I was a massive fan of the first game and it was without a doubt one of the best games I’ve ever played, so to say I was looking forward to Middle-earth: Shadow of War would be a massive understatement. Thankfully the game delivered in all areas and I would go as far to say that it’s better than the first game, which I didn’t think they would be able to do. Thankfully the game delivered in all areas and I would go as far to say that it’s better than the first game, which I didn’t think they would be able to do. The world in the game feels alive from the get go and it has so many things for you to do that you’ll be sinking hours and hours into the game. The story accompanying these hours of gameplay is fantastic and the best thing is that they keep things gripping and interesting throughout. The combat in the game is better than the first game in my opinion, and the main reason for that is because it just gives you more of a satisfied feeling. I was also very impressed with the skills and abilities that presented themselves and the game definitely gives you a rewarding feeling, which in turn makes you want to sink even more hours into it. The battles in the game have you sweating and keep you on the edge of the seat at all times, and I must admit that I’ve never had so much fun being in a battle on a game. The presentation side of the game makes Shadow of War stand out even more, and that’s because the visuals and sound design make you become even more immersed in the game. At the end of the day fans of the first game will fall in love with this game almost immediately. They’ve kept everything that was good from the first game and in some cases they’ve improved in some areas, which is absolutely fantastic. What really stands out in the game though is not once did I get bored when playing, and that’s amazing because I’ve sunk in a massive amount of hours. Without a shadow of a doubt Middle-earth: Shadow of War is one of the best game’s I’ve played this year and I can see the game being up for a number of awards. Expand

I miss the days of cheat codes being a string of random buttons. Now you have to pay for cheat codes. Microtransactions do not belong in this game... i love how the critic reviews dont care though.. wouldnt want to upset the gaming industry and give an honest review.

DO NOT BUY. Nothing but a long boring grind unless you pay real money for loot boxes to get ahead. pass. Loot boxes have no place in a $60 game. Loots boxes are nothing but greedy and predatory. They are gambling, and they take advantage of people that they know will get addicted to this.

Loot boxes hid the game's true ending behind a gambling paywall.
This is disgusting ina full priced game, let alone a single player game.

Also you're not able to go past level 60 but yet I'm constantly fighting level 62, 63, 64 and 65 fighters... how is this so? Is the game openly cheating to try to get the upper hand to just beat you now and then?? Also the 4th castle you take over from Sauron is a level 70 castle.. level 70? How can this be when my max level is 60? At first I did not understand the game and it was very difficult but I have come to understand it better but there's always those little cheating moments the game likes to throw in to piss me off. There are many levels and training to be done first to you, then your army before attacking other users castles which is the fun part until you face a captain that all the Avengers themselves together couldn't kill. . Despite all the microtransaction stuff I still think the game itself is OK. The gameplay itself is definitely entertaining and playing with orcs is fun but still no excuse for the overall lackluster open world. Side quests have next to none actual connection to the story and just feel repetitive. The main quest line is interesting but could be improved a fair bit as well.

As I didn't finish the game yet I can't say anything about the expected grind at the end but will update when it's necessary.

Overall it is a good game with a poor open world, so I'd say wait for a sale since if you're not totally into the nemesis system, there are similar games with a more organic and better overall feeling.

Game ruined by microtransactions. This game is getting good scores from the legacy gaming media because they never have and never will look out for the consumer. If a publisher wants to ruin their game by putting gambling via microtransactions in at the cost of quality then they must accept the poor review scores from the consumer.

Before I got to the end of the game this game was a 9/10 for me. I then confirmed what my friends have been trying to tell me about the true ending being locked behind a pay wall or astronomically large grind loop. I can either spend a "Destiny" amount of hours grinding for Legendary Orcs, or spend an abundance of cash getting legendary orcs through loot boxes, because Legendary Orcs are the only type of Orcs that will even give you a fighting chance at the end game battles. Seriously. The end game battles CAN NOT be won with Orcs lower than Legendary status. I refuse to spend money on that **** and I desperately BEG players to not buy them either. PLEASE!!! Looking at SWBF2 it looks to be even worse in that game. Probably have to buy that 2nd hand as well (Soon as EA announced no season pass I knew there was going to be a massive catch).

IGN giving this a 9 should be just another piece

First off no I don't care about micro transactions and yes I think this is a fun game.
This game is not unlike the first one. It has fun stealth mechanics, somewhat repetitive gameplay, hilarious orcs that really bring life to themselves (you actually want some over other just because of what they say/do), and an interesting story even if it is a bit of a stretch to call it all cannon.

