    A real love it or hate it type title, Project Warlock will only appeal to a certain subsect of shooter fans. Those that like their action straightforward with no frills. Those that prefer the days where plot and visuals took a backseat to gameplay. The poor performance and lack of interesting narrative remain hard to overlook, though.

    Project Warlock is a respectable and enjoyable Doom clone. While it has some balancing issues to work out, it's still a must-have for fans of the retro FPS genre.

    Project Warlock isn’t going to set the world on fire, but what it sets out to do it does well. I found myself loving certain sections while struggling with others. With a few tweaks it could easily become a fan-favorite title that scratches that itch so many other games attempt and fail at.

Hailing back to the style of the Godfathers of the genre, Project Warlock is displayed in gloriously produced sprite based pixel art. Featuring around 60 levels (I lost count) each with their own musical track, this game takes you on an action packed romp to stop the invading forces of hell. It all plays out like Doom and Heretic had a baby. With both Spells you can utilize and a wildly upgradable arsenal of weapons at your disposal. There are also a good variety in environment and enemies, you never feel like your blasting away at the same nasty critters the whole time. Each enemy brings its own tactics, and the larger enemies even lose parts to damage. The game is well mapped even though you're always on a flat level plane it never detracts from the exploration. This game is a near perfect storm, giving a subtle nod to all the greats before it, and leaving its own footprints in the path. One of the most impressive aspects Is the game was entirely programed by Jakub Cislo who was 18 and in High-School at the time, as it was originally on PC in 2018. This is not a game to pass up if you enjoyed any of the games that inspired this game. Project Warlock is a must have homage to some of the greatest aspects of the genre.… Full Review »

    The game starts off a tad challenging as you are equipped with a wand I guess you'd call it. Also a knife and a Axe. Each weapon slot holds two weapons you have to hit a button to swap between them. I'll get it out of the way the weapon wheel is my only gripe with this entire game. At times especially in action it can be a hassle to work your way around. There is 38 weapons in all so you can only imagine how hard this wheel can be to use at times. I love all the different types of weapons though. Selecting them though is just a bit clunky. Good thing I love the Axe so much and Shotgun. I mostly just cycle between those two. I love how the weapons sound. It really sounds nice blasting your way through levels. All of the weapons can also be upgraded with stars you find along the way. Like my favorite is the "BloodThirsty" the Axe absorbs enemy energy and puts it into you. This can be real handy in certain situations. I really feel i used this most of the game. Each weapon has it's own bullet type you must find along the way. You can also find magic and energy vials to fill your health and Magic bars. The magics are found a long the way as well. All of these are upgraded at the Workshop you go to between missions. You can also upgrade your characters health, spirit, capacity, and more there as well. You gain this XP by picking up gold and jewels along the way. Some even hidden in secret rooms. Each Level has some of these loaded with stuff to aid in your journey.
    There are 5 different stages, but each stage has a certain amount of levels. There are 60 different levels in total. Each stage is so different than the others. You go from Castles, to Sewers, the Arctics, Deserts, and so much more. The thing about each of these they also have unique enemies as well. It never feels repetitive, and you just can't wait to see what surprises await you. each stage has a unique and super challenging boss fight. I highly recommend starting this on easy , because you have unlimited continues to learn the game with. I think the harder levels you only get like three men, and have to start all over. These bosses will kick your ass on easy, so I can't imagine starting them difficult and playing it over and over again from scratch. Each level has colored keys that open certain doors. Red, Blue, and Gold to be exact. You know you have found the end of a level when you come to a monster door that shoots fire at you. So even if you clear a level, and make it to the end you have to be cautious exiting the level as well.
    I said earlier it sounds nice blasting your way through the levels. that isn't the only nice sound along the way though. Project Warlock has 62 unique musical tracks that will blow your mind. They will hype you up so much, and really give it that 90's FPS feel. These songs are excellent, and really took me back to Quake, and Trent Reznor's music just rocking you all the way through. The music for "Project Warlock" does the same. It is such an epic soundtrack that really just adds to this nearly perfect experience. This game really was going to get a 10 from me. It blew my mind and surprised me so much. I never expected this type quality, with such an affordable price tag. Hopefully they can smooth out that weapons wheel. It's really the only thing holding this back from being the perfect modern retro FPS. I think it is without question the best this Gen. It does and has everything you loved about those classics. I can't wait to see more from this kid, he is a true future face in game development. i see a lot great things from him in the future.    … Full Review »
