Super Lucky's Tale on Xbox One doesn't do anything new, but what it puts on the table, it does well. It is attractive for the little ones in the house, but also for adults who want to remember the good times of the 3D platforms.

Super Lucky’s Tale is the first platformer on the Xbox One X that gives players an honest arcade experience with a fun protagonist, decent mechanics and truly impressive 4K graphics.

Considering Microsoft’s focus on Racing and Shooter genres for its exclusive lineup, Super Lucky’s Tale feels like an exciting and different platforming experience that will take players back to 6th and 7th generation of consoles again, and even with some camera and gameplay issues, Super Lucky’s Tale is still a welcomed addition to Microsoft’s lineup.

The biggest flaw is that it fails to leave a major impression despite getting most things right on a point-by-point basis. It controls well outside of some camera issues and looks gorgeous. The sound design is impressive, while the soundtrack leaves a bit to be desired. The overall game isn’t a classic, but everything is done well and there isn’t much outright wrong with it.

If you're not in a good mood then you should really try out Super Lucky's Tale. The Xbox exclusive looks gorgeous on the Xbox One X and the smile on the fox Lucky is contagious. It doesn't matter how old you are, Super Lucky's Tale is a game for everyone.

Despite some dubious gameplay design (failed mini-games can’t be replayed without restarting the whole sub-level) and problems with the fixed-camera position sometimes obscuring jumps, Super Lucky’s Tale is a solid platformer. It honors the tried and true genre clichés and for a mid-priced game, it doesn’t even need to present anything entirely new.

Almost every moment of Super Lucky's Tale allows for the pure joy of platforming when you aren't annoyed by the limited camera design. It's worth noting that the main game is extremely short to beat, but there are enough optional levels, puzzles and collectables to complete that will easily double or even triple your time with it.

A complete and joyful platformer, recommended for the little ones or those who expect classic playability. Its lack of ideas and several technical constraints hamper its success.

3D platformers don't get much more generic than Super Lucky's Tale. That being said, if you're looking to go on a relaxing adventure in an adorable world then you'll find a solid and ultimately enjoyable platformer here.

3D platformer with an oldschool vibe, but lacking challenge and variety.

Super Lucky’s Tale is a 3D platforming game, priced at $39, that is indeed made for the family to enjoy. That being said, it sticks to the tried and true nature, and gameplay style, of what make platform games what they are. If there is one area to complain about, it is the in-game camera, which can cause more than a few untimely deaths at the worst times. Super Lucky’s Tale doesn’t do anything to make it stand out, but it is not a bad game and one that does deserve a look if you want to play something different on your Xbox One this year.

Super Lucky's Tale is a very enjoyable game. It's very easy for long-time fans of the genre, but if you're looking for light-hearted platforming adventure, it's a good choice.

All ages gameplay, a colourful world to explore and a platforming mascot who has some potential to join the legends of the genre in the years to come. Super Lucky’s Tale won’t push your skills too far when it comes to its imaginative level design, but it’ll still be a cathartic way to wrap up the year thanks to its nostalgic focus on the past.

Super Lucky’s Tale is still a good-hearted family fun title that should pride itself on being a game that all ages can enjoy, and by completion, you will truly feel you have been treated to a game that does well in immersing you into the story of a small young fox, and the adventure he embarks on.

This game reminds us of the good times when Rare still made excellent platform games. The beautiful world filled with collectibles is amazing and the gameplay is fun for any age. It is too bad the camera angles are often a bit clumsy.

You can't help but smile as you play. Its adorable nature, strange characters, and quirky dialogues make you fall in love with the game even though the camera controls are a bit off. If you're looking for a title which is guaranteed to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, then be sure to give this one a go.

Super Lucky's Tale offers a charming and colorful adventure with basic but accessible and fun gameplay. However, its cast of characters is forgettable, the worlds it offers feel a little bit repetitive and its difficulty can get kinda easy for experienced players of the genre. You can say its just an average platform title.

A very nicely designed platformer, with an immediate and easy gameplay and some very nice 2.5D sections. Unluckily, though, some control problems and lack of content keep it from shining more.

Super Lucky's Tale succeeds in several ways. For anyone looking for a quick and simple platforming break, or introducing their kids to the world of gaming, this charming, beautiful and largely competently designed world will likely keep you entertained throughout. Unlike many child-friendly properties in the media, the characters, music and voice-work will likely keep the young ones entertained without irritating the parent. It's a shame Lucky himself is such a bland character in terms of personality and move set; what little interaction Lucky has with the world is hampered by fairly frequent and irritating design decisions. Little Lucky really could have given us a bit more to keep players of all ages entertained, and he will need to find a few more tricks up his sleeve in any future adventures if he wants to compete with the veteran mascots of the genre. Here's hoping that he gets the chance.

Super Lucky’s Tale is by no means bad — it’s simply good; fun, but easily forgettable. If it was released at a different time than Odyssey, it may have made more of an impression, but alas, here we are.

Super Lucky’s Tale is a charming and sweet indie platformer that provides hours of retro platforming joy. It’s probably had far too much weight put upon its shoulders as the Xbox One X’s sole launch title, and is by no means perfect; a fact that's been amplified by the recent antics of a dungaree-wearing plumber. However, while the genre has undoubtedly moved on, taken on its own merit Super Lucky’s Tale is simple, inescapable fun.

