  • Summary: The Spiral Arm has been plunged into chaos, hordes of WarSwarm, a hive-mind of alien AI, have waged war on humanity, and it’s fallen to the poster boy for the Federation’s “Most Wanted” to save the galaxy… and turn a profit.

Riftstar Raiders is a fairly solid entry into a usually forgotten genre in our modern world of gaming. It offers up solid, if not a little loose feeling, gameplay with tons of replay value and an adjustable level of challenge for gamers of all types. Its greatest victory is in the gear crafting system. Never before has an arcade style starship shooter felt this involved and this personal. Each ship that you make is truly you own as if you were the one sitting in that cockpit making those decisions.

It lacks anything to make it stand out from the rest of the proposals, but it will not disappoint fans of the genre, thanks to its careful arcade gameplay.

There are definitely better co-op games out there, and there are better space shooters for sure, but RiftStar Raiders can still be a fun game.

When played in multiplayer, it just becomes too hard, too drawn out and too stressful. It's just not fun. But even then, unless you're prepared to to get to grips with RiftStar Raiders' unintuitive controls, you're probably best off steering clear.

RiftStar Raiders may not be the best game I’ve played in this specific genre and it may have problems, but without a doubt it provided me with quite a few enjoyable moments. This game boasts a single player offering and co-op offering and in my opinion the best way to enjoy this game is in co-op. I found playing it this way to be incredibly fun and they encourage teamwork throughout, which is great. There are some fun moments to be had when playing alone but I found playing this way to incredibly difficult, so expect some frustrating moments when played alone. Something that really impressed me about this game was the level design. Each level is huge and there is plenty of exploring to be done which ultimately keeps things fresh and interesting for quite a while. In terms of gameplay the game provides you with frantic and very exciting action throughout and it does carry with it an addictive side to it. I will say though that the controls can be an absolute nightmare at times however. I never felt that I got the hang of the controls fully throughout my time with the game and the awkwardness of them can be a problem at times, especially when in the middle of a big battle. In terms of customisation the game has a huge amount for you to sink your teeth into, but the only problem is that it requires a lot of grinding for you to get the best equipment and this can make things become pretty tedious. The presentation side of the game surprised me quite a bit because I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Visually the game has a great look to it and it captures the space theme really well. The same can also be said about the sound design which does a great job of making the gameplay very immersive at times. At the end of the day fans of space combat will find more than enough to satisfy them here and I must admit that when all the elements combine together it provides you with a very fun and exciting experience. I wish I could score RiftStar Raiders higher but unfortunately it suffers with a few problems and whilst they aren’t major problems they still take away from your overall experience from time to time. That being said it has more good things than bad and in the end it does enough to get a thumbs up from me. Expand
