Back in 2016 you couldn’t move without hearing something about No Man’s Sky and to say a lot of people were eagerly awaiting its release would be quite the understatement. Unfortunately when it did release it failed in a number of areas and some of the promises that were made never came to fruition which led to a number of very angry gamers boycotting the game. Despite all the animosity that was growing I was one of the few that still saw a lot of potential in No Man’s Sky and whilst it was lacking in several areas I was still hoping it would finally make its way to the Xbox One. Thankfully I got my wish and what came with the game’s release on the Xbox One was a slew of improvements over the 2016 release and without a doubt these improvements and new features have made No Man’s Sky relevant again and in a way gained the trust of its fans again. Without a doubt the biggest inclusion in the No Man’s Sky big update is the multiplayer option. Playing multiplayer on this game is a very fun ordeal and it gives the game a lot more replaybility because it makes you want to return back to the game time and time again. You’ll be pleased to know then that in terms of content the game has a huge amount for you to get to grips with and you’ll be very surprised just how big the game is. The game’s world and planets are that big that you’ll very rarely bump into other players during your time with the game and whilst this is fine at first it would’ve been nice to have bumped into a few more players along the way. One of my favourite things about this game was the story that’s been included. Don’t get me wrong the story isn’t massive and there could have been a little more but what you get are characters that are interesting and every now and then the story does throw up a few surprises to keep you on your toes. This is a good thing because at the start you do have to grind quite a lot so the inclusion of the story stops the grinding from being too tedious and in the end it makes you want to carry on. The presentation side of the game has never been a problem in No Man’s Sky because both the visuals and sound design are perfection and really give the game a lot of unique charm and character. At the end of the day with the new update and new release to the Xbox One No Man’s Sky has corrected a lot of mistakes that it made back in 2016 and it’s starting to be the game the developers promised it would be which in turn means it gets a thumbs up from me. I think it's a wonderful, chilled exploration game. I have spent my time almost free of the story and I just dip back into it as and when I wish. The love that has gone into the game is clear and the hours drift by. The game is massive, obviously, and as far as I am concerned a monumental achievement for a small studio, or any studio.

It looks absolutely beautiful on Xbox One X too.

With its perfectly stylised retro art direction, atypical hybrid concept, intriguing mind-blowing narrative, 65daysofstatic's amazing score/sound design and sandbox variety/liberty, No Man's Sky intelligently hits player's curiosity, creativity, sens of survival and thirst for adventure while delivering a complete genre-defining arty contemplative gaming experience that should leave everybody wandering and creating their own legend for hundred of hours.

Exploring, discovering and surviving space's mystery, beauty and dangers has never been so mesmerizing since Stanley Kubrick's 2001 or even George Lucas' Star Wars.

(And don't worry, most of the people that puts a 0 score are hating people that didn't even played the game since launch: the proof is that they use the same arguments since the original release even if they're no longer valid today. Make your own opinion!)

Such an amazing update. I played on PS4 for 40+ hours with the last updates and can say this takes it to a ten for me. That a tough score to get but I think this deserves it. A truly inspiring game with the visuals and scale. The variety of how you can play this game is what makes it unique.

This game is a calm, exploration based game. Do NOT go into this game expecting huge amounts of action. It has great graphics on the Xbox One port and has stunning clouds and sunrises. It has great graphics on the Xbox One port and has stunning clouds and sunrises. You can join your friends, or a random person, or even just go it alone and on rare occasion find another player, and then build a base together. Two bases. Ten bases. A hundred. You can build as many bases as you want, and they can be as big as you want. Mine resources together. Build together. Explore together. Whatever you want, but again, don't go in expecting GTA or EVE.

Not only that, but it has a large 30 hour story, where you may need to make some tough choices. There are procedurally created missions, and an economy system across many different stars. You can go into space stations and customise your character. And while the developers have been updating the game, the players have been making their own additions. They have made "civilizations" in No Man's Sky. Large groups of players dedicated to roleplaying, farming, or perhaps just documentation are numerous and eager to gain new members.

