I liked the graphics, fighting, history, other than what we have seen game so comparisons are generated nonsense criticized but not enjoying the game, I want to see another game over Rome!

This is more of a tech demo than a game, its no way worth its premium price. The price will probably drop like a stone when more games start coming out for the xbox one. It looks good but gets really boring really fast.

Ryse is basically a tech demo. It looks amazing, but it plays like mud and is extremely boring. Gameplay is buggy, broken and boring. The story is mediocre at best. Overall, I'd say skip it until it reaches the bargain bin.

A pretty good tech demo obviously, but a pretty bad game on the other hand, repetitive and boring after 15 minutes of gameplay. Watching the videos will give you all what this "game" has to offer visuals, no need to buy it or even play it. The problem with only nice-looking games is that they won't remain nice for long, especially in this new gen.

So terrible. The combat is repetitive, and the storyline is generic. One of the worst launch titles ever. The only thing this game had for it was the graphics, in which the character models look terrible except maybe one.

It's got a story that rivals a Hollywood Blockbuster, and seriously it is graphically stunning. I found myself slowing down and walking around astonished at how beautiful it was. That isn't the only reason to play the game though, aside from the same moves and the QTE executions I found the game play fun. I like hack n' slash games so I understood what I was getting and found it enjoyable. The only thing I wish they would have had more variety in was the executions. I'm okay with QTE's now and again, but they did get repetitive towards the middle and end. Repetitiveness aside, they still looked amazing when it would down time, speed it up, hack off an arm and then face smash them with your shield.

For anyone who is on here saying it looks great and amazing but then gives it a 1-4 because of the game play it's sad. Scores for a game like this don't deserve to be dragged down by those who don't understand what they are getting.

If you like hack n' slash games and want to play one with a solid story and see what the next gen Xbox is capable of right now pick this up.

There isn't anything wrong with this either. Sometimes its nice to have a simple game that looks phenomenal and has smooth fluid game play. I have read a lot of reviews with people trying to wax philosophical about this game and its shortcomings. The reality is there isn't anything like this to compare it to on Xbox. So just ignore that noise! The reality is you get what you see with Ryse and if you realize exactly what this game is before you play you will not be disappointed! I have had an absolute blast so far with its uncomplicated, beautiful and brutal combat. I am generally a hardcore RPG player but this game really is hard to ignore! There's also the added plus of the gladiator mode. I'll be playing the fudge out of that once I'm done with the story. My only complaint is that there isn't much variety in the enemies. Dead Rising 3 is insane fun. Building crazy weapons and wiping out the zombie hordes is extremely addicting. Tons of side missions and good boss fights keep you playing. Just starting my 2nd play through so I can get the Megaman Suit. Yes, I said Megaman. The thought of getting the suit and Megablaster and wiping out zombies as Megaman puts a smile on my face.

Makes use of the XBox One's capability and as a game its a fun melee combat game with a fun and engaging campaign. Its not for everyone but is something I am enjoying and really love the Romanesque story telling and the voice acting in the campaign is very well done.

Its not an earth shattering innovative game but it does not get repetitive as for me as other as complaining about.

The idea of "buying gold" to get skills in the campaign strikes me as a bit silly and I don't really care for that. Hopefully that is not available for acquiring the multiplayer skills. I look forward to jumping into the multiplayer but that was not my main motivation for purchasing this game.

My main issues have more to do with the XB One and the time it took to DL the patch and then install the game.

