9 and not a 10 is because the gameplay is slightly wonky. However, it’s easy to become accustomed to it, and I fully recommend this game.

The Outer Worlds is exactly what I was searching for in an action adventure game with bonafide RPG elements.

The game goes for a retro-futurist aesthetic, akin to the BioShock games. Obsidian have done a fantastic job of creating truly unique, vibrant and beautiful worlds that feel both ethereal and hostile. Everything from the foliage, to the building facades, to the wild creatures that roam the land are all exceptionally designed. Although the maps are not nearly as large as other open-world sandbox games, The Outer Worlds counteracts this by creating an optimized and streamlined gameplay experience that removes tedious commuting; the worlds feel as large as the need to be as oppose to being larger for the sake of "openess'.

The RPG elements are well done and a refreshing change from other games that, in practice, only have surface level RPG elements. Specing into different attributes and acquiring character upgrades are easy enough to understand but can have far reaching consequences during gameplay. It can be the difference between being able to talk yourself out of a difficult situation vs. dealing with a confrontation/combat with enemies.

Your choices actually matter in The Outer Worlds as entire missions, quest lines and achievements can be locked off depending on the decisions you make in game. Choices can also affect your standing with certain factions and your status within those factions can also have gameplay altering affects, such as being willing to help you on missions or obtaining quest items more easily and efficiently.

The game's combat works well enough. You get a variety of both ranged (handguns, light and heavy weapons) and melee weapons, as well as weapon effects and mods. You'll come across some bullet-spongy enemies that can be a pain in the ass to take down. The enemy variety is fairly sparse; you'll mostly be fighting marauders and wild creatures, of which there are a little over half a dozen types. The "Time Dilation" mechanic is one that I didn't get a whole lot of use out of and left me wanting more of what Fallout's "VATS" mechanic offered. Even after specing into it, I found the the meter drained far too quickly. I was basically able to get off maybe 2-3 shots, while standing still, before it drained completely. If you're moving an you engage the "Time Dilation" mechanic, good luck get more than one shot with a gun and any hit with a melee weapon.

The NPC companion characterization is well-executed. You get a real sense of each companion's personality and what drives them on a daily basis. Some come across as more bubbly and optimistic, others come across as more determined and serious.

The game runs smoothly, even on a vanilla Xbox One and I've encountered virtually no bugs.

Overall, The Outer Worlds serves as welcomed and refreshing addition to the action RPG genre. I managed to log about 32 hours of gameplay out of it in one play through and found it thoroughly enjoyable. Full recommendation!

I very much hope that there will be a 2 part in which developers will have their hands unleashed and they will be able to make a masterpiece. They have their own unique abilities for combat that shows a cut-scene when you activate it.

For me the games art style, story, and characters seem extremely boring and forgettable. The art style is extremely bland and its seems to want to copy Fallout's art style instead of creating its own. I know that the developers over at Obsidian created some of the first Fallout games but why not create your own setting instead of attempting to somewhat replicate your old setting?
The story consists of uninteresting factions that you really have no trouble making friends with. Every company in the game is almost the same and they really missed out on making the non-company factions (Iconoclasts, Groundbreaker, and Sublight) more unique.

The characters and story bored me so much I struggled so much to just finish this game. I cant say this game is bad even with all of my complaints just because of how deep the dialogue system is and the branching quest-line.

If you are thinking about getting this game I highly recommend getting it on the Xbox Game Pass which is only 15$ per month and on both Xbox and PC. If you don't like it, you have hundreds of other games you can try out.

The Outer Worlds is a well-written, novel, gorgeous roleplaying game, made for today using some of yesterday's best tricks. If you fall into the trap of using fast travel it can feel like ticking off to-do list items instead of adventuring. But if you force yourself to slow down and let the sharp dialogue, otherworldly vistas, and intriguing characters work their magic, it's one of the best roleplaying experiences of the last few years.

As a recent addition to the Microsoft Game Studios family, Obsidian have put their best foot forward with The Outer Worlds. Solid gun play, an engaging story with great, likeable characters and a world that is fun to explore and interact with. Some missions let the side down a little and the game could be bigger but with so many nods to the great RPG predecessors and taking the best elements from them this is a great game to pick up.
