I fondly remember playing Outcast back in 1999 and in my opinion it was one of the best game’s that year, but I must admit that I was a little surprised to see it get a remaster. In order to make a remaster successful you have to address the problems that the original had, but unfortunately that isn’t the case here. Don’t get me wrong it does still provide you with some enjoyable moments, but the shortcomings it has are just too much to deal with in this modern era. The controls and shooting mechanics in the game are without a doubt the game’s biggest shortcomings and these specific problems do nothing but frustrate you and this can be quite off putting. It’s a shame really because when your traversing throughout the fantastic world the game can be quite fun, but the problems aren’t far behind. When it comes to the story in the game then if you’ve never played it before you will find it very charming. In fact I forgot how enjoyable the story was so it was nice to be reminded how interesting the characters are. I would however have liked to have skipped some certain conversations every now and then, but unfortunately that option doesn’t exist which surprised me a great deal. The presentation side of the game is a bit hit and miss. Visually the game has seen a lot of improvements over the original and at times it can look great. The sound design though has not seen the same improvements, and at times it just sounds like the original especially when it came to the voice acting. I did though enjoy the orchestral score on offer. At the end of the day if you played the original then there really isn’t any reason to purchase this remaster because nothing much has changed. Gamers who haven’t played this before may be interested, but be prepared for a lot of dated mechanics that will ultimately cause you some frustration in the end. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this remaster and I wasn’t sure why it was made into a remaster, but whilst it offers you some enjoyable moments Outcast: Second Contact just has too many problems to get a full recommendation from me. I was having fun with this game until I found what I believe to be a bug. I was on top of the area with the temple in the big city. The large doors to the temple don’t seem to open. Out of nowhere I did a super jump and landed inside the walled in area. There were things to pick up. I could go to the top of the temple and look out over the city, but there was no way for me to get out.I was having fun with this game until I found what I believe to be a bug. There were things to pick up. I could go to the top of the temple and look out over the city, but there was no way for me to get out. And I used up all of my auto saves so they were all inside. The only save I did have was from a week ago. I wonder if this is a bug, or something else? Expand

Don’t get me wrong: as someone who was gaming in 1999, I totally see how this would have seemed groundbreaking at the time. However, just because it was good then doesn’t mean it’s still good today. Outcast: Second Contact feels like a product of its time, and like many other products of their times, it’s hard not to look at this game and think it probably should have stayed in the past.

Outside of the story, exploration, and puzzles, combat can play an equally big part in the overall story. But underneath the shiny new visuals, Outcast remains pretty much the same. Which means controls and combat that was fine if a little clumsy in 1999 is even more so today. But just like then, it’s quickly overlooked for what is an adventure quite unlike any other. An impressively realised world filled with character, moments of sheer triumph, and charm. Outcast: Second Contact is well worth a look for both fans and newcomers alike.

While it might once have been the Game of the Year, age and experience have robbed Outcast of its original magic. Luckily, most of that has been replaced by an exciting return to the old and an interesting look back at what the landscape of games used to be.
