I've played for quite a bit and I have not even reached League play yet.

*This review does not include knowledge of league play*

    I highly recommend this game.

Please note, there are still some connection bugs they need to figure out. That is why this game does not have a perfect score.

Well to begin, I would say this; the game itself isn't that bad, but at the same time the game isn't that good. Meaning the game has good potential to be fun, but its plagued by a whole plethora of issues which I'll break down in a matter of moments.

Smite: Battleground of the Gods is a free-to-play, third-person MOBA, which is an acronym for multiplayer online battle arena. The basis of the game is that you play as Gods from various cultures that clash in an arena vying for glory, honor, and worship.

For game-play, the game breaks it down like this; You, and a team of 2 or more additional players trying to destroy the other team's Titan, or lower the other team's score, depending on the game mode. To do so, you need minions, which are A.I.(Artificial Intelligence), to sacrifice themselves to take down the Titan. On the way to the other team's Titan, are towers. Towers are stationary turrets that, when attacked by minions and enemy players, will shoot until destroyed. When all towers are destroyed, there will an enemy pheonix , which function similar to the towers, but will re=spawn a short moment later, which means you need to escort minions to the Titan to win the game.

As mentioned before, Smite uses Gods of various mythologies, like Zeus, Odin, and Anubis to name a few. Some people have said that might be a little unoriginal considering that they took mythological figures, instead of coming up with their own original characters. But at the same time, have most people considered that a famous comic book company called Marvel did the same thing with Thor and Odin, and made their own spin on it? I don't think so.

For most intents and purposes, I just described the base game, but how does it fell to play? Honestly, it feels great to move and utilize character abilities, but getting up and close personal is a bit messy. Damaging enemy players and minions is a hassle, for a number of reasons. which I'll break down in a moment.

Here's what you've been waiting for right? All the negative stuff correct? Yep, this is what makes the game horrible to play and experience. Which I'll put into a list and that's why it deserves the score of 5.
1.As I mentioned before, melee and ranged combat is a bit unsatisfactory, meaning to damage enemy players, you need a lock-on, which means, for melee you have be literally hugging the enemy player, or for ranged, you have looking at them dead-on for you to hit. Which also means, you're going to relay on your abilities more so than your standard attack.
    2. Game modes are maps, which they're only five maps/game modes. There is a MOTD, which I think translates to Match or Mode of the Day, and usually offers up something different using one of the five maps. But unfortunately, that means that these are the only maps/modes in the game, and that can get stale pretty quick. Hopefully in the future, maybe there will be like a Capture the Flag or King of the Hill type mode, but for right now that's it.
    3. A large amount of characters, like Xbalanque and Fenrir, have abilities that distort your vision, put a DOT on you (which stands for Damage Over Time), and generally incur huge damage, ruin and destroy any chance of having a fair and fun experience.
    4. As I said before, minions have a large impact on the game, but at the same time, the whole game shouldn't revolve around them. Getting kills in the Arena type game mode rewards you five points, but minions rewards your team with one point. Minions come in groups of six, so instead of getting kills, teams will often brute force minions into your goal, and soar ahead in the match.
    5. As a follow-up in points 3 and 4, matches will usually snowball. Meaning that the other team will get ahead with a gigantic lead, and your team can never catch up.
    6. And this is the final negative point. The community are possibly the worst people to deal with on a daily basis. I mean, I'd rather get tea bagged in Halo, or yelled at by some kid in Call of Duty, but the fact of the matter is, the community isn't skill-wise terrible, but demeanor terrible. What I mean is, that the real enemy isn't the other team, it's your team-mates! If you screw-up, even just once, they won't resist the chance to sand bag you. Not just with a microphone, but with chat commands as well! What's even worse is, even if you avoid somebody in the game, the matchmaking, which now that I think about it should be point 7, but the matchmaking is so bad, you'll get paired with the same jerks that you just assaulted by.

