While it might once have been the Game of the Year, age and experience have robbed Outcast of its original magic. Luckily, most of that has been replaced by an exciting return to the old and an interesting look back at what the landscape of games used to be.

Given the impact that Outcast originally had on open-world PC games, it's wonderful that original developer Appeal and Big Ben have rescued this game from obscurity by bringing it to modern console and PC audiences. If they really wanted to win over new players, though, they really should have improved the controls and added the ability to skip past dialog during conversations. Outcast: Second Contact is still a great game, but you'll have to tolerate some dated elements to enjoy it fully.

It must be said that the story has the potential to be something special, however the poor implementation of key game mechanics and a lack of variation throughout makes Outcast: Second Contact the perfect example of an unneeded remaster.

In order to make a remaster successful you have to address the problems that the original had, but unfortunately that isn’t the case here. Don’t get me wrong it does still provide you with some enjoyable moments, but the shortcomings it has are just too much to deal with in this modern era. The controls and shooting mechanics in the game are without a doubt the game’s biggest shortcomings and these specific problems do nothing but frustrate you and this can be quite off putting. It’s a shame really because when your traversing throughout the fantastic world the game can be quite fun, but the problems aren’t far behind. When it comes to the story in the game then if you’ve never played it before you will find it very charming. In fact I forgot how enjoyable the story was so it was nice to be reminded how interesting the characters are. I would however have liked to have skipped some certain conversations every now and then, but unfortunately that option doesn’t exist which surprised me a great deal. The presentation side of the game is a bit hit and miss. Visually the game has seen a lot of improvements over the original and at times it can look great. The sound design though has not seen the same improvements, and at times it just sounds like the original especially when it came to the voice acting. I did though enjoy the orchestral score on offer. At the end of the day if you played the original then there really isn’t any reason to purchase this remaster because nothing much has changed. Gamers who haven’t played this before may be interested, but be prepared for a lot of dated mechanics that will ultimately cause you some frustration in the end. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this remaster and I wasn’t sure why it was made into a remaster, but whilst it offers you some enjoyable moments Outcast: Second Contact just has too many problems to get a full recommendation from me. TheI was having fun with this game until I found what I believe to be a bug. I was on top of the area with the temple in the big city. The large doors to the temple don’t seem to open. Out of nowhere I did a super jump and landed inside the walled in area. There were things to pick up. I could go to the top of the temple and look out over the city, but there was no way for me to get out. And I used up all of my auto saves so they were all inside. The only save I did have was from a week ago. I wonder if this is a bug, or something else? Full Review »
