Mafia 3 has a great deal of style, the cars are cool, the music (when it works) is fantastic and its historical accuracy and politics is accurate and well put together, but as a game is completely fails.

The game is so full of bugs that it is often unplayable, you can be speeding down a river in a speedboat being chased by a drug-dealing gang and then, out of nowhere, underneath your boat will appear a massive dam which makes your explode, get stuck and your mission fail.

Story wise, the opening is fantastic with a strong and unexpected twist that intends to drive the rest of the game, but the rest of the story does not keep up with it. Essentially, you collect gang leaders with stereotypical personalities and are meant to do them favours to keep them on-side. That's where the gameplay comes in.

Gameplay - terrible, without a doubt the worst AAA title I've ever played in this category and it is for this reason that I sold my copy second hand after about 20 hours of playtime with completion of the main story in sight but just not worth it. There are several massive problems, but these are my 4 in particular:

    (1) almost every single mission and substantial side-mission takes place, and collectable can be found, in the same 6 buildings or areas which makes no sense - if you've killed 100 gang members in a building, why would the gang leader decide to come and camp out at that building?

    (2) again, almost every single mission and substantial side-mission involves the exact same tasks, either (a) kill a specific person, (b) kill everyone or (c) blow something up. This becomes so repetitive so quickly that it's actually painful to play, you will turn the game off and not want to restart it because it just is not entertaining. This level of repetition has not appeared in a game since the original Assassins Creed;

    (3) you don't really relate or like any of your under-bosses (apart from 1, because he's a pre-existing character from the earlier Mafia series) and your management of them is limited to an occasional (repetitive) decision. Essentially, when you take over an area through a mission you assign that area to an under-boss, basically by picking one in a multiple choice menu. This annoys the other bosses but it's never a hard decision and you don't care about the characters anyway. It's a massive missed opportunity not to have more involvement with your bosses, to get to know them properly and make more decisions in relation to their management, like how much they have to pay you etc. to give you that 'boss' feeling; and

    (4) glitches. as mentioned already, the game is riddled and often unplayable, but they are noticeable even when not game-breaking. Often the music will just stop and never come back on (requiring a restart) or your car will fall through the road and appear somewhere else on the map. The little things however, are even worse - when speaking in a cutscene people's mouths won't always move, a collectable will be unreachable, your 'assistants" will run you over by accident when you call them, you can climb some fences but not all fences, the list is absolutely endless.

Essentially - I bought this game on release without any reviews (the studio didn't give any sample copies to reviewers, so they didn't come our for days after release) and feel tricked. Put simply, this game completely destroys the Mafia brand and I will never purchase another game in the series despite my real enjoyment of the first two.

The story attempts to confront racism against Black Americans, yet doing so at the expense of perpetuating racism against Asians. The entire game is riddled with jokes and dismissive remarks against Korean and Vietnamese, as REAL as it can be. I get it it's in a Vietnam war setting but the entire game literally makes no effort to show the other side of the story or tell the alternative side from the Vietnamese war. Half way through the game it really gets me thinking: This game pretty much exemplifies modern day America where being racist against Asians are perfectly fine as long as you are cool with the rest of demographic. To see the hypocrisy play out in a game really shocks me.

    Total waste of a concept.

Mafia 3 would have been great had it just went off it's successor, Mafia 2, but it had to step in political correctness territory of the millennium. Besides the fact, the game starts off with a bang and looks promising, but goes downhill from there.

The realism goes downhill after you start killing guys after guys. I mean, the main character is a maniac serial killer. Throughout this game, that's all you do. You probably kill over 1000 ai enemies. Regardless who they are, that's insane. On a video game perspective, it's repetitive and considering this game is trying to portray a real life setting, it jumps the shark.

Graphics are somewhat decent, but there's moments where you dress your character and in the cut scene, he's back in his regular army attire.

Hilarious rag doll physics occur, but that's to be expected with a game like this.

I can't even go further to explain how mediocre this game is. It's not bad, but it's not good.

The only good thing about this game is the soundtrack in my opinion. It introduced me to a lot of "new" music from the 60's that I now love. Kudos to that.

There is a lot here to learn what not to do. Hangar13? Give it up. Developing games isn't for you. You all should go and find another career. You suck.

