RDR2 is a gem. Although there are so many things to do on the side and a fully-developed multiplayer to dive into, I keep falling back to the main storyline because it's just so good. It is without a doubt the most fun I've had in a video game in years.

I play games to get away from boring reality. This game has boring, time consuming chores, boring slow fishing, boring slow card games, real time theatre shows, slow laborious hunting, slow ass horse riding to get anywhere, slow animated cooking, slow animated cleaning, slow walking in camps. If I wanted to do any of that boring sh1t I would be actually doing it in real life, not playing video games.

I'm only half way through and I have gone from enjoyment at the beginning, to boredom, to actively being frustrated continually while playing the game.
Two guys picked a fight with me in a city, they opened fire with no provocation, I shot them, witnesses run screaming and 10 cops spawn in front of you down every street as you try and get away. finally escape with a $383 bounty now on your head, which takes approx 1000hrs to earn back looting people for .40cents at a time. finally pay off bounty, accidentally knock over random npc in the street and it all begins again.

Yeah the graphics are pretty, but the gameplay is the least fun and satisfaction i have had from a game in a long time.
I'm giving up on it for now. maybe they will patch it and make it a bit more enjoyable.
    Things it needs:
    Fast travel from anywhere.
No bounty, or way more loot so it is not so painful.
Better power curve- there is no progression after about 20%, you have everything decent.
Skippable cutscenes and animations. Faster animations.
More realistic police presence, the law is way too quick to the scene, coordinated, numerous and powerful.
No button press and hold delays, tap in rhythm to gallop everywhere etc, just more user friendly controls.
better inventory, everything is just so clunky and slow.
They seem to have made all the worst, most boring everyday stuff more realistic and slow, but made the law telepathic and able to appear in force anywhere on the map in moments. It takes you longer to wait for your horse to get to you and mount up, than a full posse of lawmen to track you down, even though you are ten a ten minute ride from any town, and start shooting, and when you shoot back, it costs you a fortune, and the cops are suddenly everywhere.
It's a frustrating game. You are apparently supposed to play like a good citizen, but the main story has you shooting up town after town, i just dont get the angle they are trying for. Confusing, aimless and frustrating.

Since TW3's release, I'd yearned for a game that would captivate me as that game did. After experiencing the entire game - and also upgrading from a first gen XBOX One to an XBOX One X, which was a substantial improvement - I awarded RDR2 with the coveted 10/10. The flaws detailed below are still valid, but they're insignificant compared to the game's strengths.

It's a very good game, but it's not perfect, and is therefore not worthy of the coveted 10/10. I'll mostly focus on the parts of the game that either need improvement, or should have been excised from the final product altogether. This is because everyone already knows about the game's high points.

THE HONOR SYSTEM: This is a total mess. It's the same thing as the karma system in the Fallout series. If you do something honorable, you get "good cowboy" points, and the opposite is true if you do somethign dishonorable. The game very much wants you to be a "good cowboy." There are a number of perks awarded to you if your "honor" is high, which mostly consist of discounts in stores, and additional clothing available for purchase at said stores. Given that money is not all that easy to come by in the game (at least for the first half), this is no small perk. The problem with the honor system, however, is that it's extremely finicky, and after not too long it conditions you to avoid confrontation with NPCs (both man and beat) altogether. For example, you see some men arguing at the side of the road, and it looks like it might erupt into gunfire. You intervene by shooting the primary aggresors just as they brandish their firearms. In so doing, you shoot one of their horses, which the game considers dishonorable. You have now lost an entire level of honor. Whereas you once received a 25% discount in stores, you now enjoy merely a 10% discount. What's more, to regain honor is no small feat - it's very, very easy to become dishonorable, but quite tedious and time consuming to attain a high honor level. So when the game forces you to do some mission that requires you to kill dozens of innocent NPCs during the course of an armed robbery, it's a bit of a punch to the gut when the inevitable honor fallout ensues.

AGGRESIVE NPCs: This is somewhat related to my gripe with the "honor system." You go into a bar and some guy picks a fight with you because he's drunk, etc. You'd think that this would be a fun diversion, or maybe even increase your "melee" skillset, or something similiar. Not at all. If he throws the first punch and you beat him to death (or unconscious - it's not clear to me if these guys die or not following a beating), then while you may not have the law on your back, you absolutely will lose honor points. Why? You acted in self-defense, so what's the issue? Who knows. And if you plunder the corpse of valuables afterwards, forget about it...not only will you lose even more honor, but you'll be wanted for "looting." Bonus points if you inadvertenly punch one of the men people in the bar during your justified assault - you'll now be wanted for "unarmed assault," notwithstanding you lack of criminal intent. So you see how this game really only wants you to commit sanctioned acts of violence, i.e., those that are bundled with a mission? Seriously, Arthur Morgan is considerably more placid and peaceful than I am even in my day-to-day life. It's outright bizarre.

LOOTING CORPSES: In addition to what I referenced in the "AGGRESIVE NPCs" paragraph, this also needs some work. Most of the missions involve shooting hoards of NPCs to death. We're talking at least three dozen. Every single one of these corpses can be looted, which yields not insignificant amounts of money, ammo, and other valuables that can be fenced. The problem is, however, your fellow gang members discourage you from looting - they constantly complain and tell you to hurry-up and move over to the next cut-scene trigger mark. You can ignore them, but man...they complain A LOT. It's just annoying, and it makes you feel like there will be some consequence if you don't heed their commands. I don't think there are any consequences - that's just how it makes you feel.