Since the day I decided to buy an Xbox One, the game that impressed me the most was Ryse: Son of Rome. The graphics looked clearly next-gen, the setting of ancient Rome was awesome, and the vicious, bloody combat reminded me of God of War.
But as time went on, most of the feedback from game critics was negative. Combat driven by quick time events, repetitive combat, and a general lack of polish was what many claimed.
Regardless of the noise, Ryse was the first game to grace my Xbox One. And having spent 2 weeks with the game, despite it being a launch title, it will be extremely difficult for any Xbox One title to satisfy me and entertain me the way Ryse:Son of Rome did.
GRAPHICS (10): Any fears I had about the Xbox One not being powerful enough were washed away by Ryse. I mean, it's just beautiful. The level of detail in everything from the environments to the clothing is astounding. Nothing in the Xbox One launch lineup comes close to Ryse in the graphics department.
PRESENTATION (10): Besides the awesome graphics, Ryse's presentation is second to none. The story is very strong in Ryse, and Crytek made sure to deliver on dramatic moments throughout the campaign.
GAMEPLAY (9): The biggest criticism of Ryse was repetitive combat. Well, you play as a Roman soldier leading an army, so fighting is all you do. I mean, what else would there be to do? If critics wanna say Ryse is repetitive, then so is Halo, cause all you do is shoot the same aliens over and over again. That's not a criticism of Halo, it's just to illustrate how overblown the "repetitive combat" gripe is. And besides, the game does mix things up quite a bit. And as far as the quick time events, they are only used as execution kills after you have taken each enemy's health down to almost zero, so the combat system is far from just pushing buttons. The one fair criticism is the same enemies are used way to frequently, breaking some of the realism. Still, a pretty minor complaint.
CONTROLS(9): Controlling your actions is fairly easy and intuitive. The only control issue I found was as times it seemed I should have pulled off a defensive counter and I would still take a hit. But again, except for this minor gripe, controls are mostly excellent.
FUN(10): What makes Ryse fun is the intense combat. It's challenging and requires focus, especially when you are fighting 2 or 3 enemies at the same time. It's also a lot of fun to see where the story goes. I've played through the campaign twice, which I only do if a game is really fun.
FINAL SCORE (10): When you add it all up, Ryse: Son of Rome deserves the highest score I can give. The complaints are minor. And with an incredible story, next gen graphics, fun and challenging combat, and an overall kickass presentation, I don't know how it could have been better. I'll be hoping for the announcement of Ryse 2 in the future...

Ryse may have a vey straight forward combat system but tell me which hack and slash doesn't? Did such a combat system ever hold back high critic scores for games like Batman arkham or GoW? I will say this now I would have loved to see different weapon usage throughout the campaign but I also understand that you play as a centurion so shield and board make perfect sense perhaps in the sequel which I can only hope is made. I was forced to upgrade my character and executions to progress through the game. The graphics and sound are exceptional. This game is very graphic with brutal executions which brings up another issue I see in most reviews. There are dozens of executions in this game. How reviewers are stating that the same execution occurs over and over is not true. You unlock more executions as you level up. There are multiple single, double, environment and co-op executions with multiple variations. Yes there same arm is hacked off, but wouldn't you hack off the weapon wielding arm of your opponent?
On-line is a solid gaming experience as well that any skill level gamer can dig into. I almost did not pick up this game due to "Expert" review scores and would have missed out on a great game.

Developer Crytek of Crysis fame, the series known in part for it's incredible graphical capability that was said to test even the most elite of gaming rigs, once again show that they know how to make a gorgeous game. Even today Ryse is still one of the best looking games on the system or anywhere else for that matter. When it comes to presentation, they pulled out all of the stops.

When you're not gawking at the scenery you are engaging in bloody hack n' slash combat. Dispatching your foes with the brutal finishing "execution" moves provides visceral thrills. The game provides you with a way to juggle groups of enemies in a way reminiscent of the Batman: Arkham games, only a little more simplistic. Outside of the boss battles and higher difficulties the experience never really evolves much beyond mashing buttons until you can perform an execution. Once you've made it through your first fight you've already seen what you are going to be doing for the rest of the game. New enemy types are introduced every now and then, but there are still only a handful of them and they are basically just versions of the base enemy type that take a bit longer to kill. I do appreciate how some of them require you to use different tactics though, even if it is just to pad the game by prolonging the fights. Not that it's a very big deal in the end though. The game is only a few hours long so you'll likely have it beaten before things get too tedious. The execution system might be simplistic, but it's fun enough to carry you through.