Sure, game has great sound, good driving system, not bad combat with simple stealth and works with racism controversy in game world. But there is a ton of stupidities witch kills whole fun.

For example, why I have to set up, if takedowns will be done by knife or not in the game options menu next to settings of subtitles? Why it is not just in weapon selection like in other normal games? Why is the city full of bars, shops or gas stations, but there is no option to interact ? Why "car garage" in this game means just a menu with nine prepared and locked models? I want to steal and save my own cars and than customize it. Why police have a "attention warning bar", but do not react at nothing less than car demolition? Why is not possible to kindnapp anyone? It is a Mafia game and it was also in trailer.

This game is clear copy of the universal Ubisoft game, it is more like AC, but in the bad way. Almost everything negative from the universal Ubisoft game template is included in this game, including "towers" for unlock visibility of map items . It has nothing common with the GTA. No side activities, no car tuning or stealing, no character customization. XO version has no special graphics, older GTA looks much better.

And I am not a GTA fanboy, I don't think, that GTA is the top of the gaming world. But I have expected something similar in a freedom, in a style, but with Mafia theme philosophy.

Also it looks like they used the same map as Mafia 2 and just added some marshy background. The area where you meet one character is exactly the same as Mafia 2. ut the things that you do in between are repetitive and get samey after few hours, the mechanics are all good, driving feels right, shooting and cover are implemented right (bar some issues i had switching over underfire) collectibles are pretty fun and interesting as well.

But it can become boring after the 10th time going into the same bar or factory and either killing a guy or blowing up some property. then driving to point A and repeating again. just started to lose me around 4-5 hours in.
Very much like a Ubisoft style of open world, just icons everywhere full of repetitive missions and nothing unique like in a Rockstar game. The world is more realized than a Ubi game so if you enjoy Ubi games you'll enjoy this even more. (you could maybe call it a 7 if you do.)

Probably would only recommend to rent or buy on sale, its fun for few hours but wears thin anymore than that.
hopefully DLC can fix some of these issues and add some more variety, but probably cant fix everything with DLC.

*JUST A DISCLAIMER i only played for 6 hours so if it magically gets better and it changes the whole structure of game play then ignore me, but it seemed like it was setting up the whole game from here on out

Environments looked lived in & feel lived in & are quite interesting to visit. Characters are SPOT ON PERFECT all though there ARE NO . CUSTOMIZATIONS SADLY for LINCOLN CLAY. Combat, weapons & Driving all feel REALISTIC & SMOOTH. The game has CRASHED SEVERAL TIMES but there's a PATCH ON THE WAY apparently & NEEDS TO BE A FEW MORE MAJOR PATCHES especially for the VISUALS. I'm around 10 hours in & the DEEPER you DIG into the game the better it gets & 1 important thing for me is, THE MISSIONS DO NOT FALL INTO THE TOO REPETITIOUS CATEGORY. IF THE PREVIOUS issues were FIXED with a PATCH than for me IT WOULD BE "

This game won't be for everyone though, however THE POSITIVES DO OUT WEIGH THE NEGATIVES IT'S JUST THAT THE NEGATIVES ARE QUITE BIG ISSUES WHICH NEED A BIG FIX! At first I was very excited to enter New Bordeaux as Lincoln Clay and start progressing through the game. It didn't take long for the game to become rather repetitive however. All you do is pretty much drive from A to B, kill a bunch of enemies/steal cash at a hideout to harm the boss sitting on the district. Rinse and repeat through the districts and that's about it. The final missions at a district will however spice things up a bit - and these missions are actually kinda entertaining.

You'll get rewarded with $$ as you complete missions but there's not a lot of ways to spend money in the game. You can buy weapons/call for mobster support etc. but you'll get a good amount of weapons without spending a penny tbh. I would have preferred the option to buy houses/buildings/garages. Also I would have preferred the option to store vehicles of my choice. It's not like Mafia 1 or 2 where you decide which vehicles to store - in Mafia III you'll just get a few cars and that's it.

