The original State of Decay is a game that I placed a huge amount of enjoyable hours into and to say I was looking forward to State of Decay 2 would be a massive understatement. Thankfully State of Decay 2 pretty much met my lofty expectations in all areas and despite it suffering with a few problems here and there it’s quite clear to see that this game has significant improvements over the original. The biggest and most enjoyable improvement for me was without a doubt the combat. The combat in the game is excellent and killing zombies never gets boring thanks to the varied and satisfying moves you can perform on the zombies. The gameplay on the whole feels improved as well and in my opinion it remains fun for longer. The main reason why it remains fun for longer is because it has more variety than in the previous game and this variety is definitely evident in both the missions you can undertake and the maps you undertake the missions on. If you like game’s that offer you lots of content then you will love State of Decay 2. I’m not exaggerating when I say that there’s almost an endless amount of replayability present in this game and the best thing is that this content can be enjoyed in both short bursts and long periods as well. When playing the game though you will however bump into a few bugs along the way, and whilst most of these bugs are small and not game-breaking they can still be frustrating and ruin the immersion levels somewhat at times. I was however able to look past these issues quite easily because you end up forgetting about them thanks to the different mechanics and elements the game has. Thankfully these different mechanics hold up really well most of the time and can be enjoyed in both single player and multiplayer. I must admit that I was really looking forward to the game’s multiplayer offering and thankfully when it works it’s really fun. The multiplayer option though does suffer with a few problems and they will have to make some tweaks to make it a better experience, but I appreciate the effort that has gone into the core idea though. Without a doubt one of my favourite things about the game was the presentation side of the things. Visually the game can look awesome at times and the accompanying sound design creates a very eerie atmosphere which in turn makes you become very immersed in the gameplay. At the end of the day if you were a fan of the first State of Decay then you will thoroughly enjoy State of Decay 2. It’s took what was good from the first game and improved it and even though it suffers with quite a few bugs these bugs still didn’t stop me from having a very enjoyable experience and these bugs also don’t stop me from giving the game a big thumbs up. This game is worth buying. The bugs seem to be the only major problem going for it. Rating it as high as 10 is stupid while rating as low as zero is just as stupid. It's decent game. So if like zombies, base building, low prices, and you have even a bit of patience, this game could be for you.

such a bad game. I would even go to say it's one of the worst games I've played of all time. So many bugs, and such a punishing game, especially when you can't hit any zombies because of a bug. don't buy honestly

They are calling this a Triple-A title? It's the same as the original State of Decay. You do the same things, over and over. And OMG the Bugs. You are on the most powerful console ever, PS2 graphics? Weird voice acting. I only recommend trying this if you have Gamepass. If you don't have GP save your money. it will $15 in 2 months.

Poor content if you compare with the SOD1.
Only added one new Zombi, disease, cooperative and 4K support.

State of Decay 2 has a lot going for it if you're into the genre - it's both extremely frustrating and very addicting. For as ambitious as it's scope you can't help but notice they only slapped one coat of paint on it at times, but i generally don't complain too much about slight technical glitches if the core gameplay mechanic is solid. For as ambitious as it's scope you can't help but notice they only slapped one coat of paint on it at times, but i generally don't complain too much about slight technical glitches if the core gameplay mechanic is solid. Where I would call it's level of resource management rather overwhelming and meticulous, if you press through it you'll eventually see the logic of its ways.

This game is mostly run-of-the-mill fetch questing in an open world environment. You set up a base and then fortify it with other random survivors you find on the map. It does a good job of covering what would be considered necessary basics in the zombie apocalypse in a very general sense that becomes more natural to you through trial and error.

It's really a low-impact game, and doesn't require a lot of twitchy focus to have a good time - that being said the name of the game is BE PREPARED. If you run out looking for supplies without some of your own, things may turn sour pretty quickly and you'll find your character out of stamina limping away from a car that got glitched on a guard rail - cursing the 4 rucksacks you've squirreled away in the trunk as you save your last burst of dodge power to avoid that flashing dot directly behind you on your radar for a thousand yards or so back to your home base or outpost.

