I went into 'Murdered: Soul Suspect' not expecting much and despite the less than favorable reviews I bought it anyway. On paper this was a game I typically wouldn't like as it lacks any inherent danger or combat of any kind, but for some reason I was charmed by it's gameplay and story.

If I could compare this to anything in the past it would be the outlandish visions of David Cage.

If I could compare this to anything in the past it would be the outlandish visions of David Cage. This is very much like his games 'Fahrenheit' or 'Beyond: Two Souls'. Though 'Murdered: Soul Suspect' controls better than both, it lacks a lot of the choices though.

I think ultimately it was the story that engaged me the most and I felt it compelling to play. I probably completed it in just over two sittings and loved every minute of it. The game just clicked with me and I have a feeling that like many games like it, it's going to be a love it or hate it kind of experience.

To me 'Murdered: Soul Suspect' is a very flawed gem. It's broken, it's a bit cheesy and it doesn't offer much of a challenge but it's still a great game with a story that kept me guessing to the very last moment. 'Murdered: Soul Suspect' has more twists and turns in it than a roller-coaster and it's so satisfying to see the story unfold.

It's about a detective who is trying to figure out who murdered him. This game isn't action packed or full of gun fights and explosions like many other games, but it is more like a detective-noir game, which in my opinion there aren't enough of. This game dares to go where other games won't. 9/10

I personally enjoyed this game. It is not action packed nor an RPG or SHMUPS. It is slow paced, but I believe that adds to the environment and style and was intentional. The voice acting was also done well and seemed to fit the character models.

I do not know what some of the low score reviewers were expecting out of this game, but I got about 10 hours of game play and will pick it up to play again in the future.

The Good: The story is pretty well done and that makes up about 80% of the game. While it's not great and there are a few holes in it, the story makes you want to know who the killer is and why they are doing what they do. The ending was fairly lackluster and easily recognized by the more astute player, but the rest of the story was good. The characters are hit or miss with Ronan, the main character, doing a serviceable job as the main character. There are a few duds, like the sidekick character Joy who was just annoying the entire game, but the overall experience was well done, due to the mostly wonderful voice over work done by guys you might recognize from Animes like Fullmetal Alchemist and others. Overall the story is well done and I liked the setting. There's a history lesson about Salem here if you pay attention.
The Bad: The actual gameplay elements are all below average to terrible. There's virtually no gameplay beyond collecting stuff (which you'll do for the other 20% of the game) and stealth killing the few enemies in the game. The NPC's are clunky and disjointed and regularly look like they are made of 2x4's with the awkward way they walk and move around. The game portions of the game are just not well done and, because there's no real combat in the strictest sense of the term, you basically just go from one investigation point to another collecting things that are in your way. The game is basically a framing device for the story, a bad way of artificially lengthening the story. In short, being a game actually hurt the overall product here as it's quite clear that they pretty much blew their entire budget on the story and plot itself and not on the technical part of it.
Overall, if this was something like a book and not a game, it would have been alot better. While the story is not great, it's still really good but the game got in the way of my enjoyment of the story. It should have been something else and, for that, it will forever be one of those forgotten stories they tried to sneak in the dead of summer. This game is definitely not worth 60 dollars and I probably wouldn't recommend it for 30 either. I would not buy this game for more than 20 dollars and, for that price, you'll get what you pay for.

The game reviewers of the world should be ashamed of themselves when a good game like this ends up with a metascore in the low 50's. Story-wise this game is better than circa 90% of all games ever made, so even though the mechanics aren't the best, this is an easy recommendation.

THIS is what's wrong with the industry. Reviewers and websites want to insure business, They do that by "pleasing" the majority, and they do that by guessing what the majority would and wouldnt like and let that bias affect their own review of the games. This works sadly. But that is also why many who would enjoy a game such as Murdered Soul Suspect won't even try it. Sad reality.

