    Atmosphere is everything.

Presentation: 9/10 How do you do to honor the game that defined a genre? Easy, remake it from the ground up to look, feel, and control like the original but with the polish and attention to detail of a current gen AAA title. Camera angles, environments, and creepy nuances in sound and music make this the most atmospheric and cinematic survival horror to date.

Gameplay: 9/10 The first thing you will notice is the lack of control over the camera, then the unique way the characters control. Neither one of these elements are by any means faulty but rather refined and unique to the early Resident Evil games as opposed to today's over the shoulder shooter style. This adds tension and a sense of fear as you never know what's around the next corner. The tank-like controls mean you you will have to master them if you're to be fast enough to defeat more agile bosses in the game. There is also a subtle lock on feature that helps you hit your target without the need for on-screen cross hairs which adds the the cinematic experience. The limited inventory system adds a sense of realism and an element of strategy that will have you backtracking but the environment throws new and unique obstacles at you to keep the old hallways from becoming tired and redundant.

Graphics: 10/10 I can't say enough about these graphics. The pre-rendered backgrounds make for some of the best graphics on the Gamecube and even the Wii, for that matter. The moody lighting and shadow effects add to the atmosphere which can only be described in one word "haunting". The mansion this game takes place in has been a set piece to nightmares for everyone who has ever got to experience modern horror. Everything feels lived in but not quite real, as if you are experiencing a low budget 80's horror film. Lightning flickers though the windows as if the dwelling is right out of reach of a thunder storm, and the open and shut windows are a constant reminder that a way out is a way in and nowhere is truly safe for long. Real survival horror at it's best.

Sound: 10/10 The sound has an unparalleled creepiness. When walking through a hallway on the 2nd floor if your lucky, all you hear are your own foot steps. If you aren't so lucky you will hear the cold groan of something nasty about, maybe a banging on the doors or windows. It could be the walking dead, or something worse. You don't quite recognize these sounds and that's the most chilling aspect. Some rooms have a creepy soundtrack that fades in when you enter, others have a dead silence to them and only your footsteps can be heard. The realism of the sound complementing the graphics is something I have yet to witness in any other game. If playing this without any other distractions, you really feel like there is a storm coming outside, the ground you walk on is real, and something terrifying has happened here. If the graphics are the heart than the sound is the soul to this feeling.

Value: 8/10 It's so hard, after all that praise to say that this game may not be quite worth the full $50, at least not for everyone. While the die hard Resident Evil fans as well as fans of all things spooky will want to pick this game up immediately at the the end of the day, for the casual gamer, it is just another game. It's over in around 6-10 hours depending on your level of experience. If you want the best unlockable weapons you can speed-run the game in under 3 hours. That proved very difficult for me but it can be done. There are two different characters to experience the story through and both of the have unique experiences and decisions to make so replaying it in different ways can be rewarding for the inclined, but after a couple of weeks, you may find yourself growing board of the experience. A word of wisdom: If you buy this game, keep it. It's an amazing experience and worth picking up ever now and again (around Halloween) and well worth your time.

Resident Evil is a remake of the title that gave the survival horror genre the popularity it deserves in the video game industry. Everything a person would want in a remake is present. Updated graphics that match the quality of the current generation of consoles, better sound effects that give the games environment the perfect atmosphere and more area to explore that helps pacing and story progression. Really, a masterpiece and a title any fan of the genre shouldn't go with out playing.

If you've never played RE before, then this remake is the definitive way to experience it. Dismissing the campy elements of the original, it increases the creep factor with new environments and intense standoffs. Unlike the recent games in the series, this is a slow-paced horror title. A quick death can occur in an instant due to booby trapped rooms. You may also unknowingly walk into a room featuring a boss that can quickly kill you. It is a game that encourages players to constantly save due to its trial-and-error nature.

Nevertheless, this is a classic that set the standard for the genre. It plays out differently depending on which character you choose (Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield), so it is worth playing through twice. And while the slow pace and constant loading may turn off some players, fans of old-school games should enjoy the experience. Overall, I'd rate this HD remaster with an 8.3 out of 10.

I remember when I was a kid and I gleefully got the "Resident Evil REmake" way back when on my Nintendo Gamecube. I was 13 at the time, new to the whole genre. That game introduced me to the series and instantly made me a fan.

This HD Remaster does that game justice. Rather than spend all day comparing it to the old GC game, I'll just say for any returning fans, if you enjoyed the GC

For RE Newbies out there, you picked a very different game to jump in compared to what you're used to. Fixed camera angles, limited save points, and a compressed inventory; these are some of the gameplay elements that may frustrate you or throw you off when you start playing, but please just stick to it. I promise you'll keep playing and you'll discover a gem of a game.

