Even if you're not a RPG fan, but more of a shooter fan, go get this. With the witty dialogue, great story, and AMAZING character building, this game is like interacting-with-a-new-favorite-television-series-you-can't-stop-watching-and-thank-the-heavens-that-it's-released-on-Netflix-so-you-can-binge-watch-it.

    Here is why:

I was nervous about pre ordering this game (not that it really matters since there is literally no harm no foul for cancelling a pre order and it's only $5)... but my trepidation was from the fact that (surprisingly) not many people I knew had heard of this game in the year leading up to it, but also, I had very high expectations due to the promises of the "throwback rpg" that was supposedly bundled in a "Firefly" type universe. I mean... c'mon! What more could you ask for?

By "throwback rpg," I'm referring to the good ol' days where your decisions ACTUALLY meant something. Your freedom was real and not artificial and not just some marketing promise used to get you to buy the game. I'm talking "old school, dialogue heavy, relationship building, watch your vicarious character's traits/personalities flesh out and evolve right before your eyes based off of your decisions and actions" kind of game.... did that make sense?

So with my high expectations, I couldn't help but feel that I was setting myself up for disappointment... like so many other games that came out in recent years (*cough* Days Gone *cough*). SO MANY GAMES get our hopes up with OVER promising and UNDER-delivering.

Folks, this game delivers on all fronts. True RPG. True to it's promises of decision making/impacting dialogue... OH AND the combat. One thing I didn't hold my breath on (because of past shooting mechanics of the Fallout game) was the... shooting... mechanics. I was doubly prepared for poor shooting because I just came off of Borderlands 3, where the shooting is phenomenal! LOW AND BEHOLD....THE SHOOTING MECHANICS ARE SHOCKINGLY GREAT! Perfect? No. But they hold their own, which just adds to the already superb premise of the game play. It looks like Death Stranding is set up to be a snooze fest and a disappointment (based off of early reviews... even the good reviews state it's boring and extremely frustrating). All I gotta say is thank you "The Outer Worlds" for being the first game in a long time.... maybe ever for keeping ALL OF YOUR PROMISES... AND THEN SOME!!

It’s fantastic. The a real RPG and I’ve missed it so much in the last few Fallout games. Really, it hasn’t felt this good since Bioshock, Mass Effect 2/3 (yeah, I liked 3) and New Vegas and that makes sense.

Great story and nice overall experience with the game. However I did not quite like battle mechanics. It uses fallout engine and that makes it not the best shooter. Basically fallout approach with action points and targeting specific parts of an enemy works a lot better. This game isn't without flaws it has them but most of the flaws are very tiny. You can't take a mod off a gun after you've installed it kind of annoying but not world ending. You can't take a mod off a gun after you've installed it kind of annoying but not world ending. However seeing critics complaining about the size of the world and listing that as a flaw is missing the point as to why a few smaller worlds is better than one large one. I don't fast travel in Outer Worlds very often. In Fallout 3,4 Skyrim I fast traveled ALL the time! You would finish a quest and then the marker would move to the other side of the map. The largest distance I had to cover so far is about 600 meters. Traveling is shorter than the load time of fast traveling (maybe?). Load times are pretty short unlike Fallout Skyrim. I don't even typically like Obsidian's games and I had my doubts about this one but I have been proven wrong. I haven't run into any weird bugs in this game either unlike Fallout Skyrim. It is a great time if you like Fallout Skyrim style games. Expand

The absolute only thing that could make this game better is add in 3rd person perspective, and even without that I'm still one hundred percent confident in saying that this game is as close to perfect that a game is going to get.

An immersive story, a rich and colorful world to explore and no micro transactions to name a few.