This game doesnt have "action" it doesnt have shooting, stealing cars, and destruction. And it is better for it. In its own genre and taken as a separate entity, this game shines.
It is a mix of old school adventure atmosphere, smartass detective work, it is slow but it is great. The Story keeps you interested, the acting is top notch, the relationship between the main character and his partner is akin that of Booker and Elizabeth in Bioshock Infinite.
This game is fun and funny, ok in some areas and amazing in others. It is a relaxing experience, and one that should be experienced. You'll feel like you are watching Ghost (the Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze flick) at times, at others it'll be a Tex Murphy experience.

It is a fun and enjoyable experience, I am more than glad I bought this game, and if this genre is your cup of tea, you will be quite glad you had this adventure. You can't beat possessing poeple and reading their thoughts.

Buy this game and enjoy it, if you have your doubts, wait for a sale. But don't miss it.

    SCORE: 6.8/10

I'm recommending at sale price. For five dollars, it's worth a play through in 6-7 hours. It is a decent story, better than a decent amount of stuff on TV. Nice twists, good ending. Not spectacular, but pretty good. Graphics are also decent. No Ethan Carter or The Witcher 3, but pretty good. The voice acting is also solid. I've seen worse b-movies for sure.

Murdered soul suspect in short is very different to your average game, For example you are a ghost, do not have a weapon and you can possess other human beings.

The game starts off quite promising showing you flying out of a window and shot several times, however as you progress through the game it becomes very tedious. For example you are constantly looking for clues to your murder and other side missions, which is fine BUT there is literally no skill whatsoever in this.

You then come across Demons, which again at first you think is a pretty cool feature / challenge but it really isn't. They are too easy to sneak past or execute.

The story is ok and the only reason I continued to complete the game was because of this, with saying that though for me the ending was very disappointing.

There are positives though, for instance as mentioned above, the story will keep you entertained mostly, the achievements fly out at a rapid rate and that's brilliant for all you hunters out there!

Lastly graphics ... I will try not to be too critical as in some places / settings the graphics were decent enough, but all in all at times it looked like an early XBOX 360 game which isn't acceptable for a supposed next-gen title..

Voice acting is not too bad at all, which is surprising as if anything I thought this would be where Murdered Soul suspect would struggle.

I have to say I didn't really enjoy the game however it's different and for that reason I have to give Square Enix credit for at least trying something new.

Positives: Voice acting, Achievements, Decent enough story

    Negatives: Graphics, repetitive, too easy

    I give it 6/10

Murdered: Soul Suspect is at best described as a modern version of the point and click adventure along the lines of Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls with some of the more open control options found in Alan Wake.

The game is a pseudo open world game in which you are provided limited access to the city of Salem, MA during your investigations. I say limited access because your movement (even as a ghost) is blocked in this world to very specific paths, making the game feel very linear. I consider this a flaw in the game, but Square Enix has tied it to some existing lore which makes it hard to fault them. Basically as as ghost you can pass through anything that exists in the same plane as yourself and you can't go in to any consecrated location without having a door or window opened to invite you in, (It's amazing how much you learn through watching Supernatural) and while I find these to be specific design issues they do flow with the context of the game.

The game presents very little challenge in terms of difficulty as everything is pretty much multiple choice with unlimited choices and I am not certain that you can actually fail, even in the event you can fail, once you reload your save your right back on target without having lost anything. It's a saving grace in that you don't have to replay areas in the event you screw up but it's also a fault in that the game comes off as incredibly easy. This did make the game relaxing to play though with the context of the story attempting to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Your ghost powers do not feel as freeing as I feel they should have as once again everything is pretty much multiple choice. Once you possess a human NPC you will be presented with any number of four possible options regarding that character. It might be to influence, read mind, listen, and/or see. Each of these options have a limited number of multiple choice options and are required to some extent to move on in each questline but do not seem to have any huge impact on the narrative. Ronan will also find various ghost to interrogate throughout the primary and side questlines, these interrogations are more like basic conversations in which you ask one or two questions and get one or two responses and your back to moving right along. Some of them tie in to other parts of the story and those can be interesting while the others just feel more like filler. I have to make a side note on this, the best part of your ghost powers is that you can possess cats, like common house cats. I'm not joking at all, It was awesome playing as the douchiest creature on planet earth.

