Not horrible, not great and defiantly not excellent. Ryse is mildly entertaining for 3-5 hours before repetition takes its course. There just is not enough game content to merit a 60 dollar sticker price. I recommend playing Ryse at your buddies house during intermission of the hockey game and nothing more.

Gostei bastante desse jogo.

Granted I certainly didn't pay $60 for this game, but at the bargain price I got it for, it provided me with a solid week of fun playing through the campaign on regular difficulty and then on the highest difficulty. This was followed by an additional week of going through the multiplayer (which, on Xbox is still playable; I was getting matches 3 out of 4 times).

There is a lot to be desired in the levelling up system (half-baked doesn't begin to explain it's ineptitude), but it's a fun romp with an aesthetic and time period (albeit, stupidly historically inaccurate) that is often not seen in games.

All, in all, it deserves a slightly better score than the average here, but seeing how you can pick it up for the price of renting a movie, it's definitely worth at least going through the campaign on regular difficulty.

Have fun, just don't expect to get a lifetime's enjoyment out of it.

Horrible. This game is Golden Ax Beast Hunter (xbox 360) with a story line. Graphics are next gen quality, but the repetitive/ uninspiring combat drags this game down...way down. The RPG system feels completley useless. if you are after achievement points, and can get the game for 10 bucks go for it.

Ryse: Son of Rome is an awesome game. The gameplay may be repetitive, but the story is one of the best I have played in a long time. The multiplayer is also quite addictive to say the least.

The camera is horrid, I see more butt cheeks than I can see a field of view, and God forbid you get near a corner or smaller area...you see nothing but what's in straight in front of you while you get combo'd to death by flurry of strikes. The combat style is very cool, but it does get old, it becomes a norm to get the same 5 or so executions and then turns into kinda blah with a few surprises here and there. Sometimes the controls become lagging and so things will happen late, or you'll be hit/interrupted and THEN your command goes off, normally leading to even more damage. Deff needs to be updated at least 1 more time, but all in all, it's a Rome game with awesome graphics just the play style gets old. Would recommend renting this not buying, seeing as you can beat the game in around 20-30 hours (I did on the 3rd difficulty) and the multiplayer is just a grind fest with even MORE rinse and repeat to it. Graphics are amazing. Probably the best of all the next-gen games so far (across all the platforms). Story is good, not great. Action is a lot of fun. Could use more variety in terms of enemies. Some leaps in story logic. Needs multiple playthroughs to fully build your character.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Game looks great. I liked it in the story, but Spoiler: I do not like that in the story added gods, what they affect, fly, etc. I think that they're special and I do not need them enough in God of War.
The game turned a little arcade. The game should be more mature, bloody, ie more real. A good example is the series Spartacus.
Games such a plan and themes of ancient Rome made extremely small.
It would be desirable to have more variety of enemies, and not crowd cloned dummy.
In general, I advise developers listen to the opinions of those who have written reviews and to continue to refine these aspects of the game.
And since everything is cool, I liked it!
I look forward to the continuation of the game.

This is a great game however the game play's pretty repetitive, takes only 5 hours to beat, and there's basically no replay value. The graphics are amazing though (shows the potential of next gen consoles graphics) and I loved the slow motion "300" kills. The story was pretty sic and the ending hallway part was completely bad ass!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played this game fully expecting it to be a let down in terms of gameplay and story. What I did not expect was that these were the two aspects of the game which I really found to be quite fun. The graphics are stunning in general and numerous times in the game, I would simply gaze at the environment and the light reflecting off of your characters armour. The gameplay, admittedly, does get rather tedious when you are playing for hours and hours on end. But when have a life outside of playing video games, you will almost certainly have a blast of a time slicing and dicing the 'barbarian' hordes for an hour at a time. The story is not at all overcomplicated or award worthy, but it will leave you satisfied and is a fun mix of 300/Saving Private Ryan/Gladiator. Multiplayer is fairly enjoyable, but it quickly becomes repetitive and simply serves as a way of showing off your fancy moves to your co-op friend.

One review in particular, by CVG's Nick Cowen, I particularly disagreed with. At no point did this game say that it was historically accurate (as far as you can use that term in regards to ancient history) in its portrayal of the sack of Rome under Boudica (atop an elephant). The story is simply fun and it draws upon some historical events as an inspiration. If anyone should be offended by this portrayal of ancient history, then that would be me as I am studying History and Archaeology at university. If Nick took so much offense as to Crytek's portrayal of the Ancient Roman period in Ryse, would he have the same misgivings about the critically acclaimed God of War series for not following Greek mythology to the letter?

Personally, l enjoy the finisher animations as well as the facial expressions on the enemy characters as they express pain (kinda dark I guess but tech wise, impressive). The combat, while simple, still has enough variation (timing, button combos, etc) and depth to keep your attention through the story and a well written campaign that scratches the surface of the corruption that eventually caused Rome's downfall.

