Whilst the previous installment of the series had a grim nature to it, this game just feels a little bit comical and childish at times.

Gameplay and Shooting mechanisms are also pretty terrible. Maybe a decade ago it would have competed within the market. No comment on the graphics. The first cutscene in the game was enough to know it was going to be bad.

Word of advice, if you had high expectations.. I'd pass on it

The game play is where it loses me the most, the story is run of the mill gangster revenge tale, cut scenes well acted and told. B
ut the things that you do in between are repetitive and get samey after few hours, the mechanics are all good, driving feels right, shooting and cover are implemented right (bar some issues i had switching over underfire) collectibles are pretty fun and interesting as well.

But it can become boring after the 10th time going into the same bar or factory and either killing a guy or blowing up some property. then driving to point A and repeating again. just started to lose me around 4-5 hours in.
Very much like a Ubisoft style of open world, just icons everywhere full of repetitive missions and nothing unique like in a Rockstar game. The world is more realized than a Ubi game so if you enjoy Ubi games you'll enjoy this even more. (you could maybe call it a 7 if you do.)

Probably would only recommend to rent or buy on sale, its fun for few hours but wears thin anymore than that.
hopefully DLC can fix some of these issues and add some more variety, but probably cant fix everything with DLC.

*JUST A DISCLAIMER i only played for 6 hours so if it magically gets better and it changes the whole structure of game play then ignore me, but it seemed like it was setting up the whole game from here on out

At first I was very excited to enter New Bordeaux as Lincoln Clay and start progressing through the game. It didn't take long for the game to become rather repetitive however. All you do is pretty much drive from A to B, kill a bunch of enemies/steal cash at a hideout to harm the boss sitting on the district. Rinse and repeat through the districts and that's about it. The final missions at a district will however spice things up a bit - and these missions are actually kinda entertaining.

You'll get rewarded with $$ as you complete missions but there's not a lot of ways to spend money in the game. You can buy weapons/call for mobster support etc. but you'll get a good amount of weapons without spending a penny tbh. I would have preferred the option to buy houses/buildings/garages. Also I would have preferred the option to store vehicles of my choice. It's not like Mafia 1 or 2 where you decide which vehicles to store - in Mafia III you'll just get a few cars and that's it.

The skybox looks like a bad version of a Nintendo 64 skybox and the weather will change all the time - it's almost comical to watch the changes in the weather - from sunny to rainy in 0.5 seconds. Also I felt a lack of enjoyment while driving around New Bordeaux. The jumps around the city are not suited for the cars - I've seen several cool jumps that my car (even at 135 mph) didn't manage to do properly. On top of this the game has several bugs. Sidemissions like "Are we cool" can not be completed as they're glitches. You'll see flying cars, cars with no collision and missions objectives that won't spawn several times during a play through - that of course is not acceptable at all.

The positives of this game are the soundtrack, the voice acting and the story. The gameplay will be fun at times and it had me entertained, but it did not live up to my expectations at all :( I would recommend buying the game when all the bugs/glitches are fixed and a customization update for Lincoln and cars has been released, but as of right now, the game only seems 90% done