That's not to say the game is without flaws, however. As with any procedurally created game, there will always be rare bugs, and this is especially true for No Man's Sky and its 18 quintillion planets. If a planet is designated as the last one in a star system, then you cannot use a quick-travel system called "Portals" to go to that planet. On exceedingly rare occasions, you can fall through the floor when exiting your ship. However, there are plenty of easy workarounds for these glitches.

And while I did say to not expect action, there is somewhat of a thrill. There is a "Space Police" that doesn't like when you harm a planet's environment or shoot at civilian ships. Certain dangerous animals can hunt you down and attack you. You will sometimes warp into a star system and you will be met with a massive cargo ship under attack from space pirates.

I would highly recommend this game, with its dedicated community and chilled out gameplay. And again, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME IF YOU WANT AN EXTREME ACTION-THRILLER EXPERIENCE.

Graphics have also been vastly improved and also atmospheres and weather add a great sense of living environment.

I would say this is a strong 9. The reason I gave it a 10 is that let's give credit where its due here. To have come back from the trainwreck launch and add all this with no charge to existing owners is a GOOD thing.

When people say "there is nothing to do, the entire game is a grind" they are talking about the previous versions of the game. Sure, there's a little bit of a grind, but this is a survival game after all, so what did you expect? There is also a creative mode in the game that requires no gathering of resources and allows you to let your creative mind loose without any restrictions.

To summorise: The game was mediocre at launch, now it is very good.

No more will you see extremely ugly planets with ridiculous looking creatures, but now the planets and creatures seem to have been generated much more intelligently. Everything feels much more alive as the creatures feel like they're truly living on these planets. The geography of the planets is also greatly improved as each planet (besides the desolate ones) seem to have its own look to it. This actually makes exploration worthwhile. Multiplayer is a major improvement as the game doesn't feel so lonely all the time, however I have run across multiple bugs while playing with my friend. Which leads me to my next point... the bugs are terrible. I understand that NEXT is a brand new update, but I'm hoping they get these problems fixed ASAP as a lot of the bugs are game-breaking in one way or another. I've come across bugged sentinels who wouldn't stop pursuing me (even after going into a freighter) and my friend is unable to even join my game half the time as it freezes and crashes on him. He also seems to be having an issue where whenever he loads into his own single-player session there is a good chance his game will freeze. Luckily I'm not plagued with this bug, but it's very unfair to those who are. Other than the glitches, this game is very solid. The building system gives the game much more depth, and rather than empty promises like before, this game is a worthy space exploration title. I would wait for a sale if I were you, at least until the bugs are cleared. Expand

This is in most ways, better than the 2016 E3 trailer and in the ways it is not, it’s easy to see both by track record and dedication, it will be.

People who bought the highly hyped, very soon useless pre-launch goodies were crippled with bugs and many couldn't progress at all --- there was no refunds on that.

I might give it a try (I played at a friend's house originally) if it was a 1$ mobile app, or a free web game. Because the FPS rate is similar to what you'd expect from these when it's not written very well... also, I wouldn't bother until 2 more YEARS of patches, because it's still a mostly static theme park where you have to mine a lot.....

Addictive, fun, full of magic. It has several technical issues, but still. You won't find anything like it.
I stopped Outer Wilds to play this, and don't get me wrong. Outer Wilds is one heck of an indie game. But looking at what NMS is now and what is still going to be, there is nothing like it. Absolutelly nothing.
If you like space opera, scifi stuff, minecraft and terraria crafting style, GTa, Mass Effect and Skyrim.
You just owe to yourself this masterpiece.

The survival elements are fairly unforgiving, and I would be okay with that if they just made a few basic quality of life improvements that would help make it much easier to recover. A tweaked mining tool that doesn't need to constantly be fed carbon, a slightly bigger ship to make death less painful early game, and a better variety of resources scattered across planet surfaces would be nice. Eliminate the fact that running and jumping drains your oxygen, up the amount of time you can spend outside in hazards and make it easier to locate you ship, base or other people. Do all that and you'd have a half-way acceptable game. As it is right now, it's too janky and demanding for any but the most dedicated of players.

