It is charming, fun and surprisingly deep, with complex mechanics to master and planning very much a necessity. The graphics are cute, the heroes are full of personality and the story is engaging. What’s not to like?

There is a ton of content and the price of the game is easily justified. I would like to stress that at times, this title can feel slow and may be one you won’t have enough time to sink into for enjoyment. If you’ve played the actual board game I would highly suggest giving this a shot. If you haven’t, I still think it’s worth a roll of the dice.

The game takes place in a square grid with a good variety of maps and scenarios. The story is obviously aimed at younger audiences and can be skipped by pressing the Y button. The gameplay is what matters here and the gameplay is great!

You have melee characters such as a fighter, Knight, Paladin, rogue, barbarian and range characters such as spell casters and archers. Agro management is a key part of the game. Equipment have stats that can boost or diminish agro as well as increase health, armor and movement amongst other things. Make sure your melee characters generate 2 - 3 agro per turn and that your ranged characters (especially spell casters) loose 2 - 3 agro per turn. This will make it that your tough characters will have the attention of the enemy while your spell casters are decimating the enemy with aoe fireballs without catching much attention.

A word on the dice. At the beginning of each round one die is rolled for each friend and foe on the field. Dice can grant one round buffs that increase health, armor, attack and defense. The dice can also unlock special abilities, some of which are amazing. But some dice cause debuffs that can damage your defense or health. The debuffs effect depends upon the character that gets the die so be careful who you give the debuff to. Equipped items also influence dice roll.

A fun tactic. Your fighter, Knight and archer can counter attack if they get a blue die. Even better, the Knight gets the first attack when they are targeted. If you have agro regeneration on your Knight and give him the blue die, then he will kill most of the enemies that attack him and many will focus on him if his agro is high. I have watched my Knight kill 6 enemy (in one round and not during his turn) and seriously wound others this way. The preemptive and counterattack if used wisely can rival your spell casters in terms of damage. But don’t neglect shields on your tank/s as they will massively increase their survivability.

Aside from a forgettable story and a cluttered inventory, this game is great. I can honestly say this game is one of my favorite games on the system. Highly recommend.

There is plenty of replaybility present in the game and that’s mainly because you can replay each stage easily and you get better loot each time.
I really enjoyed the presentation side of the game and in my opinion both the visuals and sound design give the game quite a bit of charm. For me the gameplay has been done really well because they’ve managed to get the perfect balance of being fair and challenging at the same time. The story is good in parts it just doesn’t have enough good parts and in the end everything is just a little bit basic and generic. The controls feel a little awkward from time to time which in the end did cause me to fail a few times. Unfortunately the different items you can get lack in terms of variety and the worst thing is that they all basically look the same, which was a little disappointing. Does Super Dungeon Tactics do enough to get a recommendation from me? All in all I knew all about Super Dungeon Tactics a couple of years ago because some of my friends found it be quite enjoyable on the PC, so in a way I was quite looking forward to it making its way to the Xbox One. Thankfully I can see why my friends enjoyed the game so much but I will say that it isn’t without its problems. Despite it suffering with a few shortcomings though it still gets more things right than it gets wrong and most important of all it gets the core mechanics spot on such as the combat and tactical elements which in the end means it gets a thumbs up from me.