There is a light RPG-ish system that allows you to unlock abilities and executions and you'll unlock most on the first play through. It has a co-op multiplayer component (2 players) where you fight in the coliseum and keep the crowd entertained. I always enjoyed fighting alongside someone and keeping the crowd cheering through some crazy scenarios. Understand that, when I rate this, I rate it as an adult with a life, not a "hardcore gamer". I have maybe an hour a day to play games and for me, this game is perfect. This is a casual game, it's easy to pick up and play, you can play offline or online, it looks great and has enough depth and variation in the combat to keep things interesting.

Buy it on PC if you are able. I was was surprised re-installing it on X1X to see it still locked to 720p. Oof. Looks great on PC though :)

Being an older game in Xbox 1 terms, it still looks good today, even outclassing some recent AAA releases. The story is your classic vengeful soldier story, but it works for this game. The voice acting is really good and it is easy to get engrossed in the story. The combat and finishers are fun once you get the timing of it all down. Also, Ryse showed off superb graphics, some of the best graphics I'd ever seen, proving that the Xbox One is very capable of running graphics intensive games, especially at a smooth frame-rate. And finally, I enjoyed Ryse because of the fact that it was almost entirely focused on single player as it delivered a superb story, and a fun linear campaign. Ever since the success of games like Minecraft, Skyrim, and the recent Grand Theft Auto games, open-world games have almost become the norm, as the gaming industry is being flooded with them, and not all of them are good. If you have ever played a hack-n-slash or beat-em-up game, you are already prepared for what Ryse has to offer. The gameplay is repetitive to say the least, but there isn't a game out there that doesn't devolve into repetitive button mashing of some sort. I don't understand the harsh criticism the game has garnered from both the media and the users, but you should make your own mind up about the game independent of someone else's opinion. I can guarantee you will NOT find a better looking game for the next gen systems before the end of the year and if you can honestly accept the game for what it is...an absolutely gorgeous, epically scaled yet repetitious and shallow hack-n-slash, then you'll probably get plenty of enjoyment out of the game. The Season Pass was well worth it playing online was a nice pace of change and helped me get better at playing the game and the timing nuances to get Perfect Combos.

I wish the Campaign had been Co-Op and more Animations and Executions would have given this game a more balanced feel.

The saddest thing was the fact that even with the games shortcomings I loved it and was waiting for the sequel that now unfortunately will never happen due to Crytek and all the companies inner turmoils.

But the reason for my high score is because it is just so damn fun, like Shadow of Mordor, you can just watch all day as you slice up your foes wave after wave (I'm not a psychopath I swear) the executions may be glorified quick time events but I don't care, it looks cool and it feels cool, I would rather have symbolic involvement in a killing blow than none at all, plus that bit at the end made me giddy as hell.
All in all a fun game that is addictive but don't expect GOTY material.

This is a brutal and addictive game which is a positive for me. Great graphics and a very interesting game play .This game is all about combat and blood with a roman named Marius. The finishers are are almost perfect and the combat is fun. The only flaw is the length which is not sort but not to long either. It left me wanting more because the story was remarkable!

This is to date, THE most ACCURATE and VISCERAL game putting a gameplayer into feeling EXACTLY what it was like to be a soldier or centurion in the Roman Empire late in the Empire.

I'm MOST impressed with the graphics, and also some of the historical accuracy. Not so much with relation to Commodus (yeah, he was a nucking futcase, but so were so many other emperors, but for some reason he gets the "bad guy" label every time), but with relation to Bodicea (Boodica), and her role in the uprising in Brittania, which proved to be such a thorn in the Roman sides late in their empire.

Also the portrayal of the "Goths" (in the "North land") was suitably terrifying, and really went a long way to putting you in the mindset of an average Roman Soldier at the time - you knew you were fighting with the world's most technologically advanced and tactically superior armies in the world, and yet, in this place in the North, you encountered warriors who were so fierce and terrifying that it basically undermined all your training and everything you knew about fighting.

Ok, so the Combat mechanics (a lot of people have already said this) was a bit simple, and a bit boring...

BUT.. I don't mind.. Because the STORY, the ACTING, is of such a high caliber that it really doesn't matter. YES, this does become a "Slash and Dash" game as a result.

So is it as engaging as another game like "Mirror's Edge", or "Mass Effect"?

No, it's not. But let's be honest, even THOSE games, the only reason they're "More complex" is because there's more controller buttons involved before an action happens.

Is this game "Slash and Dash"? Definitely.

    Does it matter?

    Not in the SLIGHTEST.