So far my favorite thing about this game has to be the story there's a lot to like how they go about telling the story and see a lot of potential for Mafia 3 to deliver a compelling story overall. Speaking of story I should also mention that I would not recommend this game to anyone who is too easily offended by racism if you have followed any coverage for Mafia 3 Hangar 13 has made it clear that they have put a lot of emphasis on Racism and as an African American myself let me tell you from what I have seen so far Hangar 13 has nailed it and really makes you feel like people react to you differently because Lincoln Clay is African American. Now for gameplay anyone who's looking at this game and comparing it to the likes of Rockstar Games last title Grand Theft Auto 5 you may find yourself more disappointed then anything, yes you can do things that can be done in Grand Theft Auto like freely roam around the city, steal cars, and escape cops but from what I've played so far Mafia 3 lacks the same amount of freedom offered by Grand Theft Auto and find Ubisofts Watch Dogs a better comparison to Mafia 3 as it' stealth, shooting, and cover mechanics are more similar too Watch Dogs. I will say that I do find myself irritated from time to time by the way Lincoln Clay moves throughout the world as he feels like there's a weightlessness to him when he moves and find myself over running past cover and driving can be a little iffy. The AI also leaves a lot to be desired in Mafia 3 as someone who's played many stealth games stalking and using stealth to eliminate the enemy is very unsatisfying the enemies vision is terrible and in multiple situations guards will have a conversation with each other and when they finish they move away from each other and out of there vision basically asking you to perform a silent takedown on them the AI is at least better though once bullets start flying and will kill you if you don't utilize cover. As for graphics there not much to write home about for the graphics in this game character models look good as well as facial motion capture but I have noticed some poor textures when I played especially in the environment at one point when I was driving around sunrise the lighting was so strong it made it difficult to see and later in my play through I was driving past some tress and they just looked blurry until textures popped in later. Now for anyone is worried about 2k holding back reviews because the game might be broken I can tell you right now you don't have to worry I haven't run into any bugs or glitches at the moment nor have I noticed any noticeable frame drops. Overall with the roughly 4 hours of Mafia 3 I have played I would say it's decent overall Mafia 3 still has a lot to prove that it could be a great game however I do have some fears that Mafia 3 may find itself having repetitive game missions where a majority of the main story is spent taking down Mob racket and really hope Mafia 3's main story will be mostly spent completing unique and dynamic main missions if it doesn't Mafia 3 could really be a squandered opportunity by Hangar 13's debut title

There are a lot of things that mafia 3 does right. The story, voice acting, outstanding sound track, and the setting, a fictional city modeled after New Orleans, are all welcome additions to the mafia franchise. Do not go into this game expecting GTA levels of mission diversity or customization. The missions are mostly there to push forward the narrative but it mostly works because I found myself genuinely enjoying the story. With the use of flash forward interviews and clips, Mafia 3 gives the player background on many of the characters and explains the turbulent times that are filled with racism and corruption in New Bordeaux. However, the issues that I have with the game are some buggy mechanics and repetitive missions. A lot of the missions in this game feel like side quests and some of the actual side quests feel like they would work better as story missions. That aside, some of the game's main missions are fantastic. For example, early on you find the main character, Lincoln Clay, hunting down a mob boss in a theme park with alligators and roller coasters. The mission then concludes with a shootout in a creepy, swamp themed ride. I was actually blown away with this and was hopeful that the rest of the game would have many unique missions akin to some in GTA5. However after the linear start to the game, most of the missions are fetch quests that play out in similar fashion; find a mobster, infiltrate a building filled with thugs and either kill or recruit the target or destroy some illegal contraband. The purpose of these missions is to do enough damage to that region's Mob Boss that he will be forced out to try to kill you. This is when more variety comes into the missions because each boss mission is different. Once that is completed you assign that territory to one of your lieutenants which unlocks perks in your weapon wheel, such as cars, hit squads to support you, or a weapons dealer that delivers guns like a hot and ready pizza. This type of structure gets repeated in the different sections of the city but you can choose where you want to attack next. All the while some missions reveal a cut scene here or there to push along the story. Despite some of the short comings in mission structure and variety, I enjoy the gameplay. The third person, cover shooter gameplay mostly works well, allowing for stealth or all out gun fights. Sneaking up behind an enemy and stabbing him in the neck or blasting him in the head with a shotgun is very violent but also satisfying. Another problem lies with the AI, these enemies are dumb! Maybe it is because I have the game set to normal, but during some cover based executions only a blind man wouldn't see me kill a guard, yet other enemies close by seem to miss it all the time. Playing the game safe in stealth mode is definitely not as rewarding in terms of fun. I prefer to go in guns blazing. But all out war is risky because bullets do a lot of damage and if you have not deposited your wallet via courier in the weapons wheel, you loose half of the money in your wallet when you die. The police in the game can be called by witnesses if someone sees you committing a crime. This is where I feel the game really messes up. I think the battle between the police and Lincoln, a mobster, should be more prevalent in the missions. It is too easy to escape the police vicinity before they arrive and too difficult to evade them if they catch you. A better balance of difficulty and interaction would really benefit this game. With the open world that focuses mostly on building your empire, I wish the cops had a larger presence while also giving you a chance when you are out numbered.