The skybox looks like a bad version of a Nintendo 64 skybox and the weather will change all the time - it's almost comical to watch the changes in the weather - from sunny to rainy in 0.5 seconds. Also I felt a lack of enjoyment while driving around New Bordeaux. The jumps around the city are not suited for the cars - I've seen several cool jumps that my car (even at 135 mph) didn't manage to do properly. On top of this the game has several bugs. Sidemissions like "Are we cool" can not be completed as they're glitches. You'll see flying cars, cars with no collision and missions objectives that won't spawn several times during a play through - that of course is not acceptable at all.

The positives of this game are the soundtrack, the voice acting and the story. The gameplay will be fun at times and it had me entertained, but it did not live up to my expectations at all :( I would recommend buying the game when all the bugs/glitches are fixed and a customization update for Lincoln and cars has been released, but as of right now, the game only seems 90% done

Speaking of story I should also mention that I would not recommend this game to anyone who is too easily offended by racism if you have followed any coverage for Mafia 3 Hangar 13 has made it clear that they have put a lot of emphasis on Racism and as an African American myself let me tell you from what I have seen so far Hangar 13 has nailed it and really makes you feel like people react to you differently because Lincoln Clay is African American. Now for gameplay anyone who's looking at this game and comparing it to the likes of Rockstar Games last title Grand Theft Auto 5 you may find yourself more disappointed then anything, yes you can do things that can be done in Grand Theft Auto like freely roam around the city, steal cars, and escape cops but from what I've played so far Mafia 3 lacks the same amount of freedom offered by Grand Theft Auto and find Ubisofts Watch Dogs a better comparison to Mafia 3 as it' stealth, shooting, and cover mechanics are more similar too Watch Dogs. I will say that I do find myself irritated from time to time by the way Lincoln Clay moves throughout the world as he feels like there's a weightlessness to him when he moves and find myself over running past cover and driving can be a little iffy. The AI also leaves a lot to be desired in Mafia 3 as someone who's played many stealth games stalking and using stealth to eliminate the enemy is very unsatisfying the enemies vision is terrible and in multiple situations guards will have a conversation with each other and when they finish they move away from each other and out of there vision basically asking you to perform a silent takedown on them the AI is at least better though once bullets start flying and will kill you if you don't utilize cover. As for graphics there not much to write home about for the graphics in this game character models look good as well as facial motion capture but I have noticed some poor textures when I played especially in the environment at one point when I was driving around sunrise the lighting was so strong it made it difficult to see and later in my play through I was driving past some tress and they just looked blurry until textures popped in later. Now for anyone is worried about 2k holding back reviews because the game might be broken I can tell you right now you don't have to worry I haven't run into any bugs or glitches at the moment nor have I noticed any noticeable frame drops. Overall with the roughly 4 hours of Mafia 3 I have played I would say it's decent overall Mafia 3 still has a lot to prove that it could be a great game however I do have some fears that Mafia 3 may find itself having repetitive game missions where a majority of the main story is spent taking down Mob racket and really hope Mafia 3's main story will be mostly spent completing unique and dynamic main missions if it doesn't Mafia 3 could really be a squandered opportunity by Hangar 13's debut title