I liked Super Lucky's Tale for its cute charm and textbook platforming, I just wished I would have been more challenged throughout the adventure. The lack of difficulty really pulled me out of the adventure, as it's hard to stay engaged when I know nothing is really going to test me.

You don't see many platform games in this style these days, especially on the Xbox One, so Super Lucky's Tale delivers something a little different. If you're feeling a little nostalgic for a platformer in a classic mold, the game will certainly help scratch that itch. It's also something that will be appealing to younger gamers, but the youngest ones may find it a little frustrating. Otherwise, you're safe taking a pass on this particular tale.

Super Lucky's Tale looks and sounds pleasant, and its charming world and characters will appeal to younger audiences. However, despite getting the basics right, some gameplay and overall design concerns lead the game down a few wrong foxholes.

Super Lucky's Tale is a VRless version of Lucky's Tale released last year on Onculus Rift. With 4K display on Xbox One X, the game doesn't manage to do much, especially because of an awful camera which makes Lucky's handling very hazardous.

It’s an entirely safe option for younger children, which will surely enjoy it’s low difficulty and easy environmental riddles. Fans of the genre though will have to look elsewhere, unless they want to go through it in under 5 hours with 100% completion while being on “autopilot”.

I can see why Microsoft put its faith in Super Lucky’s Tale, making it an Xbox One console exclusive and giving it Xbox One X support at launch. Its cast of oddball characters lends the game real charm and while it’s far from revolutionary, there’s definitely fun to be had here. But the game is so wilfully and bafflingly intent on blocking off said fun that you’ll need all the persistence of a bin-raiding fox to reap Super Lucky’s Tale’s rewards.

Super Lucky's Tale has no special talents that will be remembered for a long time. Certainly, it was also an inexpensive marketing choice to get out of the game so short of Super Mario Odyssey, which is a title with which to inevitably make a direct confrontation, and between the two platforms, Super Lucky's Tale comes out beaten.

It's easy to imagine how Super Lucky's Tale would be the highlight of a younger kid's weekend, but it has little to offer anyone looking for an enjoyably challenging 3D platformer.

Nintendo has Super Mario Odyssey and PlayStation has Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, which is why I was really hoping that Super Lucky’s Tale would be more than what it is. Instead it’s an overly simplistic platformer that comes with annoyances such as limited camera control and forced replay value. Super Lucky’s Tale desperately wants to immerse you with how stunning and diverse it looks, but fails to totally captivate you due to how damn easy everything is.

This isn't a bad game, but it brings nothing new. The lack of challenge may make it more suitable for younger players but it isn't worth it if you are looking to test your platforming skills.

Who could be interested in Super Lucky's Tale? Without its VR feature, Playful's last game seem to just be. Experienced players will not find anything worth the time in this basic platformer which cannot properly imitate any mechanics of the genre. And with its irritating controls, it clearly is not suited for children. Too bad, because its colorful levels had some good ideas here and there.

Super Lucky's Tale had potential to be the good kind of throwback 3D mascot platformer you don't see any more. But a terrible camera, shoddy jumping and awful forced padding squander it completely, leaving Lucky to once again join the graveyard of forgettable video game mascots.

It’s all such a disappointment. I very much wanted to like Lucky, because the Xbox could use a decent answer to Nintendo in the 3D platformer genre. Unfortunately, Super Lucky’s Tale definitely isn’t it.

Lucky is unrealized potential. There is always space for a new kid-friendly platformer, and Lucky’s cute and colorful world could’ve served as a great entry point for a new franchise. Sadly, poor controls, a terrible camera, and just overall lackluster gameplay leave Super Lucky’s Tale being a subpar effort not worthy of your time.

Bland, boring, and badly made – returning to the bad old days of low rent mascot platformers is not a good way to demonstrate the power of the Xbox One X.

Suffers under the shadow of Super Mario Odyssey...I'd rather be playing that.
  3. Nov 28, 2017
Even though the occasional 2D-only sections and one-off puzzle stages only add a little variety to the mix, I still had fun playing it. It isn’t going to win any awards for originality but it’s a nice 4K platformer for only £20, and should entertain you for the five hours or so it takes to complete 100%.

Thankfully on the whole it’s a pretty decent platformer even though it does suffer with a few shortcomings. The game does a wonderful job of being accessible to all gamers and the easy pick up and play style means nobody gets left out. The only problem with this style is that it does lack a challenge at times and that can make things boring, but they combat that by making the boss battles fun and challenging at the same time. The platforming on the whole has been done very well, and the most important thing is that everything works properly and remains responsive throughout. There are quite a few levels for you to sink your teeth into and each level has some good variety to them and this in turn keeps things fresh and interesting. I did however have some problems with the camera when playing these levels and the awkwardness of it can frustrate you quite a bit at times. The different characters in the game can be quite charming at times, and I thought Lucky was adorable. I will say though that Lucky could have done with a few more abilities and a little more in the way of personality. The presentation side of the game is something I really enjoyed. Visually the game is packed to the brim with colour and the environments look great. The sound design is also well done and the best thing is that the soundtrack never outstays its welcome. At the end of the day Super Lucky’s Tale is a game that captures both retro and modern platforming elements together and for the most part it works. The few problems can be distracting at times and can impact on the fun factor, but without a doubt you will find it enjoyable more than frustrating. If you love platformers that can be played and enjoyed by the whole family then you will love this game, and in the end it gets a recommendation from me. Full Review »
