Tetris Effect: Connected upgrades its musical rhythms and visualizations with fun multiplayer PvP, but the new Connected mode steals the multiplayer show with an exciting, energetic way to play Tetris that’s a welcome alternative to its competitive modes.

Tetris Effect: Connected is 2 steps forward and 1 step back from the original 2018 release so if you want to play Tetris online, I can't think of a better option than this. Oh, right; Tetris 99... but that doesn't have a cool single player campaign like this does.

Tetris, the granddaddy of all puzzlers, has hit the dance floor in his sequined disco outfit. It’s the best you’ve ever seen him, dazzling, blinding even. He’s dancing with your friend who’s half his age, but the moves he’s rocking are old-school dad-dancing and oh so dated.

Tetris Effect is one of the best VR titles on the market, so without the feature Connected feels, well, disconnected.

The latest iteration of the falling-block puzzler comes from Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s Enhanced Experience and combines music, sound, vibration, and visuals into something that becomes almost transcendent. Don’t be fooled by the focus on music and mood though because Tetris Effect can be punishingly difficult. I welcome this as a Teris semi-pro, others may not. This might sound ridiculous, but the result is that Tetris Effect has a powerful emotional impact and becomes so immersive. As you clear blocks in the very first stage, sound builds from ambient strings and odd nature-inspired noises to full song. Forms of humans, whales and plants briefly materialize and disappear from luminescent particles that pulse to the beat.I really enjoyed the way Japanese developer made people have emotional moments while playing an actual TETRIS game it's just unbelievable that what the complete immersive experience offers this amazing classic and historic game for the Xbox One and Xbox Series X. The sudden changes in tempo though interesting at first, just come across as lazy and ill-thought out after a few levels. Suddenly halving or doubling the tempo comes cross as being incredibly lazy and does very little to add any excitiment to the game. There is also the issue the music being reminiscent of chart fare electronica, which is not going to appeal to large swathes of people.

Some of the visualisations and brick aesthetics actively hamper your play, leaving you not being able to see what is there in the play feilds or quickly acknowledge what is coming next. Which becomes a massive factor when experienced in unison with the temp changes mentioned earlier.

There isn't even a restart option in the settings menu, to quickly pick up from your checkpoint. Which is poor design 101, especially in a game that is designed to be intense and frustrating.

Though enjoyable enough for a short while, there are much better Tetris games available from the last 30 years. I'm just glad it was on Gamepass and I didn't buy it.