As you use different characters in your community you level up their general stats and this happens pretty quickly, so you get a lot of rewarding feedback from the game regularly that keeps you trekking forward.

I really recommend playing the game more in shorter bursts of an hour or so - after a while constantly calling in on the network to find food because none of your survivors knows how to garden and can't learn a new skill can get tiring, and you may end up losing one of your favorite community members. for good. Honestly your first playthru of this game will be more of a warmup for your next better-planned community, but that mostly depends on how excited you are about getting it better the next time around or moving to a different game.

In closing - there are LOTS of glitches, they will frustrate you a lot at times - you will lose resources and seemingly not be able to finish side quests for no reason without direction. That being said, I like smashing in zombies and managing statistics in video games. I feel the scope and general feeling of reward from taking care of your end times community makes most of these complaints minimal in the grand scheme of open world games today. I'm sure i'll eventually lose interest in it's repetitiveness like I have all other games that follow similar layouts - but I'm definitely enjoying it for the time being and have already gotten my money's worth out of this budget title. Recommended!

The game grabs your attention right away as you find and begin to build a settlement and level-up your characters.
However, the game soon devolves into a series of never-ending chores punctuated by mission that roll in faster than can be addressed. And this is when the frustration really sets in. One of the key aspects of the game is managing inventory and survivors. However, when on a mission, you can't switch between survivors without canceling the mission. Want to switch characters because your currently controlled character injured? Too bad. The game won't allow it without cancelling the mission. Oh, and some missions are on a timer, which is kept a mystery to the player. More than once I've been halfway across the map heading towards a mission only to have it time-out, even though no timer was indicated.
There are other annoying features as well. The game advises the player to take a companion with you, but most of the time they're so brainless, they only serve as a pack mule to help you carry stuff, but you can't switch to their inventory when on a mission. The game also advises you to use explosives to destroy plague hearts, but as you encounter one, your companion runs up to melee the thing only to be knocked back and injured by your explosives.
And then there are zombies. The game world populates very fast with zombies. And more than a few times I've cleared out an area only to have a massive hoard of zombies magically appear seconds later and attack me.
But your enemies aren't all zombies. In this game you are constantly battling against bugs. Your driving full speed and suddenly your vehicle hits an invisible object. Sometimes that invisible object causes your ride to catch fire. Sometimes a bug prevents you from exiting the flaming wreck and you die.
When your character dies, they're gone from the game. That's it. There's not player-controlled save-game feature, so when the character you've spent hours leveling up suddenly dies due to flaws in the game, it's very frustrating.
The game's title: State of Decay is an appropriate one as it seems to aptly describe this series.

State of Decay is a tricky beast. I can understand why so many people are down on the game, but it's very much a Marmite game.

I think some people play games to blitz through a story and tick off the "complete" box, but this isn't really a good game for that. I've not done the maths but I would hazard a guess that if you did that the game would be just a couple of hours long and likely you'd miss out on a lot of the mechanics. The fact is there's very little in terms of story in the game, it's not really what the game is about...

If you're treating it a little more as the survival game it's intended to be, then you'll find a lot of fun - it's good to go exploring, trying to find bits and bobs for your base and to find other survivors, I enjoyed finding a new camp and trying to learn each area and in turn form a well established camp of survivors with allies around the map. The random events worked well and the new (albeit few) mechanics since the first game were welcome.

It's definitely a recommended game if you enjoy survival games, zombies and the opportunity to play some co-op stuff and if you go in knowing what to expect you'll have a blast - but it's definitely not for everyone.

