Even though this is a good port of the Action RPG that appeared on PC, I ask myself the question “Why?” over and over. Why take the two year old game including its expensive character micro transactions when over the course of the last years this character as well as the content evolved into the Final Cut that was just released recently? Why?

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing likely won’t be dragging too many players away from releases like Fallout 4. However, when the release schedule slows down in a few months time, there’s likely to be plenty of players who are pleasantly surprised by a trip to Borgovia.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing comes to the Xbox One without the improvements of the Final Cut edition. It's still a nice action RPG, but the combat system is inconsistent.

An average Action-RPG that features everything that the genre is known for: hordes of enemies, plenty of loot, and an expansive set of skills to choose from, but there is nothing to set it apart from the crowd.

Neocore Games has made a game that is initially fun, once you get past the poor story and voice acting and awkward controls, but balancing issues and over-reliance on throwing hordes of enemies at its players turn the game into a slog in the second half.

We are not sure why NeoCore Games released Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing on the Xbox One. A sudden change in difficulty, no story at all and now you have to pay for characters. No, with just a decent combat system, Van Helsing is not that incredible.

    [A] musty romp. [Feb 2016, p.87]

Gamers will play Van Helsing because it scratches the itch for this type of action adequately at this price, but the repetitive action, awkward controls, poor graphics and strange tower defense levels make it feel like an unfinished title. Despite being a cheap (or free, on Xbox One) diversion, Van Helsing is a bad value, and a worse investment of players' time.

I've tried the blade build and the gun buildI have spent a total of $0 on this game and have enjoyed at least 30 hours of gameplay already. I've tried the blade build and the gun build so far and both are interesting. I'll pay $4 each for the magic and engineer character types if and when I'm done with what I have now. This game is about 75% of Diablo 3 at a 95% discount so far.

Very interesting action-adventure RPG with a nice steam-punk twist. While free, it's easily worth it. At $10 and two more character types with additional maps/missions, this is still definitely worth your time.

I know some have complained about the co-op missions but I'm 30 hours in and haven't ever TRIED co-op yet. If that's a requirement for you, Halo 5 is a MUCH better choice.

I was gonna be really really clever and be the 1st meta reviewer to review a free game and give it a zero because of mediocre co-op & ignoreI was gonna be really really clever and be the 1st meta reviewer to review a free game and give it a zero because of mediocre co-op & ignore the fact that it's probably the most unique Xbox live gold game since,,,,,,well considering gold games tend to suck and the 360 gold games are games we all bought & played 3-4 years ago= expectations are low.....but I guess some reviewers are gonna review a free game by comparing it's co-op prowess to that of Borderlands or Diablo.

--I just started & the game seems very similar to Diablo. The enemies and the way they rush you is Diablo/Gauntlet style,,but no game let alone a free game can compare to most over developed game ever....but so far the game seems cool because Creatures of the night are fun to destroy...
--umm I recommend you splurge on the hard drive space. If you can afford the space ;)
---seriously, use Xbox website or app and accept the free way you own it without having to Install it. Maybe one day if there's absolutely nothing to play........

Not only is this game a LOT better than the "professional" reviewers gave it credit for, it's easily one of the best freebies we've ever gotten. If you loved Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Diablo, or Torchlight, you'll love Van Helsing. The story is amusing, there's a ton of varied loot, and a nice assortment of hidden goodies. What's not to love? Full Review »