There are a few things that are more minor, such as the fact that animals usually have poor quality pelts, even if you kill them properly. You can eyeball the animal from afar to see if they have a three-star quality - or "perfect" - pelt, but why didn't they just give all animals perfect pelts and leave it up to the player to degrade their quality by utilizing the wrong weapon during the hunt? Who knows. Anyway, it's a great game, but it has some really wonky systems, and it's not clear to me why the developers included these systems in teh final product

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hope Rockstar really reads these users reviews and doesn't go by all of the biased early-review stories written by people who benefit from clicks. Possible spoilers here!!

I was the biggest fan of RDR, had no real knowledge of that game before it came out, and don't even like to watch westerns. But the graphics, gameplay, characters and story all blew me away. Became my favorite game of all time, and I was early waiting years for a possible sequel.

I pre-ordered the game like so many others, and like happens so often with other games, this was probably a mistake - not because the game is a total loss, but because it gives gaming publishers a pass for putting out a game that has serious gameplay issues.

Anyway, my feelings echo many of the exact things others have posted; the visuals of the environment, weather, etc. - the immersiveness in the world of RDR2 is incredible. And *some* of the missions and characters are very engaging. The Lenny mission is possibly one of the best missions in a game, ever. Unfortunately, most of the other missions are much worse. They are too close to typical 'fedex' missions, and are very annoying at times due to the wasted time riding out to the mission, or riding back, or the mission requiring loading your horse which already has a valuable skin, etc. Just not thought out well. I also agree that the missions are 100% strictly scripted and it gets annoying real fast. Mission starts; I can't save, I don't know how long it will take, often I waste my buffs and hard earned ammo to kill people and then can't even loot the bodies.

And possibly worst of all are the far-too-many Dutch "trust me I have a plan" (literally), doing stupid thing, "Arther you don't have faith", rinse and repeat.

I still haven't finished, and though I'd love to do all of the missions and experience everything that was put into the game, all of the wasted time has just made it seem drawn out and now I'm just trying to get to the damn ending.

Not a great effort overall in many ways and worse than it's predecessors.

Oh, how I wanted to love this game. I actually signed up to do reviews in Metacritic because of how blah I feel about the game. After 81 hours of playing, this is a game that feels like a chore more than anything else.

    - too much horse. I got the white Arabian and it is fast. The problem with the horse is that aside from walking it is the only way to get to around (sure there is a train and stagecoach for city to city travel) but come on, do I really need to ride a horse for 5 IRL minutes so that I can go the next objective? Sure I get to see the "beautiful game", sure I can always stop and hunt or forage, sure there is always a chance at an ambush, race, or animal attack, but even with all of that. the travel feels daunting. I bet 20% of my game time has been riding a horse and doing nothing else.

    - slow and repetitive animations (walking in camp, picking up stuff or when stuff happens during missions). The game has no option to turn these off, so every time I pick up a plant I have to wait 1-2 seconds while the animation plays, same with every other action I do - and it adds up. If I forrage 1000 plants that is 16 minutes of IRL time watching the same animation at 1 second per animation, skin 100 animals that is 5 IRL minutes of watching the same animation (sure the animal in the scen and how the skinning is done varies but after the 20th time it all blurs into - I don't give a damn. Aside from the animations, the slow pace, in general, doesn't really trigger anything outside of frustration and boredom.

    - I feel like the game forces you to play the good guy - it rewards you by doing so (discounts in shops, no bounty hunters to harass you - which is a good thing as most of them are magical bounty hunters with teleporting abilities) and punishes you if you don't. The cost of being a criminal far exceeds the rewards.

These are a few of the constant annoyances. However, the main problem is, that it's not a real open world game. If you focus on the main story you will experience a linear and scripted game with almost no freedom. Every time you try something different the missions will fail - and if you have to repeat the mission many are scripted and you can't skip the slow-ass ride from point a to point b because the NPC has some important story to tell you about how their balls hurt when they were riding wagons in the winter (I don't care). If you don't do the missions or follow the story, well then you get what I got - 80 hours of slowly realizing how laborious the game is and how unfulfilling it is to continue playing.

In summary, RDR2 is an average game in an open world sandbox if you ignore the story and do whatever you want. However, doing whatever you want too early in the game limits you because you can't get some gear or rewards until you follow the storyline so then you end up with getting forced to follow the story just to get improvements you want. If you love the main story, the game provides maybe 15-20 hours of a very scripted and cinematic game with high production value. Both parts have average gameplay and problematic controls. The only highlights and reasons to play the game are its great graphics, atmosphere and story. Which for me was not enough to want to finish the game or keep playing, TBH even with my goal of not buying new games until I complete the ones I have, I will likely call RDR2 completed and not go back.

I very often had the feeling that I am playing a re-skin of GTA V - this game is nearly 6 years old! There were games around 2000 that had better game play. The beautiful looking world does not respond or interact to players actions. Most of the time the player feels like the environment just there to look good. Weather does not have any effect on the players actions. Everyone who played games like Zelda BOTW knows what it means, if it is raining and you are trying to make fire. What about moving slower in snow? In RDR2 the weather does not have ANY effect on the environment.