Smite: Battleground of the Gods has great potential to be a good game, but unfortunately is marred by a ton of issues.

"SMITE" does something amazing in that it brings a complete MOBA experience to consoles. It does so without sacrificing any of the complexity, difficulty, and competitive glory inherent to the genre. The best and most surprising part of all? It's free-to-play.

Now when people hear the words "free-to-play" their minds understandably go to the question, "yeah, but what are they holding back for microtransactions?" The answer is the heroes. Still you get nice rotations to help alleviate, the occasional periods where they'll make all the heroes available at once, and nice rental periods. There are other things like skins you can spend money on, but all of that is optional. You can still have countless hours of fun without spending a single cent.

Getting to master each of the diverse, large cast of characters is a blast. Finding that one that fits your play style is all too satisfying. Each one has their own pros and cons. The game makes it up to you to figure out the best way to use them. It makes for a remarkably well balanced experience.

MOBAs do kind of have an intimidating reputation for chewing up newcomers and spitting them out. I, for one, found SMITE to be quite accessible. However, if you truly want to be one of the best and dominate the battlefield, it's going to require a lot of time. Mastering all of the game's elements is a pretty daunting task. Yet, the game greatly rewards you for doing so. If that's not so much your thing though, and you'd rather just jump in from time to time for a game every now and then, SMITE still delivers. It's a great go to game that will a nice slot in your multiplayer rotation.

The game modes are diverse and fun. They require strategy and full participation. Taking out objectives on your way to an enemies base for a big boss battle while being attacked by the enemy team is tense and fun in all the right ways. My personal favorite mode is Arena, which pits two teams against each other while they escort minions to the other teams goal. The wide open battleground makes for a great place for heroes to clash. While teamwork is rewarded and often encouraged, you can still have fun playing with randoms.

Simply put, SMITE is an excellent game. One that shows the potential for MOBAs on consoles like really no other attempt has. It's got depth, strategy, and enough content to keep you coming back. It's accessibility makes it great for newcomers curious about the genre, and it's deep enough for hardcore MOBA fans to get engaged. Mix in the fact that it's free-to-play and it's almost nonsensical to not give it a shot.

Being free is nice and all but since the game is pretty much a waste of time, I can't give it a high score. Sorry dudes. But time is much more valuable than money and you wont be getting that back when you play a crap game. If some one gave you free food then that's great... Unless it's a plate of dog crap. Then it's just insulting...

I know the micro transactions in this game are not nearly as bad as many other micro transaction games... But that still doesn't mean much. At the end of the day they are still micro transactions...

Even if they are cosmetic only it's a problem. Hear me out. Remember old fighting games where you would unlock costumes for the fighters by completing challenges in the game? That was great! That gave you some drive to actually play the game and earn unlockables through hard work and effort. With micro transactions you just buy them... Any idiot running around with a cool outfit just got it in some weak card pack or something that they got with micro transaction real life money. It's not like they earned it in any respectable manner... You wont think that the player is a bad@ss for having that armor or outfit...

Also... The devs only have so much time to make the game. Time is precious and if the devs spend time making a micro transaction system then they are wasting time that could be spent on actually making the game better.

The visuals and music are meh... The story is meh... The replay value is meh... The multiplayer balance isn't there...

Just because it's free doesn't make it good guys. AM2R is a great metroid fanmade game and I would give that game a 8 or a 9. It's all about the quality guys...

I was afraid that my levels and work done on pc wouldn't translate to console, but Hi-Rez (being the benevolent and loving company that they are) gave me all my levels and all of my gods for free, as well as sick exclusive zeus skin.
The game play is tight, like super tight. I've never played a MOBA (and trust me I have over 200 hours on all of the major MOBA's out today) with as much precision and dedication to player skill. Thats not to say that newer players are unable to join in the fun. Many gods have easier kits allowing newer players to really get a feel for the game before they progress to more advanced MOBA archetypes.