1970s, war, music, drugs, violence and corruption. This is what mafia 3 presents to the player from the very first cut scene. There are a lot of things that mafia 3 does right. Do not go into this game expecting GTA levels of1970s, war, music, drugs, violence and corruption. This is what mafia 3 presents to the player from the very first cut scene. There are a lot of things that mafia 3 does right. The story, voice acting, outstanding sound track, and the setting, a fictional city modeled after New Orleans, are all welcome additions to the mafia franchise. Do not go into this game expecting GTA levels of mission diversity or customization. The missions are mostly there to push forward the narrative but it mostly works because I found myself genuinely enjoying the story. With the use of flash forward interviews and clips, Mafia 3 gives the player background on many of the characters and explains the turbulent times that are filled with racism and corruption in New Bordeaux. However, the issues that I have with the game are some buggy mechanics and repetitive missions. A lot of the missions in this game feel like side quests and some of the actual side quests feel like they would work better as story missions. That aside, some of the game's main missions are fantastic. For example, early on you find the main character, Lincoln Clay, hunting down a mob boss in a theme park with alligators and roller coasters. The mission then concludes with a shootout in a creepy, swamp themed ride. I was actually blown away with this and was hopeful that the rest of the game would have many unique missions akin to some in GTA5. However after the linear start to the game, most of the missions are fetch quests that play out in similar fashion; find a mobster, infiltrate a building filled with thugs and either kill or recruit the target or destroy some illegal contraband. The purpose of these missions is to do enough damage to that region's Mob Boss that he will be forced out to try to kill you. This is when more variety comes into the missions because each boss mission is different. Once that is completed you assign that territory to one of your lieutenants which unlocks perks in your weapon wheel, such as cars, hit squads to support you, or a weapons dealer that delivers guns like a hot and ready pizza. This type of structure gets repeated in the different sections of the city but you can choose where you want to attack next. All the while some missions reveal a cut scene here or there to push along the story. Despite some of the short comings in mission structure and variety, I enjoy the gameplay. The third person, cover shooter gameplay mostly works well, allowing for stealth or all out gun fights. Sneaking up behind an enemy and stabbing him in the neck or blasting him in the head with a shotgun is very violent but also satisfying. Another problem lies with the AI, these enemies are dumb! Maybe it is because I have the game set to normal, but during some cover based executions only a blind man wouldn't see me kill a guard, yet other enemies close by seem to miss it all the time. Playing the game safe in stealth mode is definitely not as rewarding in terms of fun. I prefer to go in guns blazing. But all out war is risky because bullets do a lot of damage and if you have not deposited your wallet via courier in the weapons wheel, you loose half of the money in your wallet when you die. The police in the game can be called by witnesses if someone sees you committing a crime. This is where I feel the game really messes up. I think the battle between the police and Lincoln, a mobster, should be more prevalent in the missions. It is too easy to escape the police vicinity before they arrive and too difficult to evade them if they catch you. A better balance of difficulty and interaction would really benefit this game. With the open world that focuses mostly on building your empire, I wish the cops had a larger presence while also giving you a chance when you are out numbered.

In summary, this game has its ups and downs but I am glad games like this exist. It is not the most graphically impressive game or the most technical but it is fun. I enjoy the shoot outs, occasional quality story mission, as well as good narrative cut scenes. They have this game at RedBox and gamefly, I think it is worth a couple of nights of rental if not more. This game is being reviewed way too harshly by fans. It does not deserve a score below 6.

As a black man in the south 4 years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, New Bordeaux is a clash of the old and the new where racism is still overtly present and a major part of the narrative. The game captures the feel of the late 60's quite well (speaking as one who was around in the 60's) from the collectible Playboy and Hot Rod magazines, to the music, look and feel America in the late 60's.

The gameplay while repetitive was a lot of fun for me and never really got old, although late in the game I did start to do the bare minimum when taking over districts. The settings varied enough to keep me interested in my 40+ hour playthrough. I enjoyed using stealth and the detective mode mechanic and whistling to attract bad guys to silently take down, and when I was discovered it was very easy to go from stealth to a very frenetic combat.

On the negative side there are some major issues such as the 10 times the game crashed, clipping, hit and miss graphics, and repetitive missions with not much variance. If it were not for the frankly amazing narrative and the mostly satisfying game play Mafia III would have been a 4/10 game, but taking into account the aforementioned positives I scored Mafia III as a 7/10 and if the crash bug is ever patched I would easily give the Mafia III an 8/10.

While the game is flawed I found plenty of fun to be had in my playthrough and say if you find the game on sale for $40 (what I paid) or less, then I would recommend it.

I really enjoyed Mafia III the whole way through although, there was a lot of bugs, glitches and other optimisation problems.

The missions can definitely get very repetitive.

Driving in this game is very fun and easy compared to other games, I loved it.

I also really enjoyed the freedom of the open world which was fantastic.

Mafia 3 is a game that had a lot going for it, but somehow the pieces didn't quite come together. It's predecessor, Mafia 2, well an all around accepted, unique game. The main complaint with that games was that there was little to nothing to do besides the main story. Mafia 3 tries to correct those complaints, but goes too far and loses what made mafia 2 so great.