Also the realism is a big problem in this game. Every review addresses the realism as the best part of this game and I think it is not. There are many situations were the realism is very close to reality, but the problem with too much realism is that you get very sensitive for things that do not act like in reality. There are several examples for this: riding on your horse for some time will make Arthur stow his guns in the saddle. Now if you jump of the horse you will instantly have your guns on the back again, but if you get into a gun fight while you are riding and you jump of the horse, you have to pick up all your weapons by your self!!! Another thing for example is that if you go to the receiver at emerald ranch to sell you plundered stuff in the night, he will stand in its shop but the interaction menu tells you you have to wait until tomorrow to be able to sell things... why is he even in his shop when he does not buy things from you????

I don't want to get too much into detail here since everything is already mentioned in the other reviews. In my opinion this game is no that innovative as it is presented by Rockstar and the bigger review websites. Most of the game is very retrogressive. For each mechanic in this game there are other games that do those mechanics way better! It is too slow, too time consuming and in no means rewarding for the spend time.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a prequel to 2010s red dead redemption where you play as Arthur Morgan, part of Dutches gang…
If you’ve played the first red dead you know things go sour, so Red Dead Redemption 2 sets out to tell that story…
Much like the first red dead, red dead redemption 2 sets out to immerse you with not only its environment and storytelling but its mechanincs as well.. much like a team ico game..
everything seems tedious, but its on purpose… the game wants you to feel completely in control at all times.. and its one of the things I love most about the red dead series,, you have to manually tap a button to gallop and go faster for example, you have to take care of your horse to increase its stats, it sets out to place you into another world, another time period.. youre essentially living another life away from your own… Red Dead Redemption feels that real…
This tedium is also this games downfall…
I loved both red dead redemption and red dead 2… however Red Dead Redemption 2 is nowhere near as enjoyable for me as the first… though they feel like vastly different games…
Red Dead 2 isnt about exciting events taking place, no cinnmeatic moments, you feel like a member of the gang, contributing, doing jobs and collecting cash to upgrade around camp…
and everything about this game is mythotical and slow, theres no fast travel in the way modern games have spoiled us with… you have to ride from place to place, take in this games world, run into its inhabitants and predators, thankfully this game is gorgeous at times, but I feel all the hype around how good this game looks is a little out of proportion…
infact I feel most of red dead redemption 2 is generally overrated…
but back to being slow… this is red dead 2s greatest asset and greatest flaw…
for the first 20 out of 60hrs of this games campaign, I loved the slow pace living life as a cowboy… but I felt the story and game just drug on forever.. exciting things rarely happening… never really having fun…
red dead redemption just isn’t a fun game…
and that’s okay.. it’s a different kind of experience… again.. back to the point of wanting you to feel like youre living another life, that’s what I felt.. I was immersed into this world…
but by the games final chapter I was just so bored, so uninterested on how anything turned out other than arthurs story…
I just wish the campaign was fast and fun like the first games campaign… while everything around it stayed a little slower..
just everything began to feel pretadictable, too samey… don’t get me wrong there are great moments throughout your 60 hour journey… but so much of it feels like needless padding, and things ive already done a thousand times… making me ultimately feel like the game over stays its welcome with the story…
everything this campaign set out to achieve couldve been done in under 20 hours easily…
there was no reason to drag it out other than a selling point of a long campaign that youll probably get too bored to even see through to the end…
if somehow youre still craving red dead redemption after that 60 hours there is an online mode currently in beta, but I just wasn’t interested in doing more of the same with a silent protagonist with my friends online…. Sure I don’t have friends, but that’s not the point…
the campaign itself had a hard enough time keeping my interest..
that said I actually Love Red Read Redemption 2…
I was just over it before it was over…
Youll get your moneys worth here… but youll probably end up searching for the ending on youtube.
I give Red Dead Redemption 2
    an 8.5/10

The storytelling in this game is some of Rockstar's best work. The "morality" meter at the bottom of the screen caries Arthur into what kind of person the player chooses, an evil one or a good one, and you will pay for it in the end. As of gameplay, Rockstar Games have successfully found the perfect balance of storytelling and action, as each mission is packed with an even amount of conversations, cutscenes and horse riding, gunfights. However, I rate this game a 9 instead of a 10 due to the over excessive amount of "realistic" aspects to this game, that generally just lower the quality of life aspects. For example, when picking up items/looting bodies, you must loot each individually, one by one. Another example is how if your horse is not in range, you cannot call it, and you are stuck having to walk or steal another horse. Nevertheless, this game is definitely in my top 5 games I've ever played, and for anyone who enjoys RPGs a must-play. Expand

    Red Dead Redemption 2

RDR2 is a all round good game but after playing through the first chapter and a bit of the second i found that all be it a beautiful game its very very slow and in my opinion is not a £60 game and it`s better if you wait until the price drops.

RDR2's gorgeous expanse is irredeemably cheapened by a mistaken belief that "more" equates to "depth." All of the detail is wonderful and beautiful to experience and look at, but once the novelty wears off, a creeping, empty joylessness settles in instead. Throwing in pointless **** is not what makes a virtual world feel like a lived-in experience. RDR2's selective realism shatters all illusion that its obsequious fetish for detail contributes to immersion in its story.

I'm a PC gamer but bought an XBox One X as a 4K bluray player, it came bundled with RDR2 so gave it a go after reading glowing reviews. But I cannot understand the praise, it's an OK game, nothing special.

