Star Wars Battlefront II has had quite a bit of bad press recently and most of it is deserved, but I will say that this new installment in the Battlefront series has seen some significant improvements over the last game and in my opinion this is a better game than its predecessor. The biggest improvements come in the combat side of the game. The combat has a lot more variety this time around and everything just feels more fluid. In fact the gameplay on the whole feels more fluid and responsive throughout and the variation in each mode is fantastic and this definitely keeps you coming back for more time and time again. Playing online is without a doubt the best way to enjoy this game and thankfully everything in multiplayer works and holds up really well. I will say though that the progression when playing online feels extremely limited and you only feel that you really progress if you pay for it. I was also disappointed with how long it takes to unlock the most iconic characters in the game, and the amount of grinding needed can be very frustrating. They have however managed to nail the lore in the game extremely well and the best thing is that the story remains interesting and gripping throughout, which in turn makes a good single player campaign even better. The presentation side of the game is very impressive and I must admit that they’ve done a fantastic job here. Visually the game can look absolutely stunning at times, and the sound design is some of the best I’ve ever heard in a game, which is very impressive. At the end of the day the bad press the game has received recently will without a doubt put a lot of people off, but if you look past this and scratch beneath the surface a little bit you will find a very fun and enjoyable game. Don’t get me wrong the game is far from perfect but they have managed to make significant strides and improvements over the last game. If you’re a fan of Star Wars then you will love this game and when it’s all said and done it gets a lot more right than it gets wrong, so in the end it gets a recommendation from me. Expand

Having played through the campaign, as well as run a few hours of the flagship "Galactic Conquest" mode, I give this game a 7.5/10. Here's why:

-The lootcrate system is bad, simply put. Though if they hadn't withdrawn the paid-for currency, it wouldn't have been pay-2-win. Rather, the problem is that it makes the progression system somewhat "grindy". You don't level up for time played - you level up for how lucky you were with the crates.

-The gameplay itself is solid. All of the gunplay and movement feels solid and the modes and maps are very well designed. Combat occurs where you feel like it "should" occur, and the MP is packed with plenty of intensity. You really get the feeling of being in the middle of a Star Wars battle scene.

-The campaign is decent. It tells a somewhat vanilla story - a bit predictable, like every other Star Wars movie ever - but it's clearly a "Star Wars Story". I felt like the protagonist of a Star Wars film. Replayability is a bit debatable, but it's worth the time for at least one playthrough.

-In terms or graphics, the game is beautiful. It brings the Star Wars universe to life in all it's detail and wonder. It's a real kick to be running around the MP maps, and see all the little details of the movies. Even Hoth... a map that typically ends up being bland due to everything being covered in snow/ice... looks beautiful thanks to the subtle details and shading. However, there is some stuttering in some of the "ambient" animations (why is that turbolaser skipping frames like a 90s sidescroller?).

All in all, it's a solid game that improves vastly upon it's predecessor. With the promise of free DLC in the future, I'm confident about my purchase.

I doubt Dice wanted this crap progression system put into the game, they have made a beautiful and fun game, but EA forced this bull on them, the game doesn't deserve all these zero scores, the progression system does, hopefully they change it

Giving this game a ZERO because of the lootboxes is some serious BS revenge-review crap.

If you don't like the lootboxes, don't buy them. You can play the game without in-game purchases and still have fun. Yes, it's a lame feature, and much of the reason I'm giving it 7 stars instead of 8. The game itself is very well done. The Starfighter PVP is fantastic (and the reason I play).

Highly undeserving of the petty 1s and 0s.