There is a place for MMO titles but you do not take a game franchise that has traditionally been single player action adventure RPG, strip out all of the life from the game, monetize everything you can and call it the latest greatest installment. Outer Worlds is what the Fallout Fans wanted. it is so obvious Obsidian gets it. Bethesda is trying to milk the cow for every dollar, quarter, nickle and dime and it is sad. Such a breath of fresh air to get to pick up the sticks and dive into a world, into a character and an adventure with real living, breathing NPCs and making choices that really matter and also have almost unlimited replay-ability. What ever Outer Worlds lacks in length of play through it makes up for with that. Every play through can be totally different and unique again like the old Fallout games were. Remember it was not until recently we got spoiled with the massive open world games and hour and hours of game play content within one play though. In the hay day of RPGs (Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Fallout 3, etc...) if you got 20-30 hours out of a game play that was well worth the $60 price tag. I feel that Outer Worlds is worth every penny. I paid full price for 76 and played it all of maybe 15 hours before I just couldn't anymore and then they marked it down to almost nothing shortly thereafter. That was a ripoff.

I do not know if we will ever see another Fallout title after the terror that has been Fallout 76 but I for one am glad to know Obsidian is back in business and with the money Microsoft can put into their devs I think we, the true Fallout fans, can look forward to this begin a true revival of the Action Adventure RPG and the real #SavePlayerOne campaign.

The beginning guns suck but as I’m getting better weapons I really like how they shoot and some mods are pretty cool. I like that you can have 2 companions at time. I enjoy the humor and the characters. The graphics are amazing and personally I enjoy the semi psychedelic color schemes. I feel like normal mode is too easy, and while hard is tough I enjoy tough battles. I probably won’t get into survival mode as I die enough in hard. I wish it had more auto saves. I just manually save a lot now because it’s annoying when you res pawn 2 loading screens ago. I’m excited to finish this adventure so hope this info helps. I’m rating 10/10 because I do think it’s a really great game, there was no false claims or shady business going on like micro-transactions and other bs, and giving forgiveness on the things I don’t like because I would like to see them high enough rated where they can either hire a bigger team or work with a larger studio in the future. Cons: Lip syncing is off at points and frame rate drops of at times and gets stuttery.

All that to say, there are not enough cons to make me think that this game is anything short of a masterful return to the RPG genre that we all know and love.

This is a beautifully crafted game, it shows that it was carefully developed, it is story driven, has diverse RPG elements for your character, I deducted a point because however diverse the character traits are, the weapon and armor diversity is scarce, especially mid to late game. Excellent game that is just the right length. The quests were fun and not grindy like most games. The postal service quest was particularly funny. It was nice that many of the quest choices overlapped and the devs actually made them work well together letting you play different styles.

There weren't really a lot of different enemy types but since the areas weren't huge this was OK.

Later in the game you were a god anyway even against bosses. But there isn't a lot of depth to the combat either. You either stealth kill someone, run past them or just start shooting at each other until somebody dies.

The leveling system is OK and it is good that you max out close to the end of the game rather than the middle like other games. The flaws were an interesting concept but they weren't really worth the cost. The perks that are available are mostly useless so taking a flaw to get a perk point when you don't really need any perks is pointless. If the perks would have been useful then this could have been a great system.

The NPC interactions were great and covered a lot of topics. Unfortunately the companions were pretty much set in stone and nothing you did would impact them or their quests beyond some conversations. But that is OK because it still worked.

One of the biggest complaints I have against the game is the need to map out exactly what you need to do in order to unlock all the achievements. If you aren't careful you can end up having to play through multiple times because you missed some random option earlier in the game. Checklists for achievements is never a good thing.

I'm also a little frustrated with the difficulty balancing. There is easy and hard and not much in between. Trying to play through supernova now and it is brutal. Forced survival aspects on top of enemies who (early on) kill with a couple of hits but take a massive amount of damage in return makes playing "any style" difficult. You basically either need to run past everything or become a tank. Since points are spread thin you can't do both. It would have been nice if there was some more balancing in the middle difficulty range and/or letting supernova have some options you could turn off. I personally hate survival mechanics so combining this with running everywhere is just not that fun.