    Pros:
Well told story, albeit consisting of rather cliched western fodder
    Well fleshed out characters
An incredibly well-detailed world, very strong in this area
The animals in the game are superbly realised and make the world feel truly alive
Pretty good graphics for a console, doesn't seem too sluggish on XB1X in 4K HDR mode, but it's not as amazing as people are saying

    Cons:
Game is not really open world, story is on rails as are the side-quests. If you go off piste you fail quests, you cannot apply any creative thinking to the problems. So rather a dull experience.
Appalling control system; unintuitive, unresponsive, inconsistent use of controls, makes the game not worth playing for me. It's like playing something from 20 years ago on a PS2
Silly and laborious systems for inventory, weapons selection and item use, you end up fiddling about so much with the menus that your objective has run off by the time you're ready to do what you need to.
Endless cut scenes that take you out of the game and ruin the flow of play, you just think you are watching a bad 1970's cowboy film in Sunday afternoon
Constant talking from all around you that prevents you just getting on with things. I really could not care less if some dumb broad thinks I ought to take a bath or not. It's just tedious small-talk that does not move the game on. Seriously, whoever wrote the script for this really needs to understand those two key story-telling maxims, 'less is more' and 'show not tell'
Weak combat system that makes you avoid combat rather than actively embrace it
The game is a horse-riding simulator. It's so dull; ride, ride, ride, then spend 2 minutes doing some boring activity, then ride, ride, ride back, as there's no decent fast travel system. So you just ride over the same boring dirt tracks over and over and over and over. Yeah we get it, you're a cowboy, you ride a horse. Wow. Big deal.
Overly anal attention to detail about the most petty activities; picking weapons from a saddle bag, watching you skin the same animals hundreds of times over and over and over. You even have to make coffee to drink, seriously, this is the type of tedious activity I do at home before leaving for work, I don't want to spend my gaming time reliving the less exciting moments of my normal life. Playing this game is often like having a second job, but one that's actually less fun than my actual career.

Main issue is the control system, it's so bad, I can't believe they released the game like this. I use an XB1 controller a lot on the PC as it's the best controller going IMO, so I am used to gamepads, but I have not seen a gamepad control system implemented this badly in decades.

So a bit of a mixed bag, but if I'd paid for the game, I'd not be pleased. Can't see me moving to consoles for my gaming if this is the best that's on offer.

It's realistic but to a fault. The game is just beyond boring. You're literally going to spend half your playtime riding around on a horse. The world looks nice, but when you're forced to admire it for 50 hours in order to get through the game, that's unacceptable. Combine that with the ridiculous online microtransactions, and this is one of the worst games I've ever played. Avoid!

the story is probably the best thing in this game, great narrative, great characters and it has quite a few memorable moments but the problem i have with it is that its way too linear. sometimes i almost forgot that i was playing an open world game. you have to do the missions in the exact way as the developers want you to do it and if you try to experiment you fail the mission. in one mission you have to sneak into a building but the only way to sneak in is to go the way that they want you to go. i tried going around the building to see if i could go inside through a window but of course i failed the mission as i didn't follow their rules.

the graphics in this game are amazing and they did a really good job adding small details like horse balls shrinking in the cold. At the start of the game i was riding my horse and i saw a branch that was coming towards my face, i thought that i was just gonna clip through it like i do in a majority of games but the branch moved and swung for a bit and i was quite impressed by it. while the graphics might look really good they arent really interesting to look at as there isn't really anything special with the environment or artstyle that makes you interested to look at it unlike botw which has very nice geography and artstyle so its quite pleasing to look at.

riding the horse is not fun at all. after a while it gets very repetitve and boring, all you do is smash A until you get to the location you need to go to but unlike botw the environment doesn't look interesting enough to make it enjoyable.

the missions are fun enough but also quite repetative. a large amount of them are just "go there, **** up, kill everything". the ones that are different however are very linear and slow.

while theres much more of the game and theres a few more issues i have with it i'll stop there as these are the biggest things with the game. its a good game i think but its way to repetitive, and it lacks freedom, even outside missions, overall i give it a 7/10

Red Dead Redemption 2 serves as just what you would expect a sequel of the first game to be, but slightly worse.
Some of the things that are fantastic about this game are the graphics, sound design, music and world detail.
the things i think the original Red Dead Redemption did better are the cover system and the story, these may seem like minor things but honestly it isn't acceptable

But then I played the game. It's good, for sure. I firmly believe the game is enjoyable and worth the price of admission, but it's a far cry from the perfect experience many reviewers have lauded it as. The plethora of systems is staggering and fun for the most part, but when the way you interact with those systems is so convoluted, it takes a lot of the enjoyment out of the game.

An example; the simple act of healing is so involved that you need an actual tutorial to teach you how to do it. You have to hold a button, press another button, move the control stick in a specific direction, push yet another button to select the item you want to use, then release the first button. Something that should be so simple and second nature has been funnelled through an overly complicated and esoteric control scheme. I wish I could say that's the only example of poor design, but it's one of many. The clunky movement system, the AI unreliability, animation issues, bugs aplenty, the list goes on.

I sound like I hate the game, but I promise I don't. It's a good time and enjoyable. It's worth paying the $60 just for the expansive environment and enjoyable activities. It's just that I couldn't in good conscience give it a perfect score like many of the reviewers that drink the Rockstar Kool-aid.