But certain aspects of the game have completely ruined it in my opinion. First, fuel runs out in vehicles way too fast. Every vehicle in the game must literally use gallons per mile instead of getting miles per gallon. Second, all zombies should have been just the basic zombie. The developers' obsession with "boss level" enemies/zombies just makes the game too difficult and frustrating at times and ruins the game, especially when all deaths are final and permanent. And the fact that all weapons, melee and firearm, take damage every time they are used is insane. I broke a crowbar after using it against regular zombies maybe a dozen times. In real life, I could hit concrete as hard as I can with a crowbar all day every day and never ever break it. And a pistol I used in the game broke, didn't just run out of ammo, but broke, after only a couple dozen shots. If this game did not have Feral or Juggernaut zombies, guns never wore out, jammed, or broke, ammo was more plentiful, certain melee weapons like crowbars, aluminum and steel bats, and machetes never broke, fuel consumption in vehicles was more realistic for scale distances, vehicles could be repaired automatically when parked in a reserved space at your base if you had a community member with a mechanic skill, and it offered the kind of auto aim option seen in GTA V and GTA Online for non-scoped weapons, and allowed you to look through the scope and zoom in when using a scoped weapon, and you didn't keep getting asked to cover random npcs from other communities in suicide missions, and you didn't need a gardening skill to grow food in a garden, and home base was completely secure with no zombies ever able to get into your base, then this could have been a great game. Especially if it also offered easy ways to upgrade vehicles in the game without requiring a vehicle workshop that I seem unable to even add to my base in spite of having a community member with a 5-star mechanic skill, and a special kit that seems unobtainable. If you liked the first its pretty much the same but with a few tweeks. The graphics have improved and the base building/management has expanded further. Its fairly expensive as games go and you can even try it on gamepass on a trial if you haven't already done so.

One of my biggest issues is all the invisible walls. It's an open world, so there's literally no rational reason there would be invisible walls all over the place, but there are. It's not like it's empty unreachable areas the walls are keeping you out of either. There are often zombies or supplies on the other side of those walls. You can often find ways around the invisible wall if you go (very) out of your way to do so. Last time I played I crashed my car into an invisible wall. The car got stuck in the wall and I couldn't get it out. I had TONS of resources in that car and I couldn't even access the back to get them out because the back clipped into the ground.

Almost every single part of this game is worse than SoD1. The co-op was why I was excited for this. It really failed to deliver. To be blunt, I'm getting real tired of Microsofts crap. The only "decent" games they've put out are Halo 5 and Gears 4. Neither were particularly "good" but I liked them well enough. After this long line of half hearted or outright cancelled games, my friends and I may be moving back to Playstation 4 as our primary console of play. The state of games on Xbox is just sad right now.

After couple of hours this game becomes addictive. You cannot stop - and it is designed in such way. There is no pause.
How to describe this game? It is difficult, but: tower defense, survival, RPG.
    Pros:
    - Pretty deep RPG elements
    - Coop: map belongs to host, 4 players, loot sharing by dropping at the host base or on the floor, fight together, simultaneous and personalized loot locations and loot itself, facilities sharing, community materials sharing
    - Map exploration: well developed
    - Building and upgrades: well developed
    - Sound design is very good
    - Art and graphics are very good
    Cons:
    - Coop could be developed further - this area was underexplored. I wish that progress could be shared and map, though hosted, could be used even if host is offline. This was never done (or I have not seen decent implementation) before.
    - Coop limited because of the focus to cover solo/single player audience. When playing coop this looks artificial.
    - Bugs
    - Community roster cannot be shared. We could create and join community and then community could be synced to all players and every coop player could be bring something to the community and have almost equal rights. There could a place for drama, like going rogue etc.
    - Controls could be improved.
When reading reviews you could probably see that solo players will give it lower scores. But even if you do not like this kind of games I encourage to give it a try - potential is here, I would expect coop modes to evolve into dedicated gameplay.