It's an INCREDIBLY detailed and accurate portrayal of the late Roman empire, with EXCEPTIONAL performances and scriptwriting, with a bit of slashing and dashing here and there..

Nine out of ten. on XBONE.

Ryse: Son of Rome, pertenece a esa categoría.

Ryse: Son of Rome es básicamente un hack and slash.

If there ever was a "Ryse 2", then plenty of additions would have to made. "Son of Rome" is an enjoyable action title that lacks variety. If your expectations aren't high, you'll probably have a good, gory time with this one. It's the only Xbox One game that adapts the PS4's emphasis on storytelling and cinematic cutscenes. I would give it a 7.3 out of 10.

If the game is going to be remembered for something, that's going to be the graphics, which were great. There're some other good things like the gameplay of the combat or the level desing that are worked out. However, all the good things this game has are covered by all his weakest points.
The story is really short (only eight levels) and simple. Scriptwritters could have taken much more advantage of the setting; a story based on the ancient roman empire should have told much more. In addition, the online mode does not worth it, so the game experience is in general short.
Ryse: Son of Rome may not be a terrible game but not a great one neither... It's just a simple Hack and Slash title to have some hours of entertaintment.

    This game is a 6+.

I played it on my xbox one x, first of all this game gets a lot of bad rep, it's not really that bad. In fact, it's a solid game for a launch title, yeah it gets repetitive with its combat system, but the finishing moves are satisfying as hell. Let's talk about graphics now, THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL, ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, it's the first game where i was actually impressed with the graphics (I also own a ps 4 and let me tell you, Uncharted 4 got nothing on Ryse, yes I said it). Sometime I felt I was actually watching a CGI movie, it's that good. I can only imagine how good it gets on a decent gaming rig.

I got it on sale for 5$ brand new, so you should definitely check this one out, just out of curiosity of what Xbox one is capable of.

Fantastic game. Story is extremely compelling and graphics are amazing. Combat can become a little stale but overall does not diminish from the games integrity.

Game well on average. The game is not bad, the graphics are fantastic. But after you
finish it is very easy to get bored of multiplayer mode.

    Its basically a Technic Demo.

The story is good but the characters are flat and the game is very short.

The combat system is nice for me but only on the hardest difficulty and a good online mode with connection problems and a lot of DLCs.

    And thats all...

Gráficos bonitos, nada mais. História fraca, gameplay enjoativo, inimigos repetitivos, combos limitados....

The graphics aspect in this game is impressive, with highly-detailed character models, environments and some breathtaking cinematics. It’s definitely a showcase of the power of Crytek’s CryEngine.

The gameplay, however, can become repetitive, as it lacks a varied, deep and unique combat system. Even when there’s a certain difference between enemies, these all feel the same and it would be difficult to tell each other apart if it wasn’t because of their different physical appearance. The multiplayer mode can be fun for some, but the gameplay overall is not as great as someone would like.

The story is good, entertaining and very interesting as well. Its character development allows the player to get attached with the characters, understand their motives and feel like wanting to help them reach their goals, even with the story’s short 7-hour duration.

While it does not have the best combat system in a videogame, Ryse: Son of Rome doesn’t stop being interesting and fun to any player that enjoys a game full of violent battles, blood, a great story or simply to anyone wanting to experience the difficult lifestyle of a Roman gladiator.

These things turn out to be just ideas to fill in stretches between very linear level runs than fully fleshed-out options. Finally, the story is a passable roman warrior's tale with nice enough music. This game is mostly a visual treat. Expand

The environments of the game are still some of the best I've seen in any game. The large action set pieces are insane. Voice acting is pretty good as were the characters. The biggest indicator that this was a good game to me was the feeling of wanting more after completing the relatively short story. Overall, I'd recommend this to pretty much anyone who loves action games. If you're into story-driven narratives, maybe look elsewhere. Expand

Ryse Son of Rome Review: 5/10
Amazing time period, boring story, repetitive mechanics, but good looking. The problem is that there's nothing that kept me hooked in, also because of the very short and cliche campaign. The cooperative mode can be fun at times but not for long. There isn't much honestly...

    Story is good.
Gameplay mechanics are ok, my only complaint is; your hands and fingers get hurt and tired at some battles after pressing the buttons so many times, this game requires certain focus because enemies attack you from all sides, up to 5 enemies can be fighting you and you have to watch your guard, while you're in the middle of fighting one, another one attacks you from behind.

The camera angle in the fighting system is one of the major problems in this title. some times the main character miss the camera and conversely that cause a lot of difficulty during critical struggles.

Ryse: Son of Rome is a really good looking game, but at the same time incredible stupid. Thanks to the graphics and the amount of brutal combat the adventure managed to entertain, at least for a bit. If you find Ryse on sale it can be worth a closer look, but for a full price game it’s a disappointment.