Rockstar certainly captured the feel of the original Red Dead, while still being innovative and new. The pacing is slow, but the game is intended to be that way. This isn't GTA, you're expected not to treat it that way. If you do, expect a large number of bounty hunters after you at all times. I always enjoyed the music, but by far the most during gunfights. The tension is kept high, and combat exciting. As far as the story goes, I've been kept engaged and interested throughout. Even random unimportant side activities like playing poker with your gang feels real and interactive, with the other players commenting on the game as it goes on, or referring to previous ones. If I had to nitpick something, I would say that the health/stamina/deadeye system can be a bit overwhelmingly confusing at first, but it quickly begins to make sense.

While I gave it a rating of 10 it is not perfect but compared to other games Red Dead Redemption 2 stands head and shoulders above all else. I say this not only as a gamer but also as a game developer. There are some things that may seem rough around the edges but everything in this game is deliberate and indeed sets itself apart from all other games ever released. Period. Does it cater to the lowest common denominator? Hardly. There are and will be detractors but those will be from those who are used to everything being laid out for them mindlessly in a wash of a saturated game market where fast and loose is rote. Red Dead 2 is a game to be savored with a map to be explored and missions to seek out without relying on map blips or text overlay directing which way to go. The story is immersive and easily the most cinematic of all games Rockstar has produced. All characters are deep and unique. The environments are lush and vistas unmatched by any other developer of open world games. While the main story takes anywhere from 50-60 to complete I easily surpassed those numbers to soak up every possible side mission and quest that I would stumble upon as well as using the companion app and strategy guide to seek out. The companion app itself is a great way to view the world map, shop for in-game items read the strategy guide or manual and/or track play progress while comparing with friend's progress as well. The online portion is still in Beta development but once ironed out will make Red Dead Online the future of online gaming as successor to GTA Online. There is so much to do, over 500 different animals to seek out and hunt and fish. Even portions of the map from Red Dead Redemption 1 are included as part of gameplay in both single and online play. This is a stunning achievement on many levels. The number and quality of systems designed for this game are well beyond and much more enjoyable than say things going on in the most recent Assassin's Creed games. The limitations on certain aspects make complete sense. However with such detailed systems in a console title there are controller input limitations causing some controller input schemes to be layered but once understood players can select items fairly quickly and get easier to use as one goes along. I am having such a great time playing both single and online in RDR2 that I will be playing this game for longer that I ever did GTA V/Online (played through single player at least 3 times on that one and was regularly playing Online until this was released). Once online is filled out with the types of content we expect I can only imagine playing this game for the foreseeable future indefinitely only to be interrupted by other releases along the way, only to return here. This is the only game that caused my to purchase a new 4K TV and Home Theater system to get the most out of this game. A decision I do not regret. All benchmarks for performance agree that the XBox One X is the system to play Red Dead 2 on and I cannot agree more. Get this game. It is a muts have for current generation consoles. Expand

The visuals in the game are outstanding but that´s about the only thing that stands out in this game. It´s basically a horse riding simulator. There is nothing for me to hate about this game, it is dangerously immersive. The graphics are the best I have ever seen on the Xbox One X and they hold up to be way above average on the standard Xbox One. This game is like playing something from the future. It is based on hyper-realism, meaning that it will take you a while to ride to your destination if it is miles away, that's the point. The tiny details in the game all mount up to making the world around you feel alive. I'll list a few: Horses and NPCs don't respawn, there are no repeated character models. If one dies, it never comes back into the game. NPCs all have separate daily lives and friendship groups. (Youtube: Following NPCs around RDR2). Your horses balls shrink when its cold (yes there is a weather system with temperature that is location and time dependant). Bodies of animals and humans decompose over days. You need to eat, drink and wash. Your facial and head hair actually grows over time and you can keep it trimmed if you want to. If your hat gets shot off, there will be a bullet hole where it hit it for the rest of the game unless you buy a new one. You need to clean and maintain your guns to keep them shooting accurately. You have to feed and bond with your horse for it to fully trust and listen to you like in real life. New horses have to be broken in to be ridable like in real life. You carry guns realistically, not hiding them up inside your ass like in GTA. There is so much in this, it would be difficult to list them all. What i love even more, I have completed the game after about 120 hours and there is STILL loads of content that I didn't know about.

Conversations feel real, the story and voice acting is fantastic, the characters leave you feeling like they are actually in your life. There are moments where you forget you are playing a game. Honestly, If this was based around first-person then this would be dangerously immersive and I love that.

If you take gaming a bit too seriously like I do and want to get immersed inside a new world, then this is the best money you will ever spend.

It was the perfect mix between fun and reality. This game, however, is all reality and no fun. You spend most of your time doing chores. Everything is overly complicated, which would be fine if you weren’t limited by the controls, so you end up shooting someone instead of saying hello. Just bringing up your weapon requires planning, and the characters movement are very difficult to control. The story is insanely boring, missions are planned out from start to finish so you feel like you might as well watch a movie. I think the main problem is that Rockstar have stopped making fun games, they’ve substituted fun for realism. The games are now trying to be smart, but end up being just boring. This applies to the GTA series as well, which hasn’t been fun to play since GTA:SA. And let’s face it, RDR was always just GTA in the wild west. In GTA III, the main character couldn’t even speak! Compare that with this game, which is all a bunch of useless dialogue. You feel like you’re watching a crappy movie, with plain characters. Expand

I'm an hour in and playing on rails is not fun. Shoot that small blurry person over there, not that one. Getting hit, who knows where that came from? (slow look left , then boat turn right) who is that? Is that grizzly rifle toting person my guy or their guy? Who knows? Ooops guess it was mine, start again with the walking simulator. .