In summary, this game has its ups and downs but I am glad games like this exist. It is not the most graphically impressive game or the most technical but it is fun. I enjoy the shoot outs, occasional quality story mission, as well as good narrative cut scenes. They have this game at RedBox and gamefly, I think it is worth a couple of nights of rental if not more. This game is being reviewed way too harshly by fans. It does not deserve a score below 6.

As a black man in the south 4 years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, New Bordeaux is a clash of the old and the new where racism is still overtly present and a major part of the narrative. The game captures the feel of the late 60's quite well (speaking as one who was around in the 60's) from the collectible Playboy and Hot Rod magazines, to the music, look and feel America in the late 60's.

The gameplay while repetitive was a lot of fun for me and never really got old, although late in the game I did start to do the bare minimum when taking over districts. The settings varied enough to keep me interested in my 40+ hour playthrough. I enjoyed using stealth and the detective mode mechanic and whistling to attract bad guys to silently take down, and when I was discovered it was very easy to go from stealth to a very frenetic combat.

On the negative side there are some major issues such as the 10 times the game crashed, clipping, hit and miss graphics, and repetitive missions with not much variance. If it were not for the frankly amazing narrative and the mostly satisfying game play Mafia III would have been a 4/10 game, but taking into account the aforementioned positives I scored Mafia III as a 7/10 and if the crash bug is ever patched I would easily give the Mafia III an 8/10.

While the game is flawed I found plenty of fun to be had in my playthrough and say if you find the game on sale for $40 (what I paid) or less, then I would recommend it.

The main complaint with that games was that there was little to nothing to do besides the main story. Mafia 3 tries to correct those complaints, but goes too far and loses what made mafia 2 so great.

In Mafia 3, you play as Lincoln Clay, a mixed race Vietnam soldier returning to his home of New Bordeaux, a re-creation of New Orleans. the city is both large and detailed, every district is unique, if sometimes small. The game looks, and sounds great, speeding through the buoy listening to CCR on the radio really puts you in the setting. Racism is the star of the city though, in many instances, Lincoln is profiled because of his race, it is one of the only games i have ever played where racism has been shown with such power. While not being from that area nor having seen racism to such an extend practice in front of me, I cannot judge the accuracy of the game. You fall back into the group you were with when you left and the early missions seem engaging, thoughtful, and promising. Lincoln makes for a strong character, he is dead set on getting revenge, but he does show his human side here and there. Your under bosses, while being interesting and thought provoking, tend to come off as whinny when things don't go there way.
It's when the game turns into a tale of revenge when the game starts to take a dive. You are thrown into the video game equivalent of a pyramid scheme, you must do several side missions to reach an "Under boss", you must take out both under bosses in a district to get to the "Lieutenant", you must take out two lieutenants to reach their Superior. and when you take out all three of the superiors, you reach the final mission. The side missions, range from extremely repetitive to horribly bland. your objectives will usually include 'kill this person', 'destroy this', or 'interrogate him'. With every Lieutenant comes a major story mission, which don't seem to be as good as those in Mafia 2, so there isn't even any emotional payoff following each series of repetitive missions.
With each of your under bosses comes their special perks. Some I found more useful than others, like the able to deposit my money, request guns, have a car delivered to me, and calling in guys to help me clean an area. The gameplay consists of the usual hide behind cover and wait for people to stick there heads out. That being said, I stilled enjoyed firefights because of the realistic atmosphere and resource management that is there., however, I found that going in guns blazing required more health and ammo than I could hold, so i would typically play stealth because it was fast and easy. Driving feels good, and there is even a setting for more realistic driving, in case anyone who plays the game also loves racing games.
the best metaphor I can think of when describing this game is like when you order a streak at a restaurant that looks great, the mashed potatoes are amazing, the service is nice, the amount you got was good for the price, and the steak itself is burnt and flavorless. Mafia 3 has the fine details right, but when it came to the core of the game, it is just not there. Best soundtrack of 2016!