To top it all off the siege battle are awesome, it feels like you are in the massive battles from the movies.
So why the negative review? Because after 30+ hours in I missed a cutscene mid game and tried to back to my Xbox home screen to restart that part of the game and watch the cut scene. When I returned to the game all data was gone, my entire save erased magically. This is beyond game breaking and when I went to customer service their idea was to turn it off and on again. This is not something that should be in a game of this caliber. Save your money and spend it on a company who can finish their games

It combines all these aspects into the lore and world of Tolkien. It isn't canon by any means, but it is an enjoyable story and only the most die-hard fans would have a problem with it. My favorite book and movie ever is The Lord of the Rings, and I'm fine with the liberties this game takes.

As for the microtransactions and loot boxes that people have complained about, it is far overblown. You absolutely do not need a single thing, and I have seen multiple gaming publications repeat that same things. When I read Metacritic and some forums, I would swear that the people complaining have never actually played the game. That said, I wish they weren't there because I don't like them in general and don't like where the games industry is headed with them.

The game is super fun, looks to have 40-60 hours of extended gameplay for just one play-through, and offers ultrawidescreen gaming that performs very well at 3440x1440p on ultra everything with a 1080ti.

I'm not going to complain about the micro-transaction, that's just how things are now. This game was my biggest disappointment in recent times. It failed to fix the problems of the first game, Talion still cannot target an enemy (you hit what you intend to 60% of the time) and he climbs things wildly, even if you do not intend for him to. The bodyguard is a great feature except that he will assuredly betray you. The betrayal mechanic creates a lair of anxiety, and of divestment as it devalues any investment you put into collecting and improving your orcs. Once an orc betrays you it gets this Iron Will trait which you must clear to recoup your loss. Once you've cleared it your orc goes insane and looses his personality. The process requires you to delevel your orc which undoes what you may spend most of your time doing. Find a cool singing orc? Spend hours leveling him? He'll just betray you. You'll have to fight a bunch of Ring Wraiths which is the most annoying part of the game. These fights mostly consist of repetitive dodges and swinging for very little damage. You have to do it a lot, and it is redundant. The end game is mostly just managing being betrayed. There isn't really any reason to do anything in this game. Expand

From all I've read the loot boxes only become an issue in the post game and even then can be worked around. Small gripes so far include a disconnected feeling between gear level and Talion effectiveness (some sense of how the gears add up to a whole in the menu would be nice. However I can't stand hit numbers in the actual game unless it is a top down style game. Should always have option to turn those off or reduce at least). I quite like RPG elements. Also not sure if my regular actions are increasing my XP as not seeing any visual feedback. I would think saving groups of soldiers might be a side quest but no sign of that so far (freeing slaves was in SOM) I can understand the backlash on the loot crates /'P2W / Gambling' I personally think at minimum there should be an option in consoles to OPT OUT OF ALL PAID MicroTransactions. Because there are people with serious addiction problems who can get hooked into the buzz from this randomized loot etc. If people choose to opt back in, it should be on a 48 hour or more cooling off period. The mind tricks that are from 'grinding' and 'Free 2 play' manipulation are a real sad development in gaming drive for more revenue. Options to set limits on daily or weekly spends. It's a real shame this controversy will destroy the ratings and reduce initial sales and pre-orders on what should have been one of the most exciting releases I feel. It would be nice if the gaming industry at large took stock of this totally avoidable fiasco. I myself reduced my GOLD ed purchase down to just the basic edition. Really the farce with the charitable DLC also annoyed me. I mean come on, bit of basic common sense and decency please. Expand

3.in the previous game the number of enemies were fix, but in this one they keep spawning all the time, so you cant ''plan'' and execute like before, overlord mission feel cheesy asf.
    4. the dmg you inflict is just to low compare to the dmg you take ex: a little grunt will take 25% of your HP per attack, the counter window is really smaller compare to the previous game, a captain CAN 1shoot you, when you are in these big fit, there is basically nothing you can do except run and even that dont usually work, feels unfair
    5.flying mechanic... my man... painful
6.mission seems harder the first time you do it, it feel like they want to force death upon you
    7. fighting wraith is disgusting, counter window to small, they attack off screen you barely see it and so punishing and if you fight them while fighting other orc, i was dying inside
8.i was chasing this legendary orc that was godlike and when i finally dominated him he lost some of his attribute....? wtf is going
9.at some point i sent my epic orc on a mission, give him 2 reinforcement and for some reason my epic orc did some dmg (i think) to the 2 others and they started attacking him and they killed him ...?! this happened to me twice.... wtf AI
    10. the AI .... is really bad....
last but not least micro transaction , i dont think it has his place in a full priced game but it wasnt intrusive but then again i cant stop thinking about how this game could have been without it