In Mafia 3, you play as Lincoln Clay, a mixed race Vietnam soldier returning to his home of New Bordeaux, a re-creation of New Orleans. the city is both large and detailed, every district is unique, if sometimes small. The game looks, and sounds great, speeding through the buoy listening to CCR on the radio really puts you in the setting. Racism is the star of the city though, in many instances, Lincoln is profiled because of his race, it is one of the only games i have ever played where racism has been shown with such power. While not being from that area nor having seen racism to such an extend practice in front of me, I cannot judge the accuracy of the game. You fall back into the group you were with when you left and the early missions seem engaging, thoughtful, and promising. Lincoln makes for a strong character, he is dead set on getting revenge, but he does show his human side here and there. Your under bosses, while being interesting and thought provoking, tend to come off as whinny when things don't go there way.
It's when the game turns into a tale of revenge when the game starts to take a dive. You are thrown into the video game equivalent of a pyramid scheme, you must do several side missions to reach an "Under boss", you must take out both under bosses in a district to get to the "Lieutenant", you must take out two lieutenants to reach their Superior. and when you take out all three of the superiors, you reach the final mission. The side missions, range from extremely repetitive to horribly bland. your objectives will usually include 'kill this person', 'destroy this', or 'interrogate him'. With every Lieutenant comes a major story mission, which don't seem to be as good as those in Mafia 2, so there isn't even any emotional payoff following each series of repetitive missions.
With each of your under bosses comes their special perks. Some I found more useful than others, like the able to deposit my money, request guns, have a car delivered to me, and calling in guys to help me clean an area. The gameplay consists of the usual hide behind cover and wait for people to stick there heads out. That being said, I stilled enjoyed firefights because of the realistic atmosphere and resource management that is there., however, I found that going in guns blazing required more health and ammo than I could hold, so i would typically play stealth because it was fast and easy. Driving feels good, and there is even a setting for more realistic driving, in case anyone who plays the game also loves racing games.
the best metaphor I can think of when describing this game is like when you order a streak at a restaurant that looks great, the mashed potatoes are amazing, the service is nice, the amount you got was good for the price, and the steak itself is burnt and flavorless. Mafia 3 has the fine details right, but when it came to the core of the game, it is just not there. Best soundtrack of 2016!

Random encounters were well thought out, conversations both on the street and with characters were relevant to my progress within the story. The world was so lovely to be in that I often found myself listening out a top song and simply watching the world go by before entering a mission marker. The gameplay and story were both very good, it all felt crisp and well written, I loved the call out system for guns, cars and bank. The soundtrack is, by far, the best I've ever heard and was worth the price alone, it will never be bettered in a game. The driving took a while to get used to but after a few hours and some upgrades it became a really enjoyable experience with some epic drifts and high speed close shaves, the traffic density is just right, and with that soundtrack I often found myself getting in the zone.

A few down sides, a few more side missions and some side activities would be nice. It require's a more detailed combat system, especially melee. Father James is painful to listen too and his character is unconvincing, can - he - talk - any - slower. Lighting is unstable. The game crashed 3 times in roughly 40 hours of play. Frame rate dropped a tiny bit at points towards the end of the game. The solid bushes everywhere felt a little bit quick and cheap, bushes aren't solid objects! Give us the option to create a save point, we should be free to save, load and back up as we please.

Despite some lighting issues I think the game has been very well tested which most don't agree with, it was a pleasure to play, a thoroughly enjoyable experience with some innovative touches.