I could go on for literally pages about how Smite is the best MOBA experience you will have as a PC or Console gamer, but like all video games the only true test of whether or not you'll like it is by playing it yourself. Go and download Smite on Xbox One for free today, you will not regret your decision

Great game. It really doesn't have many game modes, or maps for that matter. Which is a drawback. Another downside is the graphics are crisp and clear, but not what you'd think of as a current gen game. Now that we are past the bad points, I should explain why I give it a perfect 10. Which is a drawback. Another downside is the graphics are crisp and clear, but not what you'd think of as a current gen game. Now that we are past the bad points, I should explain why I give it a perfect 10. The game modes it does have, are extremely fun. I was never into MOBA, and still am not into many, but this one feels different. The leveling system is effective, and so is the buying system. There is a counter to just about anything, so nothing, not even the characters, is truly unbeatable. Now EVERY game has this is one way or another. Nothing can always be perfectly even, without there being only one thing. Say CoD, some guns are much stronger than others, so you're going to use that gun, or something that can compete with it right? The concept stands in Smite. You have the characters that are VERY strong, but aren't unbeatable. Now, if you plan on playing, let me give you a note of warning. Some characters are beyond annoying. Whether the fact they kill so fast, or are so hard to kill. There is always a drawback. Say the stronger characters, the ones that will 2 shot you, they have so little health, if you can land the hits, you can do the same to them. Another great thing, that interested me in the first place, is the fact it is a free to play game, with OPTIONAL microtransactions. You don't have to buy the other gods. You can unlock them without paying real cash. And it isn't as if you have to go on a hardcore grind to ever get them. Play maybe 12 matches of the primary gamemode and tada, you have enough points to get another god if you wish. I rarely encounter server issues. A last point to make here is the community, some people are hostile, this is in every game. But most people are cooperative, and want to work together to win the match. The community for the most part is welcoming of newcomers, and will coach them. The only place you will find people hostile to newcomers is the Ranked league, which by the time you unlock it, you wont exactly be new anymore. Expand

Having said so, SMITE provides hundreds of characters to choose from while allowing you to test every single one of those characters (and their respective skins) on a practice mode called jungle practice, which is a huge plus to me as someone who started off without the game's ultimate god pack (one that includes every single current and future god for a very fair price of 29.99 USD). Aside from its huge, diverse cast, SMITE also provides a decent sized item shop that many MOBAs typically use. For those who haven't played a MOBA before, this item shop is found right where you spawn during the start of the match, and it serves as a way to spend the gold you earn as the match proceeds--these items can augment your character's attack, defense, resistance to crowd control, the list goes on--but most importantly the shop can serve as a way to counter the enemy team's characters and their abilities through thorough itemization and these special items called "relics" that can be activated by the player in order to become immune to damage, immune to crowd control, teleport... again, the list goes on (MOBAs are a bit jarring to get into). All of this information is just a slither of what you can learn while playing SMITE, and if i were to sit here and jot down everything, this review would take days. Despite all of this complexity and this diverse cast of hundreds of character or "gods" SMITE can be frustrating and it can be a tough experience if you wish to ever part from casuals into the ranked scene where everyone is trying hard to reach their goals. This frustration often comes from miscommunication with teammates, inability to win games where your team may have a disconnected player, or simply feeling as though the enemy team is straight up superior--as matchmaking can be disappointing at times. However, these issues are found in every single multiplayer game ever, and as i believe that a game should not be judged solely on the fact that sometimes a teammate can get toxic, i consider SMITE to be a great game deserving of a solid 8. The only reasons that hold this title back are the questionable balance changes that happen once every certain patches (although that doesn't mean the game's balancing is broken or even "bad"), but also an amount of bugs and crashes that can happen throughout your experience. If you are on the fence about trying this game out, i recommend it, and if you ever wished to play a MOBA SMITE is a great first title to start with, and the bugs/balancing will not bother you except every long while.