If the original tank controls are too much for you, you can select the new control scheme they included to help introduce people to it. New players are also going to have to understand that unlike in other games, they cannot kill every enemy.

The graphics are impressive for an over-10-year-old game, and the atmosphere is still just as chilling as it was 10 years ago. This game isn't for everyone, but for those that push through it, they'll find a gem of a survivor horror game, and taste how gaming was from 10 years ago.

Some of the cut-scenes are grainy, but are not detrimental to the game experience. They are minor like the water draining or the credits at the end. The graphics are polished and the 3-D model characters are nice. The music is there as much as it is not, by that i mean it still has the areas where there is none. Just the sound of you walking, the storm outside, and sounds within the mansion.

I would give the game an 8.5 if you have never experienced the control system and fixed cameras of RE 1 they present a learning curve, but the game offers a new control scheme that polishes the core controls. They have also added a difficulty level to the game which, depending on your selection, will generate more ammo and health while also making enemies weaker. They have also added stronger weapons in the game that were not in RE 1. I think I would have to be really picky about flaws considering the game is only 20 dollars. Overall the game is awesome to play and look at. Hopefully they will remaster the first 3 RE games, and release them for the same price. Great job Capcom this is one of the best decisions you have made in a while.

Not saying this game isn't amazing, because it is, but the addition of another alternate story mode, game mode or some other unlockable would had made this perfect. The only reason it isn't getting a perfect score if because it didn't bring many new features to the table, but that's to be expected with a HD remaster. Expand

For $19.99 this game offers a lot. First of all, it is an amazing game. If you have never played through the original game, this is a fantastic opportunity to do so. It also does not skimp on content just because it is an HD remake. There are control style selections available (which is great for gamers unfamiliar with the original controls) and you have two outfits to choose from when selecting your character play through. Not a huge deal but I nice touch.

Graphically it looks great and the environments are far creepier than before. Some of the rooms from the original game I remember not thinking much of them; but, now that some details have been added (bloody rug, flickering candlelight) it adds so much to the environment. The zombies are decent looking and fit the game well, I miss the days when zombies only moaned and walked slow with an exaggerated reach.

Overall, my only issue with the game (which is very minor) is the dialogue tracks are the same as the previous remaster of the game. I would almost prefer the original dialogue from the very first game if they had to use a previous cut (I hope this isn't Chris' blood) just for comedic value; but, I also know that rerecording a whole new audio track for this game would have not made it $19.99.

In conclusion, the game is a great price, eerie journey and if you are looking for an immersive single-player game this is an awesome choice.

Thank you for reading, never stop playing.

This game sets the bar for what Survival Horror is supposed to be, a bar so high incredibly few games have been able to reach it since 2002. I first played REmake on the Gamecube, and have done playthroughs of it rather recently, so the differences between both versions pop out at me more. Going forward in the review, I will write assuming that you have never played the original version, and that this is your first time experiencing the game.

The storyline of this game is the one that created and shaped an entire franchise and defined a genre, so it's safe to say it's rather well done. You play as either Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield, members of an elite division of the Raccoon City Police Department called S.T.A.R.S., who are on a search and rescue mission for the missing members of your unit. While the game plays mostly the same depending on which character you choose, there are some major differences that throw curveballs at you. For example, playing as Jill gives you access to the Lockpick, which makes entry for certain rooms much easier than Chris, who has to scour the mansion for keys to unlock these rooms. Jill has more inventory space, but can take less damage. Playing as Jill means you're assisted by Barry Burton, who can save your life and drop you ammo from time to time. Playing as Chris means you will cross paths with Rebecca Chambers, who can treat your wounds and restore your health when you visit her. There are also key differences between the characters in the sense that playing as Jill allows you to capitalize on her unique skills, such as chemistry, lockpicking, and piano playing. If you choose Chris, you have to do more brute force and exploration to progress, but his permanent access to the lighter makes it easier to torch zombies.

Ah, yes, zombies. The key staple of the Resident Evil franchise and this game in particular. They will be the main enemies you fight throughout the game, but the zombies in this game come with a twist. After killing a zombie using any means that didn't involve decapitation, the body remains where it fell. Unless you burn the bodies using kerosene and a lighter (both of which take up inventory space and time to find fuel) the fallen zombie will eventually mutate into a V-ACT and become much faster and stronger. This adds an interesting dynamic to the game. Do you go out of your way to burn the bodies, do you just avoid killing zombies entirely, or do you take on the V-ACTs as they reanimate? It all depends on your play style. There are also other enemies in the game, including mutated dogs, spiders, plants, and snakes, all of which require different methods to successfully take down. Later in the game, the Hunter is introduced, which accelerates the game by giving you a much faster and stronger enemy to fight as you backtrack through the mansion, ensuring things don't get stale. There are also a few boss battles throughout the game to keep things interesting.