A solid basis to build from, but this game still needs about 5 years of work to get to something worth talking about.

Additionally - I totally agree the worlds (planets) could be more diverse, same as space station interiors, building etc... however how much this game has to offer for these little issues is completely acceptable, and I would recommend it anyway. The incoming patches will add more diversity (accordingly to what I is announced), and the game can be even better. Minus three points for this little lack of diversity described above, and still way too many bugs - they must be fixed some of them unable to complete main plot. I am Polish and the translation to my language is really good with minor errors or not translated phrases, names... I suppose this is also well taken care in other languages that are available for this game. NMS Next offers many different missions that could be assigned from different Agents - on planets, space stations or even in space meeting them in Freighters. Addionally - you can play dogfigts against piates, smugglers or hostile civilizations. I have been flying around between 5 stars completing the tasks and did not want to go to main task because it had been so much attracting me... The rewards and new weapons, ships, building the base, trading. The building base must be here mentioned - you can now without any limitations build own base in any planet, create a farm (with some space plants), and employ - scientist, farmer and other spaecialsts that will help you develop your weapons, create new blueprints. There are also simple tasks of the treasure hunting - searching for artifacts or extraordinary blueprints (also spaceships could be found). I played this game back in 2015 and it was not that good.. I had been getting bored quickly. This one is much more interesting. There are also new views - you can now have the 3rd party view of your hero as well as spaceship. You can customize the suit of your Astronaut so that you for example will be playin the Gek. Also the sound and the music are good however it could possibly be more and better sounds in the spaceships (again more diversity required - maybe employing some of the developers of Elite Dangerous - they have been creating in ED really good sounds ;) ). The game will be developed and there are plans to allow completing the community missions that will be rewarding. Additionally now you can play online with friends - up to 5. This also could be expanded allowing meeting all of the players in the galaxies all the time however who knows I have not played the MP yet however I heard it is even more attractive. There are apparently big plans towards this game from the developer (this could be much better from any space simulator. Recommended for all fans of Star Wars, Space, all People interested in extraterrestial life so called UFO. I give 7 / 10 mainly for the bugs, and little repeatitveness in the planets flora, fauna, space stations inside landing pads could also be more elaborated, the space is also too colourfull. There should be much less of the nebulaes and more black systems. Anyway it is worth of playing. Expand

However once that was sorted with multiple updates, and the expansion from PC to PS4 and X-Box One, the biggest update, cleverly titled "NEXT" update has finally launched in mid-2018 and I decided to try the game out on PC and X-Box One with the latter I played in late 2018. And after playing a few hours of it, I have one thing to say about going on cool sci-fi adventures, and that is the fact that "I like it." despite the fact that I play Creative Mode more than survival. With beautiful art styles, many many many planets to explore and potentially settle on with a base, and a great range of missions. Some things are a bit annoying when you haven't got the right material to use as ammo for your blaster which I struggle on but that is probably due to my inexperience with this game.
I have never played Star Fox, but this is the closest that I see myself being in. Exploring, crafting, communicating with the "locals", and even going through some story mission which from at the moment I try to help out an alien who of course crash landed a ship and I try and get the communication signal which connects to that alien and with one of the primary goals is to try and meet up with that alien. With that, being a Freelancer is actually a good thing in a galaxy. I would only explore and resource gather because of those Daily Missions but I say that I can recommend this game to anyone, with the condition of automatically update the game so that the current update is past the "NEXT" update because reviews before that important update was very negative. Customizing your appearance, and even freelancing and doing things with up to 4 friends in a world is actually a fantastic way of adding replay-ability. Some of the controls are a little flunky with certain vehicles and can be modified with the controls but I'm just going to blame on my inexperience. Many first time players would have to get use to that. The clear answer is, the galaxies are endless, so do your own thing in No Man's Sky and be a nomad or a freelancer. There is many different modes to choose from and I enjoy this game. Period.

