The mechanical core stood the test of time, unlike the visuals. I am still waiting for Onimusha to get a decent sequel or the Resident Evil 2 treatment.

Onimusha: Warlords wasn’t revolutionary when it launched in 2001, but it was certainly good and time has been kind to it. This remaster offers a fresh overhaul of the game’s visuals and gameplay that make it feel accessible and enjoyable for a modern audience. The gameplay itself holds up quite well despite lacking the depth some other action titles have, with a variety of enemies and weapons to fight and wield. The story is horrendous and the camera can be difficult, but exploring the world has a nice flow to it that alleviates some of that. Onimusha isn’t a 2019 classic, but it has earned its place as a 2001 classic that’s still more than worth playing today if you’re in the market for good games from bygone eras.

Onimusha is still pleasant and fluid to play, showing off those beautiful precalculated backgrounds that we once loved. However, the remastared version suffers from its lack of new content, and doesn't fix some of the problems we faced many years ago.

Onimusha: Warlords Remastered can feel as dated as you would expect from a PlayStation 2 era title, but Capcom has done a solid job of improving the visuals and reworking the gameplay in order to make it worth revisiting in 2019.

Still thoroughly good fun, Onimusha: Warlords is nonetheless showing its age, and unfortunately doesn't really hold up in 2019. For a fan like me, revisiting Capcom's samurai survival horror is genuinely welcome, but anyone experiencing it for the first time might come away perplexed.

Not an especially great game, but an enjoyable nostalgia-trip nonetheless.

This is still the same game as the PS2 original, and much of the gameplay still holds up, minus some cheap one-hit death puzzles that prove extra frustrating since they occur during some unskippable cutscenes. While the experimental combination of Survival Horror and Capcom-style Action proved more successful with its sequels, Onimusha: Warlords is still an entertaining prototype that is worth a revisit for fans and a first look for newcomers.

Playing through the story was once again a pleasure because it has stood the test of time remaining interesting throughout just like it did back in the day. I forgot just how much variety the enemies you have to face along the way had which meant defeating them again was once again satisfying. Technically the game held up really well throughout my time with it and I was impressed with how tight and responsive the controls were. The combat whilst not containing a huge amount of depth is rewarding at all times which in turn makes you forget about the lack of depth quickly. In terms of content the game doesn’t have a huge amount and you’ll be able to complete the game some-what quickly.I found the camera to be quite annoying at times and I think that’s mainly because they went with the fixed camera style, which isn't unexpected as that was the thing during this gaming ERA. it’s hard to imagine that the original Onimusha: Warlords first made its way to consoles almost 18 years ago and still to this day its considered to be a classic which is absolutely right because for me the game was a gem. When I first learnt that it was being remastered then the excitement within me was off the charts and I’m pleased to say that as far as remasters go this is very good. There isn’t a great deal of improvements present but for me there didn’t need to be because the game has aged really well in my opinion. Obviously there are some improvements though and these improvements can be seen in both the visuals and sound design which definitely look and sound crisper. This then means that the story comes alive even more which might I add is just as interesting now as it was back when it first came out. I also found the combat to be as good as it was back then and whilst it doesn’t have a lot of depth present in it defeating the very varied enemies always felt rewarding and satisfying. At the end of the day then if you’ve never experienced Onimusha: Warlords before then this is the best version to try out because there has been a lot of care and effort gone into this remaster which means you’ll enjoy this game if you’re a newcomer or a fan of the original game.