Wow time to make a decision here is 2 AND ONLY 2. slow walk to guy a or b no hint as to what either will do so really it's flip a coin. An open world game with linear paths and binary choices. wow, just wow.

I have loved every single rockstar game since GTA 3, and this game is no exception to the rule. You can tell that there was a whole lot of effort put into this title and it is understandable as to why it took so long to release. The vistas are gorgeous, the story and acting is excellent, and the amount of things you are able to do in the game are literally endless.

Unfortunately, there are some glaringly obvious flaws with the game, the two major flaws for me are: the incredibly awful pacing for the storyline, there were some really fun missions alongside some really boring tedious missions, and it was hard for me to keep my attention on it and keep playing it sometimes, the other major flaw is the absolutely abysmal character movement and cover system that leave a lot to be desired.

    + Excellent story
    + Great voice acting
    + Great soundtrack
    + Lots of side activities
    + Gorgeous world
    + Some really fun missions
+ Extensive list of animals, customization options, clothing, etc.

    - Awful pacing in story
    - Incredibly boring missions and side quests here and there
    - Abysmal and clunky character movement and cover systems
    - Post game epilogue and explorable areas are less than interesting
    - Controller mapping functions are in desperate need of a keyboard
    - Online is heavily geared towards microtransactions and has a ruined economy

Overall, it is a great game, and a good effort put forward by Rockstar, but it is not their best effort. Felt more like a really long movie and less like a fun video game at some points. Looking forward to GTA 6.

    EDIT as of 12/03/18:

Red Dead 2's multiplayer is schemed towards micro-transactions and gold bars, which act as the premium currency in the game. The economy is totally screwed, everything in the multiplayer has outrageous pricing scales, or is geared toward encouraging the player to relieve themselves of grinding duties and purchasing gold bars due to paywalls on certain items. Literally everything in the world is monetized and I cannot help but feel like this is incredibly greedy and a very scummy move by Rockstar or Take Two.

Due to this greed present in Red Dead 2 online, my score has dropped to a 7. The consumers do not deserve this, and I believe Rockstar should be better than this, but what do my words mean compared to the illustrious amounts of revenue rolling in from online MTX. I am severely disappointed in Rockstar, and I want to believe this is just Take Two pushing this, but as of right now, I have minimal desire to return to this game now.

This game made me feel like the main character would in those regards. Care for the other members of the gang, increasing frustration with Dutch, sense of futility that the next big score would have us mango farming in Tahiti. Just excellent tone and pacing.

What it lacks in character progression (it is not a skill building or leveling power fantasy) it makes up for in character development. I believe some of the negative thoughts about this game miss the point that this is not a crescendo toward the climax but a story that kind of swirls around the central themes and the gang gets increasingly desperate and more fractured.

The way the game resolves and moves into the Epilogue is extremely well done.

I've had most of the rest of their games, and now fatefully RDR v1.2. The pent-up demand is what sold this game, NOT THE CONTROLS. The controls are horrendous. Simply horrendous. It's as if they did zero tuning/updating to the main core mechanics of movement/item pickup/weapon aiming or prior R* games and simply bolted on additional convoluted controls. Want to pick something up? Look around in a circle and walk back and forth and then maybe. Not always, for sure, but sometimes it is simply maddening. Even the controller scheme reference in the settings menu is irritating as it flashes between schemes/scenarios way too fast to make a mental snapshot.

Want to play poker, dominoes, or any other mini game? Be prepared to sit through repetitive time-consuming animations that suck the joy out of the process. I question if I expect too much detail in the scripted actions shown, and the answer is decidedly mixed. Some actions are highly detailed, others not so much - when it seems they could have been easily. The graphics of the physical world are great and plentiful, and with a variety unmatched by other open worlds. But - we play games for the fun and interaction. The controls spoil everything.

Want to start the next mission? Of course is in two towns over and requires riding there. Realism? Definitely. Belong in a game? No - it's just sooo boring and repetitive. Of course you can use Cinematic Mode, but you WILL be attacked along the way, and if your destination is a town, you can bet your horse will run into someone and get you a bounty needlessly, which in turn will lock down anything you wanted to do in that town until you pay off said bounty. That is if Cinematic Mode actually takes you to where you set your waypoint and not somewhere entirely different...

When following a NPC and avoiding detection/danger (which you will do A LOT), it is not always clear what the next action or location is to be as everything is scripted up to exactly where you have to walk to trigger the next process, which leads to replaying (at least there is finally a way to replay shorter sections/checkpoints of a mission or the ability to skip completely after three failures - a nice touch!). However, the score criteria on missions is unknown until you have completed the mission, giving you little chance to get a gold rating without playing through in its entirety at least twice.

And then there is saving your progress. Why is it saving is not allowed most of the time in this game? Some of these missions are so scripted (and boring!) that the inability to save is almost criminal. The Epilogue starts off being comprised of doing the most mundane and boring tasks that take forever and ever - and you can't quit because you can't save! It will finally autos save, but there is a caveat with that if you choose to load a prior point in the game and it prompts you to Autosave: if you allow the save it overwrites what you want to keep, and if you turn off the Autosave feature it will delete your last autosave anyway! Maddening!

Camera auto-leveling: Why, oh why, can't I dictate where my camera is pointing and when? Automatically resetting my view is a constant battle, and most FPS games moved past several years ago!