A few other issues are noticeable though. For instance pulling off executions requires you to react to certain onscreen prompts related to buttons on the controller. Yet, even if you mess up the input the execution still plays out the same. You just get a worse performance score for it. Also, once a new enemy type is introduced you'll notice that it is identical in every fight that follows. I don't mean just in terms of how they act, but actually in terms of how they look. The same character model is used for each enemy type throughout the entire game. It's noticeably lazy and serves as the most obvious indicator of the game's biggest flaw; the content, repetition, and lack of variety make Ryse feel more like a downloadable title, as opposed to a triple-A experience.

While Ryse may really just be a glorified tech demo, it's at the very least a fun one. It's worth the afternoon it will take to complete and will make you marvel at just what your gaming console can do. The Roman Call of Duty-esque campaign with all of it's set-pieces and overblown, ultimately uninteresting (but very well acted) story sticks around just long enough to provide some brief, repetitious thrills before being placed back on the shelf. Should you want to get some more life for your dollar out of the game, there's a cooperative arena mode where you can hack n' slash with a buddy. There's a little more depth here as you can customize your gladiator's gear. It's a pretty shallow game, but it's certainly fun while it lasts.

The gameplay is utter rubbish. It could be fun to try and see some of the executions but grows more than stale after a few minutes. Playing the co-op multiplayer can be more fun since you have to coordinate sometimes with your partner but is shallow as hell and that doesn't help at all.

Since the story is ok and the production values are up high, one could enjoy a playthrough, but every person, no matter what kind of gamer he/she is will find it repetitive as hell. I found it pretty shallow and the one or two extra gameplay actions do not do much to compensate. The upgrade system is **** The powerup system is also **** Also its duration is about 6 hours. You can see the half-realised ideas from the previous state of the game (Kinect-only) such as the shooting or the legion thing.

This game is the epitomy of mediocrity. It just doesn't have enough content or ideas to fill half a game.

The game is short, however I think this works in it's favour, if this game were 20 hours long it would become dreadfully stale but for a 6-7 hours rompfest it keeps you thoroughly entertained. I feel the reviews suffer from peoples expectations for ryse son of rome and I like many was expecting something with a bit more depth, however the graphics and obvious attention to detail in creating excellently modeled swordplay have left me with an experience to remember.

So, to start with the good points; Graphically appealing, which compliments well with the gory nature of the game from slitting throats to dismemberment.

QTE's are very well placed, however over-used is an understatement.

An okay time filler waiting for other game updates, or downloads if you own this as a digital copy like I do.

Now, I will probably use up the character count in listing the bad points, so will go for the most crucial.

Gameplay in a nutshell is; "Stab-Stab-Stab-Bash-Bash-Bash-Exectute-Counter" and repeat.

The combat while effective and smooth flowing, it gets stale after the first two missions.

The story, for whatever story there is, isn't at all gripping, quite frankly on Mission 3 of 8 I have no idea what is actually going on.

Over use of QTE's on EVERY enemy execution is overkill. However the variation of the QTE's is a good addition.

Now to me, a good game can stand on Singleplayer alone. Ryse cannot do that. So I hope that Multiplayer can redeem this however it seems unlikely.

To give it anything less than a 4 is absurd. But giving it more than 8 is because people don't want to admit they wasted their money.

Fairly say this game is a 6 or 7 out of 10. And I would not recommend purchasing it at full price, rather wait until it is at least half, yes half, of it's RRP. While the game has nothing to show for it's immense gameplay it does make up for with visual appeal. Showing just a small amount of Next-Gen capability. And hopefully leaving a good sign of things to come from future releases.