And this is where its cracks start to show
The game structure is the same throughout… You’re tasked with doing monetary damage to a quote unquote business… each business is different but despite this you do same thing over and over and over for 20 hours… interrogate a target.. They tell you where the product is... you destroy the product, kill some targets, and get an underboss to come out from hiding...kill him… rinse and repeat...
Once an underboss is killed you can give that section of the city to one of your underbosses for an added perk, careful to keep all 3 happy so they don’t turn on you…
You have to do this Twice to get the main boss to come out… and this mission to kill the top boss in each city’s section are the greatest moments in the entire game.. so many epic and memorable levels to experience here… and the fact that they make up less than half of the game is completely unacceptable…
This doing damage to bring out the underbosses and killing them to bring out the boss is a great idea
I have no issue with this formula being used from start to finish.. what I do take issue is the fact that the structure of these missions dont change…
Every last mission should be as fleshed out as the kill whoever missions… which again are great points in the game…
But especially after experiencing witcher 3.. there’s no excuse for your main missions in an open world to not even have half the heart witchers side mission do let alone its campaign missions…
Sure make me do damage to bring them out, but make each mini boss its own hand crafted experience and story like the main bosses are.. Especially considering they’re required for story progression…
They feel like rinse and repeat liberation points throughout...
If that means the story goes from 20 hours to 12, I’m happy...
a 12 hour masterpiece is worth more to me than 20 hours of the same thing beat by beat…
The actual gameplay itself I felt is a bit unbalanced and inconsistent…
The guns in this game took far too long to reload for the amount of enemies you had to deal with.. sure you can call in for help during missions, but it hardly ever mattered…
You’d constantly get surrounded so cover didn’t matter, even if it did the cover system was super awkward leading you to pop right up trying to switch from cover to cover….enemies felt like bullet sponges, so you’d run out of a clip while dealing with 3 or 4 at a time and while you reloaded it would be over for you…
Even on the games easiest difficulty I felt it was too easy to die considering the circumstances..
And for some reason the main target in these missions takes damage like a tank…throwing the feel of the entire game away every time you encounter one…
You could also stealth around and take out enemies ninja style if you’d like…
Since you do have a voodoo doll to distract enemies and you can whistle to bring them towards you 1 at a time…
The outside world is a bit of a letdown too, as cops hardly feel like a threat at all.. More like ornaments…
And you have to constantly deal with citizens running to call the copy every time you hop in a car like watch dogs but worse...
And they call them unrealistically fast as do the goons calling for back up….
An extreme annoyance that I can kill someone before they say a word and it’s too late.. Reinforcements are here or cops are on their way…
And honestly other than cut scenes or the occasional gunman dropping the n word... I felt like just another white protagonist as no one on the street treated me any different... which was odd considering you do deal with the city’s presence of racism later on in the game…
But the racism seems to only be reserved for missions, failing to ultimately bring the world to life..
I feel like those few missions would have been more impactful if I actually got to feel what it was like to be in the shoes of an African American during the mid-60s.. As I’m sure it was far more and far worse than just being called the n word every now and then and only if you were a mobster destroying drugs and shooting places up……
That being said... mafia 3 still has its moments of greatness…
The cut scenes, the characters, the sound tract… and the missions the developers actually tried at, all ultimately make this game worth plaything through…
    I Give Mafia 3

The setting, the soundtrack, the story delivery, the gameplay, everything just adds up to make Mafia 3 not just one of the best games I've played this year, but one of best this generation.

Now I personally found the game looks amazing (on Xbox one) but I can see why some folks have issues as there are some irregularities here and there (sky & draw distance). Other than those two (minor) issues, the game is visually stunning, the lighting, the character animation, the weather effects are all first in class.

Not going to dwell on the story too much other than to say its absolutely amazing, well acted and well paced from start to finish. Honestly one of the best you'll see, it really is outstanding.

The gameplay, the one element that seems to be dragging scores for this game down all over the web. Well I have to be honest I can understand people's complaints here to some extent, I mean the gameplay does nothing new and it can be repetitive. That being said I personally had no issues with the gameplay, sure it has repetition, but it playsbso well that never bothered me. The combat and cover mechanics are well implemented and incredibly satisfying, taking out bad guys is just brutal and fun.

The vehicle handling deserves a special mention as, in my opinion, it's the best in the business, far superior to any other game of this ilk. Driving around New Bordeaux was a real pleasure and never a chore.

All things considered I found Mafia 3 to be an excellent game, one of the best this generation and well deserving of the 10 I've given it. It's clear from the outset that a lot of work has gone into this and it's just outstanding as a result.

It did leave me feeling optimistic about the future of the franchise.

