Back in 2016 you couldn’t move without hearing something about No Man’s Sky and to say a lot of people were eagerly awaiting its release would be quite the understatement. Unfortunately when it did release it failed in a number of areas and some of the promises that were made never came to fruition which led to a number of very angry gamers boycotting the game. Despite all the animosity that was growing I was one of the few that still saw a lot of potential in No Man’s Sky and whilst it was lacking in several areas I was still hoping it would finally make its way to the Xbox One. Thankfully I got my wish and what came with the game’s release on the Xbox One was a slew of improvements over the 2016 release and without a doubt these improvements and new features have made No Man’s Sky relevant again and in a way gained the trust of its fans again. Without a doubt the biggest inclusion in the No Man’s Sky big update is the multiplayer option. Playing multiplayer on this game is a very fun ordeal and it gives the game a lot more replaybility because it makes you want to return back to the game time and time again. You’ll be pleased to know then that in terms of content the game has a huge amount for you to get to grips with and you’ll be very surprised just how big the game is. The game’s world and planets are that big that you’ll very rarely bump into other players during your time with the game and whilst this is fine at first it would’ve been nice to have bumped into a few more players along the way. One of my favourite things about this game was the story that’s been included. Don’t get me wrong the story isn’t massive and there could have been a little more but what you get are characters that are interesting and every now and then the story does throw up a few surprises to keep you on your toes. This is a good thing because at the start you do have to grind quite a lot so the inclusion of the story stops the grinding from being too tedious and in the end it makes you want to carry on. The presentation side of the game has never been a problem in No Man’s Sky because both the visuals and sound design are perfection and really give the game a lot of unique charm and character. At the end of the day with the new update and new release to the Xbox One No Man’s Sky has corrected a lot of mistakes that it made back in 2016 and it’s starting to be the game the developers promised it would be which in turn means it gets a thumbs up from me. I think it's a wonderful, chilled exploration game. I have spent my time almost free of the story and I just dip back into it as and when I wish. The love that has gone into the game is clear and the hours drift by. The game is massive, obviously, and as far as I am concerned a monumental achievement for a small studio, or any studio.

It looks absolutely beautiful on Xbox One X too.

With its perfectly stylised retro art direction, atypical hybrid concept, intriguing mind-blowing narrative, 65daysofstatic's amazing score/sound design and sandbox variety/liberty, No Man's Sky intelligently hits player's curiosity, creativity, sens of survival and thirst for adventure while delivering a complete genre-defining arty contemplative gaming experience that should leave everybody wandering and creating their own legend for hundred of hours.

Exploring, discovering and surviving space's mystery, beauty and dangers has never been so mesmerizing since Stanley Kubrick's 2001 or even George Lucas' Star Wars.

(And don't worry, most of the people that puts a 0 score are hating people that didn't even played the game since launch: the proof is that they use the same arguments since the original release even if they're no longer valid today. Make your own opinion!)

Such an amazing update. I played on PS4 for 40+ hours with the last updates and can say this takes it to a ten for me. That a tough score to get but I think this deserves it. A truly inspiring game with the visuals and scale. The variety of how you can play this game is what makes it unique.

This game is a calm, exploration based game. Do NOT go into this game expecting huge amounts of action. It has great graphics on the Xbox One port and has stunning clouds and sunrises. It has great graphics on the Xbox One port and has stunning clouds and sunrises. You can join your friends, or a random person, or even just go it alone and on rare occasion find another player, and then build a base together. Two bases. Ten bases. A hundred. You can build as many bases as you want, and they can be as big as you want. Mine resources together. Build together. Explore together. Whatever you want, but again, don't go in expecting GTA or EVE.

Not only that, but it has a large 30 hour story, where you may need to make some tough choices. There are procedurally created missions, and an economy system across many different stars. You can go into space stations and customise your character. And while the developers have been updating the game, the players have been making their own additions. They have made "civilizations" in No Man's Sky. Large groups of players dedicated to roleplaying, farming, or perhaps just documentation are numerous and eager to gain new members.

That's not to say the game is without flaws, however. As with any procedurally created game, there will always be rare bugs, and this is especially true for No Man's Sky and its 18 quintillion planets. If a planet is designated as the last one in a star system, then you cannot use a quick-travel system called "Portals" to go to that planet. On exceedingly rare occasions, you can fall through the floor when exiting your ship. However, there are plenty of easy workarounds for these glitches.

And while I did say to not expect action, there is somewhat of a thrill. There is a "Space Police" that doesn't like when you harm a planet's environment or shoot at civilian ships. Certain dangerous animals can hunt you down and attack you. You will sometimes warp into a star system and you will be met with a massive cargo ship under attack from space pirates.

I would highly recommend this game, with its dedicated community and chilled out gameplay. And again, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME IF YOU WANT AN EXTREME ACTION-THRILLER EXPERIENCE.

Graphics have also been vastly improved and also atmospheres and weather add a great sense of living environment.

I would say this is a strong 9. The reason I gave it a 10 is that let's give credit where its due here. To have come back from the trainwreck launch and add all this with no charge to existing owners is a GOOD thing.

When people say "there is nothing to do, the entire game is a grind" they are talking about the previous versions of the game. Sure, there's a little bit of a grind, but this is a survival game after all, so what did you expect? There is also a creative mode in the game that requires no gathering of resources and allows you to let your creative mind loose without any restrictions.

To summorise: The game was mediocre at launch, now it is very good.

No more will you see extremely ugly planets with ridiculous looking creatures, but now the planets and creatures seem to have been generated much more intelligently. Everything feels much more alive as the creatures feel like they're truly living on these planets. The geography of the planets is also greatly improved as each planet (besides the desolate ones) seem to have its own look to it. This actually makes exploration worthwhile. Multiplayer is a major improvement as the game doesn't feel so lonely all the time, however I have run across multiple bugs while playing with my friend. Which leads me to my next point... the bugs are terrible. I understand that NEXT is a brand new update, but I'm hoping they get these problems fixed ASAP as a lot of the bugs are game-breaking in one way or another. I've come across bugged sentinels who wouldn't stop pursuing me (even after going into a freighter) and my friend is unable to even join my game half the time as it freezes and crashes on him. He also seems to be having an issue where whenever he loads into his own single-player session there is a good chance his game will freeze. Luckily I'm not plagued with this bug, but it's very unfair to those who are. Other than the glitches, this game is very solid. The building system gives the game much more depth, and rather than empty promises like before, this game is a worthy space exploration title. I would wait for a sale if I were you, at least until the bugs are cleared. Expand

This is in most ways, better than the 2016 E3 trailer and in the ways it is not, it’s easy to see both by track record and dedication, it will be.

Lost hours work of progress as s newbie because I keep being attacked any time I fly anywhere?
Games ridiculous, then it auto saves after you die deliberately overwriting your previous saves so you can’t even go back

Still boring as. Don't understand the sudden praise, it's still a large, empty game with nothing to do.

Wonderful for exploration but has some issues with resource management. [Oct 2018, p.75]

No Man’s Sky NEXT was a meditative experience for me. The simple loop of landing, scanning flora and fauna, scrounging for minerals, and finally walking up a hill to experience a breathtaking vista never got old. Others may struggle with the game’s openness, and others will likely feel intimidated by such a non-guided experience. But for those craving an experience full of addictive play loops and the ability to go anywhere? This game is for them.

A fun laid-back exploration experience and it has the unique honour of featuring the largest open world in all of gaming. However, don't go in expecting an exciting or challenging campaign because it's simply not either of those things.