While making your way through the primary questline of the Bell Killer you will be able to solve additional crimes throughout Salem. They may come from other ghost trying to get closure allowing them to move on to the afterlife or collectibles located in a each specific area that tells the story about why that area is haunted. This extends the game a little as it keeps you from just running from point to point and completing it in a few hours. The investigations are not as complex as they appeared in LA Noire but does feel familiar to those who played that title. I do feel the story is very predictable on almost every level but others may find themselves surprised by some of the twist and turns, it isn't quite a walking cliche, but it's certainly close.

Graphically this game will remind people of Resident Evil 6 (as does the art style), which isn't a bad thing as it was a great looking game last gen. That is one of the major issues for me. We are now eight months in to the Xbox One / PlayStation 4 generation and we are still getting last generation graphics, this is primarily due to cross generation support and quite frankly it's time to move on. The game controls are as solid as most modern third person games with nothing to make it stand out or hold it back, again Resident Evil fans will be familiar with the default camera and movement as it also feels like it was pulled directly from Resident Evil 6.

I feel that many people who would enjoy this game are afraid to commit to it due to price and reviews. I feel this game is a solid rental and could be 100% completed in 1-2 days of casual play. Those who need to find all 200-ish collectibles (for achievements & trophies) may need a third day to play through it but I really don't see much replay value after that. I highly recommend checking Red Box, Gamefly, or any other rental service in your area and give this game a shot. If we see a price drop below $19.99 it would be worth the price of admission.

Most of these reviewers could not get their heads around because they didn't know how to play something different then another generic shooter. Waiting for any user reviews to make these paid scrubs look bad.

The concept, adventure, heck even point and click, story are all seemingly innovative. But if any delivery was lacking, specifically from any advertising as seen in these reviewers paychecks.

Simply by going on what is offered here on this game. I would have rated this game between 7 & 8 for it's unique qualities.. There may well be some draw backs which I may yet find myself biting my words. As I await my copy, possibly in containing some game bugs, glitches. Most of what I have read in their reviews is not enough to deter from a new type of gaming experience. Would be welcomed as a fresh edition when different to yet another generic over hyped piece of bucket bought trash that these same scrubs have given 10 out 10.

    First the positives

    1) The game play is unique pretty cool being a ghost able to walk through walls,
    2) It is very polished and performed well on my somewhat old PC.
    3) Rich story line and well acted and developed characters.
    4) You can be a cat and press a button to meow!!! HOW COOL IS THAT!!!