If a game had bugs and was rubbish you simply wouldn't play it but this game even with it's flaws is so addictive you put up with the bugs. Because of it's permadeath system there is no lets give that a go, nope that didn't work lets try a different way, instead you have to try and make it go perfect right off the bat or your favourite character may end up dead with no way of ever getting him/her back, once you're dead you stay dead just like if it was a real life apocalypse, decisions have to be made fast with no guidance, there is no sat nav so you need to know where you are going before you head out which may annoy anyone under 30 who can't read a map, this is no brain dead FPS your brain will be constantly active trying to think of multiple things to do at the same time which when you first start out may seem overwhelming. Sometimes ( quite alot actually ) you will have multiple missions with time limits that just aren't possible to do all of them so you have to decide who you abandon and who you save making everyones game uniquely different. Some people say there is no story ? Come on people if you woke up tomorrow in a zombie apocaylpse where is your story or would you be more worried where your next meal was coming from, I'm going to lean towards the the latter, the story is what you make it. If this game had no bugs it would be a 10. This a must buy for any intelligent humans out there but if you're a brain dead zombie then you might want to pop over to res 2 for your 5 hours of content. Building a community is a challenge with regular citizens each with personality traits and strengths and weaknesses. Someone may be a great gardiner making growing food easier but they may be difficult to get along with making the community morale suffer. Choices like banishing this person could be tough as they may come back in a hostile group of survivors for revenge.
Blood plague is new and adds sickness to anyone bitten by a red eyed Zombie. Needing medical staff, chemicals, plague samples to craft a cure. But the cure isn't a dime a dozen so its a tough choice when used. If you enjoyed the first State of Decay you will enjoy the second.
But the co op, the single most asked for thing for a sequel is a broken mess. Normally I wont ding a game for MP being bad this hard but this was THE thing in terms of sales points for SoD2 and its a big FAIL. There is simply no excuse for releasing any game this broken in terms of MP when MP is the selling point over its predecessor. So in my opinion and personal experience 20 hours in, the game in SP is fine. But the co op that my buddies and I couldn't wait for is a slap in the face to fans.

State of Decay 2 is an open-world zombie survival simulator that is engaging, despite several bugs and glitches that can break the immersion. Players scavenge for supplies, engage in trade or threats to other communities, maintain & improve your home-base, help out other players via the radio calls, or role-play like iconic survivors from movies and TV to act like a total dickhead during the apocalypse. State of Decay 2 is only $29.99 and delivers far more content than some AAA publishers have done (Sea of Thieves; EA Battlefront; Mass Effect Andromeda; etc.). Here's a quick run-through of the good and bad, as well as some improvement ideas for later on:

    Pros:
-Game-play has improved since the first one; adding a new blood plague to confront as well as hostile survivors.
-Expanded map size: There are now 3 maps to explore in the world of SoD2, but they aren't memorable.
-Base-building has been improved since the first game, but I still wish we could build our bases in a similar way to the Sims franchise.
-4 Player Multiplayer Coop has been introduced, and makes playing with friends fun as hell. Playing with a buddy was fun as hell, since we both acted like Negan from TWD and would straight up go beast mode on any survivors that were a threat to us. It does feel easier to navigate the world with a friend, despite an ~400 yd tether to the host player, which didn't seem like an issue to myself.
-Graphics & sound design are improved, but nothing memorable.
-Combat (especially gun-play) feels smoother and more satisfying with every kill.

    Cons:
-BUGS! In my copy I didn't have stutters or crashes, but I did notice more bugs when playing online. For example, when I went to turn on my flashlight my character model would somehow be blocking my view but when I played solo this issue never occurred. Also I had bugs where door textures would be open, yet there was a closed invisible door I had to freaking open which has gotten quite annoying. I am not surprised this came out buggy since SoD:YOSE still has bugs with shadow effects they didn't bother to fix.
-Lack of story: while the first game had a small sense of a storytelling, this game doesn't feel up to par in storytelling as the first one. After I completed the tutorial I instantly forgot about the story-line of helping one of my survivors who had the blood plague and looking for other survivors out in the world. Story wasn't the strong suite in the first game, so I didn't bother following up in the sequel.
-Online play rewards feel cheap: As I stated playing with a buddy is fun as hell, but I feel like they should've added a radio for transport if you scavenged materials or fuel and you wanted to take it back to your base instead of your friends.

    Improvement Ideas:
-Add great multiplayer benefits, such as loads of ammo and medicine, rather than just Influence.
-Create an online trading market between player communities for supplies.
    -Fix bugs (duh).

