At the moment, Mario Golf on the 3DS is the better value for a golf game. The game play mechanics are pretty good, but it takes more than that for a modern sports sim. PGA tour 15 seems half-baked on release, and it's more than just a lack of courses (though that is a big factor). Nearly everything developed in the last-gen cycle has been stripped back for a less complete game. While theAt the moment, Mario Golf on the 3DS is the better value for a golf game. Nearly everything developed in the last-gen cycle has been stripped back for a less complete game. While the developer's have promised 'free' content in the future (nothing is free), the game is currently only worth $30 - hence the Mario Gold value.

I don't feel much better knowing about the 'free' content in the future, instead I feel deceived. This is clearly an incomplete game by design, not by time constraint. It's just like NHL 15, it's the same EA formula: when moving to next-gen, strip a game down from what is was, and then build it back up for marketing effect. I should have known better to pre-order.

Hopefully this review prevents someone from buying this game until and unless it approaches a $60 value.

The game is enjoyable, but has quite a few problems.

Graphics: I haven't played a PGA game in a while, so I was happy with how the game could look. Unfortunately the scenery glitches out somewhere at least once a hole which really brings you out of the moment, or rather never lets you actually enjoy it. Gameplay: I think this is where it shines, it's pretty easy to just pick it up

Gameplay: I think this is where it shines, it's pretty easy to just pick it up and play, plenty of options for play styles.

Other gripes: While I would never buy this game for online capability I played with a friend a few times. Online was super weird and glitchy. There was a neat "play at the same time as your opponent" feature, with what looked like some cool features like "see your opponent if he's not in your way" and "view the course if your opponent isn't done with the hold yet", however these features worked about 10% of the time, other times my opponent would be flickering in and out of existence, and the waiting camera angles are terrible, can't see anything. I would much rather have just watched my opponent's screen so I could tell what was happening at all, rather than watch some shrubbery also flicker in and out of existence from a mile away.

TLDR: I think the game had/has potential if you're just looking for some arcade golf fun, but the whole feel of the game is somewhere between rushed and beta. Good ideas poorly done.

I understand the frustration, that it is kind of bare bones for the price, but this is not nearly as bad as some of these reviews are saying. Sure, this isn't groundbreaking, they definitely should have done better have a 2 year break, but this is still very fun. The only real negative is the lack of courses. 8 real life courses, 9 with a pre-order, is just not enough. The lack of PGA players doesn't really bother me, since the majority of the game is spent in career mode. Expand

The game and graphics are really good. There is some reality to the golfer and reactions on how real golf is played in real life. The courses and commentary are good, not great but good. Some of the features are good. I have only played the career mode, and at first did not like "Quick Mode", only play 4,5, 6 holes at a time. Found out you can play full rounds in an option I did not see.The game and graphics are really good. There is some reality to the golfer and reactions on how real golf is played in real life. No Augusta, no Scottsdale until later date. If you like golf you will like the game, and can see "Finally" EA is going in the right direction and should get better from here going forward. See ya on the course. Expand

The tight mechanics and gameplay cannot be overlooked and EA certainly has made good on that ground. Is it as enjoyable as the previous titles? No. It lacks the depth which its predecessors possessed and as a result, you’re left with little will to return. Regardless, this is the first half-decent golfing game on the current gen consoles, and aside from the gimmicky Night Club Challenges and inclusion of Star Wars Battlefront-themed courses, Rory McIlroy PGA Tour offers a level of realism that you’re unlikely to find anywhere else right now.

This should have been a glorious comeback for EA's golf series, but it is a let-down. Especially because it takes everything away that made the last games with Tiger Woods so much fun.

    A half-finished game. [Issue#128, p.80]