    The negatives....
    1) Yes, walking through walls is fun... but then you limited to only being able to walk through certain walls. I understand there are limitations to what can be done in a computer game in this regard.... but still it was very obvious.
    2) Replay-ability is 0....
    3) The story was very short, say 8-10 hours, combined with the 0 replay-ability does not justify the retail price... not even close.
    4) The game play is limited.... It felt like a virtual scavenger hunt sprinkled with where's Waldo. Point and click... point and click. Oh look a demon.... New area.... Point and click. etc.... the entire game....
    5) Oh yes and the demons.... the only possible aggressive actions the character can take are towards anything in the game are demons. Which basically equates to walking up behind them and pressing a random key and mouse button combination to get rid of them. Lame and annoying.....
    5) Because you are a detective you are supposed to solve crimes... In this game it involves walking around in an area until you find all the clues and then deciding which of these clues are relevant to the issue being solved. But the only negative in not getting the correct clues is.... a reduction in the rating of how good of a detective you are. The one you picked that was wrong is grayed out then you try and pick another clue. After missing 2 you are at the minimum fail for the current mystery... you might as well start clicking them all.
    6) To many cut-scenes where you just watched the story lines, a great deal of them was in between areas where you would expect them. But other were it really odd places.... and felt unneeded...
    7) Much of the game involves finding stuff... Other then the clues for the investigations EVERYTHING ELSE CAN BE IGNORED.. The notes from his wife, the signs on the walls, and the location specific items that "reveal the story".. ALL Irrelevant and inconsequential to the game. All filler add to add some sort of time consuming depth to the game. Also note that the game play time I gave of 8-10 hours included me trying to find most of these items. Once I realized that they did nothing but wast my time I stopped collecting them near the end of the game,
    8) THE ENDING WAS CRAP!!!! I cant stress it enough!!! THE ENDING WAS CRAP!!!! You would expect a highly polished story like this to really reward you in the end.... NOTHING. Note when you start playing it will be obvious at one point what the ending should be for our hero if he succeeds in solving his murder. I was expecting a very polished and satisfying end.... what we get is equivalent to "hey baby" ... roll credits. WAAAAAAAAT!!! I literally yelled that and my wife asked what was wrong.... I can see possibly why thy did it, to keep a sequel option open. But by doing it the way they did detracted from the kind of ending a game with this level of polished story line deserved...

So much more could have been done with this game concept.... it sad that this was created.

NOTE: Most of the positive reviews from users here in metacritic are all fabricated. Some I am reading sound more like tag lines from the companies advertising department.

Using your ghostly powers is fun, but solving the cases requires little brainpower. As a result it's fun, but lacks in some areas.

As far as the writing goes it's solid. The case is interesting, the setting is great, the main characters are likable, and there's plenty of Salem lore you can find scattered throughout the game. It's also filled with very compelling side-stories that you can find through the game's many collectibles and helping other ghosts pass on to the other side. If the storytelling has one flaw it's that you'll always be a few steps of the characters. It takes a shockingly longtime for main character Ronan and the gang to figure out what the killer's intentions are, even though it's so painfully obvious. There are still some nice twists though.

When it comes to the gameplay, there just isn't much to it. It's cool to be able to walk through walls, possess people to read their minds (even if they ever think anything interesting), and teleport your way to new areas. When it comes to the powers the game really does make excellent use of it's great concept. Hunting down the Salem's many collectibles is a blast because of it.

Solving cases on the other hand, is a much weaker experience. There's nothing terribly wrong with it, there's just no sort of challenge. All you do is look around an enclosed part of whatever environment your in at everything that stands out. Nothing to it. Some things you inspect will have a little minigame to them that's just as simple and quite easy. There's also no penalty for failing any of these. You just get to jump back in and try again, no questions asked.

Not even the game's occasional demon attack packs any sort of challenge. You just sneak up behind them and use a button prompt to finish them off. The game gives you plenty of easy escape routes should you get caught. None of this ruins the game though. You're powers are still a blast and just exploring the world and looking for all those collectibles is much more fun than it should be given the great setting. The lack of difficulty just means you feel like a detective that just took the world's simplest case.

If you're looking for a mystery filled with puzzles that will have you scratching your head, this game will disappoint. Yet, it's a unique concept that's been solidly realized. It offers a nice alternative to all the Sherlock Holmes games out there. Not too mention a fairly easy set of achievements. You may find yourself wanting more from the game from time to time, particularly in the realm of challenge, but overall it can still be quite a lot of fun with a good story to boot.

Murdered: Soul Suspect can best be described in a single word: intriguing. The story kept me playing this adventure until the credits rolled, as the gameplay was not great.

The average reviews and poor sales show what is wrong with the industry. Yes, the combat is poor, the game isn't really difficult, it's short and there's no replay value, but it's still a great game that definitely doesn't deserve the 5/10 it holds. It has an unique concept, focusing on the story and investigations more than just combat and forcing a generic story down your throat. It also has side investigations that expand upon the setting, and bring in more focus to the general area. Overall, it's very much worth the price. Expand

I was able to get this for free thanks to Xbox gold, and I'm glad I didn't pay for this.