Overall I believe, in this title, the game-play design of how to survive was able to triumph over the occasional bugs & glitches. This game improves upon the first one, but bugs and glitches hurt the game for new players and can distance them from playing. Sure if this was a $60 title I would be docking it down points since there are other titles that can give out the bang for a buck (God of War on the PS4, Zelda BOTW on the Nintendo Switch,*Insert X1 Exclusive here*), however this was an indie developer with the backing of a publisher to help broaden their vision of defining zombie-survival. For $30 I think it is a great deal for the value you get here, since they're gonna have updates to improve the game from here on. This title does take steps in the right direction, but hasn't reached its full potential.

*Edit: After playing for an extended period of time, I have unfortunately lowered my score due to technical issues that began to come more consistently, as well as the lack of rewards for beating the Legacy story-line.

This is an improvement over the first game in every possible way. The only big new feature is co-op. The random dialog between the survivors is great, really makes your community feel alive.
There are some bugs and the game loses a point for those, the bugs I've encountered are mostly just funny, some can be annoying but none have been game breaking so far at least.

    Bugs. Bugs. Bugs.

Once you load into a game, anything that changes(outposts founded, anything is built, doors that were open before you logged in) will not appear. I played the game for 3 hours before I even knew what the medical center looked like because instead of building it for me, the game preferred to just allow the NPCs to float in the air.

I could not assist any new players because as a visitor in their community I do not have access to a bulk of the menus. It also was not made clear that the store lockers are assigned to the players, not the community. This means that I can hop into others world and essentially steal their loot for my own community, telling them I found scraps instead of being honest about a decent weapon or backpack that I may of actually uncovered.

This game, even with the current bugs is really fun. However as I've continued to play the game and saw no changes to these bugs to the point that I know what causes them and how to remedy them, it's hard to believe this game was released without knowledge that they are in the game. Releasing a product and charging for the product, knowing the product isn't finished or polished beyond a rare occurrence, cannot/should not receive a score greater than 5.

A brilliant game nothing more to say. Sensual but very eficases mechanics, resource management, extreme tension assured and great design of enemies. If you like zombies, gore, sandboxes, action games, horror, and survival horror, you can play quietly. Now if you are looking for dying ligth or dead rising, this game is not for you. Jugalo will love you.

There are somethings removed from the previous game that were really great like calling out your members to loot the house you are currently in or call for back up, this is mostly removed in favor of online co op which should not have happened. The missions themselves are bad at first but after a while they get good, after picking a leader, the quests become dynamic based on what kind of leader you have but that takes allot of time to happen, by then people are already greeted to the repetitive grinding of food and supplies which might put most people off. lack of fast travel means means that you won't be able do all the quests that people in the world need and that will make them get angry at you and that leads to troubles down the road. Vehicles make moving within the map easier, limit of gas makes driving challenging, the vehicle controls are great but the physics of the car themselves are bad and lead to funny and annoying bugs.
To some this up, here is one of the cool experiences I have had in the game:
10 days in, my community was running out of food, so I went out with my favorite character on a scavenge hunt for food. on my way I got to a hostile community which started a fight between us, I won the fight but it cost me all my meds and my gun as it was now jammed, I picked their weapons which was a revolver with 7 rounds and a melee weapon which was like a machete. I wasn't finding any food so I radioed in to one of the friendly neighbors and they found me some food at a far town. I picked up a car and went there with half gas, by the time I reached the town it was midnight so my character was sleepy so my stamina was lower than normal and I ran out of gas in the middle of the street, zombies were coming at me cause the car sound attracted them, so I ran, running attracted even more zombies so I tried to fight them off witch the 7 rounds I had left, that was stupid cause the sound of the shots fired attracted EVEN MORE zombies! I started running again and I reached a ladder, I climbed up only to survive as my health was really low and I had 30% max stamina. I looked down and I was surrounded with a horde of around 30 zombies, with nothing left to do I shot a flare at the sky and waited for an online player to come find and help me and they did! With the help of the player I survived that and went out to get the food for my community. I felt like I was playing in an episode of the Walking Dead! :D
Things like these are what drive me back in the game, and now I'm addicted to it. I hope the devs fix the shortcomings like the lack of being able to call for looters to my place cause the core game here is fun.