This is all held together by a mediocre plot centred on Lincold Clay; who is meant to be a goody (?)

Clearly, a lot of effort was put into a beautiful, 1968 New Orleans replica, where the radio goes static when driving through tunnels and where actual man-eating crocodiles can be used as dead body dispensaries. However, this heart cannot be found in the core game itself. The soundtrack/radio, although full of bangers, is sort of all over the place. The level design affords little variety in mission approaches. Bugs are a persistent problem; with cars often materialising just feet from your character. Worst of all, the game fails to immerse you in the mafia fantasy in the way Mafia 2 managed so well.

But sadly this game is bogged down by its extreme repetitive nature. In addition the game has a lot of bugs. The city can sometimes feel bare with not a whole lot to do. If you are looking for a game with a great story and decent gameplay then I'd give it a try but other than that Mafia III is not a super impressive game and it falls flat on my expectations. Expand

I'll be honest I haven't played "MAFIA II" before playing this game, as I thought it is not important to do so, and it's, in fact, unimportant beside the feeling of nostalgia.

MAFIA III is not a bad game, but this isn't really a compliment. The story is a great classic vengeance adventure. The music is excellent and the whole 60s' vibe is sublime. The weapons and the way they shoot and play out in the game was great. The driving was pretty decent. The Season Pass is great and better than any other story in the game, which is very unfortunate.

The graphics were mediocre, sometimes embarrassing. The repetition in this game is tedious and most of the time frustrating. If you have played "Assassin's Creed Syndicate" then this game is much worse in that aspect. What's the point of driving a heavy truck or a boat for 3 km multiple times? I understand doing it once or twice in the whole game, but it asks you to do so more than I could personally bear (I left those missions unfinished). Also, I wished there was some instant travel inserted in this game. The long drive between missions isn't very amusing.

Overall, this game is not worth $60 or $40, but if you can get it for less, then it's a great filler in between games.

The game play its self was very repetitive and slowly became unenjoyable seeing as every mission was a copy and paste of the last.
The story was good, but the boring gameplay, the unnecessary length of the game, and the glitches just ruined it.

The story like the previous 2 mafia games is fantastic. The side missions are a cumbersome, and the game literally turns into doing the same exact missions over and over and over again.

For me the game is worth it just for the amazing soundtrack. The story is interesting, and the general idea of the game is good, but both missions and the action are repetitive, sometimes too much. I finished it and don't regret it, but if you are not a fan of the 60-70s there are similar and better things out there.

For me, the game is about half and half. Personally, I like the range of weapons, cars and the size of the map. But when it comes to graphics and storytelling, this is a chapter in itself. Repetitive missions, total simplicity of fights and stupid artificial intelligence. Optimization is also half and half. But I also have another problem with Mafia 3. The game is often lagged, chopped ....

The game and especially the protagonist really intrigued me initially but unfortunately it just wasnt a very good experience overall.

Lighting is terrible, missions are beyond repetitive and the plot doesnt really go anywhere.

Mafia 3 is a game that gets in its own way. The city is beautiful, the themes are mature and the story, writing and performances are all easily some of the best we’ve had in games this year, but then the incredibly repetitive missions, wonky AI and technical glitches all make getting to the meat a royal pain in the arse. I’ve never loved and hated a game simultaneously quite as much as Mafia 3.

An ambitious study of crime and race slightly spoiled by niggling bugs and menial missions. [Christmas 2016, p.74]

Mafia III put a high priority on its backstory, immersion, and presentation. That work shows in the quality of the narrative and the tragic characters, but unfortunately left little to flesh out the city of New Bordeaux. It's worth playing for the campaign, but perhaps there isn't a need to rush.