Pit fights = are a way great way to leveling orcs fast and easy but be mindful your orcs can die.
Conquest = Fort assault but against other players or against yourself but no pvp which I’m thankful it’s not in game.
You don’t have to pay a single dime using real money to make the game easy, just take your time with the game and have fun, that’s it. Yes there is a difficulty setting from easy to hard. Btw try not to rush through the game or you’ll regret it later in Act 4. This doesn’t get 10 out of 10 but a 9 since there are micro transactions in a single player game.

Compare this to 2k, Battlefront 2, and any other multiplayer based game involving microtransactions giving people unfair advantages against other people and it kind of makes sense that these be placed in a single player game rather then multiplayer.

Now that that's out of the way, the games awesome, way more cutscenes better in every way. You get to fight in Gondor with tons of allies making you feel way more immersed in the Lord of Rings World. Plus the Nemesis systems dope as ever.

Bonus: I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THESE GUYS DO BATMAN. The nemesis system would be beautiful in a game like that, and they've already been working with their combat system...

First and foremost, anyone with a modicum of common sense should ignore any review where the person hasn't played the game and/or is using the review mechanism here as a platform to campaign for how they - in their infinite wisdom - think a game company should be run. It's a bastardization of the system here and sends a false signal to someone who is really interested in the game itself.First and foremost, anyone with a modicum of common sense should ignore any review where the person hasn't played the game and/or is using the review mechanism here as a platform to campaign for how they - in their infinite wisdom - think a game company should be run. It's a bastardization of the system here and sends a false signal to someone who is really interested in the game itself. Oh, and let's not lose sight of this - I have not yet had a SINGLE instance when I thought "Man, I really am going to need to buy a loot box." /soapbox

Now, onto my take on the game.

After about a dozen hours in the game to date, I can say confidently the game is simply fun. I was a fan of the first game, and enjoy this particular style of game (the Mad Max, Batman, Assassin's Creed genre). This game takes everything that was good on the first and expounds upon it. The Nemesis system is genius, pure and simple. The personality the orcs develop and, as the game goes on, grow into is awesome to watch. The setting feels like Middle Earth and more specifically like I would envision Mordor to be like. Playing on the hardest level, the game isn't a cakewalk either. The challenge is real yet fun at the same time, especially given the aforementioned Nemesis system and how the orcs grow as they kill you. The game almost rewards you for dying. :)

Is it all rainbows and butterflies? Nope. You have to turn a blind eye to some of the mythos which the developers take some rather significant liberties with, that's a fact. Load times are a bit longer than I'd like to see as well, but not so much so as to be a real detractor.

In the end, if you like the genre of the game, give it a shot. Don't buy into the micro-transactions if you don't want to. If you don't mind them and have disposable income, then hey...it's your game! Enjoy it! I know I am.

First off to get your army leveled you need to go to the fight pits, which in theory are pretty cool and fun but are actually horribly designed. A lot of times your orc will just stand there while the enemy hits them until they die, other times they'll just run after minions while the captain kills them. After this you Have to defend your fort which isn't too bad (IF you fully upgraded your fort and have high leveled orcs) now multiply this process by 4 or 5 times just to get to the end of the game.

Aside from that combat seems to be really poorly done, it's fine 1v1 (which never happens) or even 1v5 but most of the time you're fighting 1v20+ and a captain, and then you get ambushed by another captain at the same time, which is be fine if the game didn't actively try to sabotage you; if you need to dominate an enemy quickly, the button will just not work and after pushing it the 3rd time it'll work but you'll be hit by another enemy before you get it off. Trying to dodge? You'll be forced to dodge over an adapted captain who will just throw you to the ground even though you are dodging the opposite direction. Need to counter an enemy? The game will flash the button prompt before you can push it. You actually saw it and pushed the button in time? The game won't register it and you'll still get hit. Successfully countered multiple times? The game will slowly force your camera into a bad angle making extremely hard to continue countering (ie looking up at the sky instead eye level). Now to top it all off every time you fight a captain he has to introduce himself (sometimes twice) and then again when he's fleeing, this would be fine but they make it unskippable and force pause the game canceling any action. A lot of times this will be an ambush causing the captain you're currently fighting to one shot you (I was playing on Nemesis difficulty till the end of Act 3 easier difficulties won't be as bad) once they finish their intro. The intros are kind of cool the first few times you see them, but after a while they become insanely repetitive, especially when your rival is an orc that just literally screams at you and you have to listen to it every time you see him. To top this all off they through in loot boxes in a single player game (with minor online elements).