The first things that stood out to me when starting Mafia 3 were the poor graphics, mediocre gameplay, the amazing setting, and gripping story. It got off to a rocky start but I really liked where it ended up. It ended up being a flawed game and I wouldn't blame anyone for passing it up. It did leave me feeling optimistic about the future of the franchise.
The gameplay is like your standard open-world, 3rd person shooter. It's cover system feels most similar to GTA 4 in the way that it works for the most part, but still feels like it's going to **** up all the time. The stealth has pretty much been stab them from behind or shoot them with a silencer. The one thing that I felt kept the stealth fun was the brutal but short takedowns. I never got tired of running up behind someone and violently shoving them to the ground and stomping their head in as they crawl away.
The graphics leave a lot to be desired. The draw distance is okay but noticeable. The textures are sometimes very poor in comparison to other textures. There is an overall grainy-ness to the graphics. One of the best assets the ascetic of Mafia 3 has, is also one of the biggest flaws at times: The lighting. Sometimes the lighting in the game will give the atmosphere a heavy feel that works well with New Orleans and the Bayou. Then, in mere moments, it can instantly switch and make the world seem glitched. The light will seem artificial and as if it were coming from multiple suns. Also, the water can look VERY poor depending on the lighting.
Now for the pros. The atmosphere and setting of New Bordeaux is captivating. One of my favorite locations is Vito's place on the docks. It gives a great view of the city's skyline and a detailed look at the docks and river. The environments are detailed, and the clothing and buildings really nail the feel of a period piece.
The other major pro is the story. It starts out as a great tale of revenge. I like that Hangar 13 put in just enough time for you to get invested in the characters before they are betrayed. Then, what seems to be simple revenge, ends up getting tangled in issues of government bribes and racism. Taking out Sal's empire is satisfying and gives you genuine motivation, although at times it seems the pacing is a little drawn out depending on how many side objectives you are doing.
In conclusion, Mafia 3 will be lucky to be remembered for it's story and setting if anything. (oh and the road sign directions. Love those.) For a game that pushes boundaries with it's story telling, it ends up playing it far too safe in the gameplay department. It seems like gameplay from last gen. I personally have greatly enjoyed my time with Mafia 3 despite its repetition and technical flaws. I would recommend buying on sale or if you have nothing else lined up to play.

Aloha B-rod here trying to get back into reviewing stuff so I’m writing and releasing a bunch of reviews of the games I played the last two months and I must start with Mafia 3. This was probably my most anticipated game this year, and oh boy sticking to 2016 feels it was a disappointment.
The game's story is great and simple. It is a revenge story through and through. It doesn’t get crazy and there aren’t any whoa it turns out you were crazy the whole time twist. I actually dug the **** out of this story it was fun and engaging, and like I said you were the **** Punisher so the scenes where Lincoln (main character’s name) is slow walking to a mobster while he is begging, “man I had nothin to do with what happened”; that could give a nun a murder boner. Sadly, what kills the story is the fact the game is padded out with you taking over district by district just to progress.
This isn’t new to video games Assassin’s Creed is a game that has this mechanic, but in Assassin’s Creed THE WHOLE THING IS OPTIONAL. This is the second game this year that had things that are optional in most games, but mandatory in theirs. Look if I want to go after the booze ring and blow up each wearhouse doing the same goddamn thing over and over I should be able to, and even be rewarded for doing so. Making this mandatory to finish the game is just padding the **** out. I don’t need my game to be 15-20 hours 8 hours is sometimes more fun if it makes the story flow nicer, and having variety. I can’t help but compare this to GTA V which did this concept better, longer, and made the side missions SIDE MISSIONS. I do want to talk about what I like in the gameplay. I love how the combat works it doesn’t **** around. It is very cover orientated, but the AI is smart enough to maneuver you out from being in one place the whole time as well. The kills are brutal and bloody you feel like you’re there to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and you bought Juicey Fruit so the flavor didn’t last and you’re pissed. I also loved the soundtrack to this game you give me that 60s-70s music and I’m there. They have Rolling Stones, CCR, Jefferson Airplane, and Elvis Presley etc… The game also is beautiful as all hell especially in the pre-rendered cut scenes damn did they put some time into these graphics.

Overall the game is not a bad game in fact if you don’t try and power through it like I did then all the tedious inbetween mandatory missions won’t be so bad. When I was murdering mobsters I had a smile from ear to ear it is murderlicious. The game’s story is fun, and makes the main character have the wallet that says BAMF on it. I give this a 4/5 it would’ve been perfect if it just was a tighter game. Alrighty one review down 4 more to go

It was pretty ordinary. Standard open world experience basically what you'd expect from a game like this, repetitive glitchy lack of fast travel is aggravating when missions can be so far away from each other. I would recommend finding something better for your time.

