Travel from the safe refuge of your farm through a series of regions progressively more affected by the infernal plague.

On the road, rescue survivors and choose whether to use them as traveling companions or to improve the Doctor's farm and gain access to new abilities. How your farm progresses depends upon where you assign survivors to work.

Some survivor types are more valuable in certain jobs, but may be more useful still if kept available for expeditions. Surviving the road will rely on your ability to fight horrors created by the plague, in combat encounters featuring grid-based positioning and turn-based strategy mechanics.

Traverse four regions with procedurally generated stages, featuring richly illustrated 2D art, music from award-winning composer Sean Beeson and narration performed by Jim Sterling.

The story is pretty interesting and it did keep me invested throughout my time with the game giving me something to work towards. There’s a decent variety of enemies you have to face in the game and the combat elements are actually pretty fun and have been done well. This game features a few different mechanics and this gives the gameplay more depth which in turn keeps the content interesting longer. The difficulty can be a little too unforgiving at times so expect to get frustrated every now and then. I found the controls to not be as responsive as they should’ve been and they were a little awkward from time to time. In terms of content the game doesn’t have a huge amount for you to hold onto and I did feel that it ended rather abruptly. I did know a little something about Plague Road before trying it out on the Xbox One because a few of my friends told me about their experience with it on PC. Most of them did say it was enjoyable. Thankfully they weren’t wrong and even though it does have a few imperfections it does get more things right than it gets wrong. Without a doubt my favourite thing about this game was its distinctive comic book art style because it does bring the game’s story to life quite considerably. Speaking about the story I must admit that I was surprised by how interesting it was and the best thing is that it stayed that way throughout my time with the game. This then made we want to carry on with my adventure and I’m glad it did because there were a few times where I wanted to give up due to the high and often unfair difficulty. The controls didn’t help matters either because they didn’t always feel fluid and responsive and in my opinion there’s definitely a patch needed here. At the end of day though this doesn’t stop me from giving Plague Road a decent recommendation because even though there isn’t a great deal of content for you to get to grips with the content that is available to you has a few interesting mechanics in play and enough variety to keep things fun and enjoyable.