I realize this is a rambling review... There is just so many things wrong with this game that ruins what could have been a masterpiece - that I keep going back and adding sections to this diatribe. RDR2 Online is available to play (in beta) starting today. Don't care. There are other games to play that are actually fun.

One last parting thought: Ever wonder why some games are rated as excellent by the critics, but the user reviews are much more lackluster? Reeks of fanboy/financial incentives...?

Rockstar Games has created something special that must be experienced by anyone who wants an actual quality game in a sea of half baked, overpriced, micro-transaction filled yearly releases. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a nearly perfect game that earns a 9/10. Expand

The game is so good it made me write a review about it.
I've never bothered writing a single review before.
The visuals are incredible, diverse and immersive. Gunfights are exhilarating and satisfying as expected. You can even drive trains if that's your thing. The sandbox elements and the customization are out of this world. The story starts off slow but it rapidly builds momentum and

It certainly lived up to the hype, and is a true masterpiece like its predecessor.

This game is just incredible, it's a huge game with awesome graphics. After almost 30hrs of playing I still see things I've never seen before..The gameplay is very story-driven but it's still really fun and pleasant to play. The overall impression is just amazing, a game that will be remembered. A must-have for all console gamers.

I like how the game completes the puzzle in the first game, by that, i mean how everything all connects, why everything went from point A, to point B(ya feel me). The game is very interactive in more ways then one, even if your riding on a horse all day, there is something that could happen, like getting robbed, giving money to blind men, or saving someone from a life threatening occurrence , and repaying later on, its good and very interactive( if you know what i mean)

    Red Dead Redemption 2 -- REVIEW !!

This has been undoubtedly the best gaming experience I have had in years, the best after the Witcher 3 Wild Hunt , in terms of Open World games.

The amount of details, the realism and sheer amount of authenticity is mind boggling and makes you hard to differentiate between a video game and real life. This is the most realistic , "non-gamey" video game I have ever played.

Everything from the hunting , to the walking , to the horse riding , to character interactions feels so damn realistic.

Coming to the story, I just loved the story. Arthur Morgan is now one of my favorite video game character of all time now. And the game does a great job of creating a very well rounded story for him. Best protagonist of any Rockstar Game according to me.

The side missions and stranger quests are on par of Witcher 3 levels and extremely well done.

The only negatives of this game are that the game is too easy and does not have any difficulty slider, and the economy is kind of broken, and not so memorable ambient music. But some places the songs and background scores are epic !

When a game is still able to pull me back into it's world even after spending close to 80-100 hours in it, that is the best kind of game !

The best game of the generation, beside The Witcher 3 and God of War !

    PROS :

    Open World
    Characters
    Animations
    Realism
    Mission variety
    Story
    Protagonist
    Side Missions
    AI
    Organic NPC Activities and interactions

    CONS :

    Too Easy
Economy is kind of broken, nothing to buy even if you have the money !
Music is not so memorable at times

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the game of the year, no doubt.
The graphics in the game are out of this world. Once you've played Red Dead Redemption 2, every other game will look like GTA III. The amount of detail put into everything (yes, literally everything) is superb.

I wouldn't be surprised if this game was written by Shakespeare himself. The writing is truly astonishing. I never thought i would be this emotionally attached to a fictional character.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is not for everyone though. It requires patience. Lots of patience. For those who don't have that, well it will probably seem a bit tedious with all the horse riding. Red Dead Redemption 2 should only be played by those who can appreciate a realistic game. It is for those that aren't small minded. Most would find it boring and despise the realistic attributes of the game but the truth is the game is not made for them. It is made for those who can appreciate a great game.
The music in this game is also superb. D'Angelo really mastered Arthurs theme.
In conclusion, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the best game I have ever played in my entire life.
    Thank you Rockstar.

This game is probably the most disappointing since Mass Effect Andromeda. It's astonishing how this game is rated as a 97. I mean, not ALL the critics could have been bought off by Rockstar. I think it's because of the overall quality of games in 2018. Go ahead and look up the top five rated games of 2018, and then contemplate the future death of console gaming. I mean, not ALL the critics could have been bought off by Rockstar. I think it's because of the overall quality of games in 2018. Go ahead and look up the top five rated games of 2018, and then contemplate the future death of console gaming. So if you're a critic, I mean you have to give at least one game each year a 9 or 10, right? I guess? After all, the game does LOOK great, doesn't it?

Rockstar seems to have banked on two themes to make this game a success. 1) Make the game look exceptional (and after all, the game does LOOK great). 2) Up the violence and mayhem to the point where you the player murder/rob/beat/terrorize so many innocent people it makes you feel like a card carrying member of the Waffen SS (for Rockstar, FYI, that's not a good thing).

That's about it. They ignored everything else and it shows.

I knew something was deeply wrong with this game after I got done with the five hour intro/tutorial and I realized I didn't care about anything. The game does LOOK great after all. The combat is a lot of fun and at times even electric. But in general, I don't, like, FEEL anything while playing this game. The characters all are bland, cookie cutter, uninteresting blobs. The story reads like a five year old's choose your own adventure drawing of the Old West.

You don't get to make actual decisions that impact the plot / scope of the game. You're a complete spectator in somebody else's game script. The bounty system is asinine. You can kill 20 lawmen, go pay your own bounty that same day in the same city, and then walk around and converse with cops that same day and even though they acknowledge they hate you, nothing happens. Okay, it's a video game, but is this the level of acceptable reality Rockstar was aiming for in an open world game that's supposed to be so realistic you have to remember to brush your horse?