The historical inaccuracies are what did it in for me. I can understand taking creative liberties for a game like this, but as a big fan of ancient history, I found myself being more focused on the complete disregard for historical context than the actual gameplay. Damocles was a Greek character mentioned only in Roman history one time by Cicero. King Oswald wasn't even alive until around 600 AD, centuries after the Western Roman Empire fell. Boudica never invaded Rome, and never would have done so RIDING AN ELEPHANT, AN ANIMAL SHE NEVER WOULD HAVE EVEN SEEN BEFORE. They refer to the cities in Britannia as "York" and "Dover", which would have been called Eboracum and Dubris at this time in history. Nero had no sons, only a daughter that died in childhood. I could go on, but you get the point. If you want the most beautiful hack and slash game made to date, then this is your game. If you want a repetitive game with more or less total disregard for the timeframe in which it exists, then this is also your game.

So when playing through this i tried to put myself in the mind frame of somebody playing at launch and well in terms of looks, they'd probably have been amazed.

Graphically Ryse still looks pretty decent now 5 years after its release. The detail in character models (the main characters not the endless waves of identical barbarians you mow down) is still good looking with decent facial capture and motion capture. Everything moves fluidly, fast and is detailed. The voice acting is very solid and you can really tell they were going for the grand historical epic movie style of presentation.

The most common knock on Ryse is the gameplay and it is well founded. Ryse plays very similar to the Batman Arkham games in combat by which you are usually swarmed and fending off attacks from all sides but your character is fast enough to deflect a blow then immediately tend to an attack coming from behind him. As such Ryse is really all about timing and knowing what brand of enemy is attacking you. Whilst there are only perhaps 6 or 7 different kinds of enemy and each one requires a certain tactics. Shield enemies need their shield breaking with a push move before attacking for instance, dual wielding enemies will only have a window if you successfully parry their combo. It does get repetitive however it is visceral and bloody enough to keep you going until the end. The executions are a basic RTE of "the guy is flashing blue, hit X, he's flashing yellow hit Y. It's pretty fun for the first two hours but by the end is wearing thin.

Ryse then is quite superficial. It looks wonderful, sounds wonderful (especially the booming epic orchestral score) but it falls down when it comes to the gameplay.

However you only need put up with the gameplay for around the 8 hours it will take you to finish the the plot and the plot well...it's all over the place but cliche at the same time. Your family is slain by Barbarians under order of persons unknown and you are on a mission to find out who it was and avenge them. It basically like a bad version of Gladiator including the shamelessly shoehorned in Gladiator battles in the final act and the pompous wanna-be gladiator son of the emperor for a bad guy. They do tell the story in a kind of interesting way by telling it in reverse through the main character Marius telling a story but really the plot is far from solid. Even putting aside that it has very much been done before it is short and quite predictable from start to finish. A shame because the voice actors do well and the visuals are well directed. It certainly looks and sounds like an epic historical movie but the material they are working with is well below par.

It bears mention that this is a "historical" game in the loosest sense of the word. Anybody with the slightest sense of historical knowledge will find the whole thing sort of absurd. Whilst I understand the need to take artistic licence to make things more grand or exciting than they actually were they really go way off the deep end. For example there was indeed a historical figure called Boudica, however she didn't duel wield swords, fight like a ninja or ride into battle on...wait for it...war elephants. Where she got the elephants or how she got them to Rome for a battle (which is another glaring historical liberty taken but anyway) is never explained it is just simply "here is Boudica on an elephant, ain't that something?". More to the point there some moments of absurdly unlikely action. Marius' ability to throw a pilum (spear) at things is incredible. He fells an elephant with a shot to the eye from about 40 feet away, tears through a rope another time. It gets pretty laughable at points, it's like a Roman "B" movie. Also whilst I am not one to really complain about these things the way they portray women is hilarious. Every woman in this game is in some state of nudity. Atop the other ludicrous design choices for Boudica her armour leaves one boob bare except for a leather strap covering the nipple. A goddess later in the game has bouncing jiggling boobs that are basically out, an oracle is naked but for body paint. It's not needed for any reason other than them to go "hey look, next gen boobs!" It's cringeworthy.

