The Innsmouth Case is a detective adventure in the style of an interactive book inspired by the fantastical works of horror legend H.P. Lovecraft. The unique mixture of horror and humor makes The Innsmouth Case the first scary-comedy-text-adventure of its kind. A game in which every decision counts, and there is far more than one way to successfully solve the case ... or fail miserably!

As you can hopefully tell, I very much enjoyed The Innsmouth Case. It’s easy to pick up and get into, full of interesting and witty writing, plenty of alternate routes and options, and even surprisingly decent in the audio/visual department. Fans of the choose your own adventure style books of old should absolutely be checking this one out.

Play The Innsmouth Case the right way, and you’ve got a couple of hours of delightfully twisted play here. It feels like it’s written by HP Lovecraft’s saucier, less subtle sibling, and playing hunt-the-ending takes you to some memorable and downright disgusting places. It’s got no substance to it of course - the ‘Case’ in the title mostly gets forgotten about - and what you’re left with is a number of punchlines to bawdy jokes, but sometimes that’s just what a night’s gaming needs.

The Innsmouth Case is one of the more unique games that I’ve played in recent memory. While it’s based on HP Lovecraft lore, it’s also aThe Innsmouth Case is one of the more unique games that I’ve played in recent memory. While it’s based on HP Lovecraft lore, it’s also a choose your own adventure of a visual novel that’s presented as a "book style" format. It’s difficult to divulge too much of The Innsmouth Case without spoiling it but I will say the humor I found to be one of its strong points. The game offers up 27 different endings, and in true choose your own adventure tradition quite a few end up with your character dying, many times in truly horrific ways. Even if there are plenty of one-liners, this game isn’t entirely for the faint of heart or those looking for puppies and rainbows. The thing that really sticks with you and the thing that I found to really make the game stand out is the comedy. The Innsmouth Case allows you to lighten the oppressive mood with a goofy one-liner, a comedic insult, or a self-aware nod. In one play through my detective found himself in an arcade playing a survival horror game. Rather than immediately getting into killing the zombies, I continued to view the game’s opening cutscene, which led to an amusing digression about the detective and the other customers getting pulled in by the story of a pharmaceutical company that accidentally created the zombies. This is quite symbolic of The Innsmouth Case and while you can certainly play it in a straight forward manner, it’s a even better if you take all the weird detours it offers. If you do so the end result is a game that is well worth checking out. So if this sounds like your cup of tea then head on over to the Xbox digital games store. It’s well worth the price of admission as it offers plenty of “bang” for the price of admission. Expand