The exploration is a blast! I look forward to it every time I warp to a new system. While many planets share similar characteristics, you occasionally run into a planet that so alien making exploration that more interesting. The interaction with aliens is also kind of cool. While on a planet, there can be a lot to discover. Cataloging animals/vegetation/minerals, responding to distress calls, exploring alien ruins, searching crashed freighters, stocking up on materials or negotiating at a trade post; with all of these available on almost every planet and moon you explore. Finally you can build base(s) and that in itself is a game given how many options are available to you. The more you explore and build in this game, the more likely you will learn new schematics for building ship and base upgrade, as well as tech enhancements for your multi-tool and exosuit (space suit).

Space combat I find to be clunky and difficult at first. Just keep in mind that the initial ship is not great for combat, and you can upgrade to something better. Speaking of ships, you can also have giant freighters which you can set mission objectives, whether they are trade, exploration or military.

One final note, I'm playing this game as single player, I have not tried the multiplayer so I can't rate that aspect of the game.

The best space exploration/combat game, period. After 35 hours I have barely scratched the surface of the mystery and wonder that is No Man's Sky - tight controls, beautiful landscapes, and a sense of feeling really insignificant in the universe all sell the atmosphere and the mystery.

I'm not big on mining-esq games - Minecraft never really did anything for me. And make no mistake, there is a BIG presence of Minecraft here, but I don't mind, and indeed ENJOY surveying planets, mining rare / exotic materials, and building/expanding/upgrading my base. If feels a bit grind-y (sometime a LOT grind-y), but when you figure out what to mine / build (Uranium > Launch Fuel) it becomes less wandering around grabbing stuff, and more quick, precision mining for what you need.

The world itself is large... infinite, actually. Try and scroll to the edge of the map, and it's impossible. This leads to a sense of loneliness when entering new systems, even resulting in isolation, further selling the atmosphere. First encounters with alien beings (friendly and unfriendly) lead to interesting situations, and a couple have even come back around on me (some good, some bad).

For me, the big surprise was the space combat - it's great. Cycling targets, weapons, navigation, speed, managing your ship's systems - everything is perfect. I was worried after some initial encounters that the combat itself was going to be too easy, but being ambushed by 8+ pirates in an asteroid field put an end to that. Even now with an A-class fighter I still don't underestimate being outnumbered - stop paying attention to your shield and you'll get blown out of the sky faster than you can say "Vy'keen".

Is it a PERFECT game? Far from it. I've died twice due to floor-fall glitches in space, and some of the mechanics are beyond infuriating (want to buy that ship that just docked? Better have the money RIGHT NOW), but the good far, FAR outweighs the bad. Oh yeah, since it's launch in 2016 they have charged not a DIME for "DLC", instead opting to update it for free. More game companies should follow their lead.

(Note: I have not experienced any save corruption issues. I also make sure to save at a manual point, then exit to the main menu, THEN shut down the game, in order to ensure i'm not cutting off the game from doing what it needs to do.)

There's a lot to do in this game, maybe too much. It's overwhelming, the game doesn't give you much to go on. More frustrating than fun. Basebuilding and exploring are great though. Framerate issues are also one of the things that makes this game frustrating.

Performance issues on all platforms and the repetitive grind are still there and I don't think it deserves a higher score than a 7 because they lied to us in the past. Bad GUI, had to google a few times just to know how to craft, obtain, or find a bought item in the inventory.
Too many scripted events, feels too constructed (forced encounters on space, flying-by NPCs exactly where i am on the planet), its not sandboxy.
Had a small high while building a base, lost all motivation again when picked up the missions. Even the main missions are the identical takeoff-jump-land-run-activate-grind-repeat gameplay loop over and over, just to get the next little piece of story.
Helping a fleet being attacked by pirates will punish you, as soon you hit the fleet ship accidentally, you loose standing, standing with is annoyingly grinded with the annoying faction missions. Then after killing 5 waves of annoying enemies, with a bullet sponge miniboss at the end, you get nothing for this. Just wasted time and standing.
Fuel draining is just getting annoying, forces you to do more dull meteor grind between your tasks, while you are often being attacked from pirates where you almost can't escape.