But besides all that? I kind of enjoyed myself for 8 hours. I've played better games and I've played worse. This is pretty much your standard launch title as I said at the beginning. It looks pretty and it plays okay. Almost everything besides the looks and voice acting is average or worse but it's on game pass and if you never played it then it's worth picking up and trying. It's a throwaway game and the plot if nothing else will make you laugh, sadly though, I doubt that was their intention

Ryse: Son Of Rome has tuning graphics, a great combat system, and an immersive story. It also has a good Co-Op mode that will extend your experience. A must-have for any Xbox One owner.

The story follows Marius, a Roman soldier rising through the ranks over the course of the game and battling against the natives of Britain. It's set up pretty early on that he is also avenging the death of his family, kind of like the Punisher.

The story is excellent! It's not too long and you really root for the deaths of the antagonists by the end. There is kind of an odd spiritual element to it that was a little confusing, but I though that the story was very well done overall.
You wouldn't expect any less from Crytek, but the graphics are fantastic all throughout. There are many epic set piece battles that become pretty memorable, especially the excursion past Hadrian's Wall.

The combat did take a little getting used to at first. It's very similar to the Batman Arkham games with a lot of countering and attacking, but they do have a QT style finisher that is not only satisfying, but it will net you more experience and bonuses based on what mode you have selected (More health, more damage, etc.) There are a few irritating enemies that have to be handled a certain way, like shield breaking or countering at the right time, but I did feel pretty skilled with the system by the end of the first chapter.

If there is one major issue it would be the camera. It is usually right up the characters backside. I felt like a proctologist. Even in combat it was very tough to see all of the enemies that might be rushing at you. I suppose it might be for realism, but it didn't work very well.

Overall, this is a great game-especially for a Game Pass rental. It's quick and entertaining and definitely worth the six hours or so that it takes to beat the story.

Empire of boredome... Game is beautiful even in 2023. Camera is terrible and may make you sick, and I am not that type of person talking about camera angles in games. Gameplay is run forward and press hit to beat all enemies, which are only 3-4 types. You will not miss anything, if you skip this game.

Like the sorority girl you wish you hadn't started a conversation with at that party, Ryse: Son of Rome is both beautiful and utterly lacking depth or vision.

First, the positive: Ryse: Son of Rome is the most beautiful game I've yet played in the 'Next Gen'. The architecture of Rome is presented gloriously. I spent many a minute studying a statue or intricate pattern on the marble inlay of a grand hall. The textures are incredibly high fidelity, and do not lose any of their luster when examined closely. The lighting engine is glorious, with motes of dust suspended in shafts of sunlight and sparks whipping through the air above a fire. Truly a spectacle to behold, especially in the more chaotic battle scenes, where mighty catapults fling flaming boulders into the splintering decks of triremes charging towards a shore wreathed in battle and blood.

Unfortunately, graphical fidelity is where my praise for the title ends. There is little to be done in the game that hasn't been well trod by developers with a superior footing. The combat is a standard hack and slash/QTE execution affair, and you will have seen all of those within the first 30 minutes. The story is overly reliant on well worn tropes (be prepared to avenge the death of family members you won't remember the names of a full minute after they're butchered) and the whole affair is bogged down in the mire that is the repetitive nature of the tasks you are presented with.

Curiously, the game chooses to use ACTUAL historical figures in the presentation of the story. I say curiously, as anyone with a passing knowledge of Roman History will find the references to Oswald, Nero, Boudica et al at odds with the time periods in which they existed and the nature of their ACTUAL character/demeanor/motivations. Hard to feel like a hero (or even an antihero) in the narrative when you have a hand in Rome's interactions with Boudica (to cite but a single example of the required cognitive dissonance to get anything from the story).