Between the lack of player agency, the bounty system, and the constant button mashing, it's like Rockstar made a game that looks like it's 2018, but with all the game mechanics and weak story for something made in 2004. It's baffling that they still think this level of overall quality is acceptable for a AAA game. And they'll still probably made a criminal amount of money anyways. So what do I know.

After a while I only kept playing this game because I paid full price and wanted to feel like I'd gotten my money's worth. If I'd paid like $20 for this game I'd likely have put it down after about 15 hours and never played it again. At times the game is barely playable. Definitely would not recommend it to anybody.

Rockstar have only shipped 1/2 the game so I can only give a max of 5/10.

Losses 1/2 a point for the grind that gets in the way of playing the game - brush you horse, shave your face, remember to sleep and eat. Losses another 1/2 for the significant AI bugs that prevent progress on some missions, and in some cases result in in forced fail. (Also very poor service from Rockstar not to

Good solid game but there are some stuff that needs to be answered. For example: The evil man.
The controls needs some cranking but it is a nearly perfect wild west era game. IMO this game needs MORE GUNS and even MORE GUNS some answers to the questions and BAM. Rockstar created the perfect game.

One of the best games ever made. Its 10 times better than GTA V(i liked that game too) and 20 times better than Skyrim( I played the living **** out of it).
But there are some small flaws like the games gets kinda boring in the middle but it has a great comeback.
Good game cant wait for online.

Это того стоило ведь в целом игра сделана отлично, мне совершенно наплевать то что у игры нет русской озвучки, субтитров мне достаточно, сюжет на высоте, русичи в очередной раз показали то что они неадекватные.

A stunning game. An amazing experience, so much so that for the first time I've felt the need to do a review. The story is involving and you'll find yourself loving and hating with a passion the characters in it. The amount of details and true research put by R* is just overwhelming. This is the way games should be made. A true work of Art.

Only graphical issue I noticed was shadow detail distance as ur moving about the world but its not obvious to the point of annoyance.

The audio is beautiful and very immersive. Music choice is good, gun sounds are nice and meaty, movement, etc, etc sounds are really good.

Story is pretty good, it reminds me of old 70s and older Western films where it concentrated on slow build up of characters, setting and scenes. Now honestly I find tht quite boring if it were a film, mostly bc of me being born in this modern time of speed, in entertainment.

Gameplay is pretty slow, methodical and gunplay feels about almost the same as the 1st Redemption. Most of the ppl tht dont like the gameplay are just too used to fast-paced arcadey gameplay nowadays and consider this more slowpaced gameplay to "intentionally avoid the QoL of todays gaming", when tht is simply not the case. (albeit a few weird command placements on the controller) Now im not saying tht invalidates ppls criticism but it does show tht its just not the game for them. (or shuld I say dont hav the patience of learning something this complex for controller input, which is understandable) The gameplay u can get used to and it can feel a bit stiff but its still nonetheless enjoyable if ppl dont mind or enjoy the more slow, detailed gameplay.

Edit: Forgot to mention tht it certainly isnt the best game of the year or generation. (it was overhyped) But its still definitely a solid game, from my exp and only had a few small frustrations with it.
Not much in terms of replay value also. (grant it I dont replay many Open World games anyways, no matter how good they are)

This is one of the greatest games I have ever played. It is so fun and the fact that it's extremely open world is also amazing. The graphics are spectacular. Sometimes it can get annoying because you can't save in missions and some of those missions take so long. Sometimes the game is too 'hardcore' for me so I need a break but I truly believe its the best game ever created.

Like everyone says, graphics and environment are stellar, very good but again like everyone else says, this game is boring; there is no getting around this fact. Eye rolling cut scenes you HAVE to endure because there is no skip, controls have not improved at all (like I'm playing Red Dead Redemption and if you're a fan like I am you'll notice this right away), constant losing items, forget trying to aim with 100 rabbits running around you taking your aim off your intended target, horse jumping for no reason or you just falling down and grunting because hey, why not huh?
In short, price might be a few dollars more than the game is worth but the bottom end buy is kinda worth it. Now, a score of 3 reflects the fact this game is not complete. We've now entered the time big game studios will sell you a finished game (BF5, RDR2, etc) but it is not, where you buy on a promise of future release of portions of the game which translates, the consumer will be screwed more and more as time goes on.
Save your money, wait for it to go bargain basement because it will. Maybe $35.99 is a fair price. In fact, join the growing voices that are not purchasing AAA titles anymore until the game makers (like EA Chief Creative Officer Patrick Söderlund called customers ignorant...and yet you still buy their game. How beta are you people?) stop screwing over their customers.
Up to you. Look at the score...almost HALF of the reviews are RED.

It doesn’t matter if you are gamer, a human being, or an alien from another planet; Red Dead Redemption 2 is a title that you just can’t miss. The bar set by RDR2 is so high that even Rockstar itself will probably have a hard time raising it. One of the best releases in the history of digital entertainment.

While it has some notable but minor flaws, it's hard to argue that Red Dead Redemption 2 is not a masterpiece. The end result of the meticulous detail, wonderful writing and stunning looks is an open world that sets a new bar for believability, and a time and place I can't stop thinking about or wanting to be a part of.