If you're gonna play, start it on casual and just power through it as quickly as possible, anything harder and you'll just want to gouge your eyes out.

    3. While they defenetly are fun to do Fort Battels can be either pretty underwhelming and easy or extremely hard depending on your skill and how much time you have put down gaining intel on the Warcheifs and Overlord.

The graphics are on point, the captains that adapt to your fight style is amazing, the 80+ skills you can acquire is awesome and overall gameplay is unbelievable. This game is definitely a candidate for GOTY once they fix some of the bugs/glitches there are.

When you’ve been a gamer for a very long time like me, starting out on the Nintendo (excite bike and Mario brothers), you come to appreciate works of art like this game. You can tell monolith took their time on this game and didn’t do the usual release of a half finished product like most. Most of these reviews are most likely from the younger generation that have never played a Nintendo game before.

The world is much larger this time, but bigger isn’t always better as every area in this game feels generic and unmemorable…
Back are the assassins creed like syncing point that lets you scout out this games collectables to unlock new moves in the skill tree…
Skill wise there isn’t anything special…
You’ll easily have every skill unlocked by time you reach the end of act 3 which takes around 19 hours.. and is the base of this games story…
skills for the most part unlock moves you had in the first game though they have 1 of 3 modifiers that take away their annoyances from the first game like allowing celebrimbor to counter attacks while you’re doing a ground finish or add an elemental effect to a special attack like poison or fire for example…
There’s also a really cool weapon and rune system here where you can craft runes to give you boosts like xp or life drain.. and each rare, epic, and legendary weapon or clothing item has a challenge attached to them that will unlock a perk… giving a little personality to each
These items of course picked up off of orcs with the same rarity
Getting rid of the annoyances is the best shadow of war does, you’re now able to run extremely fast taking away the annoying fleeing enemy moments and there’s a cool double jump added to the parquor making you feel like you’re a super hero running through the game..
Which honestly may be the reason I feel this world is so forgettable…
I’m able to get around it so quickly that I never had the opportunity to notice or care about my surroundings…
a new change that I’m not a fan of is the fact that special moves are now tied to a meter instead of attack chains… of course this meter is the only way to make this games boss encounters work... but I felt like I was less in control and that building up uninterrupted attack chains was unrewarded…
a mix of both systems in the next game if one comes would be cool… where successful chains fills the meter at a faster rate than were given here….
There’s also an eleven rage meter that lets you unleash multiple attacks while invincible, but this meter takes so ridiculously long to fill up that it might as well not even exist... I used it probably 4 times my entire time playing because I would save it as a just in case thing…
The nemesis system is back once again but this time the game from the jump is focused on domination after the first act...
It’s up to you to go and capture 4 towers to get to the end of the games story…
though I found myself gaining followers naturally through story, I didn’t have to do much hunting towards the end…however in the first few hours, this domination thing is annoying as you’re only able to capture orcs at your same level or lower…
you’re able to humiliate them and lower their level.. But all this does is make them run away and forces you to have to go find them again somewhere else…
this to me felt like the game just wasting the players time...
I see no harm in letting the player just take the orc at a lower level and letting them move on..
With your orcs you can command them to kill other orcs or prove themselves and become the bodyguard of a warchief... you can assign an orc to be your bodyguard to help you in combat…you can also go capture the bodyguards of warchiefs and have them betray… making their battles easier as you can take out each warchief individually to lower the level of a fortress greatly with each one…
While you’re doing these hunts and gathering intel for the weakness on your next target you have to be warry of how you treat your followers, as they’re able to betray you as well…
and once you feel you’re ready to take on a fortress you assign your orcs to positions, you give them weapons and armies to increase your odds of success and you charge in to take what’s yours…
The review has a bit of a negative tone, but Shadow of War is a really good game….
Its more of the really great shadow of Mordor with deeper systems and less annoyances…
But to me it also has less heart and soul…
This is an enjoyable experience.. But a very forgettable one…
I give Middle Earth Shadow of War
    a 7.5/10

The game has decent combat similar to the arkham series, however the game begins to get repetitive near the end of the game and forces you to grind quite a bit or pay with mircotransactions, the story however is one of the redeeming factors of the game
if you do not mind grinding near the end of the game this is for you but would not recommend it if you hate microtransactions

If you played the first one and found it fun, this game is just as fun. It takes the same formula adds some improvements, a good story and it'l keep you busy. I found the first game a little too short and it was one of the few games I finished and still wanted more. Shadow of War makes sure by the end of it you're done.