Long Overview: The best way to describe State of Decay 2 is a diamond not yet polished and ready to be put into that ring, but is still a beautiful diamond nonetheless. The game is made as a sequel to the first game, and if you didn't like the first, you will probably not like this one. The core of the game bases itself on building a community to survive, upgrading your equipment to better defend yourself, loot buildings for supplies, and helping/recruiting/fighting other enclaves of survivors.

The base building is very similar to the first game. The building is modular with certain spots to build certain facilities. However, there are new improvements. There are now mods you can put on facilities that provide passive or active buffs, from a portable generator powering the facility it is equipped to, to a drill press used to craft certain ammo at a workshop. There is also a new noise meter that increased based on many factors, like the amount of building or people you have, which in turn increases the number of hordes and freak zeds around the vicinity of your bases. This is just one example of how the game has improved from the first with new mechanics. I do have a personal gripe with the tethering for coop. I have had times where my friend wanted to drive to a person to start a mission, and I needed to gear up back at his base, but the base was just outside the tether distance and pulled me back to him. I understand why it is there, as you should be helping the host and stay with them, but there should be an option to have it disabled for friends and have it enabled for other players for example.

However, there are still issues. From time to time I find zombies stuck and hidden in walls, cars going over bumps as if they have no suspension, and game freezing on rare occasion when opening the map while driving. While playing multiplayer, there can be freeze framing lag that causes you game to slow down and freeze for a few seconds and then catch up. There are also AI issues, I have had a few survivors die because they either walk into or stand and wait for a bloater to go to them and then proceed to sit in the gas until they die, just as an example. The only other issues are minor things you'd expect from a game just released. This is not a triple AAA game with a 500 million dollar budget or anything like that, so disregard a lot of the 0 reviews as many are misinformed or only talk about one negative and just slap the "game is garbage" line in, like seriously read some of the reviews and tell me how they have enough information there to justify the score they provided. A game should only get a zero if it cannot even launch or is a poor asset flip.

Overall, game is good for those looking for a zombie survival resource micromanage game and is worth the price if you enjoyed the first game.

The hope was to turn things around, make my base happy and grab some crucial supplies, whilst completing a mission, which was needed in order to keep one of my top characters from leaving. Just as I was completing the mission my accompanying base member perished dropping the morale to a further low. The enclave member then perished while we were making a break for a new vehicle ( I ran out of gas). Not to be deterred I hopped in the vehicle, low on energy and injured and headed back to the base in the dark, headlights on. I turned a bend, hit a bloater and the gas killed me. My main character died. Then I respawned at the base taking control of a different member only to find out my second main character had such a low morale that she was leaving. Now only 3 members left, all low ranking, infested and bloaters everywhere. I need to turn this around. I didn't so I restarted the game. Another 10 hours in and I have a bigger base, better characters and avoided a repeat of this scenario by the skin of my teeth. I love this game, fantastic. If you like the first you will love this. Does it need some polishing? Well of course, because survival games with base management is a tough nut to crack. There are so many factors that this game covers that it can be subtitled as Zombie Apocalypse 101. SOD2 literally covers almost every aspect of how to survive and the priorities one needs to make to survive. One example; do you forage for the much needed food, medicine, or materials needed to improve the morale or state of your current stronghold? Or do you answer the call for help from a stranger to improve ties to some unknown neighbors for trade? Undead Labs really took the time to create a game that shows your decisions do matter and it is those decisions that will affect how long you will last.

    Pros
SOD2 is an improvement on the first installment of this series. The graphics are better, the controls feel smoother and the combat is bloodier and more gruesome. I love improving bladed weapons just to see Zombie arms and heads fly across the screen. Each type of Zombie have a wider range of differences and it doesn't feel like I am looking at the same zombie over and over again.
The level up system and the traits of each character seem more polished and refined with the added bonus of each character is completely random and not every member of your group will level up the same way. I will say this STAY AWAY from Pack rats. Idiots take up an extra bed for their crap.
The community feels more alive. The members will voice their opinions and give encouragement or hatred for almost every decision. Undead Labs also included what I feel to be an natural inclusion to everyday survival which are accidents in the home. Lets face it people screw up and make mistakes and sometimes what you just scrounged around for pays the price.