The game has a great concept (tracking down who murdered you seems interesting), but the execution leaves much to be desired. The first scene shows you getting murdered and yet, once you pass into the afterlife, your character needs to gather clues about what happened, like they weren't there in the first place. The choices for "solving" cases are silly and poorly constructed. I'd say they punish you for not having the same logic pathway as the developer by giving you a lower rating, but I couldn't see anything that the rating system did in changing the game so it's hard to say I was punished.

As you progress you get to posses and influence creatures and people. At one point I got to inhabit a cat, which I was very excited about. I thought it would finally be my turn to claw up the furniture, climb on things I shouldn't, and knock down any glass or breakable object near a ledge (just like my roommate's cat); however, I was unable to do any of these things. Abilities don't feel like they are there for me to do what I want, they are there for me to do what the developer wants.

In the end, that's the best description I can put to the game. It's one where you don't get to do what you want, you need to do what the developer wants. You don't have much in terms of options, your interactions with the environment and the people therein is purely a narrow funneled path. I wanted to like this game, but even Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit if you're outside North America) gives you more options than this; a game that tried to brand itself as an interactive film!

The characters themselves are not very interesting. It's hard to feel emotionally connected to the same people our protagonist cares about because we have almost zero interaction with them ourselves. If you want to converse with a ghost you only get one question to ask them before you get a generic NPC response. Possessing people and reading their minds is quite droll, at least Watchdog made that interesting with people's secret online lives.

tl;dr The interaction with your environment is highly limited, the characters are poorly fleshed out (not an afterlife pun), your abilities aren't there for anything more than solving specific puzzles and can't be used for your entertainment (turning off people's tv while they are watching does nothing), and there's no feeling like you're playing the game your way. Get Sherlock Holmes: Crime & Punishment if you want a mystery game or get Wolf Among Us if you want a more interactive story game.

Truly a misunderstood game with a fantastic story that keeps you going despite some very average gameplay. It's a great game and the ending is sure to make it worth you're while, I know I didn't see that coming. Sure, the demons seem a little unneeded at some points but they do change the pace a little which is fine with me. Although, I do wish there were more monsters.

    Things I liked

    - Great story
    - Awesome ending that wraps everything up for you
    - Doesn't ever really slow down and no filler parts in the story
    - Ronan was a great character and a prequel would have been awesome and completely different, making for more creativity
    - No bugs to speak of
    - Looks great
    - Voice acting and writing are pretty good
    - You get to drive a cat

Things I wasn't too fond of

    - Gameplay was a bit bland, doing the same things over and over again but Telltale does the same thing so why can't Airthight Games?
    - Some of Joy's animations were a bit clunky
    - No variety in enemies
    - Some of the NPCs are exactly the same
    - Not enough ghostly powers

It's a good game if you're looking for an interesting, creative story with plot twists all over the place but don't expect groundbreaking gameplay. You can compare it to the Telltale games where it's all about the story instead of adding any significant gameplay elements. Give it a shot!

Great atmosphere, and the plot keeps you involved throughout the game. Unfortunately the end is not so exciting. Also the games feels short, i was able to complete it after 3 days and not so many hours in total. But i enjoyed every minute! Good game!

The game has a simple but interesting story. Nothing great, but it gives you some excitement when playing. The rest does not match and reinforces the only good thing about the title.

Murdered: Soul Suspect lingers almost exactly at the quality middle point as a game. It doesn't do anything particularly good, nor does it do anything terribly bad; it's just okay.

Murdered: Soul Suspect is often interesting, with a clever story and cool characters. Other times it’s a messy affair, with pale graphics, boring gameplay and confusing mechanics.

Murdered: Soul Suspect could have been a really fun detective experience, but it's actually an average point and click mystery game with higher production values.