Unfortunately, it does not deliver in gameplay. Flying is great whether its in space or in a planet's atmosphere. Being able to just fly to a planet without any loading screens is really incredible. Though when you actually land and walk around is right about where the game gets clunky and for me, almost unplayable. Movement and responsiveness are just horrible. Mining with your tools, shooting hostile creatures, and terraforming are flawed to the point that they ruin the game for me. Crafting and building are fun, flying is fun, but unfortunately a lot of the game takes place on foot, and the gameplay at that level doesn't cut it for me. As far as the universe this game takes place in, there really is a seemingly infinite amount of planets to explore... although they're just procedurally generated environments so what you'll end up finding is a planet that's essentially 99% open and empty areas.

Great concept that didn't quite deliver as a fun game.

    JOURNEY TO THE CORE

    BEFORE WE START:
No Man's Sky was developed and published by Hello Games and released in 2016. This title was released under completely adverse conditions compared to those presented at various conventions and fairs, and therefore, it was heavily criticized. After dozens of updates, the game became very similar to what was originally announced. The title has been fully released on Game Pass PC.

    THE TAKE OFF:
No Man's Sky, as a pure survival game, instantly throws the player into the clutches of a planet immersed in the infinite universe. This planet can randomly be peaceful or malevolent, making the first steps more or less challenging depending on the type. The initial stages mainly involve learning the basics of survival, as well as constructing a small personal base. After these steps, the player will be unleashed into the universe of the Atlas, a mysterious deity or legend that requires the player to reach the center of the universe. As an interlude, the player can literally explore endless planets, take on dozens of side missions, and build bases on planets or immense frigates.

    STALENESS UNIVERSE:
The gameplay of No Man's Sky is as varied as it is repetitive. In addition to the mere survival aspect of collecting resources, surviving in hostile planets, and fighting sentinels, players can venture into cooperative missions and raids on frigates and outposts. Furthermore, a small part of the game certainly involves space battles, albeit very simple ones. The true heart of the gameplay in this immense title lies in the exploration of thousands of planets, which often differ greatly, and the various space wrecks. A small mechanic that encourages exploration is the bestiary and encyclopedia of creatures and objects on the planets, offering small rewards in currency.

    WHAT COLOR IS THE SPACE?:
Graphically, it is rather average, with a wide variety of designs and coloration of the different worlds. Certainly, the imagination behind some plants and creatures is exceptional.

    SCATTERED ECHOES:
The audio component, like the graphics, is average. However, its great merit lies in creating extremely relaxing and mesmerizing situations, with fitting soundtracks for deep space.

    BUT WHY 7?

    PROS:
No Man's Sky is currently an extremely enjoyable and relaxing title to play and explore. The vastness and creativity of the game world rarely become tiresome, and the game's writing is unique and detailed, keeping the player engaged. Additionally, the main story, being very philosophical, will certainly stimulate the minds of the most imaginative players.

    CONS:
The major problem with No Man's Sky lies in the immense repetitiveness that it reaches within a few days of gameplay. Every space station, NPC, planetary base, frigate, and most dialogues will always and uniformly be the same. Moreover, the game's strong survival aspect often leads to tedious farming sequences for normal gameplay actions. All these factors make it a highly enjoyable game even today, but it certainly doesn't lack some issues dating back to its release.

    RATINGS:
    Gameplay: 6.5
    Music: 7.5
    Story: 7
    Survival: 6

No Man’s Sky NEXT was a meditative experience for me. The simple loop of landing, scanning flora and fauna, scrounging for minerals, and finally walking up a hill to experience a breathtaking vista never got old. Others may struggle with the game’s openness, and others will likely feel intimidated by such a non-guided experience. But for those craving an experience full of addictive play loops and the ability to go anywhere? This game is for them.

A fun laid-back exploration experience and it has the unique honour of featuring the largest open world in all of gaming. However, don't go in expecting an exciting or challenging campaign because it's simply not either of those things.