Due to the Micro suspensions I have decided to purchase the game, if the Evil Micro’s are reinserted In a way that resembles EA’s previous attempts to ABUSE customers I will promptly boycott the game. Until then the game as it stands after launch day is indeed a great game. Campaign is a lil short and could be better, feels like it’s purpose is to condition people for the MP but is sertainly worth your time and is entertaining, very very well Acted by the beautiful leading lady. The campaign should be experienced by every gaming StarWars fan. THE MP is really well implemented in general and actually feels pretty well balanced , map design and variety keep things feeling fresh as does the variety of game modes. Graphics are stunning, espically on the XBox one X on a good 4K HDR tv.
Sound design is almost perfect, the feel and sound of firing your laser blaster is especially satisfying.
Please every one ! Do not let up on EA , do not let your guard down and let’s keep our voices herd EA is a financially successful company year after year and does NOT need to ABUSE customers in this way for Battlefront II to be a huge success. The micro’s are nothing more than unchecked GREED .
I suggest people who are interested in the game to buy it and rrenjoy it , if the Greedy Micro’s come back in an unfair way , then at that time we should all fully boycott. We should then have a WORLDWIDE LOGOUT EVENT ! and not return to the game until they correct it for good. Major congrats to Dice and the others for accomplishing such a great game , it’s such a blatant Shame that EA has done this to everyone SHAME ! SHAME ! SHAME ! ...... SHAME ! On EA ! ! ! ! ! ! !

I agree they are damaging the overall experience of the game, and well just not good implementations. The game doesn't deserve scores of 0, 1, 2, and 3 seen frequently on metacritic. Those are score usually reserved for games that are broken and unplayable. The game is functional and from a technical perspective good. The graphics are decent and framerate feels smooth. The thing is the game just isn't all that fun to me. I've played roughly 12-15 hours now and I just can't play the game more than 60-90 minutes at time, sometimes not even that. I just get bored with it. The only game modes I enjoy are Heroes vs Villians and Star Fighter Assault.

I didn't think Battlefront 1 was great but I had high hopes that Battlefront 2 would build upon it and be a fun multiplayer experience. Needless to say I was disappointed. If I had to do it over again I would have waited for a sale to pickup this game. I'd be satisfied paying $30 max for this game, but not $60. Given how EA responds to criticism and negative reviews I have little hope any improvements will be made to this game.

Before I start, I’m going to make it clear that I’m not a star wars fan…
I’m reviewing this game as a game.. license unattached…
And if you’re not a star wars fan, this 4 and a half hour long campaign is a gigantic waste of your time.
This is easily the most generic garbage I’ve ever suffered through...
IT plays, is delivered, and feels like a 2010 ps3 game…
The campaign tells the story of Iden Versio mostly... though not primarily…
Infact half of the time not at all…
You get a bit of a perspective of the dark side, as shes the commander of the inferno squad
but the game make a huge mistake of following different paths of multiple heroes... characters you know...
minor spoilers, but youll be light sabering it up which was easily my favorite parts of this campaign…
And these great moments are interrupted with space battles that go on way too long and an uninspired least fun of all time linear 3rd person shooting adventure where you can play around with the idea of cards.. As every hero you play in the campaign has their own special moves on a cool down they can use... but as iden you can swap these cards for different grenade tpyes for example... or perk like health regeneration and shield...
I found the campaign to be a great way to introduce the mechanics of the online and for that reason is worth checking out… but nothing more as it’s just a bunch of shoot everything in your way while you get to a checkpoint, and defending positions while an npc interacts with an item… that’s it..
There are a few okay missions here and there… but none of them are ever fun... at all...
Again if you’re not a star wars fan just use it as a tutorial mode and get out of there...
There’s no fun, no meaningful story... theres nothing here…
Though completing the campaign does reward you with credits and loot boxes to give you a little head start online...
Thankfully the online unlike the campaign is fun and is this games saving grace
Online features 5 different modes, the 2 big ones 40 player classic assault which is objective based of defending and attacking positions or items and there’s the 24 player Starfighter assault, which is a bit like classic but in space…
these 2 game modes aren’t really what I enjoy in competitive modes and had me more frustrated with the pay to win feel of the game where players can all have more powerful cards, and again with 40 players running around you’re going to die pretty quickly in this mode if you’re a newbie..
You’re better off building yourself up in the other 3 modes first and coming back to these 2 later
I was afraid I was going to tear this game apart in my review until I played these much smaller game modes there’s blast with is 20 player call of duty style team death match, 16 player strike which is another objective based game mode,
All 4 of these modes you’ll be getting kills and earning points to bring in support from heroes and star craft to clean house and potentially turn the tables in a losing battle…
and then there’s my personal favorite 8 player heroes vs villains… where there is no saving up points..
Everyone starts as a hero character and it’s a game of attacking targets while defending your team mate…
This mode is a blast to me, and by itself changed my overall opinion of this game..
Everyone feels over powered... it’s just a matter of who can use their powers the best...
The controversy of this game comes mostly in the microtransactions which are currently disabled...
But there is a loot crate system where you can buy crates with credits earned in game from clearing challenges and finishing matches… and in these crates are cards, credits, and crafting materials…
Cards are bonuses you can attach to your characters... and this is what makes the game feel pay to win…
Your characters don’t get stronger by you using them.. They only get stronger by luck of the drawn…
Though you are able to craft cards of your choice with the crafting parts you earn and you can increase the power of these cards with these parts... though these are a bit rare
I don’t find these cards to be as big of an issue in smaller modes oddly because I feel youre given more space to rely on your skill as a player…
But in the larger modes youll definitely notice the buffed up players as their cards flash across your screen while theyre killing you over and over again with their upgraded grenades and turrets…
    its annoying..
Star Wars Battlefront 2 is a bit of a let down to me, and im not even a star wars fan…
But there is fun to be had here in its online.. Especially in its smaller modes...
I give Star Wars Battlefront 2
    a 6.5/10