The game involves taking over each district of the city (i know, how original), with the end goal being to cause as much destruction to draw each new major antagonist out, so they can each have their comeuppance. This is all held together by a mediocre plot centred on Lincold Clay; who is meant to be a goody (?)

Clearly, a lot of effort was put into a beautiful, 1968 New Orleans replica, where the radio goes static when driving through tunnels and where actual man-eating crocodiles can be used as dead body dispensaries. However, this heart cannot be found in the core game itself. The soundtrack/radio, although full of bangers, is sort of all over the place. The level design affords little variety in mission approaches. Bugs are a persistent problem; with cars often materialising just feet from your character. Worst of all, the game fails to immerse you in the mafia fantasy in the way Mafia 2 managed so well.

The weapons and the way they shoot and play out in the game was great. The driving was pretty decent. The Season Pass is great and better than any other story in the game, which is very unfortunate.

The graphics were mediocre, sometimes embarrassing. The repetition in this game is tedious and most of the time frustrating. If you have played "Assassin's Creed Syndicate" then this game is much worse in that aspect. What's the point of driving a heavy truck or a boat for 3 km multiple times? I understand doing it once or twice in the whole game, but it asks you to do so more than I could personally bear (I left those missions unfinished). Also, I wished there was some instant travel inserted in this game. The long drive between missions isn't very amusing.

Overall, this game is not worth $60 or $40, but if you can get it for less, then it's a great filler in between games.

With all the DLCs and the post launch content the game finally becomes way more fun, however its still buggy and it crashes alot.

For me the game is worth it just for the amazing soundtrack. The story is interesting, and the general idea of the game is good, but both missions and the action are repetitive, sometimes too much. I finished it and don't regret it, but if you are not a fan of the 60-70s there are similar and better things out there.

Xbox Series X - Definitive Edition (Trilogy).
Average looking, generic and boring action game. It is not mafia, do not let the title deceive you.

    Highly not recommended.

Uno de los peores juegos que he jugado de lejos. Historia malísima, mecánicas simples y repetitivas a mas no poder y muchos bugs.

For me, the game is about half and half. Personally, I like the range of weapons, cars and the size of the map. But when it comes to graphics and storytelling, this is a chapter in itself. Repetitive missions, total simplicity of fights and stupid artificial intelligence. Optimization is also half and half. But I also have another problem with Mafia 3. The game is often lagged, chopped ....

Except for the good atmosphere and nice facial animations, the game is no longer good. The story is completely stupid. The performance is terribly poor. Everything is blured, pale and gray. Lots of bugs. Poor optimization. Ride is extremely arcade and monotonous. Horror, especially after a great first part.
SRP: Izuzev dobre atmosfere i lepih facijalnih animacija, igra nema ništa

Izuzev dobre atmosfere i lepih facijalnih animacija, igra nema ništa više dobro. Priča je kompletno glupa. Performanse su užasno loše. Sve je blurovano, bledo i sivo. Mnogo bagova. Loša optimizacija. Vožnja je izuzetno arkadna i monotona. Užas, pogotovo nakon sjajnog prvog dela.

I understand why many people hated the game because of its missions, but the high quality gunplay, driving, and soundtrack makes up for it. Loved the every aspect with gun animations and brutal takedowns. Whatever trick they used for camera movement while driving also deserves applause, so much so that it made every other racing game boring in comparison for me.

The game and especially the protagonist really intrigued me initially but unfortunately it just wasnt a very good experience overall.

Lighting is terrible, missions are beyond repetitive and the plot doesnt really go anywhere.

Mafia 3 is a game that gets in its own way. The city is beautiful, the themes are mature and the story, writing and performances are all easily some of the best we’ve had in games this year, but then the incredibly repetitive missions, wonky AI and technical glitches all make getting to the meat a royal pain in the arse. I’ve never loved and hated a game simultaneously quite as much as Mafia 3.

An ambitious study of crime and race slightly spoiled by niggling bugs and menial missions. [Christmas 2016, p.74]

Mafia III put a high priority on its backstory, immersion, and presentation. That work shows in the quality of the narrative and the tragic characters, but unfortunately left little to flesh out the city of New Bordeaux. It's worth playing for the campaign, but perhaps there isn't a need to rush.