Love the death feature as well, nothing like a kick in the nuts when you lose your best character to a stray pack of walkers with a feral or bloater in the mix to keep the fear alive.

Cons - The missions do get tedious and monotonous but lets face it not much to do in an apocalyptic setting then scrounge, save people, protect your home and rinse and repeat. At least there are no more siege missions with a Juggernaut showing up while fighting 20 zombies, well not yet anyway.
Driving could use some work and the cars are about as brittle and a wet paper bag. So if and when you find a car, suv, or a van; cherish it and keep some tools handy because it will get dinged up or explode from running over one to many zombies or fences.
Decent outpost can be few and far between and the grind it takes to increase the number is tedious with the favor grind taking a good junk of time where it seems like the commercial showing day 600 doesn't seem like an exaggeration since there is the nice football field base that costs 3500 favor to colonize.

All in all this game is definitely worth a look considering it really put into perspective how life during a zombie apocalypse will be managed and the decisions you make do matter. Yes there are some bugs and room for improvement but nothing to be discouraged about and can easily be fixed with a patch or two. This game is a grind and a half but the end result for both bases and characters is worth it. I have already put in 50+ hours remade 5 communities and lost so many characters and still coming back for more. Enjoy the Zombie Genocide and smash some heads for me, Happy Hunting.

This is not a story-oriented game. You can think of this game as GTA (similar open world, driving, and shooting gameplay) meets Sims (community management, base building, resource management) meets survival zombie game. Your characters permanently die once they are dead but you can recruit new ones. You upgrade a lot of different aspects of your gameplay, from upgrading each individual's stats to giving them perks, to upgrading your base's buildings, resource upkeep, upgrading regular vehicles to armored cars, etc. nearly every aspect of your control you can upgrade which is what I liked. Once you beat the game you can take three of your survivors and start a new community. Depending on which type of character was your leader when you beat it the first time, you unlock a special perk that adds onto your new community with up to four different perks. So you can beat this game 4 times. There are 3 different open world maps you can navigate and every character is different than the last. There are some issues that need to be ironed out like some bugs but if you go into Settings and switch to Offline so that nobody can join your game you will see way less bugs, at least from my experience I rarely run into any issues in Offline mode. If you liked the first State of Decay I think you would like this but it plays out more similarly to the Breakout DLC in SOD1, where it's just an open world map with little story, opposed to the main campaign. With the Ultimate Edition you will get some item unlocks that will be included with purchase but way more in a DLC pack coming later. There is also a completely different campaign DLC that will be released in the future also in the Ultimate Edition pack. All in all, I love these games but there are not for everybody and things can get really hairy, your community can just start dying, people can leave your community, etc. if you're not on top of things but once you get a good grasp on the cake it becomes much more manageable. The game is glitchy as hell, knocking you out of the game even in single player over and over again at the worst times, like while you are driving and then you load in, up the road from your car (it does this in single player as well). To make it worse because of the disconnect and stuttering you can end up totaling a car in the middle of nowhere so that you can enjoy a long hike back to base without the resources you were out collecting.

Also don't bother taking anyone with you when you go out of base, half the time they won't attack the zombies till they have taken several large bites out of your back stolen your wallet and gave you a swirly. To make followers worse they can be in perfect health and armed to the teeth only to be killed by a foul tempered butterfly. Having said all this, the idea of a good game is in here somewhere, IDK where but it is, but fu*k the NPC **** man at least space that sh*t out a few minutes PLEASE.

Generally State of Decay 2 looks more like a remaster of the original game than a true sequel. It just does not expand the formula enough and still contains too many repetitive activities that make you go through the motions for the sake of getting it done. That’s why I recommend playing it in short sessions. I have no doubt that people unfamiliar with the first State of Decay will enjoy the second one much more, as everything will be new to them.