On the whole, Ryse is a game that bears a rental, assuming you've an interested in sheer spectacle, but otherwise fails to maintain anything resembling engagement when taken as a whole. There is also a cooperative multiplayer arena mode, but I found myself so disinterested in the title 3/4's the way through, that I didn't even bother to give it a look.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ryse is a visually stunning game that really turns up the graphics benchmark with the use of CryEngine. The game play mechanics tend to be enjoyable for a short period of time and the story line takes on a twist that I wasn't fully expecting.

Games made with the CryEngine do not need a review explaining that the graphics are good, this is to be expected with CryEngine so we'll continue with the original advertisement of this game.

When I first heard about Ryse I watched a trailer that showed someone playing the game with the Kinect and they were fighting. Swinging their arms like they had a sword, raising their arm like they had a shield, kicking the enemy away from them and finally hurling their sword. This was an excellent promotion that caught my attention. I thought to myself "Finally, someone is going to use the Kinect the way it needs to be used!"
I was sadly disappointed to find the only Kinect features this game actually has in it are with voice commands which are rather useless.

With the Kinect features out of the question this game should be able to deliver spectacular fights and it almost seemed as if the developers had done so when you go through a kill animation and have to press certain buttons and see the spectacular method of killing your enemy.
Although, after a few times of doing so you quickly realize that it's the same thing over and over. Killing an enemy without one of these sequences feels meaningless and killing them with one of those sequences becomes too repetitive.

Then they add a feature where you can press a button and everything around you slows down and you can start owning everyone around you. This feature seems neat as well but after a few uses you once again discover it's rinse and repeat all over again.

The story line to the game is almost good. The best part of the story line is when you discover you're Damocles. The way the game builds up the story behind Damocles makes it feel as if this warrior is so awesome that his presence would be enough to kill your enemy. Then you discover that you are Damocles in the manner that you were brought back for vengeance and at first it feels as if your character will be transformed somehow, maybe faster, or stronger with new kill animations or anew weapon.
But this is not true. The only new thing that happens is your character places a mask over his face a few times.

After the campaign is over you're left with the arena which doesn't have very many options and isn't all that difficult to complete. Every game I've ever played that involved an arena or Colosseum have never gotten it wrong, until now. The developers did add several things to the arena that I haven't seen in previous games but these objects are generally not needed to win and therefore don't necessarily add to the game play.

Overall. Ryse is nothing close to what was shown in the early trailers. The graphics are very good which is expected from the CryEngine. Game play mechanics are too repetitive. The use of the Kinect is useless and should have been excluded entirely. The story line takes a very interesting twist and doesn't build on the character afterwards. The arena has things inside it that I haven't seen before giving the arena potential for unique combat, but ultimately isn't needed and isn't very challenging.

This game is highly and unfairly underrated. I don't know if it was the hate for the Xbox One that spread over and caused some people to be harsh on Ryse, but whatever it was all I know is that Ryse is a lot better than some of the reviews would lead you to believe.

I should say that I don't actually own an Xbox One, but I was able to play through the game on weekends at a friend's house. I don't think the game actually deserves a 10, but there are far too many fanboys giving it scores like '1', which is just absolutely ridiculous.

I'm not going to say the combat is amazing because it is not very deep and somewhat repetitive, but it does look very cool and can be pretty satisfying and fun. Gameplay in general is decently good, not amazing.

Story-wise I found this game to be great. The narrative kept me interested the whole way through. It feels like a high budget movie in many ways.

The sound is excellent and the graphics are jaw dropping. Pretty much unrivaled by any other console game.

All in all I would give this game an 8. All of its attributes combine into a pretty enjoyable whole.

Ryse: Son of Rome is a really good looking game, but at the same time incredible stupid. Thanks to the graphics and the amount of brutal combat the adventure managed to entertain, at least for a bit. If you find Ryse on sale it can be worth a closer look, but for a full price game it’s a disappointment.