The graphics in this version are enhanced, but still don't truly hold up to brand new modern releases. Despite this fact, the game still looks gorgeous. A few cutscenes were changed to add a bit of flair to them, but nothing overly dramatic. One of the biggest improvements is the lighting, the Gamecube version was too dark at quite a few parts, but this remaster seems to have corrected those issues. The cheesy dialog remains, and the rest of the game is just as fans should remember it. In true Resident Evil style, there is quite a large number of rewards for completing the game multiple times. Speedrunning the game unlocks unlimited ammo pistols and rocket launchers, and beating the game on increasingly difficult modes unlocks new modes to try. For example, completing the game unlocks Hard, completing Hard unlocks Real Survival (a mode automatically set to Hard that doesn't allow item boxes to be linked, meaning you have to be careful of where you place certain items) and beating Real Survival unlocks Invisible Enemy mode. This encourages players to continually test their skill levels and to come back to the game multiple times.

My only complaint about this edition of the game is the feeling of the controls. Everything felt amazing on a Gamecube controller, but they didn't translate over perfectly to the Xbox. Pushing up on the left stick causes your character to run automatically, which feels a bit sticky in multiple situations, especially when coaxing zombies into grabbing for you. The default controls are available, where you have to hold down a button to run, but even these feel a bit clunky on this controller. A small complaint only noticeable by those who have poured hours into the previous version of the game, and the only thing that sticks out as an issue.

Overall, this game is a masterpiece. An incredibly well done remaster of a remake that will make Survival Horror fans fall in love all over again.

the world by popularizing the survival horror genre and instantly making Resident Evil a household name with the first installment. The shoestring budget, laughable voice acting and jenky controls were all excused thanks to the revolutionary gameplay and genuine scares that were given to players for years to come. In 2002, Capcom were presented with another opportunity to bring players back to the Spencer mansion of the first Resident Evil in the form of a remake. With updated graphics, rearranged puzzles and new enemy types, even the most experienced alumni of the original were caught off guard by how unique the experience was, regardless of how faithful it was to the original. Resident Evil's remake is often regarded as the
best horror game ever made which is a big reason why I wanted to play through it.

I bought the HD re-release of this game for myself for Christmas in 2016 and barely played it for years. I knew it was a classic but honestly felt intimidated by the cryptic puzzles and non linear level design. This was enough to stop me from beating it for almost 3 years.

Upon playing through it, I generally had a lot of fun. Admittedly, I had to use a walkthrough for some this game (Pudge 007's Jill No Save Walkthrough) and I'm not totally sure if this style of gameplay is entirely my thing but I feel like this one might grow on me. I very much enjoyed the 2nd half of this game more than the first and I can't pin point exactly why. In conclusion, I can see why this is such a classic and I'm willing to acknowledge its greatness despite preferring other games in the series such as Resi 7 and Resi 2 Remake.
I beat this game in November of 2019.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This remake adds the story of the Trevor family, which was the family of George Trevor, the architect of Spencer Mansion. George had a wife and a daughter (Jessica and Lisa, respectively). Spencer was afraid of George telling the truth about the mansion, so he made a trap, he invited the family to a fake dinner, and when the family came, Spencer would use them as experiments. George was busy, so he sent Jessica and Lisa. Both were used as experiments, and exposed to a virus called “Progenitor Virus”, which on Jessica were injected the Type-A, and in Lisa the Type-B. After that, Jessica was killed by Umbrella (Spencer’s organization) due the bad results on the experiment, however, her’s daughter, Lisa, got a decent result with the virus so she was kept for experimenting.
Also, the voice acting is slightly better than the original.

This game is so **** confusing and frustrating there’s no way I’ll be able to set aside the time to finish it & live my normal life. It shouldn’t take me ****g hours of walking through one mansion to see 39 second cutscenes now and again. The rewards for trudging through so much boring searching and collecting are corny lifeless dialogue snippets & there’s rarely even any combat. As a remaster it's not as polished - graphically - as it should be, but it still proves that the core mechanics of Resident Evil as thrilling as they ever were. [Issue#121, p.81]

Still downright scarier than most of its successors and an unforgettable journey. [March 2015, p.74]

Newcomers should be aware that some of Resident Evil’s old-fashioned style can frustrate, but it is still a creepy, involving slice of bona fide video game history.