It has a well paced story that wraps up nicely without being crazy hard or far too simplistic. At the end there's a section that isn't hard but it is a grind. Expect to spend ~12 hours repeating similar content to get to the "complete end".

If that grind had been about half as long this would be a 10 rating from me. .

Great game that improves on every aspect of the original. A lot has been mentioned already. One thing I particularly like is diversity in the environments, i.e. it's not all grey and gloomy like the first game.
Looks AMAZING on the Xbox One X in 4K. Micro transactions are optional, unnecessary and can be ignored.

I found the sieges to be quite fun, the random orcs have much more personality than Shadow of Mordor (my personal favourites being the Singers/Bards and the Orcs that say "maybe you've got a problem with one Orc, maybe a hundred, but ALL orcs, maybe the problem's with you"), and the combat is fun with a tonne of new abilities. In addition to this, we get to fight amazing enemies such as a Balrog and Sauron (not in a quick-time event this time). Even better, Ratbag returns for the sequel and Ologs make a splendid entrance into the game with the introduction of everyone's favourite Olog betrayer, Bruz the Chopper. Even with the micro-transactions, this game improves almost everything I loved about the first game and made it even better. My only problem, you can't Shadow Mount unbroken graugs as you could in the original (but they fix it by allowing you to summon your own dire caragor, graug and even a drake). All in all, an exceptional game which everyone should play. Expand

Also the pattern of the missions started to feel very repetitive soon and since the surroundings wasn't very interesting, and the generally the graphics felt dated, it was hard to love.

The Nemesis System is one of the greatest addition to videogame history, the orcs you can find are all hilarious and memorable, and the twist from the Third Act is just amazing.

And, as of 17th of July, the Fourth Act is no longer a grind, but a streamlined and shortened experience. Don't listen to the other critics, if you actually cared about the game and planned your defenses, you never had to buy one single lootbox and can carry your orcs from the beginning to the very end.

Hack'n'slashing Orcs doesn't get old very easily. And as you acquire more skills, it only gets better. And by the end I was mostly experimenting with how I could cause the most chaos and destruction.

As soon as you have leveled-up sufficiently, I strongly advise you to play the online Vendetta missions. They are an easy way to get nice loot and weapons, and some good captains for you army too. And because there is only one real focus/target per mission, you can really get into the action, and see how you can play-out the various enemies & other options against eachother. Good fun :-)

All-in-all I give the game an 8 as I was able to amuse me with it for quite some time.
Definite minus points are the orc caption introductions that cannot be skipped or turned off. Especially during fortress fights, it can get very tedious being forced to watch all of the captain introductions (as well as captain deaths) in the middle of a fight.
Also, the parcour system generally works well, but when it doesn't work, and you get stuck on a small ledge, or just aren't able to climb something, it can be quite frustrating.
The epilogue also could have been shorter: that still is quite a grind to get through. But it probably is like that because they used to use that to sell loot boxes.

This means grinding out the nemesis system through dieing and pit fighting your dominated captains. The missions range from laughable to insane to laughable within the first 20 or so hours. The game likes to throw dozens of enemies at you, when you are confronted with captains. This was fun in the beginning, but when you need to watch when to press A, B or Y, it becomes one big cluster f#$%. Apart from that the story is non existent. It's like everything is compartmentalized like gondor missions, balrog missions, siege missions, outpost raids, she elf missions, elf challenges, artifacts. Expand

Perhaps you might slap your forehead in dismay by the goofy plot or looseness to the source material but what's undeniable is, that Middle-earth: Shadow of War is a lot of fun.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War has high production values and is a fun open-world slashathon, but it's stretched thin. The storyline starts off promising, but all of the interesting characters get pushed aside to make room for nothing of consequence. Hours upon hours are lost to the abyss as players engage in a relentless cycle of gear upgrades and Orc recruits. Assaulting fortresses and conquering territory loses its appeal a bit too quickly. The game is pretty entertaining in short bursts, especially when Talion can make full use of his powerful abilities. Still, the lack of finesse when it comes to combat will make fighting feel a bit bothersome. The Ranger is at his best when he's eliminating the opposition with surgical precision, or making use of hazards in the environment. All in all, this title is worth a look; just don't expect to grow too attached to it.

While it's huge and complex in many of its systems, it still feels as if it is caught in 2014. [Issue#194, p.68]