But the credits payout after each match is a foggier mystery than the Caramilk. There isn't really a correlation between how well you did during a game and how much "credits" you earn. You can be average and earn 300 creds; be awesome and earn 400 (!!!) or just plain su ck but since you gained a level, you get 1800 creds.

The only thing that really bothers me are the atrociously long loading screens. Press the wrong button and you're up for a 2 minutes exit mode screen and another 2 minutes to get back in. Same thing if you're thinking about changing game modes. Even if you're not changing game modes, it takes almost 3 to 4 minutes between the end of a scenario and the beginning of the next.

It totally kills the immersion factor. Maybe it runs faster on an Xbox S or X? Not going to bother buying one to check it out..

The game is as faithful an adaption to the star wars legacy as any other and the visual aspects of the game are still top notch. Multiplayer wise, the game is a blast IMO. Now is this a title that is going to hook you? Probably not, however it is a serviceable title with FREE updates that are still going as well as a fun multiplayer component that you can breezily hop in and out of.

That's the real problem though for me, there is no hook here other than the faithfulness to the star wars universe. I had hoped the story mode would be engaging, but it is anything but that offering a bland adventure that finds you hopping from one shooting gallery to the next.

Overall, Battlefront 2 isn't the hit EA was surely hoping for however it is still a fun time with barely enough content to pass the time and enough fixes to not call it a complete and utter failure...

The company in the game is not required at all and is only needed to get acquainted with the many abilities of the game + a couple of heroes + a couple of space fighters. The story itself is extremely secondary and boring. It was especially humiliating to play as Luke Skywalker, who just cut down bugs, it's ridiculous.

The arcade mode is downright dull, including the scenario, which is just for practice for multiplayer. The multiplayer is a little better, but looking at the general situation with class customization, one thing can be understood - the community lost, although it naively thought that it won. There are very few modes active online, there is an imbalance between the forces of Darkness and Light in favor of Darkness, there are few cards, and there is very little variety and tactics in battles. Microtransactions have not been removed from the game, there are two currencies, and cosmetics are not imported + there are no new updates and game support is at a minimum level.

This is not a loss for EA, it is a loss for the community. Although I played for a couple of weeks, I'm fine. For once. Glory to Ukraine!