Overall you can clearly see Fallout in this game from the outfits being worn to the TTD. There aren't mutants and the world is overly colored but the scenes of destruction are still there. This is a really good game and I'm glad they are making some DLC. I just hope they increase the level cap or something so the DLC is worth more than just the story.

And that alone is already amazing!
I did not know what to expect from this game other than, well, an Obsidian RPG. The thing is, I didn't think I was going to enjoy it so much! All of your common Western RPG elements are here, done in the best way possible.

All of your common Western RPG elements are here, done in the best way possible. It's a VERY familiar game, ESPECIALLY if you've played Fallout 3 or New Vegas.
The graphics are cute, the performance is good (albeit a few hiccups), the quests are entertaining, the shooting mechanics works fine and the progression system functions like it should.
But the thing that makes this conventional game shine among its peers is the writing!
The story is great! It won't blow your mind, but it will convince you!
I got invested in my character, in my crew, in the colony, the state of each world, each long and short quest, the role I played in the tale and in the witty dialogue. Just talking with people and deciding my lines got me super pumped because it's all so clever and very well done. The Outer Worlds has this magic that made me care for the things I said, did and its consequences. Few games like that made me feel this way, while still making me laugh.

The game isn't roses all the way through, though.
Despite its amazing storytelling, the ending is abrupt and anticlimatic. I liked what was written in the aftermath, but it was poorly handled.
Some parts of the gameplay felt dated. For example, melee combat is suicidal and impractical. MANY items you pick are useless and VERY repetitive. After a while, looting becomes boring and unnecessary, especially once you get to higher levels or close to the endgame.
And I get that the game is a FPS, but then... what's the use of creating and decorating your charachter?
Also, **** Monarch! That place is dull as hell!

I totally recommend this game, but I can see why people wouldn't think much of it. I loved it and I think you should try. That might scratch your Fallout itch for a while, at least...

The outer worlds looks fantastic, runs smooth as silk (on PS4 Pro) and is rich in detail, content, character development options, customisation and combat. It is everything you could possibly hope this genre of video game would be and a ton load more added in just as a bonus - out of the collective goodness of Obsidian's heart.

This gem! From the creator of the fan favourite Fallout New Vegas, Obsidian is once again showing Bethesda how it's REALLY done - (to the point of dishing out a huge dose of abject humiliation in the process in this particular case)

Compare The Outer Worlds to the broken mess that was and still is Fallout 76, with its over priced micro transactions and utterly disgraceful, borderline criminal (imo) Subscription "Service." Bethesda (probably being forced to by its owner Zenimax to do so) have turned their sheer greed and audacity up to 11 and have just gone straight for the "desperate cash grab" strategy aimed directly (and ruthlessly) at the few players that actually stuck with their half finished rubbish. That's what fan loyalty got them! Nice!

Anyway, compare that dumpster fire atrocity of a game with this. Night and Day only begins to illustrate the point.

That said, we do now have to anxiously wait to see if Take 2 interactive decides to introduce micro transactions into the outer worlds and break all of our hearts in doing so. Please T2I. Just Nooooo!

The Outer Worlds is a well-written, novel, gorgeous roleplaying game, made for today using some of yesterday's best tricks. If you fall into the trap of using fast travel it can feel like ticking off to-do list items instead of adventuring. But if you force yourself to slow down and let the sharp dialogue, otherworldly vistas, and intriguing characters work their magic, it's one of the best roleplaying experiences of the last few years.

It’s a familiar template that The Outer Worlds builds itself around, but the depth and wit within its universe invites you ever-deeper. There’s social commentary and late-stage capitalism gallows humour all over the place, but it’s the richness of its imagined future that really holds the attention. [Issue#184, p.84]

As a recent addition to the Microsoft Game Studios family, Obsidian have put their best foot forward with The Outer Worlds. Solid gun play, an engaging story with great, likeable characters and a world that is fun to explore and interact with. Some missions let the side down a little and the game could be bigger but with so many nods to the great RPG predecessors and taking the best elements from them this is a great game to pick up.