    - The sounds of Star Wars is spot on. Voice acting is very good.
    - The campaign feels like it's very high quality
    - Smooth 60 fps gameplay

    Cons:
    - Shooting is not very accessible on console. The reticle is basically a dot, which unless you are very good at the controller, you will end up missing a lot of shots by a hair, even with "aim assist turned on". Every shooter should use Halo controls with big reticles - I don't know why games like this or GTA5 use the smallest dots for as it's bad for people with poor vision as well.

    - Restarting a level after dying has a 5-second delay in single-player, which got really annoying in some hard sequences in the campaign. It keeps asking you to change your cards and weapon loadouts every **** time.

    - Strafing is extremely slow, even if you're not crouching. I have no idea how to dodge in this game at all. Not a clue.

    - You are often vastly outnumbered in the campaign. In a corridor, this is fine because you can funnel enemies in a choke point, but in a forest it kind of sucks because they just surround you and your AI teammates do nothing to cover you.

    - Levels are not built for exploration honestly. There's a lot of dead-ends that are only there for enemies to come out. This makes levels very linear, but you waste a lot of time checking out these alternative paths and they all lead to nothing but dead-ends. In the more open areas, exploring too far off the beaten path just threatens to kill you in 10 seconds. Wonderful EA. Just Wonderful.

I can't even comment on the microtransactions - I haven't even tried multiplayer - but the single-player campaign feels compromised by the multiplayer aspects of the game.

First, i don't know why i even still buy fps games on console (that's because i don't own a good pc) because its a S**t to play with a controller plus there are ppl who uses mouse+keyboard and thats frustrating so i will make my analysis ignoring this fact.

The battle points system sounds good but its only good for the above average players who manage to get enough points and use them properly. If you are bad you will never get one, and if you get you will die fast with if because... well, you are bad...
Also on the first pvp matches you will notice being killed by people with 3 top cards while you have we'll... zero. This system is a disgrace for online gaming, should be like Overwatch were all players can get all heroes and the only diference is the player's ability.
Couldn't pass the second map of the campaign (space fight) because i suck at piloting the ships with a controller to the point i barely kill one or two enemy ships till the time runs off. So i can't talk about the campaign.
Arcade mode is a very good idea, a game with divided screen 2019 is most welcome to play with a friend but there are a few maps and the maps are quite small...

I definitely would've hated this game a lot more if I played it when they still had loot boxes. As it stands, Battlefront II is just barely not terrible, and it's clear that there was a lot of effort put in by DICE, and the game could've been great if EA didn't rush the game out.

Star Wars: Battlefront II's campaign is a story starring a brand new character set immediately after the plot of Return of the Jedi. It has beautiful graphics and decent gameplay... but that's about it. I don't know. The online pvp is pretty fun I guess. This was the last game I beat in December 2019 and I'm hoping I start off 2020 better than I finished the year before it. Expand

Not as bad as when it was released. The multiplayer is decent but still could do with improvements. The campaign is pretty boring and i didn't even bother to finish it. Still could do with more content and tie-ins to the shows and movies. Too bad the damage is already done and this game is already forgotten by a lot of people because of the launch disaster.

I'm not a multiplayer person by any means. So the loot box grind walls never was a firm detractor for me. However, while the story of Iden versio is a fun one. Battlefront II is fan service and little else; much respect to the craft, the attention to detail and the wealth of content, but sadly it just isn't enough. It's starting to feel as if Star Wars simply isn't a franchise suitable for this type of sprawling, large-scale multiplayer experience. It doesn't have it in its bones, and if DICE can't find a way to make it work, we're fearful nobody can. [Issue#195, p.72]

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 will go down as one of the biggest screw ups in video game history. EA and DICE had the easiest job in the world and completely ruined it with the absolutely ridiculous and downright unacceptable progression system for multiplayer. Combine that with the incredibly boring, lazy, and cliche story campaign and you easily have the biggest disappointment of 2017.
